Gun Yoga Fail: The Fagnus Revolver

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 18 кві 2017
  • Produced by Alexandre Fagnus of Liege, this is a military style, six-shot, .450 caliber revolver with a particularly interesting and unusual unloading mechanism. The rear half of the trigger guard is a lever which can be rotated 90 degrees out from the frame, unlocking the barrel and cylinder. The front half of the trigger guard then acts as a second lever to pivot the action open around the rear sight and operate the spring loaded ejector star. The gun dates to roughly the late 1870s or 1880s, and I was not able to find any information on production quantity or even the specific cartridge it is chambered for.

just a note here. "cast steel" on a firearm or tool does not mean that the object was cast. it means that the steel that it was made from was a type that was invented in the 1730's by Benjamin Huntsman in Sheffield England. as cast steel was thought to be the best, the better quality edge tools were made from it up into the early twentieth century and marked as such.

Fagnes revolvers in .41 center fire caliber, with ivory stocks, although my Fagnes loads through a side gate (6 rounds) and is not latched at the top.The interesting thing about mine is the left side plate can be easily pivoted away, exposing the internals for service. It is a DA revolver. It's perfect: it looks like it's made a dragon angry, uses a mystery cartridge (so I would enjoy it as a curio only), and would provide hours of entertainment while I mastered unloading the thing one-handed (even though it wouldn't be loaded, because I wouldn't have cartridges for it). Also, we can't have suppresor or mounted laser pointer (but no problem with red dot or holographic sights). We don't have shitty laws like fixed/limited capacity magazine or exaggerated barrel length requirement.
The only FN products that are illegal for us to own are the ones using the 5,7mm (P90 & Five-Seven pistol) because politicians think it as a cop killer caliber (even tough I can own a .50 cal).

Could you then know the chamber diameter and if it headspaces on the cartridge mouth the depth of it? Also, what about one of those fiber optic endoscopic cameras? There are ones that plug into your phone that would allow you to get a good look inside the mechanism with it still being assembled.

It's most likely intended for .450 Adams ball Mk I. How did I come about this? Circumstantially. I've found other Spirlet revolvers and none of them are marked either, but .450 Adams was the first adopted .450 cartridge in England and would have been the most common choice. Length of cylinders between these and the Fagnus appear identical. One Spirlet was photographed with an Eley headstamped case in the chamber, which would have been an Adams ball Mk III (I think), which is still .450 Adams.

I noticed that in single action you have to let go of the trigger to drop the hammer which seems like a design flaw that'd hamper accuracy and potentially prevent it from going off.

You would have to be a real Fagnus to design a gun like this.

What did the holster look like? Maybe the rib is ground off at the muzzle and beveled like such to index or snug the barrel in place as not to jostle it about.

If the sight is shorter then the barrel it is probably easier to on and off holster it!

Could the weird, chopped-off front sight have something to do with holstering, maybe?
    Im just guessing

Fagnus revolver resembles the galand revolver. If I was going to guess the fagnus be in the same period might have been an attempt to make a cheaper easier to galand revolver. Or maybe a sleeker easier to make version of a webley revolver. It seems to me that the fagnus revolver has some elements that the webley later refined, but fagnus revolver opened up like the galand revolver. This is all just speculation of course, but maybe thier might be something to this Idea.

Did Ian just say "Buggered Up" in reference to some of the workings?

  • @williambtm1

Ian, may I recommend that you get yourself a 'Vernier callipers measuring instrument' [which includes the metric system] to more accurately determine the calibre of say, the entry port and or the barrel discharge port of each weapon. Be it either a manual instrument for under $20-00 US dollars, or a digital read-out instrument obtainable for around $30 plus US dollars. I trust that this could well provide you with a good result.

That 'sight rib' looks like it might have been a crude version of a pictinny rail. Bet you could mount a scope on that, though I've never understood why you'd try to put a scope on a pistol.

At 3:48, when operating the dry fire, single action what caused that slight hang up upon squeezing the trigger? The double action was much smoother.
