I wear my suit despite having very low reaction to bee stings, pain for only 30 seconds then nothing. The problem is, it doesn’t matter how many times you get stung, it only takes one for a anaphylactic reaction. I have know this to happen to bee keepers who had been stung so many times previously before.
It can happen to anyone, best to stay safe where you can.

A few months ago my 9 year old asked if we could get bees. My first reaction was to say no, but then!! I found your channel and some other inspiring keepers and now we’re taking a class and have ordered supplies to be ready for our first hive!! Thank you for the inspiration. We’re definitely ready to “learn something old!”

You should join her Facebook group. It is a great place to ask questions and not have to worry about being embarrassed or think that it is a silly question. There is so much to learn about the honey bees. Don't be afraid to ask or even join a bee group in your area. I am presently mentoring three different families who are wanting to get started or are just getting started. Good luck!

If you knew how many unprotected 'swarm catchers' I have had to deal with in my ER you would never, ever question your immensely sensible decision. Until we fully learn to speak Bee, we can only guess upon what a swarm is thinking! Well done today, a wonderful and calmly executed catch - as always. Just keep doing what you believe in and most of the time it will all be fine - and please, never lose that love you have found for your bees - after all, they make far more sense than humans ever will😊

Never apologize for wearing the level of protection YOU feel is necessary to be safe. Sometimes I can work bees in shorts and a T shirt and other times a full suit and gloves isn't enough. Keep "beeing" you and doing your thing.
As to casualties, it's important to remember that at the peak of the season, bees are hatching and dieing at a rate of 1000+ per day. Perspective is everything.

I always enjoyed hiving a swarm, I used a swarm box to catch mine in. Leave them over night and put them on a stand where they would live. I used a sheet placed in front of the hive and watch them walk in. Lovely to look at them after a week and see all that new wax. I always wore a suit, not worth the risk to open a hive and they turn waspey. I had to give my bees up as I reacted to the stings.

This year, they were small...younger. I just couldn't stay away. I've never kept bees so they moved on, but man..what a beautiful sight! And the buzz! I could hear it coming.

Hey Kaylee, I so love your videos, especially this one. I love how you show such great concern for the honey bees and how you lovingly make a home for them.
I am very old and still wear my gloves and at least put on a hat and veil. That is just me and I don't apologize for it and neither should you. If anything you should help others understand that it is okay what ever you do as long as you feel comfortable.
Suggestion: I was taught, don't remember by whom, that putting down a white bed sheet is the best way to get the bees to march into the hive body. I learned this technique back in the 70's when I first started bee keeping. Two things that I have learned about this method is one, it is more gentle on the bees to fall on the sheet with the grass under it. Two, if you tap on the side of the hive body it will attract the bees and they will go towards the sound and march into the box. Three, almost forgot this one, this also helps you to look for the queen or queens. The last swarm I caught, which was in my peach tree, I got a chair and sat down next to the box and watched for the queen. I didn't have my queen catcher and missed her the first time as she went into the box. I sat back down and waited and sure enough she came back out and I caught her and put her in the hive and released her the next day.
I caught this swarm twice, the first time they went into a nuc and came back out and flew back up into the peach tree. I was concerned that maybe they thought the box was to small so I put down a full size deep box and cut off the branch and gently laid them on the sheet.
I didn't have a white sheet but I did have a couple white pillow cases which worked okay since it was a small swarm. I have since gone out and purchased a white sheet and am now prepared for the next swarm. I hope you are not offended by my suggestions, that is not my intent. Just wanted to add to what you did in hopes that it will help.
Oh, one other thing I have learned. Don't be afraid to cut off the limb(s) to your tree even if it does cause them to lose their perfect shape. It will grow back and besides, you will remember that swarm every time you see where the limp was removed.

    • @TheHoneystead
      @TheHoneystead  4 роки тому +3

I love all your suggestions! Thank you so much for taking the time to share! The sheet is such a soft area for the girls to land. I do appreciate this and know that others who read it will as well!

It's up to the beekeeper to keep their bees, You are doing a great job....as good as anyone I know! Keep on beeing Yourself and all will work out just fine! Blessings to you and your family.

I have been scared of wasps all my life and sight of bees triggered me as I was never sure it wasn't a wasp. I found your videos last week and have been watching since, partly to educate myself, but also partly to try to desensitize myself so I can stop that panic reaction. I will never be comfortable with them flying round me, but yesterday I was able to sit in the garden and quietly watch 6 or 7 bees on the purple flowers on our garden wall, about 5 feet away, without panic. Thank you so much for that, and for all you do. Todays' video is the first time I have ever heard a queen bee sing! Your bees are lovely and so are you.

As far as I've seen, queens only sing to keep other queens (or princesses) away. So I think: clear hint there is more than one in this swarm. Only seconds later you can see another queen (entering from top center at 7:49)

It’s always nice to see an experienced beekeeper treat her bees so gently. I think many start off that way but then over time become complacent. I follow several other commerical and hobbyists on UA-cam and none are as delicate and loving as you.
And don’t worry about those who judge you for your decision to wear a suit. I mean, obviously it’s super fashionable and flattering, but it serves another purpose too. Some people forget that nature can be unpredictable at times.

I have always loved Bees. When I was six I found a baby Bumble out in the grass Early in the morning and I thought it was dead, I was Both Happy to learn that it wasn't and alarmed by how much it hurt to be stung. Despite the sting I have always liked them. If I fiend a bee or bumble in my home I endure it gets out safe. I am responsible for Apartment buildings and I make sure we don't use any harmful sprays in our gardens and when we had a nest I made the Building owner pay the extra cost to have the nest captured and sent to a person who has hives. They are so small but one of the most importent parts of a Healthy eco system. Thank you for sharing this and helping others to see there true nature.

I never handle my bees without a suit on. I was stung 37 times at once one time and learned my lesson.
If a different person wants to catch swarms without one they are free to do so and I will not criticize.

Ohhhh ouch!!!! That’s no fun! Glad you are ok!!! I had around 20 pissy gals come at my face once.... walked 1000 ft away and they were still trying to get me! Luckily I was suited up. I later learned they were being pestered by a raccoon.

Most people who make comments complaining of what other people are doing (not wearing a suit, doing something that may risk a few bees) are people who are totally clueless about things and life in general. Reality is that when you work with animals/nature you find your way of doing things that works best, for you, and yes creates the least amount of damage but those two things have to go hand in hand. These people are just pure emotion with no sense of reality. Everything has positive and negative aspects. As long as someone is not being totally irresponsible let them do it the way that works for them. Sure it's ok to give advice but do it constructively.
    Always enjoy your videos

Hi from the UK, Keep up the great videos. You suit up if you want to, I always do as well. Why take a risk. Criticism from other people shows they have a problem, not you. Beekeeping has so many ways of doing the same thing, what works for some does not always work for others. You never stop learning in this hobby. You are showing people how you do it, they can learn from that.

I’m always excited when there is a swarm to catch, it’s fun and amazes people who don’t know what the bees are doing , I love helping people understand bees and I always give them some honey to try, it’s an experience for them and there always happy they got a new home.

Why would someone criticize wearing a suit? That's why they're made, after all. When I took my first beekeeping class at the county extension, one of the very first things the intro speaker said was, "If you want to know how something is done in beekeeping, and ask ten beekeepers, you'll get eleven different answers. You can try their advice, but if it doesn't work for you, try something else." Ignore those who try to push you into doing something their way and only their way. People wear suits, or not. Bees get killed, or not. That's the way the world is. Some folks could stand to be reminded of it.
Nice swarm catch. I also use a white sheet under captures, for the same reason. I'm sure the girls will be happy in their new home, out of the rain. LOL.
    All the best!

Hello from NW Louisiana. I recently had back surgery, so have had lots of time stuck at home while healing to view and learn from many sources. Over the last week started seeing bee keeping video's, many good experienced bee keepers (several talked about in your comments). Your explanation of what you were doing and why was really well detailed. When you talked about the queen singing the first time I missed it as I didn't know they did that, but the second time I did hear it, really cool. I appreciate all the information and how you presented it. I've noticed that I don't see many bees here except in early spring. I have avoided mowing while I do have ground cover flowers because of the bees (figure a pretty lawn isn't worth taking away from the bee's). I've found watching them work was fascinating and since watching all the different you tube videos find myself wanting to learn more and may consider even getting into this myself. Thank you so much for sharing your love and giving the information to help those who are interested understand bees and how necessary they are for the work they do.

Since the honey bee only lives 15 to 38 days the faster they get into a new home the better for the queen to start laying new eggs. I think that alot of peaple that are worried about killing one of two bee,s don't understand the life cycle of the honey bee.
    Doing a great job ❤️👍🏼🤠

I've long ago fell in love with these creatures! IF I had the room now, I'd already have hives. My new place near teh end of next year WILL have space enough that I can FINALLY get me a hive, or two.
