One of my favorite memories of HR was actually the third Tyrant fight - I had hacked a turret and was just carrying it around the base with me, didn't even know there was a boss fight coming up, and had gotten the chip "upgrade". Stood in the corner baffled there was a boss fight going on and freaking out on how I was gonna fight him...once he walked past the elevator the turret was not only still loaded into the level but kicked on and made swiss cheese outta the boss. I just watched amazed that I'd accidently countered his ace in the hole with my own.
That's emergent gameplay for you - more developers need to build systems into their games that allow for such things to happen. I had several similar moments with the original DX more than twenty years ago.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution takes the cake as #1 on my list of the coolest kills I've ever pulled off in a video game. Ever. Near-ish the end of the game I was fighting through some base, and carrying a vending machine to toss at some poor sod, and as an impromptu cover. I was met with a group of guys, and as I was wading through their fire, one of them tossed a grenade at me. Immediately, I tossed the vending machine with the intention to run away from the grenade, without being slowed down by a heavy object... it turned out I didn't have to, because my vending machine collided mid-air with the grenade and deflected it back into the group, killing all of the enemies at once. 10/10 would perform a vending machine grenade deflect group kill again.
this game is so fkin fun. i remember i carried a fridge/vending machine like a mobile cover lmao while going through a long corridor/hallway popping headsh0ts in between (used the entrance on the other side as chokehold point to small bursts of incoming reinforcement teams, somehow unsilenced loud 10mm is better for faster stealth/ghost runs in this game lol) still maintained stealth and the headsh0t only+ unsilenced 10mm pist0l only+ ghost+ gen0c^de playthrough was the most fun i had with this game

One issue worth mentioning regarding the Directors Cut is that it uses an older version of Human Revolution meaning some of the bugs that were fixed Human Revolution, are present in the Directors Cut (such as weapons having a yellow outline when looking at an object).

It's not impossible to have the Casey on that first social boss battle but you do need to make getting it your focus and go nonlethal all the way up until that point. It's totally worth it.
Gotta max out all the XP you can get upto that point; all non-lethal stealth takedowns, finding every alternate route, hacking everything. HR was the game that first made me aware of the term "Immersive Sim" I knew of Thief and SystemShock 2 before then through a friend and had played Bioshock. Obviously HR hooked me (even with the horrible boss fights pre director's cut), ended up playing through it multiple times with different styles and 100% it. Everytime i played this game i found another way or route to complete the mission or missions inside the hub areas. One of the best games ever and i am a fan of the goldfilter. So much small detail in this game and the sequel too, shame that Square ruined the franchise.
I think this will be a "one for them, one for me" type of scenario, where Eidos MTL couldnt say no to a profitable game like Guardians of the Galaxy after poor sales from Mankind Divided, but given their newfound financial security and success will allow them to finish the Jensen trilogy.
Hey, MD sales did Very well, it's just not up to square Enix StAnDaRd, which we don't know how much they expected. Especially, if only SE didn't fuck up with half ass content/story and in game purchase.
Great video, and I totally share your pain about not having the third Adam Jensen game. Human Revolution was my first 'real' immersive sim, too. I only discovered it last year (better late than never, I guess). Now I'm about to finish my second playthrough, and I just can't get over how much I love this game :) One of the great things about it (and all imsims) is that you don't have to be thougher or faster than your enemies, you just have to be smarter. If you are, even the hardest difficutly is not a problem. Another great thing is that you can come up with challenges for yourself, which makes every playthrough a unique experience.
1:23:53 I believe the next Deus Ex installment could have Frisk playing an anti-Aug fanatic: He stands guard next to glass jars (because they're not mechanical), then is shown to be highly suspicious of a machine. He also looks stealthy and up to no good alongside those cardboard boxes. The Iluminatti employing secret cat agents makes total sense if you think about it. Awesome video! Keep it up, my man!
This is the second video of yours that I’ve watched (first one was the complete Bioshock timeline) and I’ve got to say, I like what I see so far. You’re very in depth with your explanations and breakdowns, but at the same time you’re not putting me to sleep. Keep it up, man!
Came for the game analysis. Staying for the cooking segments. I'd be very happy if there was a place I could go back and watch the cooking stuff in their own videos
Have you ever considered doing a video on Kingdom Come Deliverance? I honestly see it as an immersive sim, and also one of my favourite games. Plus, it has an actual charlatan in the game
Great analysis! I didn't know half of this stuff was on Human revolution, I will replay it ASAP. God bless everyone who does videos about immersive sims.
One of my favourite game series of all time. Just completed a no kills, no alarms playthrough and saw so many things I missed in other playthroughs. I really hope with Embracer Group purchasing Eidos Montreal, they are willing to revive this series. Mankind Divided ended on too much of a cliffhanger!
Really hope Eidos can come back to finish Jensen’s story. HR and MD were some of my best gaming experiences, and even got me to try the original Deus Ex game. It’s so sad we’ll never get to see the bridge between MD and the original game.
About other games that also have some kind of Director's Cut commentary tracks: "Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher's Bay" also did this in an excellent way.
This is one of my To 5 games. I've played through Vanilla multiple times, I never knew you could use explosive rounds on the breakable walls. Great video!
LOVE this game. Have replayed it hundreds of times. It was there for me during a very rough time and still holds up well. DX:MD was solid also. Super excited to know that a new Deus Ex game will eventually be released!
Mankind Divided is one of my favorite games of all time now, I really want to continue and finish Adams story. I'm gonna get HR at some point. Damn that stupid buyer company for cutting this series off.
Im like a minute in and already like... entirely in. Hearing that you modified your channel to add cat pictures because your grandma liked them is just... its the best thing ever!
My strategy for boss battles on pacific-stealth was to collect a lot of grenades. The pattern to toss grenades, as far as I remember was to toss the gas grenades first - since the boss takes more time to react after coughing, and while they are coughing, toss more frag grenades, and toss another gas grenade right before the first one runs out. You could take down Yelena with a lot of stun guns when she comes close enough to you during the boss fights.
There are several grenade/mine combinations to take down the first boss, but you can do it with just one EMP greanade and use the barrels and cannisters in the room. You can take down Yelena with one well placed EMP mine. You can take down Namir , with a simple take-down.
I could never figure out how the social augment was supposed to work. I found it much easier just to use the normal dialogue options and pick the answers that seem to fit the situation than try and muddle my way through the obtuse rock paper scissor system of the augment.
You have to keep track of every time one of the bars lights up, and kinda just add every lit segment to a talley in yur head. By the end of the social battle, whatever talley has the most points added up is likely to be their personality type, and that determines what you use to instantly destroy their argument with fax and logitech. Iirc the game will let you know which option correlates to which personality type, but it's been a while, so I'm not certain on that.
Honestly, really like hacking, find it a fun neat breather from combat. Sure its a bit of a praxis dump but hacking gets you lots of XP to get even more praxis anyway so.
Hacking also gets you lots of good loot and exploration options so it's a pretty good thing to spec into, tho like in the video you can do just fine without it albeit inconvenient
"Making a mainline entry to a game series feel like the games that came before and improve upon that." Oh how those days are long gone. Was fun, loved HR.
I don’t think HR matched the original in terms of options, tools, and approach, but I do think it was a very well made and fun game. It is very rare I play a game I like so much I do a back to back replay and Deus Ex: Human Revolution is on that exclusive list.
Here's the real immersive sim anti Namir strat: In the initial release (not sure about the updated one) you can throw a hacked turret into the elevator and then back out of it ahead of you into the boss arena. He is not up to taking you on while an autogun shreds him.
My first play through was on the hardest setting and with no kills yet I didn't even notice the boss fights, yeah I died a few times but I don't get why they caused such a outcry. The first game had moments that put you out of your comfort zone and no one mentions them.
As far as I can tell, everyone who hates the boss fights hasn't been exploring thoroughly. There's easily enough XP in this game to spec into both stealth and combat. I only ever stealth through it and on the hardest difficulty the only tricky boss fight is Barrett, because of how early in the game he appears.
I think the issue was with people who are nonlethal purists. When I fist played the game I was pretty confused that I had to kill the bosses when I was able to avoid killing anyone else for the rest of the game.
I was literally just thinking to myself how and why you got the idea to use your cat as your avatar, because I honestly love it so much. Its pretty unique and your cat is cute. The varying pictures of still animation are more interesting than most "Avatar crosses their arms" or is "clasping their face in shock" or "doing a cartoonish angry gesture" The talking heads are fine and all, but Frisk is the best
I really love Human Revolution, it's my introduction to im sims, and later on I notice one of the soundtrack were sampling a Vietnamese song that I knew, it's nice. Also ciopino.
Oh yeah, the DLC actually puts a hard cap on how many praxis you can come out of it with. It's usually just an issue that affects NG+, which the original didn't have, but also like, still sucks, imo. Just like the rest of the DLC. (Idc what anyone says, I hated it.)
The last boss fight was the most frustrating fights (if you made the wrong choice earlier) of all times. I remember it vividly, like it was yesterday. Death upon death upon death. Reload after reload. It was pure horror.
The deus ex games' stories are so good and exciting (and they tell the near future in the real world ALOT) that I find myself as having the same excited feeling when watching suspenseful movies (think Uncut Gems and Good Time). An amazing series and Human Revolution is a special entry.
Ok gotta say my christmas eve was not very holly nor jolly. But after coming home from my fast food job, I gotta say I'm fairly fuckin happy now. Thank you.
The one HUUUGE complaint I have about this game is the cutscenes. They ALL completely destroy the immersion. The lighting is different. There is a fuzz filter over everything. Or at least it looks like that on higher rez displays. So every out of engine scene ends up looking like it doesn't belong. Like when you find the hacker in sarrif. Goes from a brightly lit room when you walk in to a dingy, smoke filled underground gambling basement vibe.
Great review! I've spent like 60 hours in this game and still learned something new from it. But we definitely need to learn more about your trip to Russia.
Didn't enjoy this game first time round. Then I took the advice of a friend and ignored all of the free preorder gear (the satchel charges etc) - then I actually had a lot of fun with the game since it clearly wasn't designed with them in mind. Kinda like Dead Space 2, weirdly.
It's kind of nuts that we can talk about "deepfake scandals" as a thing that happens in this game even though deepfake wasn't even close to existing when this game came out.
@@marth6270 Its babies first immersive sim, waters down most concepts to nonexistance, I can see if people are used to playing AAA slop this would be profound but to those of us that grew up on 90's games it just seems pretty crappy really.
For the boss in the body exhibition thing I randomly charged them when they leapt over the barrier and was able to take them out with one of the hand to hand take downs.
I'd say that Mankind Divided is what revived the old Deus Ex for me. Human Revolution was good story-wise in my opinion but it was just like any other futuristic shooter game to me
I made my Steam account to buy this game. €12,50 back in '12. Still replay the original (never touched the Director's Cut despite owning it for years now) every now and then. Good vid, Chuck.
@Ty Bey The directors cut ran terribly back then (performance is almost halfed). But I think it doesn't matter anymore on modern PCs. Also you have to mod in the yellow Filter, which was sadly removed in the directors cut. Other than that it's better in every way. You can't play the missing link DLC seperately anymore but that's subjective I guess.
My only gripe with this game is that the opening is excruciating after multiple play throughs. I used to keep a save file for games like this that would let you get going. Far Cry has the same problem on some of the titles.
Guardians of the galaxy was amazing though, it blew me away how good it was. Deserving of the overwhelming positive rating it has on steam, no easy feat. It showed the class of Eidos as a top notch developer...sad to see it pre judged based on the terrible avengers game that came right before it, but that was to be expected...
I'll be honest, I've been playing Deus ex sincie 2002 so I would agree with Hbomb. I think the graphics are nice, setting looks amazing and the characters are good, I like the augments but the praxis system is just god awful, really a lot of the rest just isn't very good or outright watered down from the original. I find it a bit amusing this video talks about the bits that make it the game that it was as upgrades?! Yes they make the game easier... but thats not what an immersive sim is really about. You can decide like 4 things in the entire game that matter, Also the story really has no weight to it really, when I finished the first one I was mind blown, finishing HR? I just said, oh another mass effect 3 ending... then never thought of the game again. They got it a bit better with MD though.
I was lucky enough to have the friend who recommended HR to me also advise me to invest in the typhoon for bosses and not get the chip. He didn't elaborate as to what that meant, but was insistent that I remember those two things

Everytime i played this game i found another way or route to complete the mission or missions inside the hub areas. One of the best games ever and i am a fan of the goldfilter. So much small detail in this game and the sequel too, shame that Square ruined the franchise.
The Gold filter was important to the aesthetics. Shame they removed it in the director's cut.
@@bigwavesun Don't worry, they put in the muddy grey filter instead.
I definitely need more Adam Jenshin Impact in my life.
That was, by a margin, the best game review I've ever seen. Well done sir.
While I didn't expect a cooking lesson in the middle of a video game essay I'm here for it and want to try making it
I think this will be a "one for them, one for me" type of scenario, where Eidos MTL couldnt say no to a profitable game like Guardians of the Galaxy after poor sales from Mankind Divided, but given their newfound financial security and success will allow them to finish the Jensen trilogy.
Hey, MD sales did Very well, it's just not up to square Enix StAnDaRd, which we don't know how much they expected. Especially, if only SE didn't fuck up with half ass content/story and in game purchase.
And then shortly after this video launched, Square sold the IP to invest in NFTs, right before that market crashed and they lost their investment
God bless everyone who does videos about immersive sims.
its a ok, kinda boring game, especially compared to prey or dishonored 2
One of my favourite game series of all time. Just completed a no kills, no alarms playthrough and saw so many things I missed in other playthroughs. I really hope with Embracer Group purchasing Eidos Montreal, they are willing to revive this series. Mankind Divided ended on too much of a cliffhanger!
Bruv its a boring game, play prey or dishonored 2
DXHR is one of the best games ever made, no contest.
And Embracer group is about to sell Eidos Montreal now. When are we getting a new deus ex man...
Its still a good game i go back to even years later.
Really hope Eidos can come back to finish Jensen’s story. HR and MD were some of my best gaming experiences, and even got me to try the original Deus Ex game. It’s so sad we’ll never get to see the bridge between MD and the original game.
I doubt it will ever reach the Deus Ex timeline but I could see the NSF being a growing presence in the next game
Congratulations on your 100k subscribers, Charlatan! You're one of a few in this hell of site that actually deserves that.
Strat-edgy video on Prey AND Charlatan's Deus Ex: HR retrospective? What a way to end the year. Merry belated Christmas and happy new year!
DXHR is a more than worthy sequel to the original from 2000.
Prequel*
Its a prequel tho
Played this 6-7 years back, bought it for summer sale as the directors cut on steam, still havent played it..good time to play it now i guess
Mankind Divided is one of my favorite games of all time now, I really want to continue and finish Adams story. I'm gonna get HR at some point. Damn that stupid buyer company for cutting this series off.
Robot/turret domination and then explore at your leisure in the middle of chaos was my usual play style.
I found it unavoidable if I wanted to go stealth.
"Making a mainline entry to a game series feel like the games that came before and improve upon that." Oh how those days are long gone. Was fun, loved HR.
Have any of you ever grasped the true power of vending machines in this game? True emerging gameplay there.
Glad I took the time to really watch this and pay attention to it. It might actually get me to dig up and try HR again.
I just wanted to reminisce about this awesome game and now I have a new seafood recipe to try wow
Wholesome Charles putting his cat for his grandma that watches his vids. That’s nice.
Now that's a christmass gift ! Enjoy your evening everyone !
I don’t think HR matched the original in terms of options, tools, and approach, but I do think it was a very well made and fun game. It is very rare I play a game I like so much I do a back to back replay and Deus Ex: Human Revolution is on that exclusive list.
Dragging unconscious guards through lasers is one of my biggest pleasures and greatest pastimes!
I restarted the friggin game when Malik died in my first playthru. I wasnt having it.
Same.
Here's the real immersive sim anti Namir strat: In the initial release (not sure about the updated one) you can throw a hacked turret into the elevator and then back out of it ahead of you into the boss arena.
He is not up to taking you on while an autogun shreds him.
I like the cat pics too. As a cat man i appreciate them as much as immersive sims.. Grandma does indeed get more cats if she likes cats..
@@MrACABification Your not wrong.
The varying pictures of still animation are more interesting than most "Avatar crosses their arms" or is "clasping their face in shock" or "doing a cartoonish angry gesture"
The talking heads are fine and all, but Frisk is the best
Nice. Just In time for Christmas. Merry Christmas lad !
I think I finally need to give this one a try, loved the original. Thanks for the video.
I really love Human Revolution, it's my introduction to im sims, and later on I notice one of the soundtrack were sampling a Vietnamese song that I knew, it's nice.
Also ciopino.
Hey, out of curiosity, which song is this and which part of the soundtrack samples it?
@@control8able dunno why my previous comment didn't show after 6 whole months, but it's the Hive theme. ua-cam.com/video/s4_Ky7EQWlg/v-deo.html
The DLC was neat but last I played it I was doing a completionist run and after the DLC ended up with LESS augments than before the DLC.
Laser gun is useful for last boss.
The deus ex games' stories are so good and exciting (and they tell the near future in the real world ALOT) that I find myself as having the same excited feeling when watching suspenseful movies (think Uncut Gems and Good Time). An amazing series and Human Revolution is a special entry.
I, too, would like to see the Safdie Bros direct a film version of “Deus Ex”
Merry Christmas Charlatan. Keep up the great content in 2022
Great review!
Kinda like Dead Space 2, weirdly.
yessss. an amazing game. favorite series of all time.
It's kind of nuts that we can talk about "deepfake scandals" as a thing that happens in this game even though deepfake wasn't even close to existing when this game came out.
Sorry, I skipped the cooking bit because I don't eat seafood.
Understandable. Have a nice day.
Liking and commenting for engagement, and it is very well deserved. Awesome vid Charl
Was new to the concept of an immersive sim, but as it turns out, a lot of my favorite games just are that. Very cool
its one of the worst AAA immersive sims
@@marth6270 Its babies first immersive sim, waters down most concepts to nonexistance, I can see if people are used to playing AAA slop this would be profound but to those of us that grew up on 90's games it just seems pretty crappy really.
For the boss in the body exhibition thing I randomly charged them when they leapt over the barrier and was able to take them out with one of the hand to hand take downs.
I'd say that Mankind Divided is what revived the old Deus Ex for me. Human Revolution was good story-wise in my opinion but it was just like any other futuristic shooter game to me
Holy cow this is going to be a great video
I made my Steam account to buy this game. €12,50 back in '12. Still replay the original (never touched the Director's Cut despite owning it for years now) every now and then. Good vid, Chuck.
@Ty Bey The directors cut ran terribly back then (performance is almost halfed). But I think it doesn't matter anymore on modern PCs. Also you have to mod in the yellow Filter, which was sadly removed in the directors cut. Other than that it's better in every way. You can't play the missing link DLC seperately anymore but that's subjective I guess.
@Ty Bey I don't know. I don't miss it in Mankind Devided but it fits really well into the aesthetics of HR. I actually liked it ^^
My only gripe with this game is that the opening is excruciating after multiple play throughs. I used to keep a save file for games like this that would let you get going. Far Cry has the same problem on some of the titles.
After I got the trophy necessities, I use a save file that starts at the helipad with Malik after getting my adjustment from Frank.
For Boss Battles, one word Mines.
Regardless of what i am playing i always save mines to yeet at them.
'Advanced Vibe Check Techniques'
Im stealing that.
babe wake up new charlatan wonder video
Not going to lie I usually skip the cooking segment but I'm as fuck so watching charlatan struggle with a damn tilapia bag killed me
Unironically epic cooking section! You’ve inspired me (a pro-amateur home cook) to make some BIG SOOP
"if Grandma wants more silly cat pictures grandma gets more silly cat pictures" truly is one of the sentences ever
Don't forget to Augment your Preorders!! What a genius marketing idea that totally did wonders for the IP!
Watching this video and HBomberGuy's critique of Human Revolution back to back sure creates a whiplash.
You can decide like 4 things in the entire game that matter,
Also the story really has no weight to it really, when I finished the first one I was mind blown, finishing HR? I just said, oh another mass effect 3 ending... then never thought of the game again.
They got it a bit better with MD though.
@@zakbrown9256 True that, MD slaps.
The stun gun makes the first 2 boss battles ridiculously simple.
Stun gun op asf for most of the game tbh 🤣
Dude, both content and cioppino recipe is f..ing perfect! Thank's alot! More cooking!
i subbed the tilapia for calf liver and thin pasta for bucatini, was good.
Hugh Darrow pulling off that cloak thing like a mad lad.
I was lucky enough to have the friend who recommended HR to me also advise me to invest in the typhoon for bosses and not get the chip. He didn't elaborate as to what that meant, but was insistent that I remember those two things
Send Gam-Gam Wonder my best holiday regards.
