I don't know why but I find robots SO cute and endearing. We create them without mother nature, so they are truly our children in every way. The ultimate parenthood rush.
The part of the video on patients who were angry or upset being soothed by Paro...that made me cry. I hope I get to hug one someday if I ever see one in person.
We got a PARO here in Quebec, Canada. First reaction of the media was to bash it under the pretext that we treat the elderly like babies.. Just looking at it in this video, I already think it really works. Its cute!
+The Vintage King TM not like the ones outside it. Movies exaggerate people with mental disorders. They are not all bad people and it doesnt make the person.
@Jessica James I think there has been placebo tests in Sweden where fury animals toys were used and compared to Paro. Guess what: no difference on the effect on the demented users. I guess this may be one reason why this kind of expensive robots has been very little adopted in the care for elders in Sweden: REAL, UNBIASED SCIENCE. Anyways, the usage of real animals has increased a lot as far as I can tell. Aside from a potential risks for allergies, the things you make sounds as "negatives" are actually positives as they also includes a level of interaction. News flash: most care for elders are not in hospitals (but I guess it may vary in different countries or cultures). Adult indoors cats do their natural needs very very tidy all bv themselves by the way and doesn't require any "walking" at all. I know he wrote "mental hospital here", but it seems some people really mix up caring for elders with dementia with "mental hospitals".
Just read this on an article. So hopefully it will finally be able to help more people like you asked about 6 years ago. Who knew it would take a pandemic for this to happen?! In part because of its $6,120 price tag, PARO (the name echoes the Japanese term for “personal robot”) has primarily been adopted by institutions: hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities. Because the Food and Drug Administration classifies the robot as a biofeedback device, Medicare will cover its purchase and use by therapists.
An interesting thought on how this can be very effective. The people it's meant for are on the generation not used to robots, as toys or other. And also not this realistic'ish plushies. And in a stroke of dementia when thoughts are blurry, i'd imagine it's not hard to forget thet this cute little baby animal is a robot, with no actual feelings. It's a baby animal, and baby animals need affection. It's a deep rooted primal reflex. Mostly toward human babies, but also animals. Care for the babies. And there's one right in front of you. Drop what you are doing and give it a cuddle.
I'm not versed in the science of psychology, but based on what I know, this seems sound. It's a base instinct in most people to care for a child/baby animal, especially when it's letting out cute noises and moving about to get you to pet it.
"Paro is designed to have a positive psychological effect on people who interact with it..." I'm having a positive psychological response just looking at it! ^_^
Paro is a brilliant design. Even though the appearance may be that of a child's toy, the fact that it Paro can be used to help adults in this way is wonderful. As long a the psychologists can genuinely assimilate this into the therapy.
I think that it is because it is used for medical purposes. The FDA is acknowledging that this is a proven and effective piece of medical equipment. It's almost like a prescription.
they need to make the movements a little more smooth to make it more realistic and it needs several different noises like 100 seal noise variations . and it should follow the movement patterns of real seals in relation to touch. To make this really work well it requires interaction and testing on baby seals.
Japan is the most successful country at showing the spectrum of the human imagination; one minute, soul-crushingly horrifying, and the next, incomparably wonderful.
Holy shit - that's like the best, most realistic robot animal I've ever seen - at least the best robot pet by far. How much do one of those things retail for?
Anyone else come here from "The Simpsons?" (Season 23's "Replaceable You.") Of course, the real-life Paro here is much cuter than the ones in that "The Simpsons" episode!
@jerrythedutchmapler In a way, this IS helping to save real seals. By exposing people to these robots, they are also exposing them to the animals and helping foster an attachment between people and the actual animal via a proxy. So, tell a person who grew up with a Paro as their main toy that their flesh and blood Paro is clubbed for fur, that person will probably be more proactive in animal protection.
Seriously these robots need to be cheaper as it has personal use benefits and can be enjoyed as a cute robot to care for and cuddle with. Not everyone can afford a $6000 robot seal.
This is cute and creepy at the same time . I mean imagine waking up at 3 am to this fucker making sounds i would shit my pants and hug it at the same time
@golglu I am not an idiot or a retrograde. I am a delightful, intelligent person who believes you are not taking the threat of baby seals and robotic baby seals seriously enough. Good Day sir. And I hope that the robotic baby seal you sleep with never turns on you, or cheats on you.
We'll have robot everything someday. Perhaps we'll even be able to scuba dive in the reef and enjoy a virtual ski holiday. I'm glad somebody is working on this technology now since the real planet is up a shit creek FAST!!!
@tantawi1992 I agree with many of your points, but I think that this research shows potential. Also, as stated, no real harm is being done by the testing of these, and if they are effective, there is no problem with them.
I love how the chager cable is shaped as a baby pacifier.
They should create a consumer model. Being a seal pup lover I would buy one for sure.
The Cutest battery charge, I have ever seen

My heart melted as soon as the video started lol
Sorry to hear that. I think you should see a doctor.
Calum McLaughlin same
InfoSopher too late 😵

Why dont they have these in mental hospitals? I mean honestly, this is so underrated!!!
+The Vintage King TM not like the ones outside it. Movies exaggerate people with mental disorders. They are not all bad people and it doesnt make the person.
Gaby Carrillo Lol sorry I was being dumb when I made that comment.

Good god, the cuteness in these seal robots is so cute, I think my heart just exploded!

SOOOOOOOOO CUUUTTTTTTTEEEEE...
Heart hurts. . .SO MUCH! Too cute! Instant psychological effects!
"Paro is designed to have a positive psychological effect on people who interact with it..."
I'm having a positive psychological response just looking at it! ^_^
Goals in Life 1. Watch Twins
2. Acquire Paro
isnt that why were all here lol
Paro is a brilliant design. Even though the appearance may be that of a child's toy, the fact that it Paro can be used to help adults in this way is wonderful. As long a the psychologists can genuinely assimilate this into the therapy.
Why does a robot seal need to be approved by the FDA though?
I think that it is because it is used for medical purposes. The FDA is acknowledging that this is a proven and effective piece of medical equipment. It's almost like a prescription.
Wolfborg because paro is for medical stuff
Most likely, it can be approved to be used in hospitals 🏥 and can be prescribed and then covered by insurance.
So unless you're like somewhat rich, it's impossible to get a Paro for personal use.
Only two negatives:
1) the price
2) if that little sweetheart ever acts sad
1:32 here's an example of the Paro acting sad
dear santa......
good. a cute fluffy critter that doesnt make me sneeze!
i wish i could afford this for my dad =(
Clarissa Chen awwww 🥰 your a very good person
That’s really sweet!
have you considered setting up a fund? I'm sure many people are willing to help (:

To make this really work well it requires interaction and testing on baby seals.
But soooo much more intricate, well-designed and realistic!
lol that last shot was awesome - but they really ought to broaden the range of sounds it has available.
It's really cute, and definitely good for elderly in homes that may not have family and are isolated.
I need one because I am so stressed out
Japan is the most successful country at showing the spectrum of the human imagination; one minute, soul-crushingly horrifying, and the next, incomparably wonderful.
It wants your love, it wants your affection, but most importantly, IT WANTS YOUR SOUL.
Man: PARO has a value system that includes enjoying being stroked and disliking being hit.
Me: ...Wtf WHY would you hit it?! D:
This is so sweet i could cry sugar
I want one!!! It's so cuteness!!!
It could never replace my pets though.
Holy shit - that's like the best, most realistic robot animal I've ever seen - at least the best robot pet by far. How much do one of those things retail for?
We had to do projects on robots in S.T.E.M. Class, I looked through the internet and found this cutie. Needless to say, I found my robot.
adorableness overload. Too much adorableness.
it's sad that these things cost a lot of money
Anyone who doesn't respond positively to it has no soul!
Its so cute. Who says robots cant be cute? Here's real proof they can. I want one too.
Anyone else come here from "The Simpsons?" (Season 23's "Replaceable You.") Of course, the real-life Paro here is much cuter than the ones in that "The Simpsons" episode!

The PARO is so cute
Omg think about if it someday was overheating, and you would find this overly cute baby seal robot burning :'D the scene would be terrifying
It's only a matter of time.
If I own one or a few, I'll do anything to prevent my Paro(s) from overheating and burning.
its SOOO cute!!! I love it! But the noise is so annoying
its so cute i want one
This robor will be expensive. But all of the people who have a lot of stress, that thing gotta be important.
Awwwww!!!!! So cute!!!!!! I want one! ^^

Seriously these robots need to be cheaper as it has personal use benefits and can be enjoyed as a cute robot to care for and cuddle with. Not everyone can afford a $6000 robot seal.

"PARO is designed to have a positive psychological impact on those who interact with it"
There are positive psychological impacts on those who *watch*

We are going to need robot seals after all the real ones have been clubbed to death... It's hard to imagine anybody can kill such a thing.
KOL reference?
Not intentionally. I don't know what KOL is.
We'll have robot everything someday. Perhaps we'll even be able to scuba dive in the reef and enjoy a virtual ski holiday. I'm glad somebody is working on this technology now since the real planet is up a shit creek FAST!!!

I would probably be scared by this at night with such noises.
