I was an altar girl and I feel so much guilt. I worry about how much damage I caused, how many boys I prevented from serving, and how many preistly vocations I've prevented. Banning altar girls would keep girls from basically killing the church. I hate to use that language but that's how I feel.

No need to feel guilty. Leadership is to blame.

@@sarahspindler2914 Don't feel guilty at all! It's one thing to talk about the issue from the broader structural perspective and how it impacts society and culture. Such would be, that girl altat servers are not the best idea.
At the same time, you could've gotten individual blessings from that service to the Lord, which you did out of the intentions of love and obedience, and willingness to serve. It's not your fault that the structure is not the best.
To provide another example, to better illustrate. In the past there were, for instance, various 'sorts' (choirs) of nuns within the same Order, based on their social class and wealth they brought to the congregation. Deeply injust system. Nevertheless, that was the times, and still nuns could've become holy by pursuing their vocation, within the imperfect system they were in. St. Faustine recognized this injustice as well, but was obedient and loved God in the place as she was. Just an example to put it in better perspective.

Dear Sarah, please do not feel guilty. You were serving, as that was what God asked of you to do. You were serving your community for good purposes. NO girl/female is killing the church by serving. You are an amazing person. Don't let anyone make you believe you are not worthy of serving God.

I was both an altar boy, AND an altar server! By this, I mean that girls were invited into the ministry as of my second year. I overall, loved serving mass, but my interest in doing so deteriorated after my second year. Not only were girls introduced to the “altar server” ministry, but then…. so went our cassocks & surplices! We switched to albs, making things more boring!

In my town I haven't been able to find any catholic church, apart from the sspx, that doesn't have alter girls and female lector. Alter boys and girls are at the alter wearing sneakers. The female lectors are wearing tight jeans at the alter while reading scripture. It rubs me the wrong way.
I really would like to go to a church that is in full communion with Rome, but I can't bring myself to do it

In God's eyes, we are all His children. God doesn't stereotype and judge based on gender etc., only on good deeds and the number one Commandment 'to love'.... When you are making such comments, you are putting a divide which is not necessary. All the 'human made decisions' do not reflect God's actual message. At what stage would God say - you are not worthy to serve me (I am not referring to the obvious priesthood) because of your gender (once again I am not referring to the obvious priesthood). Most of the laws and regulations within the Church are human made. Is there any wonder younger generations are turning away? When someone serves as an alter server, reader, Eucharistic minister, they are doing it to serve God and their community which obviously comes through a pure heart. They wouldn't be serving, if God didn't call them to do so. When I am at Mass, I concentrate on the actual reason I am there for, not starring at the alter and judging whoever is standing up there. Amen

Great points. I was just recently visiting a parish during vacation and they had female altar servers. This did surprise me, as I haven't seen any for years. Your points, and that of the Church makes sense, but the world breeds inclusivity which can very easily bleed into church practices.

How about that tradition says so? Period.
Do we have to get into the dangers of coed server functions to the souls of the serving boys?

Not following your reasoning. Saint Bernadette, Saint Therese, Saint Rita… etc.. all the beautiful nuns “called” to serve certainly weren’t altar girls.

Yes, I believe that women would be the best as we are organised better but should we? What good comes out for girls who serve by the altar?

@@petermorice6972 our parish wouldn’t have any alter servers at some masses if it weren’t for girls serving. I guess our priest could conduct mass for 800 by himself . 🤦‍♀️

I am an alter Girl and we have more guys than girls at my church. I help teach everyone.
On you comment on alter boys are a way for boys to later become priests. Even before alter girls their was no guarantee that they will be priests.

I can tell you a medievalist, praying in Latin. I challenge you to say that Jesus would tell a girl "I DON'T WANT YOU TO SERVE MY MASS!!!"

  • @tcup8112

Allowing altar girls takes away from the reverence of the mass and defeats the reason why the church has altar boys in the first place. I just addressed this subject with priest and he laughed me off, said the last 3 popes all for “equality” in the church, and is why we see altar girls, which has been going on for decades. Equality?!! This priest nods to the Vatican 2 modernism, even goes as far to say altar girls frankly are better at being altar servers than boys. Huh?!! This thinking now places the emphasis on performance rather than valuing what this position was intended for in the first place, that of encouraging young men for priesthood. The priests can easily do mass without altar servers. The church has been around 2000 years. Now we are demanding equality? That’s like saying to our Lord Jesus, why didn’t you invite any women to the Last Supper. It is time to know the Catholic faith and not be of this (Secular) world.

In my parish there are a couple female altar servers and it is a parish that celebrates the Traditional Latin Mass( those doesnt have female altar servers) even after all of Pope Francis's new decrees. For me as long as it a lay position I dont see any problem, they are not being ordained priestes it really doesnt go against the Church's teaching because the Church doesnt ban women from being Catholic lay or ordained. I dont understand why women want to be priests if it is a search and longing for God and wanting to dedicate their lives to the Lord then why not become a Nun. It seems like a jealousy towards men over the fact that men can celebrate Mass if ordained as priests. And I think that is the problem here, these women dont care about God or dedicating their life to God, they only care about having what the men have. Returning to the female altar servers, if they truly want to serve God just like they do during Mass as altar servers then it might help them decide to become Nuns. This Idea of altar server being training to be a priest would only be slightly modified to being training to be an ordained member of the Church. Regardless of the gender the use of the altar server position is still that of a path to a closer relationship to God which is what we should all search for

Disagree with your anti-catholic position. It's a weird spin. But anti-catholic none the less.
