I had no idea of the depth of the relationship between John Stockton and Karl Malone. Karl's eloquence and honesty about his long time friend is at once both moving and uplifting. Well done Karl Malone.
As a Houstonian I grew up as a Rockets fan during Olajuwon era, but the second team I respected the most is the Stockton/Malone’s Jazz team. I really wish they had won a championship. They were such a great team. I love John’s humility and hard work ethic.
When I first met John Stockton at a local college game where he was cheering for his nephew playing against the Lewis Clark State Warriors I knew him as a 2nd cousin once removed that everyone in my family had previously met before me. I introduced myself and told him who my mom was whom he met a few times before. He then told me that aside from being my 2nd cousin once removed that he knew my Dad's sister and her husband who would visit his mom and Dad in spokane one week every summer as he was growing up and until the day she (my dad's sister) passed. He also told me that his grandmother and my grandmother from my mom's side were good friends growing up and he actually knew more about me and my family than I did about him outside of basketball. Such a cool and down to earth guy and I'm blown away that had I never met him He would have known who I was by name anyway. He is still very connected to many other closely related people I grew up with. Very small town down to earth kind of guy who is as humble and approachable as anyone I've ever met. He still sees and keeps tabs on people from both sides of my immediate family in Spokane volunteering for the local food bank and running basketball camps for kids and of course Spokane's (his current home and childhood home is in Spokane) annual 3 on 3 tournament each year and asks about me and my family when seeing our other mutual relatives there. Again, such an amazing and humble guy. Blows my mind. Also, His parents owned "Jack and Dan's Tavern" in Spokane valley from 1961 until 2006 when Jack retired. Still the best place to watch a Gonzaga game or Jazz game where you'll likely run into friends and family of John Stockton if not John himself, if you ever get the chance to visit.
Greatest ever. Us utah jazz fans are so lucky to have had like 19 years of best point guard ever, most assists and steals, and best power forward ever, 2nd all time scoring. A black kid from the south, and a white kid from the northwest happened to team up in the middle. Salt lake city, utah. They represented us, tried for us. We loved them and they loved us. That's why they have statues outside our arena, and why we named the streets that intersect our arena are named after them.
Bob Cousy, Pat Riley, Walt "Clyde" Frazier, Calvin Murphy, Earvin "magic" Johnson, Kenny Smith, Isaiah Thomas, Jason Kidd, and Steve Nash. Stockton never had to talk about himself. But look at the people who respect him and speak in reverence about him and for him. A very beautiful thing.
John Stockton forever. I studied in Utah just because l loved The Jazz so much. Love from Japan. Btw after all years Karls English is hard for me to get. 😆 not used to the southern.
Completely silly... he went by Jordan using his left hand... watch all the videos and not a silly compilation of cherry-picking by that guy, needing to make nonsense up to garner views.
Yeah he's #1 in assists and steals but my favorite stat is that he played every game of the season in 17 years of his 19 year career. That's unheard of
He had microfracture knee surgery at 35 just 6 weeks before the season started. This surgery ended the careers of so many great athletes, like Terrell Davis, Penny Hardaway, Chris Webber etc. He missed the first 18 games of that season, then played every single game for the next 6 years before retiring. The dude is literally Wolverine.
Reality is there r only 5 stats that matter in basketball Points , Assists , Rebounds , Steals , Blocks ...JS is number 1 in 2 of them in NBA history and no one in our lifetime will ever beat that.
"I can't give them all I can because John won't be there..." probably the best way to describe how John Stockton affected the Jazz whenever he was on the floor.
Yep. I mean, him and Hornacek were in a friggin minivan 🤣 I don't doubt that he has him a decent house, a nice car & truck, and a very nice retirement fund to spoil the HELL out of his grandkids 🙏❤️
Really good interview here with John Stockton who rarely does them. The interview starts at the 6:01 mark. John discusses his short shorts (6:16), the 97-98 season (7:33), dream team (10:56), his durability (9:40), Chris webber remarks on toughness (12:08), karl malone (14:40), missed shot vs. Bulls (16:48), Tim Donaghy scandal (21:50), a retirement that caught some off guard (28:38). podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a-one-of-a-kind-nba-legend-john-stockton/id1561863076?i=1000532187183
Isiah Thomas and John Stockton had a great relationship.John saw Isiah play at a tournament while they were in H.S.John was AMAZED at how good Isiah was and realized he had a long way to go if he was gonna be a top level player. The respect continued all the way to Isiah walking John up to the stage for his HOF induction. The person you choose to walk you up is a HUGE honor. That alone tells you what John thinks of Isiah and John probably knows he owes alot to Isiah making him the player he was just from the 1st time he watched Isiah play.
Grew up in Chicagoland and was a teen for the best years of our lives as basketball fans - with our Bulls. Have to say, the only times i really thought we might lose in the playoffs was Reggie's Pacers and the Stockton-Malone Jazz. Despite all we'd seen of MJ and how tenacious he was in the finals, that Jazz team really had us doubting ... especially that second appearance. Really respected that team.
@Stephen Forfer Goodrich was good player but we talking about the goat . Stockton averaged 13 points per gm However he didnt start till he was 25 so all them mins lost plus he played till he was 41 so played 5 years beyond his prime so if he was a starter from rookie and retired at 38 his average wudda been around 18-20 plus 50% shooting I rather Stockton shooting 50% 15 points than Iverson getting 35 points on 40% shooting Stockton is not the goat because he never won a ring but he remains the greatest basketball player ive ever seen
@footbali guess u were not that big of a basketball fan lol . U ever see lebron or Jordan...or how many other players that would crush Stockton 1 on 1
What ppl don't realize. To be the all time leader in steals you also have to THINK like a PG on the defensive end.You look at the passing angles the passer has and determine his options and anticipate where the ball is going so you're thinking one step of the passer and receiver.
yeah there is no doubt i had not ever seen someone gaurd and anticipate the passing lanes as good as JS. I used to tell people ..he didnt gaurd his man really ..he gaurded the entire opposing team.
I'm a number #32 man to my core, but #12 is the GOAT at his position. Stock is that cat who nobody wanted on thier team, but shred you alive and take his kid's out for ice cream after the fact. #12 hands down.
To be fair magic had james worthy and Kareem. Stockton had malone and hornacek but when the Jazz were best they had to play the bulls. Magic had to go through the celtics. Stockton magic kidd and isiah r the best imo
We can say Magic is the best PG of all time, but he was a freak of nature at 6'9" able to look over defenders.PURE PGs ( 6'4" and under/ pass first) Stockton slightly over Isiah ( because he was more offensive minded). But you have Oscar, JKidd( PURE),Gary Payton, Bob Cousy, Tiny Archibald ( forgotten),Mark Price, Walt Frazier and the MOST UNDERRATED PG OF ALL TIME Maurice Cheeks.
Tenacity, humility, and class. Players like him and David Robinson come to mind as role models to be lifted up. God had to make John Stockton a bit shorter and a bit lighter to keep things fair on the court.
I think yall are missing the deeper picture here .. Listening to John and Karl speak about thier connection ..even before they were together in Utah .. i realize that they had what is called a soul bond. They were soul brothers.
I really wish Karl Malone was a better father. He was such a great player and seems so personable. It just tarnishes his legacy and his kids childhoods.
I always rooted for John.Number one he was humble, always professional,in shape, played hard, played smart.Along with Maurice Cheeks ( SO UNDERRATED) are my 2 favorite PGs.
I feel like John would've been one of those great military officers that was drafted as a teacher to WW2. Kinda like Tom Hanks on Saving Private Ryan but more real life like the hundreds & thousands that did it for real and the many that were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
If Stockton had a fault as a basketball player, it was probably that he was a bit too unselfish. I remember in the finals against the Bulls and MJ, Stockton was taking over, wasn't missing a shot, and then he started passing to his teammates and it wound up costing them the game. I believe that they would of had a good chance of beating the Bulls, if Stockton had been looking to score more. Watch the games and judge for yourself. And the one year that they were in the finals, after Barkley had nearly broken Johns back, it was about 4 games into the finals before he was back in shape and playing like his old self.
Yes thats true . I started seeing that in about 1993 and it increased after that. Sometimes he should have continued scoring himself. (..and the Jazz fg% would have been even better o.o eventhough they normally lead the league in % already) That can be a hard line to define sometimes ..no matter the player.
They are one of the top Duels of long time and then I can think of Michael I can think of Western Barrel on I can think the Pick 3 in Boston Paris and mikal as far as been together a long time I really can't think about you more than you know
As quiet a person as there ever was in professional sport. Quieter even, when it was time to stand up and say, "I don't deserve this spot over the reigning back2back Champion; Isaiah Thomas. "
Stockton and isaiah thomas are the best point guards in the history of basketball not only in nba. Stockton defines as a pure point guard. Thomas a point guard and a scorer.
No it is Dick Bavetta's fault. He waived off Eisley 3 pointer in game 6 of 97-98 finals and let in Harper's 2 pointer . And did not give offensive foul against MJ when he pushed off Byron Russel.
I was today years old when I found out there was a documentary on John Stockton. Thank you for this.
Jeff hornacek is so fine!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
#Stocktonisalegend he's so underrated and I miss the Stockton days! 😢😢

Stock, Malone, Barkley deserved it.
Houston were something else altogether at the time, Robert Horry, Olajawon, Sam Cassel, whoop, the names just kept coming...
I'm from Frienfswood/Pearland and I can relate to being a Rockets fan. John Stockton hit that 3 in front of Barkeley, maaaaaan.
When I first met John Stockton at a local college game where he was cheering for his nephew playing against the Lewis Clark State Warriors I knew him as a 2nd cousin once removed that everyone in my family had previously met before me. And almost 20k points... goat
I was so happy when Stockton hit that jumper. When I watch it now I get teary eyed. Damn I’m getting old. The Jazz always punched above their weight.
They can never be another John Stockton in this today basketball generation again.
There's too many cocky, soft thugs today.
One of the best point guards who knew the position and made the sport worth watching!!!
John Stockton forever. I studied in Utah just because l loved The Jazz so much.
Love from Japan. Btw after all years Karls English is hard for me to get. 😆 not used to the southern.
I always watch these when they pop up on my UA-cam. I get all weepy because I was a utah kid in the 80s and 90s.
Loved that backcourt. Hornacek was no slouch. And the 2 in combination was like a demonstration in basketball skills and floor IQ...
Hornacek was one of the best catch and shoot players of the 90s.
He was the reason why I had to have no.12 on my jersey when I was in my highschool ball team.
John is so fucking fine!!! He is so fucking cute!!!!

Wilt said if he was starting a team he would start with Stockton
Fucking right he said that
Ive seen the video of Wilt saying it its on UA-cam
Because Russell had Cousy and much success.I guess Wilt figured if I had the same type of PG, I would have the same team accolades as Russell
