I remember the first time hearing this song...I was in my first car, just picked up the album, and was driving on a beautiful Spring day. The first initial beat took me back to being 16 with no responsibilities and just rushed me with emotions especially hearing Chester.
So many songs warned us of his mental condition...far too late to stop it. RIP.
When I first heard this, I didn't even recognize it as a linkin park song. Now it's one of my favorites.
I've always believed that this particular song was him reaching out for help. Rip Chester
This song 🎶 is clearly about suicide.
He totally missed the points he was Making. Which is Common for someone whom has never been in that dark Space in your own head. Here’s what Chester was really saying from someone that’s struggled and continues to struggle with suicide.
Pay close attention to the combination of lyrics.
I close both locks beneath the window and turn away. Yes he’s closing himself off from everything and everyone. Not just the outside world. For example Locking himself in his bathroom. So that he can carry out an attempt *. This is very sad as it shows he clearly Was speaking about suicide..
Next he mentions sometimes new beginnings aren’t so simple. Sometimes goodbyes the only way.
This clearly Again is mentioning his desire to Check out. I know this all so well often before my own attempts I have told those close to me goodbye 👋 . Very similar to ppl whom leave a note 📝.. saying that one last goodbye Is Common in suicide.
When he says the cards and Flowers on the window .. And your friends all plead for you to stay. He’s clearly in the hospital after his attempt not working.. And everyone all the sudden then can be there to show their love and compassion. But notice he clearly does as I and many others that are in those dark mental l places.. he pushes them away. This can be seen later by these lyrics.
And the sky will turn grey and the sun will set for you.
This is ominous.. it’s clearly discussing that he’s going to go weather his Friends want him to or not. And this is why the lyrics say and the sky will turn grey.. this entirely ties into the suicide attempt. Meaning In short the curtain is going to close for me. But the sun will Go on and set for you. You will Go another day. Without me. It’s a very surreal way of tying the thought processes together without saying this all directly. Many suicidal people may hint at their own destruction.. sometimes it can be then reaching out for help., others hoping someone will just get it and their pain. And make it stop.
To people whom have never been suicidal these lyrics I guess aren’t perhaps as obvious. But to me if I turn on this song I feel it instantly as Ive even attempted Multiple times while hearing it Play. However I am still here for now. I hope this brings better insight to the Real reason for this song ..
Notice also at the end the Music change. It almost Sounds Like funeral home Music. I Hope all of this helps you get a clearer picture of Chester. What he was going through was horrible and this was his farewell warning that sooner rather than later I’ll be no more. He was saying I can’t keep fighting this anymore. Sometimes beginnings aren’t so simple sometimes goodbyes the only way.
Also notice he mentions in his lyrics there being an empty chair at the table. And his friends saying that’s not fair. Again this chair is empty because “he checked out.” I again this helps you better understand.
One last thing, the sun setting also symbolizes the close of a day or time. This is yet more symbolism tying to the act of suicide. And the sun will set for you. Meaning in short my time will End soon. Commonly we think of the sunsetting to be what? The end. Everything turns grey and Everything ends. As with death. Im trying to give you all the insight so you can see it in combination for yourself.

I just looked up the song again because it’s fantastic and I think the message is meant to be the opposite of your sun will rise tomorrow but holds the same meaning :) like you’ve made it another day because you’re capable and strong enough to move forward
