He was a peaceful man. He had the ability to heal people. He could bring the dead back to life. He was unjustly executed. His initials were ....JC Story told by a man named Paul.
Almost everyone pays the tear-toll with this movie, so don't worry about it. I think this is probably the best book-to-movie adaptation I've ever seen. Frank Darabont just GETS Stephen King in a way no one else ever has, and he had a fantastic cast who just became the characters on screen. I think it should have won all the Oscars it was nominated for - however, god forbid they reward a **gasp** Stephen King movie!
For me, the only ones close are “The Silence Of The Lambs” and “To Kill A Mockingbird”. One change that I like is that, in the book John compares himself to being lonely as a robin in the rain but in the movie it’s changed to SPARROW in the rain. I just really appreciate that.
@@tinasjostrand2677I used to have a very pretentious notion about King, in that I thought of him as only a story teller as opposed to a creator of characters. I usually bond with books that have characters that I relate to so I never really appreciated his work. I think it was after I read “Needful Things” that I realized what a wonderful character creator he actually is. The only thing is that he creates so many characters. What amazes me most is that the same man who created things like “Pet Sematary” and “It” also created “The Green Mile” and “Stand By Me” (The Body). It must be quite something to know Stephen King in real life.
An exhausting, emotional movie….wouldn’t or couldn’t replace these characters. A story that stays with you far longer than most others. Thanks for the reaction!❤
Everyone loves John Coffey and Paul Edgecomb - and they ARE wonderful... but tbh, Brutal Howell is my favorite GM character. Everybody needs a best friend like Brutal. He's a man of honor, he's got integrity and he's got your back - always. And he's a good man - telling Del all about "Mouseville" to comfort him... shows kindness and compassion. I really like Dean, too.
This my all time favourite film! I watch it very often and it never fails to make me well up. Outstanding acting from every one concerned. Great reaction.
One of my three favorite movies, without a doubt, in my 68 years of life. Extraordinary actors, script, sound, photography and direction! Greetings from Tandil, Argentina! 🇦🇷🤗
It was all there...his lawyer said they couldn't find background on John Coffey. "Like he fell from the sky." The way John excitedly spoke about the earth and the stars and spoke of them like he knew them. Because he did. The background lighting of the projector over John Coffey's head, like a crown. The song about heaven. Many other clues. You should read the book, like true Stephen King fashion, he digs into the characters. What an amazing movie, never get tired of watching it.
P.S. I am 62 years old and during this time I have often been to the cinema and seen different films. I can't remember a film where so many (almost all) of the audience stayed in their seats after the film. Despite the large number of spectators, there was absolute silence both in the projection room and in the corridors. and many of my gender companions (including myself) had suspiciously red eyes and water around the eyes. There were probably sliced onions in the room.
@@angelminaj617 are you so dense that you don't know that statements like that are made in tribute, or to honor the deceased? Not to announce that they have passed. It's common knowledge in society.
John Coffey's execution scene is devastating and it's so interesting to me that I felt like I needed to stay in the moment with him to honor him and to accompany him in his last moment. I'm Finnish and we don't have the death penalty here and I don't think it's right. It's has been so incomprehensible to me that anyone would go see an execution, but watching this movie I realized something: It's like if we the community sentence someone so dangerous they have to die, the least we can do for them is to be there with them. To not let them die alone and to witness what we have done to a human being.
This movie is so great because it takes you through ALL the feels: makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you angry.... you laugh and you cry and you want to scream in frustration. Honestly, you come out of it emotionally exhausted. And yet you love it.
This story is an unflinching exposure of all the good and bad people are capable of. The movie is just as good as the book. They did a great job of compressing the story without sacrificing major important moments.
This movie means even more to me since I had a brain tumor removed 11 days ago. I had no idea I even had a tumor until 13 days ago. Would have been handy to have a John Coffey.
Watching this brings back the memories of my grandmother not that she went through what happened. But she was born March 1894 and died December 1999 on the 26th . Just six more days and she'd have lived in three centuries. What she saw in her life still amazes me. Can you live to see traveling by horse and carriage to space travel ? That's what she did and her stories of her life from living on the Comanche reservation is mind boggling.
When Stephen King released this it came out in paperback. One month at a time for each chapter. I would buy it and read it in a day then had to wait another month for the next one. I was like a kid again waiting on a comic book.😂 This is the only movie I’ve seen where it turned as good or better than written word. A great flick!
Been waiting for this one since you covered Shawshank. It isn't shy about kicking you through the emotional spectrum, is it? The film is a very interesting way of telling the story of the second coming, it's no accident that his initials are J.C. Thank you for this lovely reaction. I’ve watched this movie with many reactors and you’re the first who has left in the dialogue where John talks about being “lonely as a sparrow in the rain….” In the book it’s “Robin in the rain and I think sparrow fits in much better. That’s my favorite place in the movie so thank you…. Also “we each owe a death, there are no exceptions but, oh God, sometimes the green mile seems so long”. You left in the most important moments.
An ordinary man named Paul is telling the story of a miracle man with the initials JC. John Coffey is an empath, a seer, a healer and a teacher, who gave so many on Earth the gift of love and LIFE and then suffers his own wrongful death for the sins of others, that he may live in Heaven for eternity. This one always makes me tear up at John's execution. No matter how manys times I've seen it. I still say this is quite possibly the best movie to ever come out of hollywood. I can't think of one any better.
He's always been fantastic at writing gripping stories with characters people care about, or else he wouldn't have sold so many books. This one just wasn't a horror story - except for Percy and Wild Bill.
The collaboration between Stephen King and Frank Darabont was magical. This movie, Shawshank Redemption and The Mist.Magical times. It'll never happen again!
So many similarities between this and The Shawshank Redemption but while Shawshank leaves you feeling satisfied this one reminds you of the unsettling fact that we are all mortal. Both exceptional.
Offed in the way the local government gets rid of their worst criminals at that time? Went around healing people? Accepted his end and did it willingly?
Great reaction! For me personally Steven King is the greatest storyteller of all time , his grasp of the human condition and character development is unparalleled. This movie and The Shawshank Redemption is in my top 10 movies of all time.
There are films that you watch, and they can affect you, in a lot of different ways, but then you just forget about it, I don’t think anyone who has watched this film, will ever forget it, I know I never will.
So glad you watched this love your reaction this is indeed one of the Best Book / Movie on Humanity written by the Brilliant Stephen King and yes Great Cast everyone of them .
I love that Melinda gave him that medallion - St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection to travelers and against sudden death, many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a staff in one hand. Fits John Coffey.
This story, along with many others is why l love Stephen King's writing. His ability to make his characters so believable and sympathetic and his stories so deep and complex is amazing. He's so much more than just about horror stories.
Almost everyone re-watches 6 to 12 times or they only watch once even though they want to re-watch; it's the emotional roller coaster that keeps them from it. Wonderful film, top 5 on my list.
SalvoG: Did you pick up on the fact that the movie Paul was watching in the nursing home that he got so choaked up about was the same movie John watched as his last request before his execution?
I feel Frank Darabont is the only director who was truly able to bring Stephen King to the screen in a way that really reflects what you experience when you read the novel (although technically, neither one was a novel, Shawshank was a novella in a book of four and Green Mile was a series). I don't watch a lot of reactions to this anymore, but I could not wait to see yours, I knew you would get it all, I had a great time watching this, thank you. ✌❤
Frank also did "The Mist", which I believe was a King short story or novella. It is different from the other two but it does have complex characters who have to make hard decisions.
Michael Clark Duncan was 6' 5" and the camera angles made him look much taller. Plus, Percy was such as little squirt suffering from Short Man Syndrome.

Hey SalvoG, I really enjoyed your reaction to The Green Mile. This was my first time watching any of your reactions. I don't know if you've seen other Tom Hanks movies like Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, Castaway or Captain Phillips just to name a few and if not I'd like to see your reactions to those movies. Other GREAT movies like Only The Brave with Josh Brolin and Miles Teller, is a GREAT movie that most reacters always overlook. Jojo Rabbit is a GREAT dark comedy I think you would like if you haven't seen it. 12 Strong and Hacksaw Ridge are GREAT movies to watch. But I'll see what you've reacted to and hopefully you'll check out those I've mentioned. Keep up the great reactions. Other GREAT movies to check out are Knox Goes Away with Michael Keaton and Al Pacino. The Lovely Bones with Mark Walberg from 2009 I think. It's a GREAT movies most overlooked. After Hours from 1985 is a dark comedy by Martin Scorses that most have overlooked but it is funny. I'll have to check out you reactions, but keep up the great work.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it,it's in my favorite top 10 movies,n at the first how u knew you didn't like Percy and ya you had him figured out quickly,he makes me so angry but then thought he is a amazing actor he pull being a peace of 💩 so well n Sam Rockwell (wild bill) does his part well also lol,the whole case dose I watch it literally over 100 time, I know when the movie is good when I miss the characters when it ends , thank you for sharing your reaction with us I really enjoyed it 😘😍
The average mouse life expectancy is around 4 years. That means Mr. Jingles lived 16 times longer than average. Men’s average life span is 74.8 years. This means that Paul’s life span might be 1,196.8 years long. That’s a very long lifespan
Just a great reaction to, in my opinion, one of the best films of all time. Above all, the ending with the theme of immortality and the pain that Paul suffered over the years makes the film all the more tragic. As I said, a great reaction. Therefore, you urgently need to subscribe to your channel.
I read the book before seeing the movie and had to go back a few pages to be sure of what “current” time was for old Paul to younger Paul and got engrossed into the book forgetting the years in between for Paul to still be alive to tell the story. “Old Paul” played by Dabbs Greer who i watched in LIttle House on the Prairie reruns where he played the minister and looked old then so when i saw this in the theater and saw who was playing old Paul i just though PERFECT casting cause anytime i saw the actor in anything from the later 80s and 90s all i could think of “HE’S STILL ALIVE????” Cause its what i said in reading that Paul was stil alive to tell his story
Some of the cast from The Green Mile were also in other movies with Tom Hanks. Forest Gump and Saving Private Ryan are examples. Saving Private Ryan is another with complex characters, although the beach landing at the beginning is very intense.
"A big man is rippin' your ears off, Percy. If I was you I'd do as he says." In the book, Paul mentions to the reader that, because of his youth and race, Wild Bill had a real chance to have his death sentence commuted (probably to Life In Prison) through the Appeals process. So Percy wasn't just wasting bullets on a condemned man.
When John says im sorry for what i am instead of im sorry for what ive done it gets me everytime ....awesome movie a classic...checkout Forest Gump if you havent seen it..
Agree Salvo, great cast & on point acting. One of my top movies. Glad u made it to this one. Another good Tom Hanks movie is "Cast Away". He has plenty. Or consider Hacksaw Ridge. Then there's a very long movie called "Schindler's List". You may need to break that one into 2 parts. Based on a true story of the German concentration camps. Will definitely make ur eyes rain & tug at the heart strings. You did an excellent job on this editing, followed along smoothly. Thnx for getting it to the longer time. Have a great week. Peace out😊
I love this movie. The parallels to the Bible are unmistakable. John Coffey/JC=Jesus Christ The prison guards= disciples The State Governor/Executioner=Pontius Pilate Percy and Billy=Devil

I’m not sure if you noticed or if anybody has mentioned it, but it’s kind of ironic that Percy ended up in the same exact room where they picked wild Bill up from Briarcliff
I saw this in the movie theater. I had to get up and walk out for a bit during Dell's execution, or I was gonna be sick. But it's still an amazing movie!
When someone like Tim hanks character said you’ll have to trust me, you KNEW you could. I’ve only know one person, in my life that never said anything he didn’t mean and if he did, he always apologized. was not spare with praise, but if he says it, it was the real deal. Only person I’ve ever known who has my trust completely. I’ll be right back. I need to tell him that. Ha.
I always lose it when Paul asks John what he should tell God upon his own judgement and again when he says "May God have mercy on your soul" but you KNOW he was thinking "May God have mercy on MY soul"... and when his voice quivers when he says "Roll on 2"... just gimme the whole damn box of kleenex already.
There was no effective treatment for UTI in the 1930's. Penicillin was not available until after WWII. Patients suffered for years until then. Indoor toilets were not available to most people in the 1930's. Unless you were wealthy and lived in a large city, the only facilities available, especially in rural and impoverished areas, were outhouses or WC (water closet). There is a lot of religious symbolism throughout the story "The Green Mile." Stephen King purposely wrote about this to make correlations between Jesus Christ and the "miracles" surrounding John Coffey. John's attorney said that there was no record of John's existence before his arrest, "It was like he dropped from the sky." Mister Jingles is about 65 years old when Paul visits the shed with his friend.
For his book, 'the Green Mile,' I have to believe that Steven King did research on healers as well as healing techniques. I am an alternative therapist of 43 years and I've been using a healing method called Pranic Healing. This therapy uses the same energies that are used in Acupuncture, and Acupressure. The disease removal procedures used in this film are very similar to those used by shamans in old world medicine and are still used today. Kudos to Steven King for delivering such a compelling revelation!
Unfortunately, Mr. Duncan did not receive an Oscar for his performance. That's a shame, but let's be honest, it wasn't that important. The audience had already made their choice. I don't know anyone, including myself, who wouldn't have given him an Oscar. The game of this big (not as big as depicted in the film) man was simply incredibly thrilling and left us extremely impressed. We would have liked to see a lot more of him. Unfortunately, as we all know, he wasn't able to impress us any further. He has a large fan base here in Germany. This is a brilliant film with brilliant actors.
John Coffey = J.C. (sound like someone else?) if a mouse lived so long, that would mean Paul Edgecomb can expect to live over 1,000 years. how long did J.C. walk the earth, healing people?
How Michael Clarke Duncan was not awarded the Oscar for this performance is beyond me.
Agreed

Frank also did "The Mist", which I believe was a King short story or novella. It is different from the other two but it does have complex characters who have to make hard decisions.
Michael Clark Duncan was 6' 5" and the camera angles made him look much taller. Plus, Percy was such as little squirt suffering from Short Man Syndrome.

Such a wonderful movie.🎥
Beautiful movie. Watched it 3 times.
Coffey beans. That's the pain that he takes away.
Not sure Paul thought about the cruelties Percy would inflict on the patients of Briarwood Mental Hospital as a worker.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it,it's in my favorite top 10 movies,n at the first how u knew you didn't like Percy and ya you had him figured out quickly,he makes me so angry but then thought he is a amazing actor he pull being a peace of 💩 so well n Sam Rockwell (wild bill) does his part well also lol,the whole case dose I watch it literally over 100 time, I know when the movie is good when I miss the characters when it ends , thank you for sharing your reaction with us I really enjoyed it 😘😍
This is a sad movie but soooo good. Good job on your editing!😀
Mr. Jingles was 64 years old at the end of the movie. But of course, mice don't live that long.
Stephen King released this by chapters, it added to the suspense but the wait was agonizing!
If I was you I'd do as he says."
In the book, Paul mentions to the reader that, because of his youth and race, Wild Bill had a real chance to have his death sentence commuted (probably to Life In Prison) through the Appeals process.
Peace out😊
Can’t bring myself to watch this movie anymore. It leaves me emotionally exhausted at the end..💔
I love this movie. The parallels to the Bible are unmistakable.
John Coffey/JC=Jesus Christ
The prison guards= disciples
The State Governor/Executioner=Pontius Pilate
Percy and Billy=Devil
new subs hr. The Green mile is my.ultimate fav hallowood movie its so hearttouching movie😢 and also try to react one of our favorite korean drama (MIRACLE IN CELL NO.7) -korean its comedy drama movie🙏 thanks in advance ❤
I’m not sure if you noticed or if anybody has mentioned it, but it’s kind of ironic that Percy ended up in the same exact room where they picked wild Bill up from Briarcliff
This movie is so heartbreaking I only watched it once. Great performances.
I have watched it at least 10 times. Still heartbreaking.
Ha.
Who the heck is Tim Hanks? It’s TOM Hanks*
this one and cuckoos nest are in my top 3 of all time the other one i believe you are going to watch soon "the shining" enjoy its another masterpiece
If you didn't cry that would be way worse.
If you like this Steven king story you'll enjoy shawshank redemption❤❤
There was no effective treatment for UTI in the 1930's. Penicillin was not available until after WWII. Patients suffered for years until then.
Indoor toilets were not available to most people in the 1930's. Unless you were wealthy and lived in a large city, the only facilities available, especially in rural and impoverished areas, were outhouses or WC (water closet).
There is a lot of religious symbolism throughout the story "The Green Mile." Stephen King purposely wrote about this to make correlations between Jesus Christ and the "miracles" surrounding John Coffey.
John's attorney said that there was no record of John's existence before his arrest, "It was like he dropped from the sky."
Mister Jingles is about 65 years old when Paul visits the shed with his friend.
John is every good and moral black man in America. P.S. An if John lawyer wasn't so immoral maybe John might have healed his son. PRAISE YAHWEH!!!!!!!
you know this is fiction, don't you?
@@JohnLeePettimoreIII Yes Boss😂😅 😆 🤣
P.S. And if John’s lawyer wasn’t so immoral, maybe John might’ve healed his son.*
John Coffey = J.C. (sound like someone else?)
if a mouse lived so long, that would mean Paul Edgecomb can expect to live over 1,000 years. how long did J.C. walk the earth, healing people?
