251 Progression Mastery - All 12 Keys | Triads & Enhanced Chords

- I'm very pleased to share this video with you because the value of mastering 2-5-1 progressions in all 12 keys is immeasurable. Almost every song contains it and most jazz repertoire is built on its existence. Often, the 251 is preceded by a 6, and the 6 often preceded by the 3, but in this video, I focus purely on the 251 and even then, I don't confuse matters with 7ths or modal theory.

I invent the word 'trigression' to refer to the 251 as a collection of three chords to be seen as one unit rather than 3 individual, unrelated chords. You are to master these in such a way that the three related chords 'feel right' together. If I say G, you instantly feel the A and D, as I just did when I randomly selected G.
I go chromatically through the 251s, playing them first as a basic major or minor triad and giving a performance idea/technical solution, then play a more fancy version sometimes to demonstrate how the 251 can sound at a higher level (and to keep those who understand more complex things more interested!)
At the end, I present the jazz classic, A Foggy Day, numerically. This is how one masters jazz repertoire; it truly is blocks of regular chord progressions with a few exceptions to remember for each song. This song goes as follows:
1 6 2 5 1 6 2 5 1 / floating into 4 via its own 2 5 1 with a brief 'up a fourth' movement / 3 6 2 5 1... repeat... end is simply 1 2 3 4 (minor) / 2 5 1. So, 4 thing to remember instead of more than 20 individually chords, plus you can play it now in any key.

Hey Dan you just helped the "light bulb" light up about the 2-5-1. I have been using the circle of fourths and the 2-5-1 is shown so clearly. If I follow the circle I can also see the 7-3-6, 3-6-2, 6-2-5, & the 5-1-4. Learning the circle teaches so much. Thanks for the eye opener.

Have been learning to play the piano since last summer and you helped me a ton!
I eagerly played every day for about six months, sometimes only technical exercises.
Then I read a comment somewhere, that people who learn pieces with synthesia or youtube tutorials and not being able to read notes, aren't allowed to call themselves musicians and just doing these beginner things to impress friends.
And I got kinda frustrated by that.
Since I was completely new to music I learned a piece via tutorial but, I always wrote down the notes in a way I could understand the progression. So whenever I'm trying something new I write it down in my own system.
I've got sheets at home aswell but it yet takes too long for me to progress, and after I read that comment, I felt forced to learn via sheets and a while after that I got frustrated altogether and hardly sat at the piano. Followed by other doubts like learning way too slow etc.
But since I watched your last video it opened me up a bit again.
Who cares how I learn pieces or if I only can play 1 1/2 pieces and some bits after 8 months?
As long as I just enjoy the journey of growing and playing the piano, right?

I agree with the comments you read. It's just monkey-fashion copying. No personal involvement at all; no awareness, no mastery, no understanding, no orientation of major scales, no internal philosophies mastered, no technical errors fixed, nothing at all.. just mindless copying. I'm glad you are enlightened/enlightening to this very important fact - it demonstrates that you know the importance and want to be, and are, of higher mind. At least, however, you did notate and make some kind of personalisation effort. This is good.

Hey, Dan... GREAT lesson, thank you. Might be the best I've seen of these types of videos. I anticipate your others being this informative, and hope I've found the online teacher I can support with Patreon.
Two suggestions, if I might. Slow down just a touch, ideally as you speak, but more importantly as you move from speaking to the played example. I don't mean slow down your playing, but pause just a touch as you prepare to play. Let my eye ground where you are centering, and then I can follow along.
MUCH more importantly, as you "enhance" the chord and give more complicated examples, either do NOT use accidentals and stay specifically in the notes of that scale, OR make note to us that you have thrown in some "next level" fingering. I am so inspired when I hear you play, and with your explanations I think "Wow, I can do that!".... but then you throw in accidentals (such as the E natural at 10:14). The SOUND is wonderful, and as I said, inspiring........ but remember not to give examples beyond the specific technique you are teaching, please.
When I'm ready to diminish this, or augment that, great! But I'm trying to learn ii, V, I.... please keep me there. Or at least, always mention it, as you did so well when you added the 9 and 13 at 17:30, so I can follow the change.

What chords are you playing for the advanced 2-5-1 for D# starting at 10:09? It sounds great. Thanks!
Since hes in the key of Eb, the chord is Eb not D#. Very important to make sure you are oriented in the proper key as Dan always stresses mastery of the major scales.
Looks like Dan is playing a M7 (1357 - Eb, G, Bb, D) in the LH, and playing Maj triad built from the 3rd of Eb on the RH (357 - G Bb D) which becomes extensions, and then flavors with a crush of 9(2) 3 (FG), then 9(2) #11 (#4) (FA), then 5 (Bb).
TLDR;
LH -Eb G Bb D [1357]
RH - G Bb D [357], FG [9 3], FA [9 #11], Bb [5]

Hello there... thanks for your comment! You do well to take the major scale path.
Inversions are a fallacy. Once you know the template of a chord type (based on the base or alterations of: 1357... 9 11 13 if you want the jazz chords), combined with major scale mastery, every chord type becomes playable in any inversion. In other words, they are all as visible as the distracting 'root' position. If I propose you play Fm7, you'll instantly feel the key of F, see its shape, know 1357 have been altered to be 1 b3 5 b7 and know that those notes F Ab C Eb can be played anywhere, in any order. Inversions fizzle away!

Thanks for this video Dan.... do you have a level.... or 2 levels up where you can show how to practice the 3-6-2-5-1 with all the 7ths or maybe even with some 9ths 11ths etc so we can start learning how to move from standard to “fancy” ?

Thank you and welcome to my channel. 251 in minor is different in three ways: the 1 is obviously minor which implies some kind/s of minor scale/s is/are required (1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 - harmonic minor, and/or natural minor - 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7) which means one is ImM7 if the HM is used and Im7 if the NM is used... two is IIm7b5 in both and five is V7 (nicer) if HM is used and Vm7 if NM is used. If you used the the natural minor (1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7), the b7 would make the V a minor chord which isn't possible in a V to I situation, this is why the harmonic is used for the V but natural minor for the I... but as a composer, you can do what you like; there's nothing saying you absolutely can't go Vm7 Im7... it's just not 'theoretically' correct. But who cares about theory anyway?
Example in C NM: Dm7b5 / Gm7 / Cm7
Example in C HM: Dm7b5 / G7 / CmM7
Most common is to use NM but steal V from HM: Dm7b5 / G7 / Cm7.

Sorry for my noob question but I didn't get the reason why you gave example for c# or any other broken note. I thought major scale was C (which you mentioned in the beginning). What am I missing? :)

@@danthecomposer after watching the video again, you gave example of every single note. I thought you said c major and it has to be "white keys" only. But in real life I assume we have to consider major scale and go for its own 2-5-1. I realized late :) thx for your great work.

Hi Dan great video I have been following you now for nearly 2 years and can now see all 12 major scales I am practicing all the chord progressions but finding it difficult when to use inversions or close voicing's is this something that will come with time or do you have to practice these.
Thank you. Very good on your major scale mastery. I recommend poking chord types all over the piano with one finger of each hand. Pick a key. Pick a chord type. See it on your internal piano eyes closed. See it on the piano. Start poking the notes all over the piano until the chord in the key stands out very clearly. This will remove your incorrect idea of inversions and make the chords in keys become very accessible. Make it fun. Add rhythms. Use the cycle of fourths. Change time signature feel if you wish. I recommend the 7, m7 and M7 chord types first.

Really? I did not set that. I always have one at the beginning, one at the end and if it's over 20 minutes, I'll put one somewhere in the middle. I really don't know how or why that happens and I'm a bit concerned if that happens to everyone and they think I am obsessively monetising my videos because that truly is not the case.
