Blackened - Acoustic Metallica Cover

- UPDATE, July 29th 2024. You, yes you, the listener. You are amazing. This video was created almost 8 years ago and has been up on this particular channel for almost 5. For reasons completely beyond my understanding this cover version has proven to be incredibly popular in the last month or so. The views have quadrupled, the comments have been unfailingly positive and yeah, I don't know what else to say except THANK YOU to everyone who's taken the time to listen/Jeff
Re-up from 2016.
Blackened was the very first acoustic cover in the Big Four series. I came up with the idea in early 2016, and originally wanted to do the entire song and include every single guitar part; riffs, harmonies, solos etc. I soon realised that because of the slower tempo, recording the entire song would've meant the recording would be about 9 minutes long. Even at 6 minutes it goes on a bit too long, but yeah, I cut parts out and condensed the arrangement to something more approachable.
Of course there's no way I could've played Kirk's solos anyway so cutting them was a no brainer.
Blackened is a powerful, well written song. It was pretty neat to hear Metallica's own, acoustic take on it, because parts of that version sounded a bit similar to my arrangement. Plus it's always absolutely hilarious when Metallica try to swing.
Disclaimer: UA-cam has unilaterally decided to occasionally show ads before my videos even though 1) my channel isn't monetized or even eligible for monetization and 2) these cover versions have not been flagged for copyright which means songwriters and/or publishers don't make any money from the ads either. I strongly disapprove even though UA-cam and Google have every right to do this.
Surely James had seen this cover first and got him thinking
Haha, now there’s a thought 😁 Thanks for checking it out!
It sounds exactly as if Ghost made a ballad version of Blackened. The vocals give me strong Tobias Forge vibes. Truly amazing!
Thanks @DrawMan321, and yes, Tobias Forge was a big influence when I was doing these covers back in 2016 and I still love the first Ghost album to bits. I've since covered RItual from that album but that's in more synthpop style.
Jesus Jeff, it seems MetallicA did a cover of your version! Great job bro
Thanks so much, that comment made my week and it's only Monday!!!
This is haunting
Thanks! That is what I kind tried to achieve with this version.
That algorithm is doing you justice bro! This song is fire...making covers like this, you should have millions of subs....
Thanks so much!
Wow, it sounds like it's taken from Opeth's "Damnation" album. Congratulations!
Thanks! Opeth was a big inspiration when I was making these cover versions.
Awesome rendition! Love this take on Blackened. Such a awesome arrangement even Metallica themselves have taken this route for the acoustic rendition of this song.
Thank you!!!
Absolutely incredible!
Thank you so much!
Wonderful reimagining of this classic tune 👏👏👏
Thanks again, both for giving this version a listen and for taking the time to comment.
absolute gem, congratulations and thank you for the effort!
Thank you so much for listening!
beautifully haunting. this is wonderful!!!!! never would have thought this would sound good but its absolutely beautiful
Thanks! The playing and singing are a bit wobbly but this is still probably the cover version I'm most proud of.
You 'blackened' the song even more! Amazing! 🔥
Thanks for your incredible compliment! I definitely wanted to retain the dark atmosphere of the original.
4:31 is so beautiful
Thank you 🙏🏼
Agree… awesome interpretation of this classic!
Cheers and big thanks!
@@JeffVicario You don't happen to have tabs/tuning//a tutorial on that part? Would love to learn it!
@@samsepi0l143 I did a whole video of how I played my version of Blackened, including the section you mentioned, but it's not visible on the channel. I can make it public if you want to watch it :)
This should have more views. Really interesting re-working.
Thank you for listening! I recorded that 4 years ago and it turned out well enough that I recorded like 50 more cover versions over the following 1,5 years :)
If you mix pink floyd with metallica you get this!
That's a very accurate description, and thanks very much for listening!
Bullshit, this is pure acoustic Opeth, circa Deliverance/Damnation era
This is also entirely correct @themountain3461, all matters of taste being subjective 😊 And also because I am a massive Opeth fan and Mikael Åkerfeldt has been a major influence on my playing. Especially the Lopez-era albums.
@@JeffVicario taste being subjective is of course true, as in "do I like this music, is it good or bad"
I'm just not hearing anything remotely resembling Pink Floyd in this haunting arrangement
That’s fair. I love Pink Floyd and it’s one of the bands that are most often mentioned when people comment on my original songs. So perhaps that’s why I’m not surprised if someone might hear Floyd in this version as well.
Thank you for this
You are most welcome, and thank YOU for listening!
I'd buy a whole album of this! Brilliant cover! ❤
Thanks so much @taoteg1941 I have covered Harvester of Sorrow and more recently Dyers Eve from AJFA, plus around 20 other Metallica songs, mainly from the first three albums.
man this hits my soul
Thanks so much for listening. It's a powerful song and I' so glad you found something to enjoy in my version as well.
The vocals sound very Opeth now! Awesome
Thanks so much for listening!
Jeff Vicario my pleasure, you ever seen Opeth live?
Sorry for delay in answering. Yes, I have, the latest show I went to was in January 2020 :)
@@JeffVicario I have too! 😁
this sould have more views, nice cover man!!
Darkai 1 Thanks! It’s originally from August 2016 and was up on my other, since deleted, channel where it got slightly more views 😁I have a whole playlist of Big Four covers in a similar style if you’re interested.
So mysterious
Yeah I wanted to really emphasize the underlying mood of the song, the slightly mystical anger tinged with sadness or vice versa :)
Nice! The main theme almost sounds like Blackened melded with Moth Into Flame.
Ha, you’re right, I can hear that. Kinda cool, especially considering this version was recorded in early 2016 before Hardwired was released.
awesome version bud... two thumbs up buddy👍👍
Thank @gomartgo very kind of you :)
If this isn’t James it sounds identical. This is the best thing I’ve heard in a long long time.
It’s at least as good as the original. Thank you 👏👏
Thanks @orbitaljellyfish808, what a nice thing to say. The original is untouchable, obviously, but I think I managed to shed a little light on how great the songwriting is. And I will say I was slightly amused when Blackened 2020 was released, and not just because of the spike in my version's stats :)
@@JeffVicario agreed; this version lets the composition *shine* ;)
You Sir, are a genius.
I most certainly am not, but thank you for saying that anyway :)
Where can one purchase and download your Metallica covers? I don't see them on your Bandcamp.
Good question! My cover versions inhabit a grey area when it comes to copyright. They have not been flagged for copyright violations and in most cases aren't even subject to Content ID claims. However, it is my understanding that Bandcamp explicitly forbids uploading cover versions even as free downloads unless you have cleared the cover version with whomever controls the publishing/owns the copyright.
I have not cleared any of my cover versions so I cannot offer audio versions of them on Bandcamp, or on any streaming services for that matter. I'm not exactly sure why UA-cam allows them but if and when they disallow it, I'll have to take them all down.
I suspect ad revenue is a big part of why UA-cam/Google are so lax about copyright. As far as I know none of the money from ads on my channel reaches the songwriters or publishing rights holders, it all goes to UA-cam. I certainly don't earn anything from my channel as it's not eligible for monetization nor will it ever be. It would be morally corrupt for me to make money from something I didn't create. But that's a separate discussion :)
@@JeffVicario This makes sense. Too bad! Thank you for the detailed response!
Is there a way that you could share the tabs or partiture of this?
I wish there was, but I literally have nothing written down about any of these versions, I'm sorry to say. I did record a video attempting to explain how I play Blackened a while ago but I'm afraid watching that would pretty much be a waste of your time as the sound quality is pretty bad and my performance is even worse.
Dark acoustic cover and one of the most beautiful!!!! Great play!! Tuning?
Hey @antonisgaratsidis8161, thanks for listening! My version is in regular A440 tuning, just like the original version. Well, perhaps not 100% exactly in tune but certainly just E A D G B E :)
Really nice !
Thanks @brutalrock927! I appreciate you taking the time to listen :)
This is how Metallica came up with the 2020 version of blacked
I am 100 % sure they had no idea this version existed, but I will say I was amused when I heard their 2020 version because there are some some similarities in the way they play some of the riffs as arpeggios :) Thank you for listening!
Great job!
Thanks for listening, it is much appreciated!
This is sooo awesome , very well done ;)
Thanks @cujo-fu5bm much appreciated! :)
@@JeffVicario My Pleasure ;)
This is pretty rad. 😀
Thanks so much for listening!
brilliant
Thank you 🤩🙏🏼🤩
that voice, it sounds just like James.
I don’t think I sound anything like him, a D grade pale imitation on a good day at best 😅 But many, many thanks for listening!
If he had a little more of an English accent he sound like David Bowie
I usually do my Bowie imitation on my original songs 😁
better than blackened2020
Thanks for listening 😊🙏🏼😊
Opeth vibes
Definitely! Opeth was a major influence on my acoustic cover versions. Thanks for checking it out!
Opeth vibeees
Yes, Opeth was a big influence when I was working on this version :)
Time traveler???!!
That’s me 🤩🤩🤩
BLACKENED,and other assorted lullabys by Metallica.
Pretty scary lullabies, maybe not Slayer level, but still :) Many thanks for listening and for for your comment!
❤sounds like SImon and G.
Whoa, that was unexpected, what a compliment. Thank you so much!
Opethish touch!
Well spotted! I specifically attempted to create slightly dissonant sounding arpeggios from the original riffs and Opeth was a constant reference point; Damnation for sure but also riffs in heavier songs like Master's Apprentices, The Moor, Leper Affinity etc. where they're played against open strings in weird ways.
@@JeffVicario way to go boss! Keep on!
This Is really heavy \|_|
Thanks so much for taking the time to listen!
This belongs on Sirius XM- corridors of covers
Thanks for checking it out 😁 I’m constantly amazed that people keep listening to these covers from ages ago.
Opeth?
A major influnce on me so yes, not surprised if you hear some Åkerfeldtisms there :)
acoustic with classic guitar
Yes!
It is worthy
Cheers!
If Simon and Garfunkel worshipped Satan😂
Excellent description :D
I thought they did...
😂😂😂
Pink floyd 😮😊❤❤❤
Thank you for listening!
Wöyh!!
Lokki lokki minne lennät 😁
Metallica sent me
Tell them I said ”Hi!” 😀😀😀
Sounds like a Ghost song
Yeah my vocal range is similar to Tobias Forge’s and sure love early Ghost, not so much the arena rock version 😁
😮 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 🙏✌️
Thanks for listening!
Ooooft
I choose to read this as a compliment :) If it's not, that's totally fine and than you for listening!
Blackened AF
I tried to keep it true to the spirit of the original. Thanks for listening!
@@JeffVicario nice you respected the classical guitar playing as well.
