Soaking clutches. From my 30 years of doing this. I have also done them both ways. I no longer soak them. I have had zero problems. Building transmissions and putting in dry clutches.
When you read the maintenance manual for these ZF boxes, they list a whole load of special tools/fixtures/clamps/pullers etc that you use in assembly & disassembly. Are these necessary? Or can you make do without them
Just completed a rebuild on a 2010 BMW 335 6hp21 transmission. Completed a normal overhaul replaced the center support section because the bevel plate broke and damage the center support. Inspected and cleaned and replaced seals new spacer plate ceiling rings, etc. completed a pressure check of all clutch packs installed new bridge seals and tubes. Now after installation I only have reverse gear and six gear. No forward engagement. Could I have missed something in the vow body or have an issue with a sticking check ball. looking for some help here if possibly you’ve dealt with something of the same nature. Only Dtc present is 4f81 clutch a monitor thanks again
Did you match the seperator plate and make sure all the holes are the same? Also double check your check ball locations and make sure they are correct.
Given your video is about a ZF6HP21 Rebuild, my question is way off model topic but do you happen to know if it is possible to buy a brand new GM4t65e transmission for an old Volvo xc90 from 2006 OR is a reman the only route available? I am just weighing up the options before i decide to keep the Xc going or turn it into driveway furniture and spare parts 🤔(i'm based in the U.K.at the mo.)
Okay, so maybe this is the rebuild for the unit you did teardown on about a month ago. So at the 5:20 mark, the inner piston you install in the direct drum is the one where the o-ring was so worn out that the piston flopped around and made a funny noise when you picked it up.
Just got finished with a rebuild on a 6HP 21 I don’t recall how hard it was to turn the input shaft previously before I tore it down but it seems I have to put quite a bit of resistance into it to get it to return. Is this normal, I’ve dealt with GM transmissions in the past and I don’t recall it being that hard to turn. Thanks
It should turn fairly easily. definitely by hand. I would pull the pump back out and make sure the shim on the pump is sitting in the sun gear properly. If that is not it and you put bushings in it. Check the bushing in the drum above the support. It may not be down quite far enough holding the bearing up.
Ok I found the issue was a tight new bushing in the lower output carrier. All good there. Need some further insight we installed the transmission air checked the case and clutch drums inspected and cleaned the valve body replaced the normal wear parts of course. All good there. We installed the transmission filled to spec now we have no forward movement only reverse gear works. One current Dtc 4f81 clutch ratio monitor A. Looking for some help or information on this could have missed something here. Possibly may have experienced thanks again
Can I send you this very same transmission to rebuild? I’ve been looking around but it’s hard to find a reman transmission from any place around me that I can trust to put my name behind when I put it back in for my customer.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission No problem. I had hopes but I'll end up rebuilding it myself with my friends brother. We've never done a BMW but we've done quite a few chevy transmissions. Any advice is welcome. I appreciate you posting these videos. I'll be using them and the OEM service procedures thoroughly.
Bevel washer within the C-D clutch drum (center support) was broken to pieces and the clutches were down to metal, almost wafer thin. What do you think would cause the bevel washer to break? Spirited driving?
Seen the clutches worn down like that before. Never seen the washer broken. Get a Transtec kit with Raybestos clutches. Bushing kit is a must, prefer Durabond. I put the Sonnax zip kit and both Transgo kits in the valve body. Separator plate will most likely get destroyed taking it apart.

Thanks for watching.
Question, 4L80, 2003 truck, working fine, use DexVI or 295 spec DexIII?
DexIII
Thanks

No you don't need most of them.
Great video. What tool do you use to remove and reinstall the half moons in the clutch assemblies (8:20 in the video)?
I use an Adaptacase press. Thanks for watching. adaptacase.com/press.html
@@CurmudgeonTransmissionthanks!
Please double check your torque spec settings. I believe at the end of the video you said 25 foot pounds for the plastic pan.
@@waynehazard-ql5sv You are correct. I don't know where I got that. It is supposed to be 8.8 ft. lbs. Thanks for pointing it out.

Ok thank you for the feedback I do appreciate it. I will go back and double check the plate and check ball location

Reman is your only option other than used. Even the dealer will be a reman.
Thank you for the reply very much appreciated@@CurmudgeonTransmission

They don't do carry out transmissions, sorry.
