Work looked great. I think some clients don't understand what's involved. You're a craftsman and they don't understand that it's you're work, you finished it the way you saw it should be. Nothing is more permanent than concrete. If they don't like what you did, then they can hire someone else next time. I think sometimes clients think just because you are working for them and that means that they can get exactly what they want. This is not how it works.

I’ve worked concrete for years and am also a carpenter. This is top notch work, she’s fortunate to have this work gracing her property! I have encountered customers over my many years in the trade of more than 40 years and I am convinced that there are some people who want the best but will still do anything to get out of paying for it. The days are gone where the customer is considered “always right”. Without hesitation I can positively say that this customer hasn’t got a clue about the job and is trying to escape payment!

It could be that she regrets the style. I don't like it either, but I also wouldn't have picked that stamp because its the style that I don't like. I prefer stampings that look like bricks. The stamp in the video looks like old worn concrete to me. It also will have flat slippery spots due to smoothing over the pattern.

When she decided to move the borders you should have CHARGED her. (Make note in your contract that when changes occur so will charges). That patio came out flawless, and I'd bet she knows it.

    • @murraystewartj

More than that, have a clause in the contract that explicitly deals with mid-job change orders and have the customer sign off that change and the additional charges. Just keeping your own notes means nothing should it come to court. If the contract is in writing then any changes need to in writing. CYA on everything.

@@LegendLengthThe problem with these customers is that they are never satisfied cause they have the priority of exercising control over the professional, rather than the priority of getting a quality product/service that you can provide. Most times, it's not worth the hassle, stress, infuriation, and additional time required to meet a standard that doesn't exist. And in some cases, this same people are difficult to shake off: they show up later on and give you bad reviews for good work and demand you to fix finished work that doesn't need to be fixed, or work that needs to be fixed because you followed their umeducated instructions.

@@stevennguyen4993 The problem is you are lumping regular people in with the annoying customers, they are different.
Tradies get mad when they are told what to do because normally they have free reign. And so *any* customer that merely specifies a design is treated as an annoying customer.
In other fields it's different, like software where it's very formal that the customer always specifies things, even if they are bad choices by them or annoying. You just charge more.

I don't know why this popped up in my recommendations, but I enjoyed it. My dad did concrete and flagstone work in the 90s. I'd help him on some jobs as a kid and teen. The concrete slabs we poured were very basic compared to what you guys did here. All we did were basic joints and end-to-end broom texturing, even for patios. I really like the esthetics and functionality of the stamping. The same goes for the way you placed the joints. The broom-textured border was also a necessary and pleasing touch. This patio is an art piece. I'd be very happy with it. If anything, I'd want the stamping to be more pronounced, as pronounced as possible without causing furniture to wobble too much. That's just me, though. Everyone is different.

I did concrete for years . Before becoming a union pipefitter welder . And you had a great crew on this job. You are 100 percent correct about the joint down the middle. All concrete cracks . Joints are a control joint to force the crack in that location. And you're right again about a light broom finish being for safety. The whole job looked absolutely beautiful. And yes, I would have loved to have a slab like that at my house. What I didn't like when I was a finisher was a salt finish. Concrete to me looks so beautiful with a stamp and light brush . But with salt finish, it looks like a bunch of little sand traps. Great job, sir . Much respect.

I recently retired as a Supt. for a Commercial General contractor for 33 years. Have finished and been around a lot of concrete. Finished product looked very nice. The joint cutting down the middle absolutely necessary. Without as you said it would crack with no control and would wander. The joint will still most likely crack there but the joint will control it's path and conceal it. I've had clients that you just couldn't satisfy. I feel you on the extra work making changes with no appreciation or even a "Thank You". Diminishes motivation and incentive to want to give the client a premium job when they are unruly difficult. Won't talk about gender other than to say a man wouldn't care as much IMHO. I feel your slump was correct for the intense detail required after placement. Manpower was sufficient for jointing/stamping. Nice consistent brooming also. The only advice maybe that might have helped some is the use of mock-ups. That way you have what you need to produce onsite. I realize it is time, effort and money however the size of the job may benefit you and the client. One thing that I learned over the years is a client will only remember the bad jobs. You can knock it out of the park 100 out of 99. The one that got away is what they remember. Go figure. Great job and thanks for sharing.

It is all about having a plan drawing showing all proposed joints, drains, and color / texture locations and then having this drawing approved by client BEFORE starting the construction. A sample patch of texture and color that they can approve would also be helpful. My guess is the existence of your center joint would have been resolved at that time. It’s all about expectations.

A view from the UK. As a retired owner of a property maintenance company i sympathise completely. On a couple of occasions in my working career i have walked off jobs that the customer was, shall we say, unable to comprehend, the ramifications of their ongoing changes, what she/he was asking for. They seem to think that the work you have done that you had to tear down to encompass their latest "addition", they wouldn't have to pay for. The number of customers that EVEN told me how to do my job was unbelievable. The number of customers that made up their "vision" while the project was in build was legendary. I ended up getting everything and i mean everything they wanted in writing even additions explaining that there are cost implications and even then they tried, without success i might add, to not pay for what had already been done. Well done for the work you did here. You set a high bar, i hope you're busy. It'll do for me and i was in the business.

You guys should have discussed the joints and finishes of the various slabs partitions so there weren’t any surprises and get it jotted on paper.
