Great review! Haven't bought this set yet, but will soon. Tull did play Weathercock for a few years in the 2000s. You can see a nice video of it from the 2005 Lugano Jazz Festival here on youtube.
As I type this I am listening to the album for the first time ever. Listening to the 5.1 mix on the Blu-ray. I was expecting to be underwhelmed, but I gotta say I'm loving it. Maybe it's the Jack and Coke talking. Love your reviews man. Keep it up! 🎄
Ok, I’m a woodwinds player and that includes flute. I picked up flute because of Tull. Like many musicians, because I’ve had to play so many of the same songs over and over, I’m SICK of Christmas music for the most part. As a result, my taste leans more toward the traditional rather than Frosty, Santa Coming to Town and that garbage. As a result, the Tull album to my ears is like an oasis in the desert. I love it. If for no other reason than it’s Martin Barre’s last album with the band makes it hard to dislike. I think it’s great all-around. *DUCKS* Love your reviews, keep up the great work!
@@roberthelme8000 thanks ! me too ! I walked a thin line with this one, offering honest and hopefully balanced criticism while also trying to convey the fact that I overall greatly enjoy this album. Particularly Pavane, which I forgot to mention for some reason. As a flutist who had collegiate lessons I really appreciate it when Ian tackles classical literature.
I always liked TJTCA. I agree that the redone classics are not as good as the originals, but they're not bad. The original songs done especially for the album are all pretty good, and the instrumentals are all uniformly excellent.
@@rightchordleadership you’re right, they are not bad. I think if I didn’t talk about Tull ad naseum on UA-cam and find myself constantly listening to them I might have found this perfectly pleasant. I played this again after a few days away from the band, while wrapping gifts actually, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Hope I didn’t come across too down on it.
I preordered and it was released on the 20th in the US. Scheduled to be delivered on the 24th. Appropriate for a Christmas album or in this case box set. Keeping up with my Tull reissue books which are excellent. Merry Christmas and happy New Year!
Just got it delivered and in great shape from Import CDs. I’ve had good luck buying from them on the Discogs site. The 1st CD sounds excellent, the original album. Now onto disc 2 with the new mix. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
Strongly disagree with you on "1st Snow at Christmas", a sweet song I think the vocal approach is perfect, actually an age-appropriate rendering of sweetness through a lens of regret..........got this the day it came out in 2003, finding it a little too busy and exhaustive by the end, spurring me to create what I ended up calling "The Jethro Tull Christmas Album Companion", using the 4 new originals but using all original recordings of the rest, as I strongly agree with you on the more energetic and heartfelt attitude found on the originals..........track listing as follows: 1. Birthday Card at Christmas 2.Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow 3.Ring Out Solstice Bells 4.Christmas Song 5.March, the Mad Scientist 6.Pan Dance 7.God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (live excerpt) 8.Another Christmas Song 9.First Snow on Brooklyn 10. Last Man at the Party 11.Weathercock 12.Fire at Midnight 13.Warm Sporran 14.Botanic Man 15.A Winter Snowscape Create one for yourself.......a truly warm and satisfying seasonal listen throughout, and to my ears anyway, the quintessential Tull Christmas album.............since your taking a few days off, try it out, as a fellow Tull superfan, I think you'd heartily agree!
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout I can't find any live footage of the band, nor any information about shows or singer NIDA. Were there any live shows so far? Also there is AI used in making videos and i was wondering if AI was used in making music as well maybe
@ hi ! As of the moment, we’ve never played live. Refestramus is a pandemic band, ie we started out sending our parts in but gradually we’ve started meeting and using real recording studios. Our first live gigs are planned for 2025 including a trip to the UK next November. Yes, AI is used in our videos. This is because the drummer / composer Derek works in software as a day job. It makes sense for him to explore that stuff, imo. I didn’t use any AI in the production or my recording of the music, he may have consulted ChatGPT on a lyric here or there but I don’t think it’s used in the creation of the actual music.
I’ve always enjoyed this album. Of course I don’t play it all the time but for a Christmas album it makes the grade. I just have a normal stereo setup so I don’t care about 5.1 and Atmos. I’ve got a hi-res version (I’m all digital) and it sounds pretty warm to me. Much better than the original release. I’ve been playing this album quite a bit these days along with other Christmas albums I have and it fits in just fine. It’s good stuff. Love it.
It is an album I usually only listen to at Christmas, and not every Christmas, but to me the new mix has brought some new life. I pretty much agree with your thoughts on the songs, so I won't elaborate more. I thought the stereo mix sounded good on vinyl, but then I listened to the surround mix tonight. I tried the DTS 5.1 as I don't have an Atmos decoder, but the drums sounded a little muffled. Disappointing. But I discovered my player (using the 7.1 analog outputs) decoded Atmos as Dolby 7.1, and the drums suddenly moved from the front out into the room and sounded much clearer! And yes, piano in A Winter Snowscape! OK, this won't improve the actual songs, but for me it's certainly a better audio experience. The video background could have done with a few photos, though. Do you think the McBride's was recorded only in stereo?
@@GeoffCB I had a lot better luck with it when I increased my back speakers by a couple of db. They seemed a little low on this release compared to some of the Wilson mixes. No biggie. Not sure if these St Brides gigs were recorded only in stereo, however the liner notes at least indicate that 2008 show was recorded on a Tascam 48 track machine. The 2006 show has less info, frustratingly. I think one thing this box could’ve used is maybe some notes from Soord explaining some of his mixing choices, including the choice to present the concerts in stereo. The fact that they are advertised as new mixes indicate to me that they were indeed multi track recordings. I’m a bit baffled !!!
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout Yes, I can imagine how good the St Brides gigs would sound with that church reverb. Of course they would have been recorded in multi-channel, Stereo is a strange choice. My Yamaha will do a church or hall effect, maybe I'll try. 😅
This release feels more of a cash-in than their other boxsets due to the lack of bonus material and dearth of info in the book. I particularly miss Mr Anderson's take on the individual songs and that period in Tull's history. Having said that, I love the new mix and live material so it's well worth buying. I really hope this isn't the last boxset in the series and we get a deluxe Under Wraps in 2025🤞🏻 Isn't there a new studio album in the works too?
@@terrywalker8446 Well, imo, this album always was a (to the tune of Taxi Grab), a “cash grab.” At least that was the intent, but evidentially it didn’t really sell particularly well on initial release. It’s been said that the next box will be Living in the Past, which I think could be a good one and it might be the topic of a future video. The liner notes of this Xmas box indicate Ian is indeed working on the next JTull album. It’s coming !
