  • This week I ditched the food scale and the diet mentality and adopted an intuitive eating approach! With intuitive eating, you don't count your calories. Instead, you listen to your internal hunger and fullness cues to dictate your eating habits.
I take you throughout my week vlog style and show you what I eat in a week. As well as teach you more about intuitive eating and tips to be successful at it!
Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching :)

@@theglyph1795 you have bad days and weeks. It comes with the territory. I've been learning not to limit myself too much and f.e. I eat something good every day. Usually it's a couple of small marsmallows or a Snickers protein bar that I might sneak it in my diet early in the day (chop it up and have it on my morning porridge) or have one before I take a nap after I come home from work.
One thing I noticed has helped me most is taking a long nap in the afternoon. I don't sleep enough during the night so I've gotten into a habit of trying to banish fatigue with sugar. Now I just sleep more, which means I have more energy, I have waaaay less food cravings and I eat three home cooked meals daily as I have the energy to meal prep and I also move more.
And as Will said, if you eat something unhealthy it doesn't mean the end of the world and that the rest of your life is ruined because of it. It happens. You can always bounce back. Just don't blame and hate yourself for it as that will set you up for failure.
Therapy and seeing a nutritional coach is a good way to get your new and improved life started. There's always a core reason to these kinds of problems and they are usually relatively easy to solve in the end.

After having been told to finish my food for 18 years by my parents it has been difficult to learn to stop when I'm full. Many times that's around when I've finished a little over half of my portion. I'm slowly getting the hang of it. Next stop: intuitive eating.

@@Sirvalian I think it's better to tell them to take a small break (have a chat about their day while you're at it) and then tell them to eat more if they're not full. We did have our problems with one of the kids leaving most of his food and then going for the rice krispies 15 mins later. This was fixed easily, as if he didn't eat enough he would have to leave his plate at the table and return to it when he was hungry again. Magically the food started to interest him again immediately. But we never forced him to eat.

I tracked calories and macros for almost 2 years. I got tired of being MyFitnessPal's slave and I stopped doing so almost 3 months ago. I still weight "critical" things like carbs or peanut butter and so on, but I no longer have a food diary.
I think those 2 years counting led me to an "eye" scale so I usually pour the adequate portion size just by intuition.
I don't have any "snacks" of processed foods (cookies, packets, Ice Creams etc) and I try to go with "real" food as much as I can.
    I've never felt better.

You're saying you're eyeballing food except "carbs or peanutbutter" (which I take to mean fats in general). I mean, that's just tracking still. Not bad, but not exactly like intuitive eating. You can track what a healthy meal's calories are by just taking its source of carbs (like pasta, rice) and its source of fats (butter, olive oil, peanutbutter), and then maybe add 150-300 for the protein and the miscellaneous. You shouldn't be entering glasses of water, baby carrots and cucumbers into your food tracker, you should just try to ballpark those vegetable type foods imo, which can't add up to much more than 250 calories a day.

Hey Will, this will probably get lost in the abundance of comments BUT
I’m really proud of you for trying intuitive eating. As a person who has dealt with an eating disorder myself, I know that it’s SO hard to feel as if you’re losing control of the amount you’re eating. Tracking calories is the alleged safety net that you’ve established for yourself. Because it seems to work so well for your balanced eating after the ED you’re gonna fear that nothing else will “work”. But in my opinion tracking calories and avoiding family dinners due to macro imbalance is still slightly ed-ish. So it’s a tremendously brave step to let go of that automated behavior for a whole week.
Even though it might not seem as a super big thing for people who have never really struggled with that, I can tell you it really gives “people like us” a hefty peak in anxiety when it comes to letting go.
Lots of love from Germany you big little skittle (don’t know why I said that but I wanted to say something funny at the end. Whoops, didn’t work out. Just like me )

It's kind of rude and dangerous to call other people's eating habits ED-ish even if it is just your opinion. Some people who have struggled with an ED in the past would never want to see a comment like that and they could really obsess over it and spiral. These things aren't inherently bad just like intuitive eating isn't inherently good. Will has found what works for him and it's tracking his macros. You don't have to like it or agree with it, but it's still rude to compare that behaviour to that of an ED.

Same, but I feel like we should look at body types like his for what it is - athletic and not very "day to day normal healthy" if you know what I mean. If your goal is to just lose weight, live healthy and so on, I'm sure you don't need to weigh and count every god damn thing. I think this "rational" relationship with food can be very dangerous to some people, especially when they went from fat/chubby to fit, there's always some type of trauma or unresolved issue. Our ancestors didn't need to weigh and count their food, so technically we don't need to either.

I’ve been eating intuitively throughout losing weight consistently during the last year and here is one of my biggest takeaways: Whenever I eat something, I eat until I’m mostly full…I give myself at least 30 minutes of a buffer to determine if I’m still hungry or not…sometimes, my brain doesn’t tell me I’m truly full until it’s too late and I’ve already overeaten…so, I try to be patient with myself and give a little time for my brain to catch up…sometimes I am truly full and I stop eating…other times I’m still really hungry so I have another serving/a snack to fill me up…I’m sure this might sound so simple to some ppl, but I have struggled with overeating since childhood…this was a big breakthrough for me 😊

Which is Shabbat..aka the Lords day where you are supposed to feast, eat and be happy and not to any work. So I enjoy the day and it helps tremendously with mindset. It's important not to be a glutton though and binge...literally just a day to take a break. So I guess you can say intuitively eat. It's so helpful. 💯

Intuitive eating to me means paying attention to how you feel with the food you consume. Over time I've changed my diet and refined it to one which allows me to feel really good all the time. I feel fresh and full of energy. What we crave is also different from what we need. The microbiome in our guts has a major role in what foods seem appetizing. Based upon what you eat consistently is what types of bacteria will inhabit your body. Overtime, eating foods that lead to health and well-being will cultivate a microbiome that demands these foods. At this point intuitive eating becomes really easy because all you crave is what really benefits you.

I’m noticing a lot of people in the comments who are uneducated about what intuitive eating actually is. If you’re in tune with your body’s cues, you don’t gain weight - significantly at least. Intuitive eating is what children do naturally, most adults have emotions attached to food, as well as minor or major disordered habits and mentalities when it comes to their nutrition.
To those in the comments saying they gained 100 lbs “intuitive eating”, it proves that you in fact were NOT intuitive eating. It’s very difficult to learn to listen to your body, and it’s the end goal of eating disorder recovery that is very difficult to get to because a lot of people have no idea what emotions and cues feel like in their body before automatically turning to food.
I highly recommend any of Evelyn Tribole’s books to anyone interested in learning more about this. Intuitive eating changed my life.

For example, I grew up with my mom driving to a fast food restaurant after almost every explosive fight she had with my dad. Things like this are what teach our kids to reach for food as emotional solutions rather than satiating hunger.

I recently found you this quarantine, and I can confidently say you probably are my favourite youtube atm. I’m not even big on fitness, but you’re so entertaining I still watch

My partner of 9 years is a Dietitian and LOVES mindful eating, and from what I've learnt (I'm a Personal trainer) ... It looks like you did a tremendous job for such a new and short attempt at it. Well done! Great content :)

I’m so glad that you made this. I can see your anxiety building the further it goes and like that’s how I feel rn. I’m supposed to be recovering from covid at maintenance but I’ve been eating at a deficit and doing cico and macro tracking for months now to try to lose weight and the thought of intuitively eating is terrifying. I also used to suffer from anorexia so I’m worried I’ll binge then starve myself and relapse. It’s been 2 years since a relapse so I’m trying really hard not to. You’re an inspiration! Keep it up!

Anush Gopalakrishnan well technically intuitive eating is eating moderately, but just knowing when your hungry and listening to your body.
Now if you just eat to get bloated that’s not intuitive eating, that’s just inhaling everything lmao

This was an amazing and informative video. I like how you truly took a non bias and open minded approach and also did your research on how to do it best before you started.

would love a video on how you break your fast! There is so much out there on what you should and shouldn't break your fast with, like no fats and carbs together etc. What do you do? I recently have taken intermittent fasting up but find it hard to know the right way to break it. Loving your vids Will!
