I Tried Intuitive Eating For 7 Days...

- This week I ditched the food scale and the diet mentality and adopted an intuitive eating approach! With intuitive eating, you don't count your calories. Instead, you listen to your internal hunger and fullness cues to dictate your eating habits.
I take you throughout my week vlog style and show you what I eat in a week. As well as teach you more about intuitive eating and tips to be successful at it!
Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching :)

Made my day 😂 thank you for that one!!
The eating disorder struggle is real. Congratulations on progressively healing your relationship with food. I'm getting there too, and allowing myself to enjoy food without the guilt, but with balance. One day we'll get it right bud.
Yeah I hope so I was doing very well but these last weeks it’s been awful where I eat something bad and I just can’t stop and the next day I’m like okay new day let’s eat well but end it fucking it up and I don’t know how to get help.
You're not alone
@@theglyph1795 make sure u actually like the foods in your diet because if u truly like them u won’t have insane urges to eat junk all the time
@@theglyph1795 in other words be honest with urself and make Changes when necessary for yourself
@@theglyph1795 you have bad days and weeks. It comes with the territory. I've been learning not to limit myself too much and f.e. I eat something good every day. Usually it's a couple of small marsmallows or a Snickers protein bar that I might sneak it in my diet early in the day (chop it up and have it on my morning porridge) or have one before I take a nap after I come home from work.
One thing I noticed has helped me most is taking a long nap in the afternoon. I don't sleep enough during the night so I've gotten into a habit of trying to banish fatigue with sugar. Now I just sleep more, which means I have more energy, I have waaaay less food cravings and I eat three home cooked meals daily as I have the energy to meal prep and I also move more.
And as Will said, if you eat something unhealthy it doesn't mean the end of the world and that the rest of your life is ruined because of it. It happens. You can always bounce back. Just don't blame and hate yourself for it as that will set you up for failure.
Therapy and seeing a nutritional coach is a good way to get your new and improved life started. There's always a core reason to these kinds of problems and they are usually relatively easy to solve in the end.

After having been told to finish my food for 18 years by my parents it has been difficult to learn to stop when I'm full. Many times that's around when I've finished a little over half of my portion. I'm slowly getting the hang of it. Next stop: intuitive eating.
@@BagznBirdz It's a good thing to tell your kids when they are still growing in height though.
@@Sirvalian I think it's better to tell them to take a small break (have a chat about their day while you're at it) and then tell them to eat more if they're not full. We did have our problems with one of the kids leaving most of his food and then going for the rice krispies 15 mins later. This was fixed easily, as if he didn't eat enough he would have to leave his plate at the table and return to it when he was hungry again. Magically the food started to interest him again immediately. But we never forced him to eat.
@@Sirvalian no its not something you should tell them, forcing your kids to eat isn't okay. not everyone needs the same portion sizes and some days they aren't as hungry. you should instead teach them to not eat past being full, teaches them that it's okay to not finish meals and they learn how much they actually want when making their own plates.
I tracked calories and macros for almost 2 years. I got tired of being MyFitnessPal's slave and I stopped doing so almost 3 months ago. I still weight "critical" things like carbs or peanut butter and so on, but I no longer have a food diary.
I think those 2 years counting led me to an "eye" scale so I usually pour the adequate portion size just by intuition.
I don't have any "snacks" of processed foods (cookies, packets, Ice Creams etc) and I try to go with "real" food as much as I can.
I've never felt better.
Yeah
Dude I can just eyeball some ingredients and make a meal and I can tell the calories in it within 10%
You're saying you're eyeballing food except "carbs or peanutbutter" (which I take to mean fats in general). I mean, that's just tracking still. Not bad, but not exactly like intuitive eating. You can track what a healthy meal's calories are by just taking its source of carbs (like pasta, rice) and its source of fats (butter, olive oil, peanutbutter), and then maybe add 150-300 for the protein and the miscellaneous. You shouldn't be entering glasses of water, baby carrots and cucumbers into your food tracker, you should just try to ballpark those vegetable type foods imo, which can't add up to much more than 250 calories a day.
So I was 240 I stopped eating sugar drinking sodas ect.. lost like 55lbs I'm 175 now but still a little chubby so I started counting macros for just a couple weeks now.. problem is it seems to have hurt my health more than help.. I was feeling the best shape of my life just eating good food but when I started adding in the extra protein and looking at macros.. I've been kinda groggy and gassey some days too
Same here. I am having health conditions due to low body fat and I had some signs of anorexia. I deleted all of the calorie-tracking apps on my phone and started intuitive eating. Of course, I have gained some weight. But the weight gain stopped at a certain point. You can live a healthy lifestyle without tracking calories.
“Anti diet doesn’t mean anti healthy” is so true! my mom is a registered dietician that leans on the side of intuitive eating - she never told us to stop eating or to eat when we were not hungry, but we rarely ate or have unhealthy foods in our house(they were reserved for “special occasions”).

This is seriously the best video I've ever watched about intuitive eating! Love that you talked about how it's not for someone inexperienced 👍
@No Body She means you have to have an idea about what calories look like and also with knowing the difference between mental hunger and physical hunger. Without those things you’re just setting yourself up for disaster
The original comment I responded to was deleted but I’ll leave my response up because it’s still important
Disagree. I have no background in tracking calories or macros. I watched this video and was like: ‘people weigh peanut butter?’. I eat peanut butter pretty much everyday, as much as I like.
I learned about intuitive eating from Abbey Sharpe’s videos. Intuitive eating is eating what you like and healing your relationship with food. My weight is healthy 👍
Yess
Hey Will, this will probably get lost in the abundance of comments BUT
I’m really proud of you for trying intuitive eating. As a person who has dealt with an eating disorder myself, I know that it’s SO hard to feel as if you’re losing control of the amount you’re eating. Tracking calories is the alleged safety net that you’ve established for yourself. Because it seems to work so well for your balanced eating after the ED you’re gonna fear that nothing else will “work”. But in my opinion tracking calories and avoiding family dinners due to macro imbalance is still slightly ed-ish. So it’s a tremendously brave step to let go of that automated behavior for a whole week.
Even though it might not seem as a super big thing for people who have never really struggled with that, I can tell you it really gives “people like us” a hefty peak in anxiety when it comes to letting go.
Lots of love from Germany you big little skittle (don’t know why I said that but I wanted to say something funny at the end. Whoops, didn’t work out. Just like me )
Yea but he doesn't have an ed, he's just into fitness
@@sierrahovde7611 He has multiple videos about having anorexia/ an ed in the past.
"But in my opinion tracking calories and avoiding family dinners due to macro imbalance is still slightly ed-ish".
It's kind of rude and dangerous to call other people's eating habits ED-ish even if it is just your opinion. Some people who have struggled with an ED in the past would never want to see a comment like that and they could really obsess over it and spiral. These things aren't inherently bad just like intuitive eating isn't inherently good. Will has found what works for him and it's tracking his macros. You don't have to like it or agree with it, but it's still rude to compare that behaviour to that of an ED.

@@IsaacMorgan98 He is coming from a genuine place. Eating meals with family and friends create bonds, and missing out on bonding affects relationships. But I understand that you probably think that Will is trying to divide YT work and family time
Same, but I feel like we should look at body types like his for what it is - athletic and not very "day to day normal healthy" if you know what I mean. If your goal is to just lose weight, live healthy and so on, I'm sure you don't need to weigh and count every god damn thing. I think this "rational" relationship with food can be very dangerous to some people, especially when they went from fat/chubby to fit, there's always some type of trauma or unresolved issue. Our ancestors didn't need to weigh and count their food, so technically we don't need to either.
What is wrong with you? Lol
@@totallyanonymousbish9599 our food is just a little bit different from our ancestors food XD like i just recently got a bit educated about food and nutrition and i didnt know a croissant has the calories of a whole meal. Relation really is defined as how one thing relates to another. So I don't get why this Greg dude says you can't have one with food.
Poor food relationship usually leads to Eating disorders which isn't good.

I’ve been eating intuitively throughout losing weight consistently during the last year and here is one of my biggest takeaways: Whenever I eat something, I eat until I’m mostly full…I give myself at least 30 minutes of a buffer to determine if I’m still hungry or not…sometimes, my brain doesn’t tell me I’m truly full until it’s too late and I’ve already overeaten…so, I try to be patient with myself and give a little time for my brain to catch up…sometimes I am truly full and I stop eating…other times I’m still really hungry so I have another serving/a snack to fill me up…I’m sure this might sound so simple to some ppl, but I have struggled with overeating since childhood…this was a big breakthrough for me 😊
you should intuitive eat for another week and track your macros etc. (without trying to meet them consciously). would be interesting to see how close or how far you are to what your nutrition goals are

I track 6 days a week and give myself a day to not track and eat what I want on Saturdays. Which is Shabbat..aka the Lords day where you are supposed to feast, eat and be happy and not to any work. So I enjoy the day and it helps tremendously with mindset. It's important not to be a glutton though and binge...literally just a day to take a break. So I guess you can say intuitively eat. It's so helpful. 💯
This is so cool. I do exactly the same thing but Sunday for the same reason. It's a day of rest to eat, drink, spend time with family friends and hobbies.

Haha! That's awesome!
@The Reckoning lol
@The Reckoning truer words have never been spoken! 😂
Intuitive eating to me means paying attention to how you feel with the food you consume. Over time I've changed my diet and refined it to one which allows me to feel really good all the time. I feel fresh and full of energy. What we crave is also different from what we need. The microbiome in our guts has a major role in what foods seem appetizing. Based upon what you eat consistently is what types of bacteria will inhabit your body. Overtime, eating foods that lead to health and well-being will cultivate a microbiome that demands these foods. At this point intuitive eating becomes really easy because all you crave is what really benefits you.
I know this is an older video. But I tracked for 3.5 years religiously and it became more of an unhealthy relationship with food. I discovered intuitive, and feel a lot better in my skin with what I eat when I make the right choices. But definitely learning about nutrition for the 3.5 years helped! Love your videos.

A relationship is just the way two things are connected. Like there's a relationship between the moon and tides or animal behaviour and the seasons. Food is a big part of our lives and it's important to beware of the role it plays and how much it's benefitting/harming us.

This is how I eat. If you switch from dieting to intuitive eating, you will go overboard and binge at first (lots of pizza, cake, chocolate, fries, chips), but overtime you'll find a good balance. I experienced that binge because I was depriving myself for years but I feel so much better now. I mostly eat healthy but if I want a burger or a milkshake, then I'll go for it.

As I'm currently trying to lose weight and I'm tracking my calorie intake as well as macros, I learned so much from his channel and challenges he does are so entertaining to watch!
This channel has motivated me so much to get back to my workout-healthy eating routine after recent covid recovery, that I am again becoming a geek in this field. Nutrition is such an interesting topic and requires a lot of learning about your own body and mind, this is so interesting! Keep it going! 🙏
I’m noticing a lot of people in the comments who are uneducated about what intuitive eating actually is. If you’re in tune with your body’s cues, you don’t gain weight - significantly at least. Intuitive eating is what children do naturally, most adults have emotions attached to food, as well as minor or major disordered habits and mentalities when it comes to their nutrition.
To those in the comments saying they gained 100 lbs “intuitive eating”, it proves that you in fact were NOT intuitive eating. It’s very difficult to learn to listen to your body, and it’s the end goal of eating disorder recovery that is very difficult to get to because a lot of people have no idea what emotions and cues feel like in their body before automatically turning to food.
I highly recommend any of Evelyn Tribole’s books to anyone interested in learning more about this. Intuitive eating changed my life.
Ryenne Wilkes yesssss I agree
How do children NOT have emotions towards food? How many kids out there don't want to eat anything except candy and dino nuggets?
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
@@realstreetjesus1953 their palettes aren’t fully developed in that regard, but notice how kids naturally stop when they are full. A lot of us lose that ability somewhere along the way. For example, I grew up with my mom driving to a fast food restaurant after almost every explosive fight she had with my dad. Things like this are what teach our kids to reach for food as emotional solutions rather than satiating hunger.

I really liked this video, as someone who had an eating disorder and recovered via tracking I know how hard it is to not want to stop tracking for that sense of control. I love the message you spread in this video. keep up the great work!
I have gone back and literally watched every single one of your videos! I am obssessed with your videos(and your arms.) I don't follow any health/fitness channels but you make these very enjoyable to watch. Keep it up! :)
The only way I can lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way is without tracking my calories. So far I’ve lost almost 30 pounds without tracking one single calorie. This whole time I felt guilty for not tracking anything (and that I would eventually screw up, or my luck would run out). However, I just realized that this was a real thing! It’s important to still be aware with what you’re putting in your body! And like you said in the video, be careful when you’re hungry!
I recently found you this quarantine, and I can confidently say you probably are my favourite youtube atm. I’m not even big on fitness, but you’re so entertaining I still watch
My partner of 9 years is a Dietitian and LOVES mindful eating, and from what I've learnt (I'm a Personal trainer) ... It looks like you did a tremendous job for such a new and short attempt at it. Well done! Great content :)
My favorite video so far ! Always amazing content but this could help a tremendous amount of people 🙏🏼thanks Will
I’m so glad that you made this. I can see your anxiety building the further it goes and like that’s how I feel rn. I’m supposed to be recovering from covid at maintenance but I’ve been eating at a deficit and doing cico and macro tracking for months now to try to lose weight and the thought of intuitively eating is terrifying. I also used to suffer from anorexia so I’m worried I’ll binge then starve myself and relapse. It’s been 2 years since a relapse so I’m trying really hard not to. You’re an inspiration! Keep it up!
This is how I live my daily life, didn't know there was a name for this
Anush Gopalakrishnan well technically intuitive eating is eating moderately, but just knowing when your hungry and listening to your body.
Now if you just eat to get bloated that’s not intuitive eating, that’s just inhaling everything lmao
Wow, you are lucky! I do way too much emotional eating!💗
This was an amazing and informative video. I like how you truly took a non bias and open minded approach and also did your research on how to do it best before you started.
I was looking for the number of subscribers and couldnt find it and then I see these comments it honestly makes me upset because you really are so entertaining aswell as informative just please never stop you're amazing

I feel like this week was a turning point for Will and I am 100% here for it
would love a video on how you break your fast! There is so much out there on what you should and shouldn't break your fast with, like no fats and carbs together etc. What do you do? I recently have taken intermittent fasting up but find it hard to know the right way to break it. Loving your vids Will!
