Kaleb 100% agree with you. My son had big shoes to fill. Since he went to the same high school as I did and my picture still hangs on the wall of fame. He tried so hard in 3 sports to get a state title and couldn’t. I told him 99% of high school athletes lose their last game. So proud of him he was bigger, stronger, and smarter then I was but didn’t have my speed or the talent around him. Which is why I used to tell him play the game like it’s your last game because you might never play this organized game again. Greatest emotional movie if you played high school sports.
@@franksantos3418 that is very true. The Carter Cowboys may have gotten the golden football trophy but at least Permian got to the state championship game and went home with State Runner-Up

To some this looks silly, but to people who've played it is truly a powerful scene. You go your whole life up to that point playing football (from 6 years old to 18) with the same guys you've grown up with. Putting on pads has become part of who you are, and the guys you play with are as close as blood. And then, for most, it all comes to an end with one final high school game. One last time you get to put pads on, before having to let that part of yourself go forever. And in this case, making it as far as the championship game for the final act and then losing. Experiencing something that raw and emotional at such a young age just shows why football is great for kids. Strong mental and emotional development, maturity, tenacity. And this movie captures it beautifully
For me it was hockey. I’m Canadian, played in the high school provincial championship final in our home rink. Lost the game. Happened in 2019, and because of Covid, our highly anticipated team the next year didn’t even get the chance to compete for a championship as the season was cancelled one week prior. The 3rd year, my senior year, we had a team that would’ve won 110%, but again didn’t get the chance due to Covid. Still think about it every day as that game in 2019 would end up being the last time I’d have a chance of that happiness, and championship winning feeling, and i didn’t get to have that feeling because we lost. This clip just hits different for those reasons.
I cried after this scene. Against all odds a group of kids faced a team that was far better and managed to almost comeback and do the impossible with so much heart. Nothing but respect.

Well I hope 4 years later and you look back at the game and know you went out with a bang Im a sophomore in high school playing high school football and I can feel your comment bro
I play for the Rancho Mirage Rattlers. A town in the Coachella Valley in Southern California. We made it to the CIF Championships against a very good team, the Arroyo Knights. We lost 35-34. Any person that plays sports can relate how horrible it feels to lose such an important game, I felt that last year when we got beat in Championships, it hurt. This season however, we came back better than ever, we went to an undefeated season. We faced Arroyo once again in Round 2 of State Playoffs, it was at our home, we squashed Arroyo like a bug, 70-7 we made it to the State Champs, and took that title home. Yeah it hurt a lot losing last year, but with hard work, dedication, and support from your players, you'll be able to do it.
When Biliinglsey's Dad gives him the ring and Donnie starts bawling my eyes tear up everytime...i cri evrytiem lol no but this shows the passion of winning and losing in any sport
One of the most beautifully sad scenes I have ever seen. The greatest sports movie of all time which everyone that has played football should see. I played my first year of high school ball this year and I hope that in the years to come I maintain the passion I have for this game. I know I will forever remember coach Gaines' speech on being perfect and this final scene to my favorite sports movie and I hope you will too, fellow football players.
In all seriousness I agree coach Gaines “being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there, it’s not about winning, it’s about you and your relationship with your family your coaches and your friends. And you can look at them with clear eyes and love in your heart” that hits me because I play football myself. This is also my favorite sports movie
This scene reminds me of my final home game ever in high school. We lost a thriller for the district championship to a very good team and then did our senior walk across the field for the final time. Not a single one of us had dry eyes. Fortunately, our story had a happy ending: We played them again four weeks later in the state quarterfinals at DKR in Austin, won, and went on to win the state title.
@@evanfaust8672 Baker, love it. Congrats dude. Never came close to a state championship in my high school hockey years here in MN. Cant imagine the feeling.
This hits me very hard. My football team were playing in the semi-finals and we were the two seed. We went down 19-0 end of the fourth quarter. We nearly made a comeback but the final score was 19-12. Every sports player can relate to losing when you have everything you had.
I have had the opportunity to be an assistant coach in Oklahoma for the past 5 years. It has been a blessing that after every game - win, lose, or draw we pray with the other team at midfield. Helps puts things in perspective
Man this takes me back. Remember in 7th grade we made playoffs. Then won the semifinals in a intense game that went into the final seconds and we won. Went to the champion ship heading into the 2nd half down 21-0. Came back with 21-18 with 2 seconds left. We kicked a field goal that would’ve sent us to OT and was dead center but blocked. Man watching this scene hit me hard.
Dude, there ain't no 7th grade "State Championship". A lot of big cities have what they consider a city championship, based on regular season wins vs the other city teams. You know ole Al Bundy threw 4 touchdowns for his championship.
Ive always enjoyed the mirror of this scene. If Permian won "the good guys" theyd be the ones celebrating and we'd be happy "th bad guys" lost. But really there is no good/bad guys. That opposing team is full of the same type of kids and the same struggles
Except the actual Dallas Carter team cheated that year cause they had I think 2 ineligible players participating in the game. Idk which positions they played tho
This movie severely upset me when I first watched it and it still makes me tear up like no other. I can relate with the relationship between Don and his dad and understand the hurt you feel disappointing the man you look up too growing up. Every time I see Don’s dad walk down there to give him a hug and his state champ ring, it brings me to tears quicker than watching the end of Marley and Me. This ending had such a deep impact on me that I can’t even explain how important this film was to me. I still watch it whenever I feel a need to get all in my feels. Amazing film, will always be a favorite of mine.
I remember showing this movie to my dad, and as the QB was running to the end zone my dad was like “alright let me guess, they win? Big surprise! So stupid!” Man it was gratifying watching him realize he was wrong, and the moments that followed were so undeniably moving and well done, he had eat his words and admit this movie is amazing
I was lucky enough to play in college. The thing with high school fb is you grow up with your team, start playing organized football together when you’re 8 and continue for 11 years. Spend school years and summers working out and creating camaraderie and memories. It hits different
I never played in a big game like this. But my son has. It’s even more painful to see your hard working kid lose. It was hard for him and his teammates as well. We all felt the pain together. It was awful!
I remember being pissed at the end if this movie when my buddies and I saw it in theaters when it came out. Now that I'm a 34 year old adult...I understand it perfectly...Great movie.
My favorite scene is right before this in the huddle when the qb says "I-right wiggle 34 switchblade, for the state championship. I love all y'all, baby. I love all ya." After playing in a state championship game and losing, I realize our team lacked the heart and camaraderie that this team had. Something I envy. Gives me chills.

You have had to play football to understand how hard this scene actually hits. It’s not just a game lost it’s the end of a chapter and a last that they will never get back. The last time they will play with those teammates and have a bond like that. It’s over in the blink of an eye. Man what I would give to go back for one more night
This how I felt after my schools rivalry game which was our second to last game and also happened to fall on senior night, I broke down when I got home because this was us seniors last chance to beat our rival.
You ever wanna dislike something because it hits you in such a negative way but cant because the biproduct(this movie) shows that life is just life sometimes and it sucks so you like it cause this movie is real and not some fake happy ending
Broke my ribs on the final play to go to the playoffs my senior year, game was an absolute shootout and we lost 51-47 😔 and 5 years later that loss still hits me in the gut, and although I've seen this movie before but I never thought we'd have more of a moment like this at the end of the game, and now this movie is a call back to that game, man that was a rough season, many starters went down, but we wanted the playoffs so bad because our school had not seen the playoffs in 14 years and we almost went, 33 yard line in their territory I threw the block and dude goes in with his shoulder pads and there goes 3 ribs of mine and QB2 throws up a prayer to the endzone to no avail and we finished the season 7-5 😔
Despite not being a huge football fan I decided to read Friday Night Lights on a whim. My expectations were low and I honestly didn’t know if I’d even read until the end. Finished the book in just under four days, could not put it down. Surprisingly, it really hit me on an emotional level, particularly Boobie’s outcome. I felt awful for him and can only imagine what it would feel like to have your dream die at such a young age. On a personal level, I could relate to the idea that for many of the players high school football would be the highest point of their lives. They were blessed to be a part of it, cursed by the subsequent memories and longing to revisit that brief but spectacular window of time. I’ve struggled with this in my life as well, only instead of football it’s my time as an active duty U.S. Marine. Despite leaving active and achieving much in my life, I can’t help but sometimes feel hollow on the inside, like a part of my soul is missing. A piece of my identity. Anywho, just figured I’d offer my two cents. Haven’t seen the movie yet but will have to check it out.
Several West Texas teams were tough opponents and Permiam was always known to be tough. I played in the same district as Carter and they were good in 1970 but we came away with a 13 to 0 victory. We stopped their star halfback. We were also the smallest school in the district. Oak Cliff had several schools with good teams. More than once after a heated contest I've seen tears in some tough players eyes.
I never imagined i would get this feeling. Any football player who knows that after high school they wont play anymore football forever had the emotions in this video. Our homecoming game was for the league title we beat that team in a hard fought game. We got seeded 3rd in playoffs and that same team we beat homecoming was our opponent. It was our last home game and it ended like this video also 😣. Our qb threw the ball to try to tie the game up with 0 left on the clock and we couldn’t score. It sucked so much becuz that was the last time i will ever play football again. To everyone that gets on to play in the next level take advantage becuz I truly wish i could put those pads on one more time but i know i will never again
Jonny Rodder go buy some pads and a helmet and go to your local schools field and stand on the 50. It’s an unreal feeling. Put those pads on again, my friend, it doesn’t have to be the last time
I've always wondered what "losing a championship at the 1 yard line feels like". Even at the highest level, with the highest coaching, I'll never forget being a St.Louis rams fan and hearing from Jeff Fisher in the year 2012, 13 years later is when Jeff fisher the coach of the Tennessee Titans watched for the first time his team losing at the 1 yard line in the super bowl. At that time he had just became the head coach of the rams, his only comment was he didn't want to see it. Has to be the most gut wrenching feeling in the world, I don't even know what to compare it to. Especially in football.
I never noticed until recently that at about 0:39 into this clip, Mike Winchell (Lucas Black) gets his head pushed onto the turf by a Carter defensive player. I always thought he dropped his head in frustration after realizing he hadn't scored. God damn... talk about adding insult to injury. That said, this is easily one of the best sports movies ever made, if not arguably THE best.
@@jacobdowney318 Carter was a complete villain in the movie. They got away with shoving players down after the play and kicking Winchell’s helmet in his face. It’s not surprising that they would shove Winchell’s head down after the game was over. In real life Carter wasn’t a dirty playing team, but they were as cocky and arrogant as you can imagine. They were talented, but were fueled by tremendous egos.
Hear me out.. This isn't just about Texas football, this is based off a book, the same author wrote a book about Minnesota Hockey with Bloomington Jefferson. I went through the same shit in hockey in Minnesota, the same damn thing. Indiana Basketball, Minnesota Hockey, Texas Football, this scene is extraordinary in so many ways. It captures something we went through. The struggles, pressure, expectations. The only ones you relied on are the best friends next to you, the only ones who can understand. People say high school is worthless, but that's just a bunch of bullshit. My hockey teammates are still my best friends 8 years later and we still talk about the days in the past whenever we're together. This scene is priceless in so many ways.
Never played football, but my high schools football team lost the state championship game my senior year, and I felt the pain of my classmates that day. I still feel it when I watch this.
this scene makes me tear up every...single..time. If you've played high school football in Texas you know there will never be another movie that captures the emotion of Texas hs football like this one. Incredible film.
We were one game from the play offs and we lost by 3 points and we had to make 4 more yards to win seeing this scene brought back all the pain we felt after the game
This movie came out right before I went to high school. It made you wanna play football in high school & where I went has a very rich tradition in SC. Seeing this brings back so many memories it is unbelievable
This scene hit hard because I hard depression during high school. I took it personal on the field. My teammates were me remedy. One of them being my best friend until this day. And when billingsly’s dad walked onto the field to hug him, it reminded me when my dad and I were close once upon a time. Nostalgia, delicate but potent. Keep those feet moving boys...
Every athlete and fan knows how a heart breaking loss in the last second feels. This scene sums it up perfectly. This is how I was feeling during the Alabama and Clemson game in 2016. Clemson scored that last second touchdown.

Just Another Random Guy was this the 2017 season?
OmNi Knight yeah
I'm not crying, my face is raining.
When Biliinglsey's Dad gives him the ring and Donnie starts bawling my eyes tear up everytime...i cri evrytiem lol no but this shows the passion of winning and losing in any sport
Yeah them losing the game put a lump in my throat but what tim McGraw did, Just, wow, that’s freaking beautiful man.
This, THIS is what makes FNL stand out from a lot of sports films and that’s what makes it special
*****
I feel ya, that sucks
No, Rocky is the best sports movie ever
It's been 8 years now, how the contract looking for the Pros?? ;)
Fortunately, our story had a happy ending:
We played them again four weeks later in the state quarterfinals at DKR in Austin, won, and went on to win the state title.
Suuuure you did

Explosions in the Sky is probably one of the best movie composers out there, where they can really hit you in the feels. Also a great band.
You never realize how fun it is until it’s over. I’ll forever remember the glory days.
Haven’t cried this hard in a movie I’m so long:( losing a game always hurt the most
This hits me very hard.
Helps puts things in perspective
such a heart breaking scene. it just shows how hard life can be. great movie.
Lmao there ain’t no such thing as seventh grade state “championship”

Losing never looked so remarkable...
Love Friday Night Lights!! brings back ol memories of high school
Dboy D bro 😥 I feel you
This movie severely upset me when I first watched it and it still makes me tear up like no other.
Well said.
I love all ya."
After playing in a state championship game and losing, I realize our team lacked the heart and camaraderie that this team had. Something I envy. Gives me chills.

That little music swell when he gives his son the ring makes me get goosebumps every single time I watch this.
for some reason the panther mascot putting his hand on the cheerleader cracks me up everytime.
Comic relief.
This movie is still awesome after so many years. My favorite sports movie BY A MILE.
That moment with Billingsly and his father never fails to make me cry.
I play football and im going to this high school when I get older too which is crazy.
You have had to play football to understand how hard this scene actually hits. It’s not just a game lost it’s the end of a chapter and a last that they will never get back. The last time they will play with those teammates and have a bond like that. It’s over in the blink of an eye. Man what I would give to go back for one more night
Just one more snap
The scene where his Dad gives him his ring has no dialogue but says a million things about him and his Dad...
“I love all yawl, I love all yawl baby” - Mike Winchell
Awesome Clip....Gets me every time. But... 2:01 LOL the cat!!!!! LMAO hahahahahaha!
The scene itself aside.... what an incredible soundtrack. The music throughout the whole movie makes it so much better and more engaging.
Don Billingsley played his ass off and his father gave him his championship ring awesome scene.
When he ran over the Dallas defense like that seen he want his father know he a hard player…
Well written man. Hope you’re doing well.
Put those pads on again, my friend, it doesn’t have to be the last time
Why didn't you play football in college
@@PhotonBread whats that like
I've always wondered what "losing a championship at the 1 yard line feels like".
Jack Narcotta oh my gosh. if you hadn't pointed that out I wouldn't have noticed!!
The way I'm thinking wouldn't that be unsportsmanlike like conduct?
Jacob Downey no way the ref could see that and the movie was just trying to make u even sadder about the loss
@@jacobdowney318true that was the 80s so they probably didn’t had a rule for that. Plus it was the end of the game so the ref so ref didn’t care…
Watching in 2024 and it still makes me tear up when dad gives him the ring
+petey1214 It's called "Blades of Glory" by the amazing, John Rosengren.

The one thing that hurts when it comes to big championship games is that there always has to be someone who loses
That's exactly how I felt when we lost in the semi-finals yesterday
Never played football, but my high schools football team lost the state championship game my senior year, and I felt the pain of my classmates that day. I still feel it when I watch this.
One the best scenes ever.
1:51 I can see me and my buddies sitting on the field together after everything was said and done with, some of the best memories.
Always hope he gets in the end zone when I watch this movie
this scene makes me tear up every...single..time. If you've played high school football in Texas you know there will never be another movie that captures the emotion of Texas hs football like this one. Incredible film.
Came here again after My Niners lost last night.
You’re not alone.
I saw this in the theater the day it opened back In 2004. It’s still as good every time I watch as it was then.

When he gave him his State Title ring...no words. Best moment of the movie.
I can't handle the guitar
Good thing they hired someone who could, then.
When billingsley hugged his father and was given the ring. 😢
I actually go to this highschool it's like the towns movie if u didn't see it u weren't raised here
I still haven't been able to watch this scene without crying. Hits me every time 😢
This scene hit hard because I hard depression during high school. I took it personal on the field. My teammates were me remedy. One of them being my best friend until this day. And when billingsly’s dad walked onto the field to hug him, it reminded me when my dad and I were close once upon a time. Nostalgia, delicate but potent. Keep those feet moving boys...
Hey Barracuda be perfect🫡
I was born and raised 30 minutes away from Odessa tx and man trust me this movie, plays, and feel is in the hearts of every ball player here.
Every athlete and fan knows how a heart breaking loss in the last second feels. This scene sums it up perfectly. This is how I was feeling during the Alabama and Clemson game in 2016. Clemson scored that last second touchdown.
You fall down get back up and try again. Never give up especially having potential dreams you want to accomplish in life everything happens for a reason you win some and you lose some
