- Four feet wide and carried five above the ground by a seemingly endless series of stanchions, the Alaska Pipeline is, for most of its 800-mile route, the only mark humanity has made on the pristine wilderness of this last frontier. The only mark, that is, except for the road that accompanies the pipeline on its long journey south from the Artic outpost of Prudhoe Bay to Valdez.
For born and bred Alaskan Lael Wilcox, this lonely road has always held a special interest. In fact, she’s ridden most of it before. But this time she’s back with a new challenge to set a Fastest Known Time, or FKT, for the route and bring a new source of energy to the road. By pushing herself, she hopes to encourage other riders, wherever they live and however long they’ve been riding, to do the same.
But this is a record attempt not a race, so Lael’s number one adjective is to have fun. All you have to do is show up with what you have, ride with all your heart and see how it goes. Oh, and you need to eat like it’s your job! Created by an all-female crew, tune into this latest episode of Rapha Gone Racing to find out how Lael got on in the Alaskan wilderness and whether the rumours that she is quicker than crude oil are actually true.

Lael is a gem on a normal day - when she is smoked and in and out of a sleep-deprived delirious state, she is an absolute treasure. 😝 ❤️ 🥰

Lael is such an ultra cycling rockstar! What's more, I'm impressed with how much energy she can give to her fans out on the road even though she must be incredibly tired. At over 200 miles a day on average in challenging conditions, self-supported (eating hot dogs!), is nothing short of amazing! Well done on the edit. It had a very nice documentary style progression. Looking forward to more of Lael's FKT's.

I have ridden the Dalton highway from Fairbanks to Deadhorse about 20 years ago. It was SO HARD. I have massive respect for her endurance and perseverance.

That kid with the sign and the chocolate bar reminds me of a Paris-Roubaix themed event I did, with mud and rain to suit. At the end of a gravel sector there was a family waiting, and a five year old kid handing out flapjack.

I can attest to the fact the Alaskans are willing to help out others: I rode to AK back in 1992 up from Los Angeles. I hit a couple of destinations such as Homer, Valdez, etc. Awesome place. Once I made it to Fairbanks, I decided to go up to Prudhoe Bay. Unfortunately I ended up with a terrible tooth ache in the middle of nowhere, somewhere south of the Yukon. A local gave me a ride all the way back to Fairbanks. It was on his way; nevertheless he helped out a stranger in need.

So amazing. Drove this in 2019 up to Coldfoot then turned around due to time. Had already driven the Dempster up to Tuktoyuktuk and THAT was amazing. I would definitely love to go back and bike either. Such a beautiful area. Loved Alaska.
