    Thank you Dr. Doug for an excellent discussion on a really important topic of bone health. Although I love yoga and practiced it daily for 40 years and taught for 10 years, I agree with your assessment that yoga probably does not help build bone. What is not talked about very much is the damage that can be done to people with low bone density by practicing certain yoga postures. I believe my daily practice of yoga caused a weakening of my vertebra in my anterior spine and has contributed to compression fractures in my lumbar and thoracic spine. I do not do those postures anymore. If one has osteoporosis or low bone density it is so important to educate oneself on the postures that can cause damage. A good resource for postures that are safe and modifications for people with osteoporosis is, Yoga For Better Bones by Margaret Martin, PT, CSCS. Most yoga teachers do not understand how damaging some yoga postures can be for people with low bone density. Thank you, Dr. Doug for bringing this important topic to light!

      Agreed one hundred percent. So many yoga postures do not play well at all with osteoporosis. Here is hoping that some day, this will be basic and required knowledge for any kind of yoga certification

    I did yoga and Pilates for about five years and my core got very strong, my flexibility improved, and my balance improved. I felt great. I felt strong. But I went from osteopenia to osteoporosis during that time. Now I lift weights.

    I believe pilates and yoga have a place. Especially pilates for strong core which makes it safer and easier to do weight training. Im a pilates/yoga practitioner and I am concerned how badly people's form amd postures are during their weight training sessions. I do not see any core or glute activation and its concerning, for me to protect my back and joints, i have to use my core and glutes. Agree with you on yoga🙏🏼 great for all you mentioned

    Because of shoulder and knee injuries I have a hard time doing weight training at this time. I've been doing the '12 poses' for a few months now, and although I am not sure how much bone I'm building, my muscles have become as strong and firm as when I have done weight training in the past. My core is very strong and firm. It may look easy to do, but I challenge anyone to do this routine with a certified instructor several times a week. It is super challenging, and the poses exert much tension if you do them correctly. There is one standing pose (the last standing pose) I don't do because I'm concerned it may put my low back at risk, so I just repeat the pose prior to it. It is not a passive stretching or meditation routine. Just my experience and 2 cents.

    • @cindyn628
      @cindyn628 2 місяці тому +3

      I fully agree. My "yoga for bones" practice is much different and much more challenging that the occasional gentle yoga class I go to. I think meeting with an instructor, or taking a class/workshop especially for this purpose, is highly valuable in learning the correct way to engage your muscles. It makes all the difference.

    • @roseann5562
      @roseann5562 2 місяці тому +5

      @@cindyn628 At first I approached the practice very cautiously, but now that I'm in the groove I feel much stronger and more confident. I agree with what you said about learning the correct way to engage your muscles. Weight training is so boring, and I mindlessly did the reps just to get it over with. With this routine I am fully engaged and enjoy every minute.

    Thanks for this analysis. It does seem the study design was not rigorous enough to come to firm conclusions. I looked at the Fishman poses early in my osteo research and coildn’t particularly see that any of the poses would stress the bones enough, although the tree pose requiring one leg standing did align to recommendations in Japanese studies that standing on one leg for 1 minute can improve bone. I do incorporate the tree pose held for 40 seconds as it is a great balance pose and the held bridge for 40 seconds. You are right to point out the potential risks in doing some of the poses. I’ve long concluded that yoga has health benefits when done correctly but that it is not for bone building. Thanks for this analysis.

    Well done, Doc. I started Hatha Yoga at 17 years of age - after a lower back injury. Can't say it 'cured' my back but I had long periods without pain and kind of a joggers body without jogging which was nice. Now, at 66, I dare not do yoga anymore. My favorite poses are contraindicated. No showing off for the grandkid but hey, I'm learning to like weight lifting.

    Dr. Lucas, thank you so much for this expose. You are tactful and kind, beyond what this "study" deserves. The researchers should be ashamed of their lack of integrity in designing and steering it toward the desired result, presumably for the purpose of promoting their own interests and careers. Yoga is wonderful for many aspects of health, but likely doesn't do a lot for building bone.

    The Bone Builder System channel - Sarah Mapes - is interviewing Dr Fishman tomorrow at 11.30am. I've never tried yoga but am open minded about its positive health benefits and perhaps its bone building potential. Yoga muscle control has to be beneficial for bones in some way, surely. It can't do any harm.

    I've been doing Iyengar yoga for nearly fifty years. I have osteoporosis (don't remember my numbers right now) but so far no issues with it. I think the yoga has been incredibly beneficial in terms of strength and balance and all round well being. But I am now also incorporating more traditional strength and resistance training into my regime with weights. I agree the particular study you cited is not well designed. But I am a true believer in the "right kind" of yoga for bone and general health.

    I very much appreciate the critique of the study. I have a question about underlying facts and conditions:
    Dr. Fishman has written:
    "12 yoga poses that we believed would stimulate increasing BMD in the lumbar vertebrae, the hip, and the femoral neck Yoga poses were selected specifically to produce
    * torque and bending of the proximal femur,
    * compression of the pelvis, and
    * twisting of the lumbar vertebral bodies.
    The choice was determined because these are the most common sites of osteoporotic fractures and the anatomical regions measured by the DXA scan.
    However, osteoporotic fractures frequently occur in the thoracic spine, the forearm, and the ribs. These sites were not studied and might not respond to yoga directed toward them in the same way."
    Would you please comment (perhaps with some input from your yogi-network) this? Do the exercises NOT produce the things he says they do? Or do the y NOT produce them if there is no loading, and loading of those movements is dangerous? Or is the production of these things NOT relevant to improving bone density? And/or ?
    Thanks.

    • @OrygunKate
      @OrygunKate 2 місяці тому

      I think a current study he is doing includes poses/asanas that will target the wrists and ribs.

    Yoga may be appropriate for people with normal collagen. But because with genetic defects in the collagen, doing yoga when you have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, of the hypermobile type, appears to be "easy," stretching can rip tendons and ligaments, and can do more damage than good.

    I am so disappointed. I signed up for the “chance” to win free meat. My bad for falling for something that I was really suspicious of. Now I am the recipient of a barrage of emails to buy this very expensive beef. Until I received this information I had really started to believe that maybe I should increase my beef consumption. I had stopped eating as much beef as I used to eat because I wasn’t enjoying beef any more….but that’s only one thing.
    Now I am left wondering how much I should believe of what you are saying about osteoporosis and osteopenia. Is eating more beef really helpful or are you just making money off of selling beef? It’s very disheartening and disappointing. Trying to live off of Social Security and a small pension has become a lot more difficult. The cost of food has escalated dramatically, making a truly healthy diet more difficult to achieve. You might as well tell me to buy Kobe beef:(
