Yes I’m an artist but I work for the client. It’s commission work. Get over yourself and do what people want. Don’t get me wrong, I love doing original work. But I never lost sight that this is my job. There are things that some artist aren’t capable of stylistically. I get telling someone “I don’t do portraits” or if realism isn’t your strong suit. But if someone wants the same bird that a celeb has, just do it. Take the money. Get paid. There’s almost too many artists out there now thanks to the ease of getting the equipment. I've had some of the BEST conversations with my tattoo artists. You have moments of being comfortable and uncomfortable with them at the same time that forces you to be vulnerable and trusting. It really is therapy to me. You really don't stop "paying" for them if they're super visible though. I'm glad to be a part of the wave that helped make visible tattoos more acceptable in society because that is the reality I want to live in 👍 Wow the throat is prime tattoo real estate; get ready to be a walking billboard for your artist! Stoked to see what you're getting Finn! I've definitely spent a lot of money on tattoo magazines and seen way more than I ever wanted to on the show "Tattoo Far" 😅 that is a whole other level of cringe!

I’m sure someone has mentioned it already, but there was a season of Ink Master where one of the contestants had no tattoos. His reason was something along the lines of “I’ve been so focused on my career as a tattoo artist that I never got any” and he was legitimately a very good artist. The judges were super petty about it when they found out. As a show of support, the other cast members took sharpies and drew tattoos on him. When the judges saw that, they got super butthurt and eliminated him, not because of his skill but because they were gatekeeping assholes.
That solidified for me that all those judges were part of a culture saturated by oversensitive little bitches (I don’t normally like to be this rude, but it really pisses me off) masquerading as badasses by growing out their hair and getting tattoos/piercings.
That killed it for me. It’s fine if you have tattoos for self expression, but there are wayyyyyy too many people that have convinced themselves that they are someone that shouldn’t be fucked with due to a factor that has absolutely nothing to do with being able to throw or take a punch.
If given the opportunity to remove my tattoos for free, there’s only one small semi-visible one that I would keep.
Sorry for the rant. Blame Ink Master.

Here’s the thing about the tattoo artist versus the customer. As an artist (not in ink but numerous other media), I have come to embrace the basic designer truth that you should never show a client a design you hate, because you will end up married to it professionally. It’s going to be the one they love. But of equal importance is the necessity to eat regularly and have shelter. There are times when your artistic integrity may have to take a brief backseat to survival. And as a tattoo artist, a relatively unforgiving medium at least until the last 10 years or so, you have to consider the following: if someone comes to you and they want what they want, your job is to execute what the client wants; if they are not totally in love with something they’re likely going to have to live with without considerable expense, it may engender ill feelings every time they see it. Hell, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that in our overly-litigious society that they may sue you for removal or alteration costs. Sounds silly, but I’ve seen sillier things occur. So give the ironic SPAM tattoo to the annoying entitled hipster. They’re the ones who will look ridiculous, and you can quickly wash your hands and move on to something meaningful. Plus Arcade Fire Boy may send other business to you for being accommodating. Selling out? Maybe. Hungry and cold? Less likely.

A lot of tattoo artists really are super annoying! I was getting tattooed once and during a break in the session all the artists in the shop were talking about music festivals they had been to or wanted to go to. So much clout chasing in that conversation, it was really tiring. Another time my longtime main artist was doing a guest spot and one of the young artists in the shop was playing mumble rap for hours. Me and my artist had a whole conversation about how nihilistic and low vibe that kind of music is. I went with my brother once to keep him company for his first tattoo and the artist showed up late and bragged about being hungover and not eating anything before the session. Why would you flex about that??
I mostly just go to one artist anymore unless I’m wanting a tattoo in a specific style he doesn’t do. Mostly because he’s mature and professional. And I keep my tattoos covered as best I can because I hate talking about them with strangers.

I definitely don't gatekeep with tattoos, I got my sleeve 10 years ago and that's the last work I got, but I remember it used to kinda be like if you wanted to tattoo your hands you kinda had to get your arms done first and kind of "earn" it. That sounds super gatekeepy haha but it really used to kinda be like that. But now kids tattoo whatever they want wherever they want, the scene has really changed. And that's fine but I just find it really interesting how the culture has changed

Well there’s a specific word for people who want to “look tattooed”, and it’s called POSER.

I got my tattoos done around about the same time - the artist was saying something similar about neck tattoos, people wanted that as a first tat. He went on to say he had instances of people wanting sleeves done - not caring at all what was on the sleeve, only that he did a sleeve for them. Pissed him off no end

When your parents have them thats when its not cool. Like facebook. When a grandmother is going out to get "just breathe" on her forearm.

I think there was a meme somewhere: Back in the days, Tattoos meant: 'You better shut the F up, or you'll get sh*t' - nowadays, tattoos mean: 'Let me read my poem I wrote about my vegan bike to you' or something. Tattoos have become soooo raaaandom and generic nowadays. Up to the point of cringe (Rappers face tattoos...).

I've been a tattoo artist for a little more than 10 years now (I really got into it full-time I was 24 and I'm 36 now) and I stopped doing it full-time in 2017 to go back to university. And I see a lot of my former co-workers leaving this industry as well. I'm really far from this whole world these days but I'm not surprised to see a decrease of interest.

I finally have decent money at 29 and now tattoos aren't cool anymore 😂 I have a few but I assumed I would have so much more at this point in my life but money thought differently lol

I got my first tattoo at 25 after my ex broke up with me lol I stopped wanting to be as modified after turning 18 the adult world hit me and I couldn’t afford it.
I’ve been getting my sleeve done by South Korean tattoo artists so there’s not much talking because of the language barrier. I just sit there and basically meditate for hours it’s a great self experience so I kinda do it for that, from setting up the appt to the anticipation and the pain itself ❤

I love your videos, a couple of them have helped mold my current taste in music but in 2023 there is nothing less than punk rock than tattoos.

My favorite tattoo interaction is when some random dude approached me at the gas station and started going off about how "tattoos used to mean you were a badass" and "you millennials ruined them" and im like sorry for enjoying life bro lol

When I was a kid, the only people with tattoos were former inmates and maybe sailors. Tattoos were the stigma of low life. Then people started getting decorative tats, limited to arms and backs. It was rare and they got weird looks. Then came the tramp stamps. It seemed like every young woman that just had her first child had to have one. Then finally it became random pictures in random places, total nonsense. I never liked seeing body modifications but I finally just gave up. Life's too short.

I'll never forget going to a gas station and seeing the girl working there with what was essentially a stick n poke forearm sleeve.

I have 14 tattoos. I was always told they were cool.... until my last one when many people just shrugged their shoulders at me and said "not cool".
I don't know why they do that now about tattoos. What changed?
My last tattoo is pretty cool; it's Fred durst and finn both sitting in a roman spa/bath circa 100BC, birth spreadeagle with robes lossely placed as they discuss philosophy. You can tell they are talking philosophy as there is a tattoo speech bubble coming from Finn saying "that's deep Fred..that's not just a medium ".
