    A Bill Kreutzmann quote from Wikipedia:
    "Jerry brought "Row Jimmy" into us one day, and it was really difficult to get a grip on it at first. It has a slow tempo, which makes it seem like it would be easy, but it calls for a slight reggae groove layered over a ballad. Rhythmically, the lengths aren't traditional. They're not just twos and fours. It's deceiving. Basically, you have to play the song in half-time with a double-time bounce on top. It's trickier than it sounds. But once I locked into it, "Row Jimmy" became one of the best songs in our repertoire."

      That's what turns me off about a lot of jam bands. But the dead were drawing from blues, country, folk, jazz, reggea, etc. and took songwriting seriously with timeless lyricism. They're improvisations are more of a group mind jazz approach rather than purely groove based.

    • @justinofhudson
      @justinofhudson 4 роки тому +1

      When Phish was at their best they weren’t lyrically focused. Which for a lot of us was perfect because we are\were sick of shallow formulaic love songs. Hairy hood is one of the prettiest songs I ve ever heard and it’s about a billboard, which is totally fine for me. Robert Hunter is one of the best Lyricists ever IMO but his lyrics are just pretty poems or VERY simple folk songs without Jerry’s music. Music is the most important part and Both Grateful Dead and Phish are incredible at music. Also it’s not 1995 there are tons of “Jam “bands with “serious” lyrics, it honestly ridiculous to say that.

    It is so good to hear someone unpack the music I have loved for 50 years. I guess someone has already told you, but he played slide a lot around the mid 1970s. Hear The New RIders of the Purple Sage first album. A fairly pedestrian band lifted into the stratosphere by his playing. You explain the edge he lived on and probably why he died. Lovely stuff.

    I gotta say your emotion and enthusiasm for Jerry and the Dead bring tears to my eyes. Most of my life people have given me flack for loving their music. The description of your inability to know where Jerry is going to go really helps gel why I love this music so much. The depths of sound, rhythm and harmony between the band is so sweet when they are on. Add some incredible Robert Hunter lyrics and presto. I like how you are going to break down the entire Cornell show. Another epic show to break down would be from 7-19-89 on you tube known as “down hill from here” The sound quality, the mix and the song selection are top notch. Thanks again for your channel and can’t wait to hear more Cornell

    I've come to realize part of the reason I love Jerry's solos so much is because it does have the feeling of on the edge. Like when a toddler runs with their head forward and you're just expecting them to fall on their face but it never happens. Best evidence of the seat of the pants thing is the solo on the album version of Crazy Fingers. You can her him slide in and out of bum notes cause he's just playing by feel.

    I was there. Beautiful sunny weekend, hiking in the gorges of Ithaca. Mother's Day 1977 concert. Drove from Chicago. All my college friends showed up from around the country (Cornell Class '73). and my brother. Didn't know any of them were going there (pre-email and cell phones). Barton Hall only held a few thousand. Amazing time capped by that Dew! And as we left, it sure was snowing. I drove west back to Chicago, so was out of the snow in a hour or so. My friends driving back to Boston drove in the snow all the way. They let a soundboard tape freely circulate which launched thousands of Deadheads. And then the original tape went missing. Found and reacquired by the band prior to the 40th anniversary of the show. Restored and released for the anniversary on the recording you now hearing.

    This is the brilliance of the Dead. To someone "unlearned" never could a band sound so lost yey know exactly where they were. Jerrys Brilliance was his "noodling" would build to the most unbelieveable peaks. Crescendos building and cascading at the same time. And he knew exactly where he was going. And Michael, youve discovered Bobby and Phils brilliance. Bobby, the master chordsman with the most intricately simple rhythms and Phil the most studied of all of them. And dont count out the drums. Mickey and Bill doing 2 "completely different things yet completely in sync with all those things perceived as "out of sync". It was always an adventure seeing them live. You never knew where you were going. You were just along for a beautiful peaceful ride.

    FANTASTIC! Cornell 77 is way up the list, for sure! I'm looking very much forward to this series! The reason the sound is so good is because this is a "Betty Board" recording coming straight from the board at the show, as mixed by Betty Cantor-Jackson. I'm pretty sure The Dead have finally gotten control of all of the known Betty Boards. Heads, correct me if I'm wrong on that point. So much of what you hear out there is taper stuff, and while still great, and all we have of some shows, Betty Boards are the best I've ever heard! Betty put Bobby and Phil high in the mix, and it makes for fine stuff! I've been on the bus since 69, but the main thing is you found the bus, and there's always room! Such timeless music! I love a good, slow rolling, Row Jimmy! You're going to really enjoy Cornell 77! While not on Cornell, I think you would really have a ball with a rousing "The Eleven" live, this one from Fillmore West in 69! Talk about being out there on the ledge! This beauty is a tightwire walk from start to finish! Just a nice easy 11/8 time signature......no problem! Phil is an absolute BEAST on this version and Jerry just leaves you shaking your head....... ua-cam.com/video/36oYArpSkms/v-deo.html

    Thanks, you managed to rekindle my enjoyment of this tune after years of mostly skipping it. This version is great.
    I appreciate your appreciation of Donna. Yes, she was pitchy and skrieky at times. But when she was on and the band was on, she was a key element to some of the SEMINAL versions of their best tunes. It is such a hackneyed, meatheaded blowhard cliche to constantly bitch about her.
    Keith was my favorite dead keyboard player. So subtle, such touch, such harmonies, such a generous musician. Blended with Jerry so beautifully.
    This is not the greatest dead show ever, but it is truly fucking great.

    At 29:10 to 29:40 and from 28:30 also, I’ve been saying this about Jerry to no one who understands it for years. So well said. He was so good at playing specific to the chord changes of the song while weaving his phrases and melodies around and only giving your ears what they expect half the time, but always giving them what you didn’t know they really wanted in the end.
