    Thanks, you answered so many of my questions about probable causes of my osteoporosis journey. In short, I am 74, very active, painfree currently. Had a hip replacement at 64 after a nasty fall while trail running on rocky desert trails. Osteoarthritis was mentioned so I changed my diet to include meat and started using goat milk in coffee and cooking. No alcohol or cigarettes and intermittent fasting for the past 6 years. I wear a fitness watch and complete 10K steps daily. The game changer I believe has been the addition of Strontium, Berberine, Boswellia extract, D3/K2 with my other vitamins. I put powdered Magnesium Glycinate in my morning coffee. I was following a vegetarian lifestyle for a few years before my hip fracture. My recent DECA scan reports normal bone activity with low probability of fracture. Thanks for your advice and input on this very important topic.

      Wow very impressive results! Inspiring. I was diagnosed with osteopenia, due to a parathyroid condition only recently diagnosed that day regulated my calcium loss. O am otherwise active training heavy weights 3x week at gym, and use similar supps to yours now. Hopefully once my parathyroid is sorted I regain bone strength. I am 53, no illness history ( so that was a shock!) . Thank you for creating healing hopes!!

    Glory B offers some reasonable jump and high-impact exercises that check out with current research. I give her credit for introducing me to that concept and I'm appreciative. I find the rest of her content unsupported in the available literature. We have to be our own advocate, and do our own research, taking the good from various sources, not just one. Thanks for this great video, respectfully presented.

      I really don’t believe whether a person eats meat or is vegan is a factor in getting osteoporosis. I personally have osteoporosis and I am vegan. I have not always been vegan but only became vegan when I was diagnosed with possible Lupus and definitely Sjogrens. A plant based healthy diet has helped manage this and I do feel better eating a plant based diet. But as far as osteoporosis, I did not exercise, I am small, 95 lbs., only 4 ft 11 inches, white, light complexion and a family history as my older sister has osteoporosis and she is not vegan. I think it is important to eat healthy and exercise especially weight bearing.

      @@margarethawk3073 I largely agree with you. I always try to research the constantly changing and sometimes deceptive "science" across the spectrum, and I also allow for differences in individuals.
      I was a vegan for 5 years and felt great the first 2 of that. I gradually started getting negative symptoms and eventually had to eat animal products again. I've been keto-vore for 3 years and feel the best ever. I also have a small frame and found it very difficult as a vegan to get enough protein to build and maintain muscle mass and the energy for rigorous exercise. But that's my journey and I'm thankful I've found what works best for me, just as you seem to have. That's why I steer clear of extreme recommendations for every one. I pick and choose what works.

    I'm so glad I found you. I have been following the Save Institute and Dr. Susan Brown, who also is adamant about the alkaline diet. I had just discovered Glory B and was more interested in her exercise than diet. I've been doing keto and don't want to give up most of my meat. Also, I've read as you get older (I'm 67 this month), you need more protein. My older sister was a vegetarian for years and had severe osteoporosis and a fracture in one arm, broke the other arm, and a broke a leg, all due to falls in one year. She never regained the strength in her leg. I have osteoporosis and need to get serious about exercise. I'm thankful I don't have to become mostly vegetarian to help my bones, that would be too much of a change in addition to adding in the exercise. I just downloaded your book and look forward to learning from you.

You have a clear, concise way of discussing the topics and to be honest, I'd even prefer a bit more length/increased resolution for certain things (an example would be when a clinical term for an I/O condition is used in a synopsis, which might have the effect of excluding all the "grey area"/non-clinical status that most of us live in) in order to help those of us that are seeking to be proactive so as to not degrade into those negative clinical diagnoses, arguably the most frustrating part of self-directed health goals. Your recommendation to listen to people who know a lot about the topic we want to know about is why I am listening to you about bone health. I recently had a follow-up DXA scan because after my breast cancer surgery, I was going to be taking Anastrozole. I was 74 at the first scan before starting the medication. It showed a very healthy bone density. (e.g.: lumbar T-score = -0.5; mineral density = 1.115 g/cm2) Two years later, my DXA showed a decrease in mineral density to 1.040 g/cm2 with a T-score of-1.02. While not terrible, there is more of a loss than I want. It puts me into the osteopenia category. So, while I have not as yet seen your Best Diet recommendations, I have increased my protein intake and resistance training since getting those latest results a couple of months ago. I plan on requesting another DXA next year to see if my efforts are working to overcome the effects of the anastrozole. If not, well, I will cross that bridge when I get to it.
    Thanks for this video. I’m confident that the one on the diet you recommend will be just as informative.

    I agree with a few commenters here.. sweet podcaster but…
    She had osteopenia
    She pushes Garden of Life vitamin mix that contains strontium. This substance was used in the famous COMB study (the NIH report is interesting ).. Strontium, along with K2, magnesium, D2 etc.. and weight exercise. There was a good result.. HOWEVER, strontium changes Dexa results which was not mentioned so you can’t be sure of the scan results and the reports I could find were all mixed on safety long term of Strontium which I found scary.
    Another UA-cam channel, Dr Susan Brown,PhD pushes the alkaline diet and (of course) her huge line of vitamins. She is a medical anthropologist and nutritionist.
    I am so very grateful to you for clarifying this topic. Too many out there are “experts” and muddy the waters for those of us who want REAL ANSWERS-based on actual science-not twisting the facts to suit the narrative.

    I noticed most if not all of the “studies“ GloryB used were more than 15years old. I had understood that to be taken seriously, we should only use studies done within the last 10years. Makes it even more interesting to me looking at what she cites. 🧐

      @Dr_DougLucas  9 місяців тому +2

      I appreciate your perspective but disagree a bit. Well done studies from over 10 years ago should be considered as legitimate. We haven’t changed as a species in that time so a well done study should be fine to consider.

    • @hikari8858
      @hikari8858 9 місяців тому

      @WomblePuppy -- How long ago a study was conducted is not relevant. What matters is how well the study was designed, how well it was conducted, and how accurately the results were reported. Nowadays, too many so-called studies are nothing but junk science (poorly designed, and with strong ideological and financial biases).

    Even though I don't enjoy eating meat I know I have to eat what is best for my body and my bones,, there's so much misinformation when it comes to osteoporosis but I have heard vegan doctor say that a plant-based diet can reverse osteoporosis but I'm just not convinced though it is tempting ,, a part of you wants to try it but I just don't feel in my gut it'll be good for my bones

      Yep … go with your instincts. If vegetarian diet reversed osteoporosis, then no one who is vegetarian would get osteo (short of other complicating factors). Other protein sources of fish, turkey, chicken and eggs are all good if you’re not crazy on red meat. Maybe a stir fry with red meat might be more palatable? We have to enjoy what we eat, so good luck on getting the balance right for you.

      Without spitting them you're freaking out but I do it because I have to I'm very serious about helping my bones get better
      I was vegetarian from age 11 up to age 36
      But for me it wasn't just that I was vegetarian it was I was eating under Caloriesand under protein and I also didn't menstruate for 11 years I have a lot of rebuilding to do on my body and I just didn't feel like a vegan diet could do it , even if I got enough calories I still don't know if I could put all my faith on plants alone

    I didn't read all the comments so perhaps someone has mentioned this already. At 30:00, you mentioned that the EPIC-Oxford study indicated a higher fracture risk for vegans and vegetarians. If you search pubmed, you will find an abstract that says this increased fracture risk was very likely due to an inadequate calcium intake in the **vegan** diets. "Conclusions: In this population, fracture risk was similar for meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. The higher fracture risk in the vegans appeared to be a consequence of their considerably lower mean calcium intake." Vegans (and all people) should be very careful to check that whatever diet they follow has adeequate nutrition. I wouldn't be surprised if vegans with a higher calcium intake were comparable to meat-eaters wrt fracture risk. It seems like many people will alter their diets without checking to make sure they are not now missing nutrients - something that might come back to bite them later in life. Please track your nutritional info every now and then and see if you need a supplement. I'm sick and tired of the refrain that supplements are a waste. Clearly plenty of people need them.

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  8 місяців тому

      That's possibly true but we don't know that for sure. I doubt it's just calcium related as osteoporosis is not a calcium deficiency for most people. It's likely a combination of deficiencies.

    Thank you for your analysis of her video. As an RD, I'm very careful of recommendations as many of the aspects of nutrition remain very controversial. The most important recommendations that I make is to eliminate processed food (as much as realistic), consume sufficient high-quality protein, and reduce frequency of eating. The incidence of Type 2 diabetes is so prevalent that people should consider restricting carbohydrates in addition to reducing the frequency of eating.

My diet consists of whole foods only. This "Susan" whatever, is not someone I would listen to. I find these "factions", Vegans vs Ketos vs ominivores tiresome and frustrating. My one and only go to channel for nutrition facts is, Dr. Gil Carvalho, "Nutrition Made Simple". He is unbiased, highly credentialed, his research is science based. I'd like to see Dr. Lucas have him on the show sometime.

      Hi there. Thank you for sharing! Eating a vegan diet does reliably lower cholesterol and both statin evidence as well as epidemiology studies on plant based diets support the association of reduced heart disease risk with reduced cholesterol. For some people this may be a good way to reduce risk. However, what I see in many plant based eaters is worsening of metabolic function and glucose metabolism as a result of the increased carbohydrate content. This is undoubtedly more risky than elevated cholesterol. I'll check out Dr. Gil Carvalho! Thanks for the recommendation. I'm not anti-vegan if it works for someone. I think there is remarkable genetic variability and we all need to find what works well for us.

    I have the book. Watch all of your videos. I will never give up meat again (besides, I love it too much). My osteoporosis journey started in 1990….I switched to an all plant, low fat diet, because…fat was bad😂! Started to have weird things happen with my body…eye sight..numbness and tingling and especially bathroom issues(more on this later) Gained 80 lbs. Fast forward to 1998…moved back to a more balanced diet and exercise….lost 85 lbs. got married…now 37…husband tall and thin…junk food eater…hated meat..moved back to a more plant based diet..actually probably a more starch based diet…and lots of cola. Jump to 2004…now weighing 275 lbs…5’4” (obviously doing weight bearing exercise just by walking) decided to have gastric bypass…so my already screwed up metabolism becomes more screwed up….but gastric bypass diet is protein forward..who knew😂. Started to get really bad acid reflux, put on Pepcid. It cleared up..stopped Pepcid. 2009 rolls around..body goes into total melt down…muscle spasms all day and night…. Weird head zaps…can’t feel my left leg hit the ground…leg continually buckles…but…I’m only 155, so life is good…till it wasn’t…..diagnosed with MS at the end of the 2009(I believe this started in 1990)….2015..enter severe bouts of head pain, muscle spasms depression(MS treatments in my opinion) gained all my weight back….put on a drug called Baclofen for my muscle spasms…my husband finds me sitting cross legged on the floor….i don’t remember how I got there, but I never went to bed….ambulance 15 day hospital stay…two blood transfusions…nobody can figure out why all my numbers were so bad other than the lactic acid overload from muscle breakdown….continued with blood transfusions….until an intern asks if anyone gave me a B12 shot. Got one…blood stabilized, had to learn how to walk…and come to terms with the fact that I am now in end stage CKD. With nutrition..primarily fat and protein…got to stage 4 CKD….stabilized there and now bounce between Stage 3 and 4, my nephrologist can’t believe it’s from my diet. In 2017, I started to get severe acid reflux, with dysphasia…..was put on an immunosuppressant for my MS…had 4 bouts of severe aspiration pneumonia….now have damage in my right lung. At one point, my CO2 was in the 30’s my blood oxygen in the mid t0’s…ambulance, 15 day hospital stay and welcome 2018…..I stopped the immunosuppressant…didn’t take anything for a year..dysphasia under control with slower eating…bad habits changing…2019..at 59…weighing in at 288..I met super group BTS…we had a photo taken..I was mortified at how I looked next to my friend….along comes COVID..house bound…..lots of time to think about life and read….and went KETO full on towards mid 2021. October 5th…BTS tickets are on sale for their first concert since COVID….already lost 50 already and excited for the Hunger Games to obtain tickets to the concert. Started to get up in the morning, and as I was moving a pain seared through my chest…I swore I was having a heart attack…911…no heart attack..vitals excellent…transported to hospital as I could not move and was writhing in pain….perforated ulcer in the anastomoses. A common ulcer now being found in gastric bypass patients. 15 days in the hospital after life saving surgery….was put on Omeprazole twice a day for life…and this is where everything in my life came to full understanding….i was put on a tube fed diet for the ulcer to properly heal…..the tube feeding was 2600 calories of 70% carbs, 20% protein and 10% fat…I was tube fed for 6 weeks…thought it would jump start my diet…..nope..gained all 50 lbs back….went right back to Keto when the tube feeding was done, but had to start with just very soft scrambled eggs. Jump to ringing in 2023….i no longer eat anything made with grains or beans, except maybe in a very odd occasion. I drink primarily water 2-3 liters a day…..and eat a meat forward diet. I weigh between 155 and 160…depending on the day.
    Here is where the osteoporosis comes in…everything I have done since 1990..has lead to my diagnosis of osteoporosis in my hip and femoral head. My back is good…except L2-L3…having a fusion before the end of the year for that as the disc is gone……when I got the diagnosis…first thing I did was call my gastroenterologist office…..told him I was stopping Omeprazole immediately. He told me to move back to Pepcid….i have doubled up on K2 with MK7, and dropped MK4. I take magnesium, calcium..in the form you suggest and looking for a good strontium supplement. I refuse to take osteoporosis drugs. I want a REMS study, but live in the PNW and don’t know where to get one….i will travel where I have too to get one. I believe my bones density in my hips is compromised, but are not brittle. I have MS and fallen enough times and have never broken a bone…even up to less than a year ago.
    Your book was very insightful and I read it in one night. I have already started following some of your suggestions from videos. And I definitely eat a meat forward diet. Very little of anything with sugar or carbs.

When you mentioned Glory B, I was hoping that you'd be talking about her methods on improving her bone density, like jumping 20 times with 30 second intervals. Hope you will do that one day Dr. It does seem relevant and right because from your interview with Osteo Strong founder, high impact that is 4.2x of body weight is needed to trigger bone growth, which points to jumping as potentially one of a very effective bone improvement exercise. You also mentioned in one of your videos about the Liftmore Trial where they did the jumping chin up with a drop landing - that is similar to jumping as well. Hope to hear your kind reply on your thoughts of jumping as one of the ways to improve BMD and maintain strong bones over the years. Thank you Dr!

      @barbs1298 why the hateful speech? I've corresponded with @lebooshdiaries dozens of times over the lifetime of my channel. If I've done something offensive to you I'm open to criticism. Your comment that I won't reply is offensive to me. I spend hours each week communicating with people that I know will never be patients. Yes, I run a company and need to generate revenue to pay my team and fund their benefits. What's wrong with that? I don't actually need to communicate with anyone on this channel to generate leads like most physicians who are using the platform for this purpose. Our mission is to educate and support those with osteoporosis. If you don't like how we do it you can seek your free physician level education somewhere else.

      @@louisebauer4897 I don't think it is a disease, but a condition. I put on my plate 20% of protein (fish or meat) and 80% vegetables. I judged by eye, of course. I am lactose intolerant, so I added calcium supplements. Check with Dr Lucas about it. I am still an archaeologist, so I am outdoors for at least 4 weeks a year doing great physical exercise and taking some sun. I also work in the garden and exercise every day for almost an hour. The sciatica that plagued me before has also completely disappeared.

    It's all so confusing, for sure. I think that the Save Institute actually recommends 80% vegetables. I remember her saying that they don't believe necessarily that you should be 100% vegan. Thank you for siting that study about vegetarians having the highest fracture rate. I had read that a few years ago, and it definitely helped steer me in a better direction. We also know that the pharmaceutical solutions are harmful in the long run, so that is not an option. We need more studies on how to repair our bones. Thank you for your efforts.

      @@wendym2544 A few ways to look at this. 1. Protein deficiency either in amount or quality. 2. gut dysfunction from anti-nutrients inhibiting absorption.

    • @wendym2544
      @wendym2544 10 місяців тому

      @@Dr_DougLucas Thank you. I hope it's not gut dysfunction from the anti-nutrients creating problems. I eat a ton of veges and grains that are said to have anti-nutrients. I don't have any gut issues that I know of. I'm in my early 60's. I do take the precautions that I know about, such as soaking grains/nuts overnight. I do get protein from veges, nuts and quality meat and fish, and eggs.
      I don't plan to have my bones tested because the truth is, even if I found out I had "O", I wouldn't do anything different than I'm doing now. I don't believe medication is an option and I believe in healthy whole foods and "doing no harm" first, over supplements. I don't say that in a "cocky" manner, but I do resistance training with weights and body weight, and I walk every day, don't drink alcohol, and have my caffeine consumption down to practically nothing, and will soon be caffeine free. So I feel I'm doing all I can.
      Thanks for the video and your reply. You reply makes sense. I've added a bit more well sourced meat and fish to my diet to make sure I get enough protein. Let's just hope the anti-n's don't get me! (seriously :) )

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  11 місяців тому +3

      Loading the spine can be difficult. Osteostrong uses load through the arms to generate multiples of body weight. Carrying heavy weights can do it but must be done with caution and direction. Marodyne reports improved spine BMD with use as well. The neck is very difficult to load and I’m not aware of any studies looking specifically at this.

    I wish you would address some of the new ones in the study that showed higher risk fracture. I’m on vegans. I have been led to understand that most of those fractures were wrist and not hip, and that a possible explanation is simply the smaller body size of most vegans, as veganism generally, is concomitant with normal body weight.

    Well, my experience of being a vegetarian, then vegan for 10 years or more suggests that's exactly the reason for having osteoporosis in the first place. I think I've come down with it because my diet did not include enough proteins, far from it, as legumes have little protein content and that little is not as bioavailable as that in meat, and it lacked precious minerals such as zinc not to mention vitamin K2 and d3. Calcium apparently abundant in some veggies becomes unavailable because of the many phytates and oxalates that bind to it! Also an imbalance in the diet in favour of way too many carbs was an issue, and low vitamin A as only a small quantity of carotenoids from veggies converts into retinol which is what our body requires. Even the omega3s from linseeds chia etc. are a scam as again our body much favours those from fish. Add to this diet, plenty of exercise, and you get a full blown burn out. In my case, it was The China Study that totally misled me...

    At 22:27 I got confused. You concluded with "we could say the soda had 3 times the protein" but did you mean to say "3 times the acid"? You said it was a rabbit trail anyway, but I wonder if that's what you meant, because obviously soda has no protein. 🙂

    I've watched Glory B. a few times recently and I didn't even realize she was an influencer but it makes sense because she's got the Slick Channel with all of her slick videos and exercises Etc. My question is if she's been a vegan for 20 plus years and it's so great for your bones then why did she end up with osteoporosis? I have to wonder if anything she's saying is true and I was a vegan for about 10 or 12 years and during that time I did find out I had osteopenia but I was also on estrogen blocking hormones for a female problems so I don't know if it was all my diet but I do know that when I went off of a vegan diet and started eating meat at my health improved 1000%.
