    Paul or John once said that back when they was playing with Pete, Ringo sat down at the drum kit for fun one day and when they started playing together, he felt that this was "it", there was something complete about it.
    I feel sorry for Pete.

      He does. Adam Lawrence, the actor playing as Pete Best, really did convinced me that he was Pete! I can hear and see him in the movie, and when he was playing the drums, getting the new look as the boys, or even briefly shaking hands with Ringo, I was having that expression to where Pete had to go as soon as 1962 approached. *(The kind to where it felt like; "No matter how many times you tell him to improve, he still won't listen. Pete has to go!".)*

    Ringo was a better drummer, but it’s also about image. Pete had more of a quiet, sexy rock and roll vibe. When they all got the mop top haircuts, Pete stayed with the greaser look. Ringo was more flexible, light hearted, and brought a personality they needed as a group. It was a calculated decision. It needed to happen in order for the band to go where they wanted to commercially. The Beatles image during the early phase of their success was just as vital to the world falling in love with them as their music was

Ringo getting replaced by session players has nothing to do with the image of the group from a marketing perspective. Pete had a big following with live audiences from Liverpool and Hamburg. Brian Epstein and George Martin knew in order to get maximum exposure from tv and press, they had to be clean, non threatening, and fit together like a 4 way jigsaw puzzle. I was actually mad that Pete's so-called "fans" wanted to punch Ringo in the face but George took it instead. You just have to accept change.
      Ringo did nothing wrong with being the new drummer, he was able to do the things Pete couldn't do: He played the drums ever since he was little while in the hospital, he plays amazing in both performing and recording, and can sing while playing the drums at the same time. And don't get me started on how he knows when to play during their Shea Stadium concert.

      Care yo disagree - listen to the Deca Audution tapes and you can hear Pete was a mediocre drummer at best, which is clearly evident in how he has a tendency to rush things. Ringo, not being a technically gifted drummer, had the ability to play on time but also was incredibily giften in recognizing what makes a song good. Just listen to the opening fill on Come Together or Ticket to Ride. Sorry, but Pete was the rotten apple and needed to go.

      The Decca Tapes are a hard listen. While Pete probably could have gotten better with more mileage; technically, with early 60's recording techniques he wouldn't cut it. There's been lots of drummers in his situation: they're great LIVE drummers but they're not good STUDIO drummers. In the studio, time (& tape) is money. The less money spent making a record means more money made on the sales of the record. That's exactly why here in America, we had studio bands like The Wrecking Crew, The Funk Brothers, Booker T & the MG's....Bread and Steam.

    • @mikebradt8080
      @mikebradt8080 Місяць тому

      @@That_AMC_Guy Stan Lynch from the heartbreakers is a good example of that. Petty has said he is great live drummer, great energy. But in the studio he wasn't as strong. Personally, I have always enjoyed studio sound as opposed to live. You can really dial it in. Then again you have someone like Prince that is incredible live both in technique and style.

    Studio recording was extremely demanding and expensive, unlike live playing, every minute flaw in timing, strumming and singing is exposed for all to hear. If you listen to the early Best demos with the Beatles it's easy to understand why he was removed. Why do you think studio musicians like "the wrecking crew" were so dominant in pop records recordings. Of course now it's all correctable by computer tools but then it was raw talent with very few ways to cover mistakes.

    Unfortunately they didn’t have the balls to tell Pete directly to his face. Regardless of their reasons for doing so they let Brian do the dirty work. And when Ringo’s name comes up Pete suddenly realised they have plotting to get rid of him for some time. I think Brian should have got them all in a room together and tried to sort it all out. And if they were adamant about sacking Pete then Brian should have found a way to minimise damage to Pete’s reputation. He should have sat down with the press alongside Pete and said he had decided to take Pete out of the Beatles and build a group around him. And Pete would have said “yeah I don’t like leaving the band but this is too good an opportunity to pass up.” And there would have been no demonstrations from the fans. And no damage done to Pete’s career. It was the first big crisis Brian Epstein faced managing the Beatles. And he handled it pretty badly.

      I feel bad for Pete Best. And personally, I believe John, Paul, George should have told him themselves. Brian, I believe, just followed their wish to fire Pete.
      We are all easy judges. But I also think, I am not the only person who can say of herself: What the "lads" did to Pete was not a great shot, however, there were moments in my life, too, when I sacked people, lovers, friends in a very like bad manner. And other people, lovers, friends have sacked me too in situations that I do not wish to recall.
      The Fab Four - in contrast - without knowing ahead of time changed music history.
      And for Pete Best, it just feels bad.
      If you want to dig even deeper - did John turn out to be a happy guy, in the end? Did George?
      And is it Karma?
      I bet this goes too far.

      @@mitgift167 In retrospect you could argue the whole thing was a case of a lack of maturity. We tend to forget how young the Beatles were in 1962. They were barely out of their teens really. And just a bunch of kids having to deal with all of these decisions. When George Martin decided to use a hired drummer on Love me do. They took that as the deciding factor to get rid of him. Rather than wait for him to get another chance from Martin to drum on the next single. They got rid of him pretty quickly. Perhaps if they had been a bit older and wiser they wouldn’t have been so hasty. But you are right we do things in our lives that are not very nice to other people. And only in retrospect do we realise how thoughtless that was.

    This film quite rightly tells a fundamental truths that have been ignored. Epstein was ' the adult in the room' and Best was a very good looking and talented guy that became a casualty of the bands path to success. This is why the actors chosen to play the other Beatles are deliberately ' lame' ; the story is about Brian and the business acumen that created the phenomenon. The version of lennon here, is how business people and the establishment would percieve him : a cheeky chappy. Thats all. The final version of lennon in 1980 was haggard, pale thin and ' levelled up'. The magic of the 60s made them look superhuman, but the real superhero was Epstein and Martin and later, Lyndsay Hogg , Dick James and the Apple Corp.

    I feel the film is a bit fantastical ; drummers get fired all the time. No one knew back then how big the group was going to become. They could just as well have bombed. So this is a retrospective look back based on their enormous success later on , so the scene is disingenuous. Sure , Pete was probably pissed at being replaced , but he had no way pf knowing the future , nether did Brian.

    When George said they needed a new drummer it was misconstrued as replacing Pete but all George meant was hiring a session drummer for the recordings. This is standard practice. The real reason Best was fired was because the label and Epstein didn't want the drummer of the Beatles to have been born in India (which he was, in Madras, as was his mother, in Delhi). They needed them all born in England. Nobody will ever admit it - but that was the reason. They needed them to be squeaky-clean, all hometown England boys, with zero controversy or complicated pasts. India had just been liberated from British control only 15 years earlier and things were still very sensitive. It would have made headlines right away that the drummer was born in India. And in the early '60's, for what they were about to market, that wouldn't do. There have been several interviews with people around them at the time who strongly hint that was the real reason. If you listen to those early records - there was nothing wrong with his drumming at all. The real reason the Beatles didn't fire him themselves was because they didn't want him fired. They were simply told: we can't have your drummer having been born in India. All of this is incredibly ironic, of course, considering how much the group was later identified with India just a few years later when the counterculture embraced it. But that's the real story you'll never see in a movie.

    • @YouKnowMyNameLUTN
      @YouKnowMyNameLUTN 2 місяці тому +15

      That's the real story in a world where everything is directed based on what hurts you.
      Reality is, he drummed in the first recording session of Love Me Do when they could've easily asked Ringo as they've already had him fill in for Pete for The Beatles. George Martin immediately saw that and how couldn't he? This is a man who's classically oriented with music, not with rock and roll.
      He saw that Pete Best's playing was quite limited, he spent 2 years as the drummer of The Beatles performing thousands of times and unlike Harrison, McCartney, and Lennon, he didn't improve nor did he find a style that's his. If you look at the Anthology album, he holds the beat and doesn't add any flavour, he maintains it.
      Ringo on the other hand brought a feel and technique that drove the music forward. Unlike Pete Best, he managed to sophisticate his style in two years, just look at the drum track on Ticket To Ride,
      Your comment is quite possibly the most absurd thing I've ever read. The fact they're from Liverpool was more mindblowing than being from India. At the very least people in London or across the US even knew what India is; nobody heard of Liverpool or cared much about it at all. Ravi Shankar was highly reputed before The Beatles even was a band.
      The only real story is that you need your trousers back on.
