The Christmas season and Tull - always a fine match. I have fond teen-aged memories of receiving Tull albums under the tree, and playing them daily for weeks after. For the past 20 holiday seasons, listening to my original CD of the Christmas Album has been a traditional highlight. Not a collector of box sets and I feel no urge to run out and purchase the remix of this already outstanding set of music performed by a sparkling Tull lineup. That is a FANTASTIC Christmas album by Jethro Tull! I just bought the "A Fresh Snow At Christmas" Lp only because I couldn't find the vinyl of the older edition. The mix isn't such a mind to me, they sound so similar so there is no difference issue to me. But anyway, I like the 1st and the 2nd edition. I bought for my daughter as a Christmas gift, she loves the album!🤘☮
The real surprise to me while watching this video was being reminded that the original version came out in 2003, I got my copy when it first came out but had no idea it was that long ago!

I'm sure there's a reason for the omission and I'd like to know what it is. I'll buy this new box set because I have bought every one of the others and I see no reason to stop, now but I'll keep my 2 disc set also, just to have the complete St. Brides track list.

That's a beautifully packaged set Barry. A lovely Christmas present for Tull fans. I'll wait for the deluxe box of my beloved Living in the Past which I hope to see some day. That'll be the one for me.
Don't know for sure, you can never tell with these things but I doubt there will be a Living in the Past set. Itself a compilation album, all tracks have been released on other deluxe sets on the albums for which the tracks were recorded originally and not released until Living in the Past, so the tracks have already been released in deluxe form although on separate albums. For example, Witches Promise and Teacher are in the Benefit deluxe edition. Other tracks are on Stand Up including live tracks and Aqualung What would be the point of pulling them back together for a deluxe LITP.?

Enjoyed listening to your thoughts on this album and the unboxing. I have owned the original on CD since 2003 and have always hoped for a vinyl release. This year sees my wish come true and indeed I pre-ordered the black vinyl version as soon as I heard of it`s release. In fact most of my favourite Christmas albums which I hoped to obtain on vinyl have finally been released on that format in recent years with this, Blackmore`s Night`s `Winter Carols` and a number of others almost completing my wish list. The only one outstanding I can think of is Cliff Richard`s `Cliff at Christmas` which was coincidentally also first released in 2003.
Glad this has a remix and I would like to hear the songs played more prominently than other Christmas ditties....... Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time... Here It is Merry Christmas.... etc.... 😝 👅 pphttth!
Thanks for sharing. I love that box set and have plans to purchase, but being the holidays and with family to buy for, I'm a little short on the funds. I'll listen to my original 2003 version for the time being.
Listen to the melody before the chorus on 'Birthday Card At Christmas' - sounds very reminiscent of another Christmas song - Greg Lake's 'I Believe in Father Christmas'.
On this release there are two readings missing from the original ‘Live At St Brides 2008’, one is ‘Ballad Of The Bread Man’ and the other one was read by Ian Anderson’s son in law Andrew Lincoln. Can anyone give any information on why these two tracks have been dropped from the new version?
Mine's coming soon but I couldn't wait so I watched your video 😅 Bit sad that the original cover doesn't seem to be represented anywhere in the package.
Nice review as always, Barry. I'll probably wait for the price to come down, but will get it eventually to round out the collection. Last Tull album with Martin, isn't it? Happy Christmas to all!
I'm not sure who's buying these lavish sets, but I guess it's a profitable endeavor. Does anyone know how many of the other Tull box sets have sold? This album was a nice treat overall way back when, but the original versions of all the re-recordings were much better than those on it. That said, at least Ian could pull off some 'singing' at that time, which would have helped his more recent albums.
Don't have a figure, but all the previous box sets have sold out and were reaching prices in the many hundreds on the second hand market until being reissued in recent years.
My deluxe package is already on the way from Burning Shed. 😊One is really missing out if you don't have at least a basic 5.1 system to listen to these box sets. I always buy the vinyl/LP to listen to the stereo mixes, so the CDs just languish!
Rockin the Broadsword tee, niiice 😎 One of my faves! Will definitely be playing this Christmas Day as I’m not a fan of the traditional or popular Christmas songs, Eugh.
Thanks for the review. I don't have the original and need this box to complete my complete series. I can't believe I picked up all of them in the last month. Some cheap, some not so much. The only one I had was the older THICK AS A BRICK, so I had to get the remixed version. Only complaint -- that AWFUL box for BROADSWORD AND THE BEAST, one of my favorite Tull albums. Trying to get the CDs out broke both of the spoke, and now I have to keep everything in separate sleeves. Whoever designed that stacked holder needs to spend a weekend in a stalled elevator with Aqualung. I wonder how many other people couldn't get their discs out of that godawfuj set without breaking the plastic.
Those holders really are annoying. I have the same design in the Manfred Mann's Earth Band book set "Odds & Sods" and there, one of the holders broke. Not so with Broadsword, but one of the discs had a little indentation at the point where it was jammed into the holder 😮
Finally a Blu-ray in the deluxe collection of JT's albums. I don't understand why they haven't always used the Blu-ray format instead of the DVD since the beginning of the deluxe boxes.
@@elportosurfbum1562 I don't think so. I prefer the BR for its higher audio quality in different formats, better quality of the possible videos it could contain, and for its storage capacity ( reducing the number of DVDs in a box set, and they wouldn't have the excuse of the number of discs to raise the price) and for supporting Dolby Atmos.
Some of the earlier ones do have blurays. I can't remember which ones, Aqualung I'm sure is one, but I have all the sets and I believe there may be one or two more.

Love the Christmas album personally but I’ve got the double disc version so this is of no use for me. If the blurays were videos of the concert I’d have bought it but I’m not interested in playing audio only on a bluray player when I can play the disc on my CD player. A cash grab I’d call it
I bought the original because the song 'a birthday card at Christmas ' reminded me of my daughter who was born on Christmas day. She was somewhat underwhelmed ( being 25 now). I soldiered on with the rest of the ablum and its grown on me, to the point it always get a play on Christmas eve. 😅 Won't be buying the box set though.
Good review, thank you, but I think I'll pass. I already have the 2008 double CD set with Christmas at St Bride's combined with the 2003 Jethro Tull Christmas Album, both of which get played regularly at this time of year. Despite the remix and the surround mixes, for me, this just feels like too much duplication.

Also, the last two years, these boxsets have doubled in price (not talking about secondhand prices on Discogs), but new. Remember the reissues before last Christmas. Bloody $50 or $60 each booklet, from $30 or maybe $40 two years ago. Besides the booklet, I have all these albums also as originals and all the reissues on vinyl (SW remixes). Don't you ever assume beforehand in the future, how you THINK people are, or does. Silly man.
I think I'll give this a miss as I have the original CD and I didn't like that. For me anything after Broadsword is not up to the brilliance of what came before.
Look, I'll be totally honest.. If I can find a 2/1 with this and Dylan's Christmas album I'll buy them! But I've also put both on around this time in years past and the wife & kids response was:"HELL NO! Play Brenda Lee!"😂😂
As much as I love Jethro Tull, this release really didn't deserve the deluxe box set treatment. It's a novelty at best and a crash grab at its absolutely worst!

C'mon Barry. Get surround sound. Yer missing out m8.
Barry, your introductory section was narrated at breakneck speed. Please calm down.
You cant get this on Spotify or streamed. The book is worth every penny alone. You can shove your clinical streamed online music, give me quality any day.....priceless.
The 2024 remix is on my Spotify.
Yeah but do you get the quality product as a whole package. Something to treasure and enjoy. Thats what I was getting at....streaming is a quick fix with no soul. Give me the full experience anyday. I will pay for quality.
@@samdemic3373 Yeah, who said I didn't buy physical? I just said it was available for me. He said you can't get this on Spotify or Streamed. You can, and it is high resolution too - if you set Spotify to correct settings.
Btw, I bought the LP yesterday. I just can't get a hold of the boxset, which I find weird.
@@samdemic3373 And to you again.. I have all the 17 or 18 or whatever quantity it is on my shelf. Probably only played once. I actually do not read these booklets, I find it boring and I am too restless. I grab the 5.1 DVD and that's it.
Have my copy now.Very dissapointed. He mixed out the band feeling out of it.Weathercock sounds empty to say the rhythm is gone also at Jack frost. If you have the old version avoid this.
Who in their right mind would want to buy a Jethro Tull Deluxe set Christmas album?
Middle aged men who love their 'lavish' Tull boxsets. Filled with images of Ian on stage gurning and prancing around with his flute, or gazing pensively from woodland across a lake. And an interview with the older austere curmudgeonly Anderson.
I would!
@@dkoukol Fair enough!
Obviouly You're not of Right Mind, Alan!!🤣
Me too!
I wrote off Tull when Ian Anderson wrote off Martin Barre. 🤔🗽
He doesnt need my cash.
Martin is on this
@@classicalbum But he not IN the band...I don't see YES or buy there stuff anymore either....I'm in NJ ..Jon Anderson still tours here...I'll see him.
I seen Martin Barre in a tiny theatre two years ago here in NJ.
I must go an see Martin's show
@@classicalbum A few English guys at the last few shows over the years here in N.J. (Jon Anderson) Take a flight over to see shows..life is too short to miss any at this point.🗽
You’ll get over it
How did this get past your daughter ?
Special ops
ZZZZZZZ
A bit poor, no big write up on history like the others and let's be honest, it's not a great album. It's another no from me, my grey pound will go on new music. Tull have had enough of my money over the years, enough now.
likewise for me.
I love the album, personally.
I think it’s a great listen.
I think you should talk for yourself, Stuart. I never heard it before, and it is actually great imo.
Your comment is more like a statement "it's not a great album". BS. That's YOUR opinion.
Listen to the instrumentals Pavan and A Winter Snowscape. They are mind blowing.
That’s a definite no for me.
I thought the same. But the songs ain't Christmas song covers, but original work. I got quite blown away by the music. Not typical Christmas music either.
I'll be giving this one a miss. Anything featuring Ian Anderson's later vocal problems just sounds awful to me.
Not too bad on here.
It's not a recent recording. It's from 2003, when Ian's voice (in my opinion) still held up well.
Ok.
@@tonyhonour665 I think for me it was all over voice wise from Crest of a Knave onwards. I find Ian's voice from those times really quite sad and difficult to listen to.
I don't mind it, it is really his recent releases that I struggle with
