Oh man. Easily my favorite and most important Finnish band ever and I'm so happy to see their music reach new ears almost 13 years after they quit. I kind of joke that for me Finnish music died that day. Almost teared up watching this video. Musically if you want melancholy, both in the melodies and the vocals, this is your band right here. For me this is one of those bands you come back to and take a moment to actually think: Fuck, this is some amazing music right here.
Unfortunately the band doesn't exist anymore. They were active 1989-2005 and in 2005 they announced their upcoming album would be their last, fittingly titled The Funeral Album. They did a farewell tour supporting that album and finally did their very last show ever here in my hometown of Oulu (basically theirs as well)... glad I was there! That show was also filmed and released as a dvd called Buried Alive. It's also fitting that the last song of their last album is called "End of the Road", which is also the final song they played live. Properly planned exit right there.
You like the solos? Me too. Nearly all the music was composed by Miika Tenkula, one of the guitar players. He died of a heart attack in 2009 when he was 34. Saddens me to this day, but this video is proof of the saying his/their music lives on. Have fun on your journey through Sentenced. Noose is a fitting starting point considering it's possibly the first song I ever heard from them in 1996 and one of their classic tracks.
I struggle to recommend or request only one song, but here goes, one of their happier songs: Cross My Heart and Hope to Die
I was there too. Will not never forget.
Sentences and Miika are not dead. They will live on in our minds and hearts.
Cross my Heart and Hope to Die is one of my favourite song by them, but I recommended to A&P(in another comment)to listen The Suicider and Forever Lost.
At least you could saw them live, I hadn't the opportunity to see them live and that's the only thing that I regret in my life.

I had enormously blessed to see them live in Mexico in the most unlikely date they'd play outside of their european Funeral tour. Oh man, fucking tears of joy.

If you want some "melodeath-ish" Sentenced, you should try Desert by night.
Not the most legendary but important influence in Finnish metal in early days.

Yeah. Tenkula was way too underrated metal guitarist out there. He was planning some new project with Vesa Ranta before he passed.

They started as a Death Metal band but became more melodic until becoming a fantastic Gothic Metal band. For a while Finland produced many great Gothic Metal bands in a similar vein as Sentenced, bands like H.I.M., Charon, Poisonblack, The Black League, To/Die/For, Entwine, For My Pain... (with Tuomas from Nightwish and some ex-members of Kalmah), among others.
My recommendation for the next song to react to is a very emotional one. Its the last song they have written for they last album and is perfectly titled "End of the Road", the version to react is taken from the "Buried Alive" dvd, it was the last song they played on their last live show. And I love the solo on this song.
The Down tour gig in 1997 was such an amazing experience! My ears never stopped ringing, to this day. Was worth it, though.
Try Poisonblack - Rush. If you like Sentenced, it is Ville Laihiala band that he created after Sentenced.
Posonblack started in 2000. Ville created Poisonblack same time when Sentenced recorded Crimson album

This is my all time favorite band. Seeing them playing sometime around 1997 was the first ever live gig I saw. I hope you have time to get to know their other production as well and enjoy the band as I have done during the past 20 years (damn I feel old now).
Even if you're not a fan of Sentenced and don't know their history, you still HAVE TO watch their last live song: Sentenced - End of the Road live video. That performance is packed with emotion. Everybody realizes at the same moment that this is it.

Oh yes! This brought back memories from my youth.
Sentenced was disbanded in 2005, and singer Ville Laihiala has since been active in two different bands (Poisonblack and S-TOOL), both of which are more in the genre of rock, rather than metal.
There's more than a handful of songs I could recommend from Sentenced, but if I had to pick a few, I would say:
1) One With Misery
2) Vengeance Is Mine
3) Killing Me Killing You
I know how hectic your schedule must be with all requests and new songs releasing, so I don't have high hopes for you getting a chance to listen to all three. But if you do decide to do one more from them, I hope its number 1. :)

Love you guys! Thanks for taking my childhood favorite and putting them in the spotlight: They deserve it! Great channel and content. Now that you are still in the underground please rewiuw (sorry from sweden) some Metal that is not in the mainstream like Trail Of Insects.
My number1 band and so much underrated. They have been killed long time ago so there is no more to come since 2005. Sad that they never break up in the great world as nowdays.
Sentenced has some of the most beautiful videos ever made, like Killing Me Killing You and the whole farewell DVD is pure gold.

Yeah, finally! For me Sentenced is the best medicine that helps me survive through the shitty autumn and winter here in Finland. Their lyrics are filled with Finnish melancholy, despair and depression. I love also the black humor they use in some of their lyrics, such as in the "Luxury of a grave". I bet Sentenced has saved numerous human lives from self-destructiveness with their music.

It is hard to recommend any specific song, though. I think Sentenced is a band that requires longer listening before you really start loving them and although the music is great, you really have to pay attention to lyrics, too. For example, "Everything is nothing" is after all quite a simple song, but still very powerful. Personally, I can't name a single "not great" song from their "Amok" -> "The Funeral album" era. "North from here" is mostly great too, although I am not that much into that style.
Thanks for this vid, maybe Eternal Tears of Sorrow or Noumena some day? There are plenty of great Finnish bands you haven't checked out yet.
They saved mine for sure :D You could name several similar Finnish bands in style but none of those really compare to what Sentenced was, a unique blend of melody, talent, melancholy and humour, and if you take away either melancholy or humour you could find many international bands aswell, but then you would really lose the essence what is Sentenced.
Sentenced for sure was one of Damnation Plan's inspirations.
That Paradise Lost comparison is pretty spot on, since they had a similar trajectory as a band and I think they kinda fed off each other as their careers progressed. They did several tours together and whatnot.

Sentenced is one of my favourite bands and I could not wait for you to do them, although if the choice of the song was up to me, it would probably not be Noose
Finally you guys found Sentenced, they are easily one of the best band ever from finland. If you're going to do more from them, you should check out Brief is the Light or No one there. Brief is the light is about life and how tomorrow should never be taken for granted. No one there has such a harsh but yet so beautiful video about what it really means when you say through thick and thin to the priest. They're not the heavier songs from Sentenced, but they are one of the most beautiful ones, yet still heavy.
Man this song is legendary, still sees a lot of play in Finnish rock radios! You mentioned At the Gates in the beginning, but couldn't find a reaction to IMO their best song "Under a Serpent Sun". HIGHLY recommended for a reaction!
Might be just me, but are there far too few Sentenced reactions going around? I'd love to see you guys react to "Farewell", "Broken", "Fragile", "No one there"; or anything else :) Sentenced are, and always will be, one of my fave bands. Saw them (2002) in a small town in Finland (of course it exists) and it's still one of my best tours...

I'm a big fan of Sentenced. They were an excellent band who had a cool progression from a pure death metal band to what you saw here. You gotta love a band whose happiest song is still about death.
You should check their album "Amok", I'm not recommending a song in particular because the entire album is a masterpiece, any song you choose will blow your mind. The guitar work is out of this world.

You should check out "North From Here" by them. It's from their early days and has a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT sound, with harsh vocals, some amazing melodic tremolo riffs and a sinister yet epic atmosphere like Dissection.

Sentenced always had poppy hooks in their music, great as a gateway band into metal. Music videos often told a whole another story. Both No One There and Killing Me, Killing You have some of the most humane video stories told in metal. Hope you get around to those one day.

Another same era band from Finland is Tarot with a bit in same style. That's the original band of Marco Hietala (Nightwish) and he sings there too. His brother plays the guitar. There most legendary song is Wings of Darkness. You can find the original video from 1986 or the remake from 2011. Another great song with a video is Pyre of Gods.

I recommend to you another band, called Poisonblack, the singer and guitarist(Ville Laihiala)is the same one who used to sing in Sentenced. He continued his career with Poisonblack after the disolution of Sentences until 2015.

You should try something from: North From Here. More into Black metallish death. One of the very first Finnish metal albums. And in that genre very rare in any country at that time.

since you seem to like finnish metal so much, there is one band you gotta review, band called stone. Stone was kinda pioneer metal band in finnish scene, they were thrash/speed metal band with progressive influences. I´d love to see no anaesthesia reviewed by you guys. the song or the whole album. I can come up with a shitload of stone songs you could dig into!

Ville's voice always reminds me of Moe Szyzlak from Simpsons. When i was a kid and first heard them i thought it was Moes band.

One of the few bands that changed a lot (from blackened Death Metal to Goth Rock) and remained good throughout, unlike say Amorphis and In Flames. Good to see them here. From ther early heavy period I would recommend 'Suffocated Beginning of Life'.
david viteri Amorphis not good? Are you high? The ONLY album of theirs that was lacking was Far From the Sun. Otherwise, they've been incredible.

Definitely do Gunmen by Orden Ogan. I also highly recommend Pictish Pride by Suidakra. Great German Melodic Death Metal with Celtic Influences.

While I don’t dislike this song, I have to say I’m a bigger fan of their previous album, AMOK. Maybe it’s because it is the one that introduced me to the band, and that carries weight, but the singer is different, the whole sound is different. This was my first Sentenced song:

Check out their song Neverlasting without a video. They had this "don't give a fuck" attitude in everything they did so their live performances might not be the best things to watch if you don't know the songs.
You should check out No one there like a lot of people have suggestd.

Noose is a great song, but Sentenced has much better songs(in my opinion). Sentenced in their first era(1989 - 1995)they used to play Melodic Death Metal, and in the second era(1996 - 2005)they used to play Heavy/Gothic/Doom Metal. Good old finnish depresso metal. You should check out more. Noose is their Enter Sandman. They have so much better songs. No one there for example. Such a sad song.
