More than a decade ago, I told myself that I wanted to learn Jazz. However, I wasn't finding anything on UA-cam that showed the theoretical and practical patterns easy enough for me to follow. After watching this video and the one titled "the 10 steps to improve jazz", I learned so much that I couldn't believe that so much content could fit in 1 hour. I am so excited to watch more of these videos, but it will take me a little while to master what I have learned from just these 2. I have known about the pentatonic scale for years but never really saw the need to practice it. After seeing Mr. Prehn teaching the pentatonic hand grip and demonstrating it so beautifully, I immediately had a high level of respect for the scale and is now motivated to practice it. Its more than 5 yrs since I've had a motivation like this to practice. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with us Mr. Prehn. I wish I had found this ten years ago!! The best YT piano jazz teacher so far. Until finding New Jazz I never truly appreciated the power of the circle of fifths, 251, church scales or pentatonic scales, or really understood how to practice them in a way that also strikes a chord in my head, pun intended. HOLY CRAP!!! I've been looking for something like this for YEARS!!! I totally LOVE music theory, and know it so well that my college theory teacher told me that in 20 years of teaching, I was only one of two people who he thought could actually teach it. That's how well I understand it. HOWEVER, it NEVER really translated into IMPROVISING!! I have always been trying to figure out ways to get better at soloing. THIS IS IT!! Oliver, Excellent! This is the first Jazz technique that actually shows how to play through a 2-5-1 with class, and ease. New Jazz is just that; it's opening the door to a closed private club, and showing "especially new player's" that they can join the club too. You need to write "Piano Jazz Grips" by Oliver Prehn because this is your "foundation" technique that you will be known by. If you get a chance it would be nice to see this technique in the following: 2-5, and 1-4-3-6-2-5, Bossa Nova, and how to incorporate the relative Am, would make for a very good beginner's foundation to build from in one key CM. Once someone can play in one key quickly, they're encouraged to add another key with one flat, and then one sharp, and so on. Keep up the GREAT work!

Oliver, I really hope you can sense the profound appreciation many of us have for you. Every once in a while someone comes along in your life and unlocks a door you have not been able to find the key to. You know in your heart that there is something wonderful behind that door, beckoning for you to come in. I am a guitarist! I don't even play piano. The music doesn't care how it gets out, it just needs to have a means of expression. You just took years of study and in a half hour, fundamentally changed the way I approach soloing. No one has ever done that for me before. I can "see" the music! It's like all of a sudden, everything makes sense. I am so grateful, you have no idea. Please continue your lessons. I love the reflection versus performance distinction. I have learned so much theory from you because you approached it this way. Starting with theory first is not the best way to get into it. First, hand grip and performance, then after, I want to know "why does that work?" ...and so then is the time for theory and reflection. You are the best piano teacher ever!
This is a beautiful yet very basic approach to jazz improvisation. It will get old quickly and is only a start. In no way is this the basis of playing jazz like some have stated. Jazz is not linear. It takes YEARS to even come close to improvising efficiently. I will say this about the instructor, however.... Your voice, my friend... is captivating. Your patience and teaching style is remarkable. It sounds like you really care about helping people learn this great art form. Thank you
Hi and thanks a lot :) And yes, correct - this is basic stuff, indeed. But yet, we must also remember that a solo does not have to be advanced or complicated to be a "good" solo - a very simple improvisation played by using only simple means can actually be very thrilling... But on the other hand you have a very good point; we cannot cook "Jazz" down to a 27 minute short lesson and think that Jazz is all about using this specific pentatonic technique - Jazz is so much more, that's for sure!!! Mr. Prehn, I cannot thank you enough. You have opened the door between two rooms full of information, letting both info flow and and mix, giving me a foundation to build upon, taking me at least two years ahead. I am a self taught musician who has learned bits of information from many sources, but associating the new with the previous, making them unite and solid but because my main instrument is guitar, guitar teachings I've had up today had led me think pentatonics and modal as two different entities. I knew I had to join them together somehow and been trying to work it a while but I was barely tampering with the lock. You have presented me the whole system of thinking so simple and effective. You are one of very few people who did that in my 20~ years of music life. Thank you very much.

Amazing! I have been trying to get into jazz piano for a while now from a classical background. Everywhere online, people will direct you to jazz theory books or tell you the best way to learn to play jazz is to listen (which I don't doubt, but it doesn't help a beginner who just wants to play some jazz). It made jazz improvisation appear extremely complex and something only to be achieved when you have a vast collection of jazz knowledge. Your videos make jazz approachable and not such an impossible feat.
This is so great! Another example of how powerful the "hand grip + markers" method is for playing something that sounds great quickly. (20:29: "we only think about the pentatonic hand grip and the markers and the chord appears automatically"). Then later, or at same time, learn why it works from other videos mentioned in the notes. This is a great one to do for fun while I am getting my fingers back up to speed on scales, etc.

When playing inside the key the licks end on the 3rd or 7th ; or on a chord note ; the index finger is often used here to end the licks and to pivot to the next chord over which to improv. So again "we are not just pushing buttons ". There is a lot of substance here. Thanks again Teacher Oliver.

Oliver, I want to tell you that I love the "hand grip" approach to improvising. It allows me to play without thinking after one commits the hand grip to muscle memory. OMG... A LIght bulb moment! I finally understand why the modes apply to the chords the way they do! It's pretty simple once it's explained the way you explain it, but no one has ever gotten around to it in the lessons I've had. They explain that they are scale degrees and provide the scale formula for each modal pattern, but never pointed out how they apply to the chords being played. But, it makes perfect sense, because the chords come from all the notes in the key, and each chord is thus an expression of the scale starting at the chord's root, or rather the mode at that position.
Always a good thing to listen & learn from academics but equally it's important to listen to people who know and understand all the academic rules yet are more familiar with how to apply it and show you the practical trics and value of it all.

The music doesn't care how it gets out, it just needs to have a means of expression. You just took years of study and in a half hour, fundamentally changed the way I approach soloing. No one has ever done that for me before. I can "see" the music! It's like all of a sudden, everything makes sense. I am so grateful, you have no idea. Please continue your lessons. I love the reflection versus performance distinction. I have learned so much theory from you because you approached it this way. Starting with theory first is not the best way to get into it. First, hand grip and performance, then after, I want to know "why does that work?" ...and so then is the time for theory and reflection. You are the best piano teacher ever!

This is a beautiful yet very basic approach to jazz improvisation. It will get old quickly and is only a start. In no way is this the basis of playing jazz like some have stated. Jazz is not linear. It takes YEARS to even come close to improvising efficiently. I will say this about the instructor, however.... Your voice, my friend... is captivating. Your patience and teaching style is remarkable. It sounds like you really care about helping people learn this great art form. Thank you
Hi and thanks a lot :) And yes, correct - this is basic stuff, indeed. But yet, we must also remember that a solo does not have to be advanced or complicated to be a "good" solo - a very simple improvisation played by using only simple means can actually be very thrilling... But on the other hand you have a very good point; we cannot cook "Jazz" down to a 27 minute short lesson and think that Jazz is all about using this specific pentatonic technique - Jazz is so much more, that's for sure!!! Mr. Prehn, I cannot thank you enough. You have opened the door between two rooms full of information, letting both info flow and and mix, giving me a foundation to build upon, taking me at least two years ahead. I am a self taught musician who has learned bits of information from many sources, but associating the new with the previous, making them unite and solid but because my main instrument is guitar, guitar teachings I've had up today had led me think pentatonics and modal as two different entities. I knew I had to join them together somehow and been trying to work it a while but I was barely tampering with the lock. You have presented me the whole system of thinking so simple and effective. You are one of very few people who did that in my 20~ years of music life. Thank you very much.

Amazing! I have been trying to get into jazz piano for a while now from a classical background. Everywhere online, people will direct you to jazz theory books or tell you the best way to learn to play jazz is to listen (which I don't doubt, but it doesn't help a beginner who just wants to play some jazz). It made jazz improvisation appear extremely complex and something only to be achieved when you have a vast collection of jazz knowledge. Your videos make jazz approachable and not such an impossible feat.
This is so great! Another example of how powerful the "hand grip + markers" method is for playing something that sounds great quickly. (20:29: "we only think about the pentatonic hand grip and the markers and the chord appears automatically"). Then later, or at same time, learn why it works from other videos mentioned in the notes. This is a great one to do for fun while I am getting my fingers back up to speed on scales, etc.

When playing inside the key the licks end on the 3rd or 7th ; or on a chord note ; the index finger is often used here to end the licks and to pivot to the next chord over which to improv. So again "we are not just pushing buttons ". There is a lot of substance here.

OMG... A LIght bulb moment! I finally understand why the modes apply to the chords the way they do! It's pretty simple once it's explained the way you explain it, but no one has ever gotten around to it in the lessons I've had. They explain that they are scale degrees and provide the scale formula for each modal pattern, but never pointed out how they apply to the chords being played. But, it makes perfect sense, because the chords come from all the notes in the key, and each chord is thus an expression of the scale starting at the chord's root, or rather the mode at that position.

Always a good thing to listen & learn from academics but equally it's important to listen to people who know and understand all the academic rules yet are more familiar with how to apply it and show you the practical trics and value of it all.
