Marillion were always underrated, and even mocked at the time they appeared in the mid-80s, basically because they were 10 years too late. Fish sounded like Genesis-era Peter Gabriel, at a time when the trends were gloomy post-punk, synth-pop and hair metal, none of which had the time for such operatic over-the-top progressive rock. But they made amazing, amazing songs. Try Misplaced Rendezvous / Windswept Thumb / Heart of Lothian ua-cam.com/video/J-aocgsE8-Q/v-deo.html
Welcome to Marillion. They began in the 80s. But they continue to this day with a different lead singer and drummer to whom you see in this video. Lots of great stuff in both eras. A couple of my favourite from this Fish (singer's name) era are "Garden Party", "Punch & Judy" and "Sugar Mice". Try "The Space" live at Royal Albert Hall" for a peak at the current line-up.
So pleased that you’ve discovered Marillion, one of the best bands in the world and still going strong to this day. Their latest album (F E A R) is a true epic and well worth taking a listen to if you appreciate more involved music. The track you listen to hear was the title track from their first official album. The lead singer “Fish” made four excellent albums with them up until 1988 when he left the band to go solo (check out “Fish”). The final two studio albums with Fish were concept albums, those being “Misplaced Childhood” and “Clutching at Straws” (by personal Fish era album). Fish was more of a poet than a singer, by his own volition; sometimes live his voice became a little strained; but still fine :) In 1989 Steve Hogarth (known as H) joined Marillion; he cut his own path and didn’t try to mimic what Fish had done, but “H” is equally charismatic live in his own style. “H” is also a very talented lyricist, his vocal range is different but I believe wider. He’s also a keyboard player originally but also plays rhythm guitar, percussion and his own invention “the cricket bat” :) There’s a massive back catalogue of Marillion’s work, topped off my the live at the Royal Albert Hall with friends from the orchestra event about two years ago, that you must check out. They are currently writing their 19th (or 20th) studio album at the moment. Oh and in the late 90’s they left the label system of music and invented “Crowdfunding”, so their work from that point forward is directly funded by their fans, some of the best fans in the world. They are all superb musicians :) Here’s three links for you to look at when you have time: The Space - live at the Royal Albert Hall in 2018 - ua-cam.com/video/XYNMRXxeqvk/v-deo.html A Collection - live - ua-cam.com/video/F2O1zazqODA/v-deo.html This Strange Engine - live at Minehead in 2003 - ua-cam.com/video/Acosk3NuLuQ/v-deo.html
@@johnjohn37371 IMHO, Steve Howe from Yes, Steve Rothery and Joe Walsh from Eagles are my 3 fav guitar players. I could mention David Gilmour, Santana, Jeff Beck and many more but I feel the 2 Steves and Joe bring out their emotions through their fingers to the cords. I don´t know how to explain it.
I know the music comes first, but man....the lyrics. I feel that a lot of people are missing out on that part. He is bringing true poetry directly into your soul.
Marillion is great, but my favourite progressive rock band is Genesis, with Peter Gabriel. I like 'Firth of Fifth' and "The Musical Box" among others real pearls.
Some months ago I was about to suggest you Marillion!! I have the feeling you'd love their album "Clutching At Straws" (1987). You could start with Warm Wet Circles. Great band.
I believe this was the last night of the 1983 tour. The DVD is available, I have it of course. it's called 'Recital of the Script'. I also have 'Live at Lorelei' on DVD, which covers 'Misplaced Childhood' and 'Clutching at Straws' as well as 'Script,,,' And 'Fugazi' as well. I love THE Marillion.
Great to see this reaction, thank you. There are so many amazing songs to appreciate while Fish was still the singer, yet so many reactors jump straight to Hogarth... If you do any more I'd love to see you react to Forgotten Sons or Warm Wet Circles.
Guitarist Steve Rothery was inspired by Genesis and this song was the name of their first album: "So here I am once more ..." Unique composition. Classic progressive rock.
I became the singer in a Marillion Tribute Band and despite being in music for years, I was only familiar with the inevitable "Kayleigh". I knew that there was a different singer then Fish and that they were still creating and playing music, but I never heard any of it. And I was so happy to finally discover something interesting and of high value again. What followed after that (years later) were Steven Wilson and eventually Opeth, that maybe came close (but of course not so much part of me). We played music from all of their catalogue, both singer areas. And although I'm personally much more of a "Fish-Type", I definitely like their later work more. I'm not a lyrics guy, when it come to music, even I'm quite proficient when it comes to English - I don't seem to notice any of the meaning while listening. The later work to me is much smoother and emotional, while playing the old stuff could be more fun. Some of my favorites would be "Ocean Cloud", "Fugazi", the whole "Brave"-Album, The whole "Marbles", "Out Of This World", "Cinderella Search" - take your pick :)) I retired after our surely most remarkable gig (maybe not the best, though ;) ) with Steven Rothery on stage.

Early Genesis was one of their inspirations. They were one of the first to perfect the long-song format but they had their own inspirations as well (LedZep)
Fish's explanation of the song is (approximately) that it's about the guy who, unconsciously, allowed his relationship to fracture just because he wanted to experience the kind of heartbreak that inspired so many famous songs - and now he regrets it, now he's desperately trying to get back together with the girl he neglected, but it's too late, and he knows it. Pronunciation error - "Urea Heep"?! I "pissed myself laughing" at that!
l am a seventies boy, l was listening to Genesis, yes, pink Floyd, never heard of Marillion,. I dercover them in the 2000's, now l am a huge fan. Please listen to THE SPACE, life, or Neverland life

About where this genre started, I think the common answer would be Genesis. Back in the day, Marillion were called Genesis-wannabes by some people. Foolish people. However, the resemblence is there.

Fantastic! You've picked a version with Fish. Marillion was best when he was with them, with his expressive voice & amazing lyrics. I loved Marillion until he left, then the band lost its spark imo. Steve Rothery is a great guitarist though, one of the best.
Nice video but one thing you fail to mention is how off the wall this was for 1983. Britain had just had Punk, New Wave and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal... 70s prog was completely out of fashion and Marillion was the only band doing it in a way that could attract significant audiences. They were competing with bands like Maiden, U2 and the Smiths - and managed to get fans from both camps. Marillion was the emo band for emo kids 15 years before emo was a thing. Their generation's My Chemical Romance perhaps. They were the second band I ever saw live. Never stopped loving those first two albums.
