I was on dialysis for 8 years, and nurses wanted to keep pushing me to do dialysis treatments at home. I always declined that option. I wanted to do my treatments at the clinic with other hemodialysis patients just like me. Human contact helped me push forward; the conversations and hearing someone else’s story helped me every day. Talking to someone face-to-face was the best prescription for me.
I received my third kidney Transplant on April 8 2023.

I understand you never fought i got that part about you but for some making the change isn't easy so some resort to a Hollywood approach to life when they get out. I personally see no reason whatsoever to do that because im happy with life but for you to vent questions your real motivations. DJ Shipleys' closing questions in this documentary resonate with me. I've been dealing with alcoholism for the last 4 years (and acutely the last year and a half), and despite knowing/understanding the negatives of my addiction, it has been consistently hard for me to stop. I know that drinking is not making myself or my family better, and that it is making my relationships worse, but it is hard to stop.

My life has honestly changed for the better since this and other interviews with this man, and that is a first. Usually stories are stories, but his hit hard. And it got me training hard again. I was on a "break", but wtf do I need a break for??. Dude is wiser than many of those way beyond his years, you can tell he's seen and been though hell. Was lots of it self-inflicted off the battlefield? Maybe, but he's not the first SEAL i've heard speak that had that kind of mindset. Just go hard all the time, consequences aren't even a thought, it's all about you because your youth rips by, lots of pressure to achieve so much within it. His words are both inspiring and cautionary. If you see this DJ, thanks man.

DJ… Thank you brother!! You inspire me to be a better Man, Husband, Father. I was diagnosed with asthma at a young age, and was declined from Military service. Iv always felt that it was my purpose on this earth, to go and fight, but was never allowed to,because of the asthma. I struggled many years trying to find my place and purpose, so I’ve played football my whole life, and understand what it means when we say Team, it’s not just about I. Iv always looked for the comradery I experienced with football, and joining the military was what I needed, and was never allowed to join. So there are those of us that were never allowed to join, and had to suffer trying to find our way. Again thank you brother for everything you have givin this Country. I’m also sober now, but I’m missing warriors like yourself in my life, I need to be surrounded by people like you and don’t know where I can find them, I’m in Indiana

I ‘ve worked with a ex army soldier, that had a suffered a brain concussion from an explosion in Iraq, that he was released to see if he could learn a civilian job doing land surveying and he was able to pick it up, all I helped him with was setting up his resume to move to a better paying job where he calls the shots now!

Dj and Cole and there's a few others Shaun Ryan, that have are the ultimate warriors , and have bettered the country and people of the country in many ways ,and in todays society people and i myself needs to see that level accountability, sacrafice, responsibility, to not settle for mediocre, but push to try to be the best person possible and be better everyday than you were yesterday. Helps motivate me to get up and do something stop mediocre and strive to be better, I absolutely believe when others see that level of humbleness, because I understand it better it's not about going to the gym just to look better or always about self ,but it's about making the world around you better , and we can damn sure use alot of that , not letting the team down whatever your team might be always strive to make it better.

Pretty moving story, thanks for sharing and thanks for serving so I have the freedom to safely sit here in middle American and watch your story. I really love what you said about depression and wanting to be alone. I don't have any issues, if I wake up unhappy, I can just stop and tell myself, smile and be happy then go about my day and I am happy. People suffering depression lack that ability. I have a 15 year old daughter who knows she has 0 reason to be depressed, but she is, and I am totally going to tell her next time, yeah I know you would rather sit here in your bedroom alone with the door closed, but that's what you always do, time to get out and go do something. Old Army Frogman here.... We fail to realize that the emotional wounds of 20 years of war are fatal just like a traumatic amputation. You would never ask someone who just lost a leg and an arm to call and talk if that wound was too bad. No, you rush into the kill zone and save the life. The same applies here. You have to be ready to get on that plane, fly to your Brother and save his life. In my humble opinion, pointing out this deadly dynamic is likely the bravest thing you have done. DOL, RLTW.

God doesn't exist. Giving credit to your imaginary friend robs the effort and sacrifices of your fellow man. If you survive a catastrophic event. It's likely because stangers have dedicated thier lives to becoming a doctor nurse firefighter, or emt who saved you. What's funny is that God is never mentioned in the negative. Like during the Indonesia tsunami there were dumbasses who were saying it was God's will that they survived. If that is true then God is to blame for the deaths of everyone else. Motherfuckers in jail always find Jesus then check his at the gate when they leave. If he's there for the good he was there for the bad. Or he doesn't exist

You are one hell of a person DJ... I am now watching this video twice in a row and I want to say thank you for your service... Both then and now! You and the other persons of the armed forces made/make this freedom we have today a reality that we here stateside take quite for granted. I thank you for your sharing of your story to us all. I wanted to say that I have never seen the sacrifice that you and others have made for us all to live the life we live in this free country.... your words have an impact and what you speak is quite amazing to make others like myself, want to self-reflect and realize that we do not put in that 100% everyday, but reach inside for excuses to why we can't vs. why we can. You and your brothers' stories and words are amazing to put into a perspective of what sacrifice has been given and forsaken, and just hope you know how inspiring the words you speak in this interview are!! Much love to you and yours!!!
