- It's been a pretty smooth playthrough of New Game + for me - I only lost 1 hero (aside from the final boss) and finished in 58 weeks, so there's a lot of leeway for beating NG+.
I feel like I fumbled really badly in the first stage of the fight - I was kind of completely off of my game there and took way more attacks than I needed to. I got lucky and got a virtue though, so I guess I love being rewarded for my misplays. The fight wasn't very difficult anyway and I'm confident I'd have still won with an affliction instead of a virtue
On the last stage of the fight, I was actually testing at the start of the fight if the deathblow ability was used at certain HP thresholds - my theory at the time was that he uses the deathblow at 2/3 and 1/3 health and I was kind of testing that. I was also trying a bit to set it up to see if I could kill him before he did the 2nd deathblow, but that didn't really pan out since he used the first deathblow earlier than I'd hoped. I think if you set up properly it's probably possible to only suffer 1 death on this boss.

OmegaHunter08 of course the comic reveals that she once was actually a rich citizen until she started her career in grave robbing. I might be over thinking this but I guess her sacrifice might signify that she truly has gone from an ordinary civilian into a true warrior.

So the dark god at the center of the earth allegedly responsible for all life and an entity of cosmic power gets BTFO by a man with an axe, some guy and his dog, a chick with a crossbow, and a lady with throwing knives and a nice hat?
If with BTFO, you mean, sees his aberrant flesh's unwillingness and decides to turn over and nap on. That is kinda the point: You are not fighting to win here. For this thing, being beaten is like you waking up, noticing that your arm has grown tired, turning around and sleeping a bit longer. Did your arm beat you up? The point is less beating him up and more making sure that there are no yummy cultists to feed him and make him want to wake up quicker.

The Narrator discovered that the Earth itself was just a giant stone eggshell, housing a sleeping creature of unimaginable size. An Outer God in its infancy basically, and that Humanity/all life on the surface evolved from it. It'll eventually awaken, cracking open the Earth like an egg and venturing off into the darkness of space. It's also implied that all life on Earth has some form of Unconscious Hive-Mind connected to the creature, thus metaphorically making all of Humanity one big "Family".

I think that is the direction they are going for in the next game. You van only have one of each class so you actually get attached to these unique characters. When you can have 4 crusaders they kinda lose meaning as individuals...

The fact of the matter is, your success is meaningless. Everything is terrible. It will always be terrible.
Pretty sure it has no philosophical quality. It's just the ancestor doing shits and enjoying himself, making tributes to lovecraft and horror films left and right, while players cleaning up all his messes.
So in the end, the earth was no more then a shell for a beast, we came from it, and soon will return to it, and its suppose to bring end the the world. When the dungeon was open, it awakened hideous beasts and beings, but by entering it caused the heart to awaken and destroy the world?

+PetersaberHD Its funny, i been thinking about it, and really if they keep delaying the inevitable it will come to a point were it will get easier and easier to delay it and finally to the point were it wont be inevitable anymore. I mean, think about, these were just 4 dudes with swords beating a "cosmic horror", with military equipment today it would be almost trivial to delay it, and if they keep delaying it until they become a spacefaring civilization then threat is almost null and void.

oh really? But then again, the Cultists will also be better armed, the new abominations will also escalate technologically, you're wrongly assuming that only one side will get stronger. Also, with tech growth, the consequences of going insane also grow.
Also, it's very likely that even when put back to sleep, it got more powerful, as you fed it two stern flesh lumps for a midnight snack. It also soaked in oceans of strong blood from previous areas.
And remember - for the Horror to succeed, humanity has to slip only once - meanwhile, it can try again, again, and again, forever. Normal campaign is basicly easy mode - try beating NG+. Very few people beat it fairly, most failed at least once. Either they took too long and the Horror finished gestating, or you lost too many strong bodies, and the sacrifices were numerous enough for it to get too strong.
NG+ is the second iteraton of the cycle - and guess what, it got much harder to defeat the Horror, while the technology didn't advance.

notice how the Narrator says "OMAYKA" in the "alpha and omega" line. this add SO much tension in the game, and depth in the voice-acting. you'd be surprised how many singers slur lines and it works in adding "FEEL" into the song/game

A bit of a late reply but.. I didn't record the rest of my playthrough, but it was mostly the same was my first 3 darkest dungeon quests (except with easier enemies). You can probably tell from my roster that I pretty heavily favoured the plague doctor+vestal+crusader+hellion composition (and especially vestals as I usually used vestals with some of my other teams too).
I had a mark team that I generally used for bosses (I usually had a vestal instead of the graverobber, but this fight was a special case as it was just 1 fight and you also heal part way through the fight for free, so having a healer is unnecessary), and I had some other characters that I mostly used because I was trying to level 1 of each character for the caretaker goals (before I got bored and decided to just finish the game rather than beat all of the champion bosses). The man at arms was useful for the 2nd darkest dungeon, and I did run some more specialized compositions for some of the bosses (like occultist + vestal vs. the prophet, using the occultist to debuff the prophet and easily outheal the debuffed damage with the vestal), but for the most part I focused on the plague doctor+vestal+crusader+hellion for generic dungeons and some bosses, and the arbalest+vestal+houndmaster+bounty hunter for some of the bosses that the stun+heals team couldn't deal with very well.
On the note of moves - I mostly ignored AoE abilities with a few exceptions (AoE stuns are the big exception in particular), I gave every character that had access to one a stun (stuns are incredibly good - you usually outnumber the enemy so being able to trade turn for turn with the enemy is generally very favourable for you.. even if it's a bit slow). I tried to get at least 1 healing ability on every character that had access to one (self heal or otherwise), and usually whatever slots were leftover I decided on a class by class basis.
As far as upgrading the town goes, I upgraded the stagecoach roster size pretty quickly - I was only getting 3 heroes per week from the stagecoach rather than upgrade that part of it, but the roster size was upgraded pretty much whenever my roster was already full (and I didn't pick up characters I didn't care about of course). I focused on the sanitarium, guild, and blacksmith after that.. and honestly the rest of the buildings I didn't really care about - I'd upgraded them with whatever I had leftovers but I wouldn't use any of the heirlooms that were still useful for those 3. I'd like to make a note though that I played very very conservatively in dungeons - I literally never used the tavern or abbey in this entire playthrough, so if you actually make heavy use of them they might be more important than I make them out to be.

I play really *really* conservatively in dungeons (If you've seen the first 2 darkest dungeon quest videos you'll understand what I mean) - I always managed my stress to the point that I didn't even use the tavern or abbey a single time in my playthrough (sometimes my guys got stress out a bit but i waited it out with the -5 stress per week). I also always went on the longest dungeons possible every week (except for the boss runs).
+MrLisreal NG+ is hard mode, Monsters are tougher, deal more damage, there's a time limit and a death limit. Ofc it's a great challenge!

Nothing impossible. This game is childishly easy tbh. It's just the hype and the ammount of casuals playing and trying to make the game sound hardcore. Basically the entire strategy is about killing each next target as fast as possible.
Interestingly enough I went exactly same party composition when it comes to hero choice for my 1st clear of that level. Though found myself being carried by BH, grave digger being the lowest point of team and at 1st stage of the fight Arba turning into healbot.
Edit: owait, I didn't have Houndmaster left, went for Highwaymen as substitute.
The fact that when you fight the ancestor he says nothing and just laughs when he crits is really nice. It really sets an atmosphere for the fight. When you fought other abominations you had a sense of "I'm not alone the ancestor is with me". When you fight him ,he doesn't say a word and when you see his true form when he attacks... Well that feeling is completely lost, it's frightening and fantastic at the same time.

surprisingly, this final fight might be the second easiest boss in the whole game (with Brigand Pounders takes the place of top 1), any well planned team armed with sheer amount of stun and damage can survive the first 2 phases without any heal at all, even in NG+. After that it's simply a damage race vs. Heart of Darkness, which rarely goes wrong in any case.

The point is to stop this thing from ever waking up fully. You say it's weak, but it had the power to DEMAND that you sacrifice two of your own characters to it. Not ask or just kill them. It made you pick.
As the Ancestor says, if it ever fully wakes, it will destroy the planet from the inside and all of humanity with it in an instant.
The good gods of Lovecraftian horror are described as typically passive, not getting involved directly and leaving man to try and deal with the old gods.

Until it reincarnates and starts the cycle anew, exactly the way it has for all eternity. In the final cutscene, the heir realizes all this and the futility of his efforts and the efforts of man. And so he kills himself, but not before appointing another poor soul to continue the cycle of delaying the infinite inevitable.

Anarchy Empire I think he became something like one of the Great Old Ones, an alien godlike species which are one of the antagonists in Lovecrafts books.
The game is HEAVILLY influenced by it. The story explains that your ancestor found the world of these Great Old Ones (the dungeon) and went absolutely insane by it, experimenting on townsfolk and himself. All of the bosses are either his human experiments or are one of the inhabitants of that world, like the beasts that look like Cthulu.

The second is what the ending implies. Kind of stupid, along with the 1hit KO he has. But its the journey that matters I guess.
Watching it again it seems like the family is doing it for generations by now. Another descendant going into the Darkest Dungeon to send back the Old God into it's slumber lest the world ends since the planet is pretty much dirt on the Old One's slumbering body.
Well this is typical Lovecraftian horror... I am not a fan of it either...
So, in short, the family is basically the only thing buying time before the inevitable end comes?

New game plus no the higher difficulty yes. You got limited weeks to beat the game and a limited number of deaths. If im not mistaken was 13 or 18 hero deaths and the final battle kills 2 heroes no matter what so be careful

That said, I DID dismiss a few people, so even though that doesn't count against you in regards to the NG+ fail state rules, he still might not have been impressed with me tossing away a few sorry souls like garbage after they'd outlived their usefulness.

Only in New Game +, in which case the game will be automatically over once 81 weeks pass or 13 heroes die.

I got 4/5 arbalist crits and it just died before it even got the time to do much(sadly killed off one of my partymembers still). Even though it was rather anticlimactic I do understand you don't want to make this boss too frustrating with it's instantkill mechanic.

I feel like this ending is...fucking stupid, legit the whole 'Oh yeah it's just a cycle' cliché is by no means satisfying for the player at most times, I know the whole 'happy ending' is a cliché too, but... when it comes to a game like this influencing stress, rage, and annoyances from beginning to end. A happy ending where you break the god damned curse and begin the reconstruction of the estate would be somewhat better to this game....Yet, no it's just a gigantic 'fuck you' to the player for an ending... corgirino kripparino kinda but Dark souls give you feelings.İf you learn the history of Dark souls (it has got many tragic stories of hopefull warriors). This game(Darkest Dungeon) is not really give you that feels. But People think as Being a lovecraftian game this game is succesfull. Well I think this is my first lovecraftian game so, I cannot really comment about it.Well I played a Game Called "Faster Than Light" but do not sure if it is a lovecraftian or not. Also if Darkest dungeon and Faster than light is both lovecraftian games, Man I liked this kind.
To be honest I kinda liked that about it, if only because of its lovecraftian influences. Due to the way the elder gods and Lovecraft's universe works its not always able to be translated into a game, since most players of game find satisfaction in beating the "Big bad" at the end. However the elder gods and their minions are so vast and so powerful they break perception and reality,heck there is one that even looking at them would cause a sane mind to break instantly... So yes in the game you go up against them but how do you defeat something that is so beyond our own limits of perception.
In that regard i love Darkest dungeon, there is no "good triumphs evil" there is no "defeating the big bad" because the enemy is just that strong that its hopeless, an endless cycle of struggle.

It's not bs, it's a boss mechanic so that if your crew is unprepared, you will not be able to out dps the boss
+Raleigh Allen Its a story thing. People dying is supposed to feed the eldritch god thing. It is quiet possible to get there without losing people, se they had to cheat.
Mantis if you're hard enough you can one shot the boss and lose no one.

It's more that the boss you fight here is merely a fragment pf a massive lovecraftian cosmic entity. It is eternal no katter how many times it dies, it only delays the inevitable. It forces you to sacrifice two people as a display of the raw power that mere fragment possesses, as well as create a moral conundrum for the player.

I always found Lovecraftian madness and despair to be pretty overrated. Same as here. Universe is big and it's rather obvious that not only Homo Sapiens are there. We managed to develop civilization but there are still things we can't do. We are supposed to be like these shopkeepers, blobs of meat coming from the Heart. It's supposed to be disgusting, but we are not just sacks of meat, we have our personalities, morality and do the right thing to protect the innocent. This is what makes us different from monsters. I also doubt the Heart is going to explode in next week and it's delayed everytime the game ends, so just beat it over and over until it's no problem. Whatever.
Actually, having extra hand or two could be helpful sometimes.
