  • This short tutorial will help you learn how to scream like Bryan Garris from Knocked Loose!
    Practice plan:
    1. Unlocking and warming-up the falsetto - 0:02,
    2. Projecting it with anger - 0:17,
    3. Adding the distortion - 0:29,
    4. Final results - 0:40.

Do you want to learn how to Scream, Growl or sing with Distortion from scratch without destroying your voice and wasting time (and nerves) for an ineffective practice?
Or maybe you are already able to scream but you look for ways of taking your vocals to the next level, for example by learning new "tricks" and getting rid of unhealthy habits?
If the answer to any of those questions is "Yes", then check out the Complete Guide To Extreme Vocals - a course that will lead step-by-step you through the world of extreme vocal techniques like Fry Scream, False Chord Scream, Growl, Distortion, Gutturals, and more!
Beside the extreme vocals, you will also build a solid and healthy technical foundation so your voice would grow safe and faster - effective breathing technique and posture, dynamic breath support and properly set voice (opened throat, lack of unnecessary constrictions, good resonance).

It turned out that I learnt a similar style of screaming the same year as Knocked Loose was formed (2013). I didn't know it until one of my past students told me. I learnt this type of screaming because I couldn't do a decent fry scream or high false chord.

Here's a very old video with a similar type of scream I called the falsetto scream:

Would the distortion come from the false chords?

Bryan seems to use his arytenoid cartilages much more than me. I think he uses false cord distortion combined with the work of arytenoid cartilages (they create a very characteristic rattle).
When I scream that way, the sound feels like it was between fry and false cord distortion with a bit of arytenoid cartilages engagement.
The distortion I show before screaming is based on the false vocal folds and arytenoid cartilages engagement.

@@sibilaextremevocal Do you have a video on areytenoids, as well as a video on using both arytenoid and false cords?

Combining the distortion with the falsetto is very challenging. I feel my throat tightens in the falsetto making it challenging to produce the distortion on top. Can do either fine in isolation. Any tips? Thanks for the vid!

In such a case I would suggest to practice distortion and falsetto separately until you feel confident in both of these sounds, and then looking for a bridge between them.
Here's a vocal distortion tutorial. It's a method that usually helps my students:

@@crinji4808 Me too, it's easy and it low key sounds like shit in most songs because your range is so limited. I don't recommend it, but HungryLights (Justin from Tallah) has a good tutorial that did it for me.

It would be good to learn how to fry scream and add to it the false vocal folds engagement (some people call it a mixed drive or hybrid-scream). I cover this topic (and many more useful things) in my latest course:
