I bought a front row seat for my bday at the famous Ryman Auditorium this past February and all I wanted was to hear Susan sing Angel>Sugaree and I got my wish. I’ll never forget it. ❤️ Susan, Derek and the amazing Band! Can’t wait to see you again. I’ll be at your first show regardless of where or when.
That's the privilege of living in Europe where they're less famous. They were hanging at the merch stand after their show and they're indeed two of the sweetest artists I've ever met. Derek even gave me his bottleneck when I told him that I started to play slide guitar because of him. One of the best shows of my life :-) Thanks for your video!
They were my last show before covid hit. Seeing Derek live is something else, but seeing how he drirects that monster of a band using the most subtle of body language and music cues was probably the most impressive thing I've ever seen. It's so good.
I’ve watched this Tedeschi Trucks tune over and over and over...so powerful. I don’t “know” music, just feel it, so your tutorial helps me appreciate what I’m feeling while watching it.
And...That's the good stuff! I can't think of a guitar player who wouldn't be overshadowed by Derek, but she is an incredible player in her own right and obviously an apex singer. The cohesiveness of this band is stunning. Also, I must say, that was the best flute solo I've ever heard. LoL
Susan's voice just keeps getting better and better. It's great to watch. Derek is a musician's musician and he is so keyed on Susan for dynamic changes and just super supportive of her musically speaking. As you say attentive. Attentiveness is about the best trait in a musician.
TTB performing “Angel From Montgomery/Sugaree” is the BEST thing I have EVER seen on UA-cam!!! Nice to know someone else is as big a fan of this amazing band of musicians.
I was truly blessed to have seen this very band with the flautist, Kofi Burbage, on a few occasions. Such a beautiful young man taken from us far to soon. Very nice breakdown, brother. It is much appreciated.
Thanks so much for yet another amazing REACT video, Michael. And Susan Tedeschi...wow. Absolutely incredible. What a musician, performer, singer, guitarist...everything.
I decided that I'm going to sign up for your lessons, as a Christmas gift from my wife. I've been playing about twelve years and know the most important basic things about keys and the proper chord, knowing how to embellish just a little bit. Your playing style is superb, and I want to learn as much from you as possible. Keep doing this, please!!
Absolutely the best band in the land these days! Seen em several times and they NEVER disappoint, so powerful are they and so TOGETHER, each having the others’ musical backs! Thanks for doing this one Michael it is one of my faves. ✌️
This is the first “reaction video” I’ve ever watched, and I didn’t have high hopes, I just clicked because I love TTB and I know Susan kills Angel of Montgomery. But it really brought me a lot of joy to see how moved you were. You looked as if you were close to tearing up. That’s the power of music! I love that. I’ve been fortunate to see them many times. Then I watched your video of Midnight in Harlem. I share your reverence for Derek Trucks. You really know your music theory. I wish I had stuck with an instrument instead of wanting to play everything. Anyway, you are the kind of person I’d love to spend time with. I’ll be checking out more videos, I’m sure. Thanks!
I feel the the same way. I was always hesitant to watch "reaction videos" but this is truly special seeing a brother get 'that gleam in his eye' and, as fellow Deadheads who seen them many many times, witness the magic in the reaction he has. Plus Sugaree, that's always been my song ever since I got on the bus long ago...it's a very special old tune and every time I hear it, I feel like I'm hearing it for the first time over and over.
Totally agree man! I came across Mike and had the exact same reaction - Mike's passion and knowledge and enjoyment of the raw emotion of a piece is just great. I agree Derek is possibly the best guitarist right now and I've seen him since he was 13 playing with BB King and Susan is so talented she sends shivers down my spine when she sings!
I'm glad we agree about the essence in this band. I followed their Swamp Family shows all through the Spring and Summer. Beautiful, all of it. Such emotion.
I booked tickets for Susan tedeschi boch Wang theater Friday oct 4 Boston balcony seats I'm so in love with her bluesy rock music God Almighty hell of an amazing artist and I'm gonna melt in my shoes I'm crying listening to angel Montgomery God bless you my friend
I just recently saw TTB in Red Bank, NJ in March of this year. completely, totally blown away. one of the comments below on how Derek directs the band with the slightest of movements, nods, turns, etc. He broke a string on stage, one of the roadies brought out another guitar but Derek had him bring a string. Derek had the keyboad player take on a solo while he changed his guitar string right on stage and the band just kept on playing a very complex rythym. crazy. Susan's voice is so far past 4 dimensions hearing her live will make you cry if you have a heartbeat. just looking at other tour dates now. Beacon theater NY in OCT!
Saw them this past weekend at the Chicago theater, she walked out on crutches because she tore her meniscus dancing at the green mill the night before and she ripped it! Your story about her being sick reminded me. Also they covered angels from Montgomery that night.
Mattson (backup singer you mentioned) was the lead singer for the Derek Trucks Band prior to the bands merging and he has co-written some of their songs.
There are two bands, in my opinion , that are the greatest on this planet at this moment. TTB and Snarky Puppy. Both bands contains musicians that play in favour of the band (besides the fact that they are individually outstanding musicians). It’s absolutely a joy to listen to them.
Michael...glad I ran into the post. I have been drawn to the Tedeschi Trucks band for many years, and for obvious reason. I love how you break down the entire song, on behalf of the band. You're refreshing to watch and to pick up on maybe the "not so obvious" things in music" keep up the great content...Much appreciated!
RIP Kofi! You are sorely missed, my friend! Big part of the soul of the Derek Trucks Band and TTB. They were the last band I saw live before the lockdown as well. With so many moving parts, it would be easy for that to turn into a muddy mess, but they handle it so well! I would probably agree with best live band around now (or Widespread Panic!). Always fun to see how bands react to adversity, because they all have it! Jerry was famous for flubbing lyrics, I saw Greggory flub more than one verse too, JB, hell no telling where he's going sometimes, but they never fall off of that tightrope! I saw Susan open for the ABB sometime in the late 90s, maybe 2000, and had never heard of her. Well, I certainly left that show knowing who she is!
Yes, Kofi was so talented and it was a major blow when he passed and will forever be missed. They are, IMHO, the best band around and as you described so tight and professional. I saw the same tour back then and discovered Susan myself and she blew me away! When ABB reformed after DB they were back to playing great shows with Derek and Warren on guitar and Oteil on bass. Those Beacon Theater runs were are real joy to see!
I came here from that fabulous rehearsal video of Them with Taj Mahal and Leaving Trunk and everything you said about them is spot on. Even in their rehearsals its a must watch. All of this reminds me of good days when I was young.
Palmisano: watch how attentive Derek is to Susan. Derek: I was so attentive I didn’t even take the stage. Lol....I’m playing, Michael. I’ve been to so many shows I get them mixed up sometimes too. Love your reactions, keep em’ coming. RIP Kofi❤️✌🏼

Their version from Austin posted here on UA-cam I have watched over a thousand times. The part where Derek finally comes back on stage for Sugaree gives me shivers every.single.time. TTB is an absolutely brilliant band.
This is the version that should have made an appearance here. It's so good. The way she looks at him as he just spreads his wings and takes off is the stuff of real, bonafide true love.
TTB is without a doubt the best live band around these days. Every member is a badass playing their instrument and each vocalist could front their own bands. As for the "space" when they play, they do what all great musicians do - they listen to what is being played. It's such a simple concept yet many players can't seem to grasp it. I never thought I'd hear power coming from the stage after The Brothers called it quits but TTB thankfully proved me wrong! As for them getting no airplay or so many people being unaware of them - they're too damn good and the masses settle for way less.
The first time I heard Susan singing I realised I will never be the kind of singer or musician I want to be because she exists! Angel/sugaree was the first song I heard her sing
First time I seen Derek Truck was in 2001 at the Beacon with Butch Trucks, as well Blues Traveler. Always a big Allman brothers fan( and i think they always play the best shows at the Beacon NYC, as i seen them over10 times, 6 times @ Beacon)big Warren Haynes, but after that show Derek became my guitar hero. What an amazing show. Here this young kid is playing with one of the best and oldest jam bands still rocking at what age 20 21yrs when I seen him. Just wow.
Surgaree - turned my Wife into a Jerry fan 30 or so years ago. A fourteen minute live Jerry Garcia Band boot legged off the radio. I think there is a BW video out there... great song great version... Love it! Probably my favorite Dead tune. Thanks for the video.
Excellent breakdown of probably my most favourite band of the moment. Its clear we have very similar tastes. Great stuff Michael; Your videos, as well as being super informative are an absolute joy to watch.
I saw Susan Tedeschi live waaaay back in 1999 when she was touring her Just Can't Burn album. I have always loved her music and tone. Thank you for breaking this down! In fact, that show was what made me buy a guitar at the age of 30 and try to learn something on it. Been playing ever since.
Michael.....first...i don't play music...I'm a listener..as I watch your expressions I listen just like that hearing all that is going on as it's going on ... I need to learn how to play befor I die ... wish I tried sooner ...pushing 65 ....love what you do
Dude I fucking love you I saw Derek and the band a few years ago at the blues festival in Australia and Derek played with a broken finger!!!! The gig was so sick!!! Best band!!!
I just came across this video Michael. I completely share your enthusiasm for TTB. You articulated some of the exact same thoughts/feelings which I have, but have struggled to put into words myself. I hear some of that same magic in your playing/teaching too!
Michael so cool to see your channel really taking off. I love your insights. TTBand is really special and I can't get enough. I just love the rich layers of all the arrangements. Masterful! (also welcome to FL- just in time for a hurricane)
Call it what you want, but music like this is prayer. It reaches out and opens us up. It is an honor to the universe and the universe feels it and we get to see and feel that moment of floating, transcendental bliss.
Saw this band in a smallish theater in San Diego a few years ago. Killer horn section, dynamite rhythm section. Trucks slide was explosive and sublime. But Susan Tesdeschi OMG she’s the angel. Sounds like Bonnie Raitt and plays a mean Strat. Unforgettable show.
I watched this video twice. Oh man, this is such a great version of Angel... I grew up with the Bonnie Raitt version--thanks to my older sister's record collection--which I adored through my teens and 20's... and this... awesome...loving the flute. I love how you describe the ROOM that they're creating. I totally get it. Thanks Michael :) :) And I agree with you about them being the best band in the land :) I got chills when it went into Sugaree...it's such a beautiful version. I've been an avid Dead fan for 38 years. I've had a chronic illness for quite a few years and haven't been able to see many concerts in the last 15 yrs. Thank you for describing what it felt like to be in that community of Dead fans when they played Sugaree. You brought it home for me--I can really feel what it must have been like--the reverence. :) BTW, for someone who wasn't a Deadhead in the day, you have a really great love and appreciation for their music now :) :)
One point of order. As a drummer, we call that snare sound in Sugaree crossstick.. A rimshot is when hit the head and the rim at the same time which makes a sound that is a mixture of the two sounds. Also, I swear there was a little Jethro Tull playsinging right at the end of that flute solo.
I have seen these folks twice live and Susan knocked it out of the park both times. Seems like she doesn't have many bad nights. Also the only flute solo I've ever enjoyed in my life so far. Thanks for posting this Michael. Hopefully you'll somehow get to meet them.
You used the term space, I was thinking the same thing without knowing how to phrase it. It's impressive when a well oiled machine is put together, each knowing their role of serving each other, not getting in each others way, ego's checked at the door serving the greater good. Helps when you have such a killer song.
Perfect comments on the band. 12 or whatever pieces and yet more 'space' than I get left in my 5-piece band... This masterpiece of a song is also right up there with 'Pancho and Lefty' and 'Don't Think Twice' as one of the best songs ever written.
So,BB King said he was the best and in my humble opinion, I agree. Lucky enough to meet him a couple of times years ago before he was so well known. One time in a little club with about 25 people in it, and he was the nicest, most humble guy. He remembered me and sat at my table a year or 2 later and I asked him if he was ever gonna play with the Alman brothers and he said yes, as a matter of fact, the next tour, and the rest, as they say is history!
This is my favourite track from Susan. A fantastic band, no doubt, and Derek is no slouch. But if you believe this is the best; you need to listen to more music !
Kofi definitely left us too soon. He was the unsung hero of that band for so long.
I can’t watch these videos without getting a little emotional about him. I feel privileged that I got to see him live a handful of times.

No fight from me. 100% the best band in the land!!!! And RIP Kofi.
Sugaree is the Dead song I "love to hate," but this version makes me realize it's a pretty damn good song!
Thanks Michael :) :) And I agree with you about them being the best band in the land :)
I got chills when it went into Sugaree...it's such a beautiful version.
Love your reaction and most of all as a intermediate guitar player i Love your talent on guitar. Underated for sure. Thanks Michael.
Love them.
Angel From Montgomery is hands down my favorite song of all time!
I have seen these folks twice live and Susan knocked it out of the park both times. Seems like she doesn't have many bad nights. Also the only flute solo I've ever enjoyed in my life so far. Thanks for posting this Michael. Hopefully you'll somehow get to meet them.
My last show was ttb at the ryman in February right before the shutdown. I think it was the fourth time seeing them. Great live band! So much talent.
You used the term space, I was thinking the same thing without knowing how to phrase it. It's impressive when a well oiled machine is put together, each knowing their role of serving each other, not getting in each others way, ego's checked at the door serving the greater good. Helps when you have such a killer song.
I've seen them twice. They are the best in the land
I clicked like as soon as i heard/saw your hendrixy trill right at the beginning.
Thank you. You get it
Dave Matthews Central Park two step keyboard solo, holy shit man! You gotta review it, that performance made me respect them as a jam band
I've watched that video many times, so so good. Good job micheal
I got to see Tedeschi Trucks live and it was amazing.
Me too .)
Thank you
Perfect comments on the band.
I'm going to see Susan tedeschi boch Wang theater Friday oct 4 Boston I'm looking forward to seeing her Im a huge fan
This is my favourite track from Susan. A fantastic band, no doubt, and Derek is no slouch.
But if you believe this is the best; you need to listen to more music !
Simply as good as it gets!!!
you couldn't be more right. thanks for the awesome video.
