This folk song is sang by Wannes Van De Velde and is not a very old song. Even though it was published in 1969, it is still a good song that represents the struggle of the Flemish dialect in Belgium. Some refrences are: Germans talking about the "krieg", basically meaning the world wars and Belgians trying to speak "ABN", wich is basically a short way of saying "General Civilised Dutch". The song also mentions the following cities/ places:
Zepperen, Gent, Heverlee, Schoten and Londerzeel. The second map used in the video is a map of the Duchy or "Hertogdom" of Brabant. Brabant was a medieval duchy that encompassed land from Brussels to S'hertogenbosch, and is also the duchy I named my channel after. I added it to represent the lands inhabited by "Brabanders".

The singer is called Wannes Van de Velde and past away in 2008. He was famous for singing in the dialect of Antwerp.

@@salsaproductions5859 Bijna volledig correct. 'verstojje' is een samenvoeging van 'versta je', dus die 2e 'je' mag weg.'Neig' is een synoniem voor 'erg' in dit geval. Voor de rest helemaal goed.

First time I listened it just because song sounds good, later I decided to watch video some times to understand what is it about (thanks for English translation). And idea of the song unexpectedly is so close to me. I'm Ukrainian, from Mykolaiv - regional center in south of Ukraine. My father told me that when he was young, Ukrainian language here was considered to be "language of stupid peasants", so many people, who are Ukrainians, spoke russian. Now most people consider it shameful to speak russian, even many ethnic russians speak Ukrainian.
Long live Flanders and its native language!

Flemish people who understand their own dialect are usually well versed in any Dutch dialect. Because it takes extra effort to understand the dialects of the various provinces. People from Holland for instance are very poor at understanding even their own dialects, because they don't take that extra bit of effort. So they will usually just speak English, traitors!

@@historian211_ he´s just being pedantic, historically that would have been correct but the Antwerp dialect considered Flemish in modern times. (1830 onwards)

flemish sounds like what a finnish person would expect dutch to sound like solely by reading it.
Technically this is Brabantian. He sings in the dialect of Antwerpen, which is Brabantian.

"t'trekt op gjin kloten" does not actually mean "it makes no sense"
it means " it is unbecoming" (or litterally translated it looks like a ballsack (double negation is something we lost nowadays but it is implied here))
id rather say that it means that it looks or sounds like crap

Double negation isn't lost in East Flanders at least.
"trekt op geen kloten" is more accurately translated as "sounds like shit" than "doesn't make any sense". The message isn't that people think Flemish is hard to understand, they just think it sounds like shit.
"Doesn't sound like no balls"? Wat is"trekt" in zo'n context? (vraag ik als Nederlander)
@@castheeuwes1085 Het is een beetje hetzelfde als "slaagt op niets". Vlamingen zeggen vaak "slaagt op niets" ook als "trekt op niks". Ik weet niet goed waarom het woord "trekken" daar wordt gebruikt, maar zo is het nu eenmaal.
@@emielio1917 Zou het "ik trek het niet meer" ook uit die hoek komen? Een vreemd gebruik van een werkwoord, gebruikt om de situatie als onmogelijk of onwenselijk af te doen. Dat komt wel in de buurt van wat de Brabander hier van het Vlaams vind.
Kloten (singular Kloot) can either mean testicles or a sod of grass. Such is the Dutch language, few words mean many things... hadn't heard this expression before but this guy's explanation makes sense.

@@s_vb2220 Dit lied is geschreven voor een Vlaams publiek in het Nederlands. Hoeveel Walen kennen dit nummer? Dit behoort tot nu eenmaal tot de Vlaamse cultuur.
Je kunt niet twee verschillende volkeren en hun cultuur onder één artificiële verzamelnaam brengen enkel en alleen omdat ze in één dezelfde rechtstaat leven. Identiteit is meer dan landelijke grenzen en overheden.
