Yes. This is a very effective way to get to know chords and the common progressions. But there is a other aspect of this as well. Look at Warren. See how he varies the voicings of the chords. See how effortless it seems. So natural. One doesn't obtain this skill over night.
In the major scale, the 2 is a minor, the 5 is a major and the 1 or destination is a major and so for example C as the 2 in the B flat major scale has to be a minor chord and F as the fifth ought to be a Major and B flat as the one ought to be a major.....I hope this helps you understand why you start with a minor
I smashed the like! This is the most understandable video I've ever seen on the 2-5-1 chords progression, and combining it with the circle of fourths is brilliant 👏. Cheers! And Bravo! Cool background too: inspiring.
Man...I wish someone would have told me this 5 years ago! That 2-5-1 movement through the cycle of 5ths is the best, most useful exercise I've ever learned. Thank you, Waren.
Thanks so much. I'm someone who can only play jazz by learning one song at a time, laboriously. I'd heard people say to practice 2-5-1 in the circle of 5ths, but I never managed to make sense of that. The shift to minor to change the 1 into the 2 chord was the key! Now I have a gazillion drills to craft. Also, you're doing something else here that's great and you're not mentioning it. You're instinctively adjusting your inversions as you cycle down so that you stay in the same registers, and there's no descent into murky low chords and no huge voicing jump to stay out of the swamp. I'm going to have to watch carefully to see just how you do that.
@@PianoLessonwithWarren I have a question though. Have you learned those inversions and are able to instinctively adjust them due to practice or is there a way to memorize that?
At the end you started playing the cylce of 4ths with 7ths and extended voicings it sounds just like talk music. I've never thought about going about it that way. I'll have to try it.
Even though I'm practicing major scales at the moment, I watch your tutorials as they're posted. I'm wired for sound! I look forward to making progress! Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and gift of music! Much success to you!

This is awesome Warren..looking forward to reach this level..i can see a lot of wisdom here..thanks once again may the Lord Bless you more..Edmond from Zambia
5:31 --- nice!!! Thanks Warren. At first I didn't know why the '2' is C-minor. But can see now. So going from C major to B-flat major --- the '2-5-1' is based on the B-flat major key --- with the '2' of B-flat major key being a C-minor chord. And the '5' in B-flat major key will be a F major chord. And while applying the 2-5-1, I can see that the circle-chart (clockwise direction) shows a C then F then B-flat. These patterns really do tie-up. Also - it looks like (on that nicely created circle) --- once the C is drawn on the top of the circle, and with an 'F' placed as well ..... one possible easy-to-remember way (until we get used to the pattern automatically) is maybe to think of the word 'bead'. And then think of 'BEAD - Gee' or 'BEADG'. Then just have them all (ie. beadg) as flats. And to get the equivalent note of B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, D-flat and G-flat .... we just think of what letter precedes each one --- eg. A-sharp ties to B-flat (ie. A B), and D-sharp ties to E-flat (ie. D E) etc. Although, the A-flat of course is tied to G-sharp (ie.G A order). This is only for remembering the circle letters. But that recommendation of just playing chords by going up in fourths is really amazing and great. Thanks for teaching the method of close voicings too. Will definitely pay attention and remember all this. Thanks again Warren!! Excellent video.
amazing video! makes so much sense now definitely a GREAT way to practice because as you practice you are also training your ear to hear these variations! thanks so much!
Hi, I just happened to discover this video. Greetings from Hong Kong! 😄 I am a beginner. I'd like to know, can I go up with fifth and go down with fourth, while they are of the same note? I just don't understand why I usually see the Circle of Fifth chart, with CGDAEB on the right, seems just opposite to yours shown? 😅 Or it is just a basic understanding fifth when counting fifth to to the right in the chart, meaning that he interval of C to G is a fifth. Or should I think it this way..... Your chart direction is a convenience to consider f the 2-5-1 progression, since Cm is the 2nd chord, we have to find the 5th chord, so it should be F (counting to the right) which is a fourth of C. With inversion, instead of jump too far, it is also a fifth counting down to the left. 😅
The circle of 4th/5th is use to explain many musical concepts. In my video it’s being used in a harmonic context to practice chord progressions. Not for melody lines and movements
Please can you make an advanced 2-5-1 progression tutorial or a circle of 5th tutorial using 7th chords, chord extensions, etc.. in close voicing. Will be great if you do that.
Thank you so much for this lesson. I noticed that if you always do the 5th chord in 2nd inversion, and the 1st chord in 1st inversion, there are some notes that stay still while others move. For example, in Dmin, G , C: D F A D G B E G C There´s some kind of pattern that I could use to go around the circle with this technique? Do this work in first place? ^^ Thanks once again
Depends on which way you want to go around the circle. If you want to go from key of C to key of G, then make the C chord into Am by keeping the E and A and moving the G to A. From that EAC you go to F#AD and then GBD. If you want to go in the opposite direction to the key of F, then make the C chord into Gm by moving the E down to D and the C down to Bb. From DGBb you go to EGC and then FAC. Keep going around either circle till you get back to where you started.
Just to make sure, by doing that exercise starting at C minor and C# minor we are essentially practicing all 2-5-1 progressions in the major scale right? We should be doing the same starting at C.C# major to practice 2-5-1 in minor scales?
As I watched, my head bells were ringing that some famous composition was created from the circle of fifths/fourths, but I just can't remember who or what it was. Can't wait until someone answers!
Making 1 minor means that you are not going through the cycle but jumping through the cycle in just 6 jumps instead of 12 steps. Going through the cycle means that each next 2-5-1 is one 5th lower than the previous one. Making 1 minor means that each next 2-5-1 is two 5ths lower than the previous one. And half of the keys in the cycle are left out, therefore you go through them separately. Two cycles 6 steps each instead of 1 cycle consisting of 12 steps. You can practice both ways, or even jump by three 5ths down - such a modulation is still smooth enough to be used.
i know this an old lesson but this is dope asl thank you! i can practice this exercise for a year and still have much more to learn! bless fr. also the facial hair clean here lol
if we are doing a 2-5-1 but we are heading to a minor "1 chord", is the 2/5 supposed to be minor or major? (edit) oh i'll bet the answer is in lesson 113, i'll go watch that.
Actually, when we are converting the "1 chord" to a minor, we are repeating 2-5-1 not one 5th down, but two 5ths down - or one full step down. The smoothest modulation is one 5th down, but jumping by two 5ths down is also pretty smooth and often used in jazz. Also jumping by three 5ths down (or three half steps up) is smooth enough to use. So we can go around the cycle of 5ths with our 2-5-1, and then we will have 12 such progressions until we come around, or jump by double 5ths in just 6 jumps but leaving half of the keys out, and so, doing another round for them separately. But the 2-5-1 progressions are always the same: minor 2 - dominant 5 - major 1 chords. Of course, 2-5-1 can be in minor keys too, usually with dominant 7 chords as 5 (harmonic minor), but that is a different matter. Here, converting 1 to minor simply means going down not one but two 5ths at a time, but still staying in major keys.
Just wish I could play half the way you do it I'm new and I am seeing so many of your videos. Just need to watch from the beginning while practing every step. May God bless you more
Hi Warren. I have to post a second time to thank you for this video. It can be sooo boring and uninteresting taking even complex chords with upper structures round each of the 12 keys, even round the circle of fourths. Here you have given us a tool to vary the chords going round the circle of fourths after switching to a minor chord first. Depending on what you play, it sounds musical, entertaining and simply gorgeous. I ask myself why it took so long to figure out such a simple exercise. It took you to show me and others how to make practice of the many chords I have been trying to learn sound so good. THANK YOU. IRIE!!
This is SOOOO exciting! I feel like the puppy in the forest, so many trees to sniff. For me, there are so many musical trees to sniff and learn from. Pity I CAN NOT learn it all at once …...
I see you recommend to start the cycle of fourths on the Key of C and complete the cycle. Then to start the same cycle of fourths on C# and complete the cycle, this will have the pianist play each chord as a major and a minor. I have an honest question: What would happen if the same cycle were to start on the key of D or D# or E, etc... ? Is there a name for that? Is there a benefit for that? Or would it be redundant or unnecessary? .... On a different note, you make your piano "mistakes" highly musical. You are my piano hero. Thank you for your tutorials. I need your help. God Bless.

I already have tons of courses on this in my paid program over at pianolessonwithwarren.com
You are an amazing teacher Warren Sir want to be your student
Thank you so much for this lesson.
I noticed that if you always do the 5th chord in 2nd inversion, and the 1st chord in 1st inversion, there are some notes that stay still while others move.
For example, in Dmin, G , C:
D F A
D G B
E G C
There´s some kind of pattern that I could use to go around the circle with this technique? Do this work in first place? ^^
Thanks once again
Depends on which way you want to go around the circle. If you want to go from key of C to key of G, then make the C chord into Am by keeping the E and A and moving the G to A. From that EAC you go to F#AD and then GBD. If you want to go in the opposite direction to the key of F, then make the C chord into Gm by moving the E down to D and the C down to Bb. From DGBb you go to EGC and then FAC. Keep going around either circle till you get back to where you started.
I like the way you teach. U make difficult stuffs easy. But in this course do we practice 2 5 1 in other 12 keys like in c and c#?

Just to make sure, by doing that exercise starting at C minor and C# minor we are essentially practicing all 2-5-1 progressions in the major scale right? We should be doing the same starting at C.C# major to practice 2-5-1 in minor scales?
Correct.

Making 1 minor means that you are not going through the cycle but jumping through the cycle in just 6 jumps instead of 12 steps.

Thank you so much for the great explanation. You helped me understand, visualize and apply the circle of 4ths in a new light.
Gracias profesor saludos desde Mexico!
The circle of 5ths opened my eyes to Richard Smallwood's healing song. Thanks
Jason Woodside yes sah 😊👍🏽🙏🏾
This is the most powerful and useful exercise on You Tube. Thanks Brother!
if we are doing a 2-5-1 but we are heading to a minor "1 chord", is the 2/5 supposed to be minor or major?
Here, converting 1 to minor simply means going down not one but two 5ths at a time, but still staying in major keys.
great video on the cycle of 4ths/5th
john galus thank you :)
Just wish I could play half the way you do it I'm new and I am seeing so many of your videos. Just need to watch from the beginning while practing every step. May God bless you more
Thanks for watching. Just take it one step at a time, you’ll get there 😊👍🏽🙏🏾
Am requesting you play this song using 251: what a day glorious day that will be..
This was very helpful. Thanks
THANK YOU. IRIE!!
Awesome 👏 you’re welcome 😉 glad to here the video helped
I am subscribed to other tutorial vids. But honestly with no offense to others.I find yours with clarity. Thank you Warren..
jeddan david thank you, I really appreciate feedback :)
Nice lesson. To be clear -- you do the cycle twice, once starting on C and again starting C#?
Correct 👌🏾
You are a great teacher
Thank u lots sir
brooo you're awesome. Thanks!
Thanks Warren God bless you
I HAVE SMALL HANDS SO I AM NOT ABLE TO STRETCH BEYOND A SEVENTH..ANY SUGGESTIONS?
J.V. Edwards eventually you’ll be able reach an octave. Stretch gets easier over time.
I hope so! Thanks!
Thanks Warren. Keep all that awesome stof coming.

Thank you so much for your explanation of the cycle of 4ths and 5ths.
I’ve learned something new! Raaaaaspect!
HitMen Production Group 😊👍🏾🙏🏾
This is a great exercise, thank you! Combining this exercise with the root-shell-pretty concept seems like a great idea! thanks for the video
This is SOOOO exciting! I feel like the puppy in the forest, so many trees to sniff. For me, there are so many musical trees to sniff and learn from. Pity I CAN NOT learn it all at once …...
That’s awesome, love the metaphor 😊🎹👌🏾
This make a lot of sense.
It's amazing how I thought it's different but so easy
Glad to got it 🙏🏽☺️
I see you recommend to start the cycle of fourths on the Key of C and complete the cycle. God Bless.
You can start on any note - is a circle ⭕️ so it Durant matter which note you start on, you’ll complete the circle just the same.
Did I just learned the circle of 4ths/5ths that easily?🤔❤
Yes sir 👍🏽😌
You are excellent teacher sir... I hope i learn a lot from your lessons... Im your new fan sir...
