Rapha Gone Racing - Cape Epic 2021

- Welcome to the world’s toughest mountain bike race. Over seven stages and a prologue, on sinuous single track and dusty farm roads, under glaring South African sun and the odd sudden downpour, the Cape Epic always crowns a worthy winner. Two, in fact, since riders race in pairs. But we know all this… We’ve been here before, and 18 months after the pandemic put paid to our first appearance at the Cape Epic, Rapha Gone Racing returns for a second attempt. But so much has changed since last time. For a start, none of Lachlan Morton’s regular teammates could make it to this race so the team has reached out for reinforcements. And in Kenya’s Kenneth Karaya, they’ve uncovered a gem. This will be the biggest race of his life so far but in Lachlan Morton, he has the perfect partner for keeping things in perspective. After all, racing is never all about results. Tune into Rapha Gone Racing from the Cape Epic to find out how they fared.

I hope we see more of Kenneth working with EF. He's got a good soul and we need to celebrate people like him in the cycling community.
100% agree. A few episodes / mini-docs when that school in Kenya is ready. That would be great.
@@Tjandizzlebeatz for sure!
Agree. This is a huge opportunity that shouldn't be missed.
Lachlan teaches us all how to enjoy life and discover our simple gifts. The experience has more value than the result. We can change the world at the grass roots level. Great effort Kenneth! Another superb Rapha adventure.
Totally agree with you.
And its just nice to watch Lachlan as a still grounded and sympathic Person doing Things he love and EF/Rapha even giving Kenneth as a definately Not as privilaged person as for example us europeans, the opportunity to participate in this race.
The experience has more value than the result. ⚡️
I always think I’m not competitive anymore. Until I am.
Am Kenyan, and a cycling enthusiast living in Europe who visits my home country as often as I can yearly. The passion , the spirit, the love and drive the small but quickly growing cycling community in Kenya will fully embrace the idea of Lachlan and Kenneth cycling school. Kenyans, Suleiman Kangangi and Salim Kipkemboi, even Kenyan born Chris Froome , all champions in there own rights, all put had work and dedication with not many resources at the beginning of there cycling careers. Imagine what a grass roots Cycling School would do for poverty, education, hope and the chance and dreams for so many more Kenyan children to one day also be champions and inspire the next generation of African Cycling. I hope we see more of Kenneth working with EF. He's got a good soul
So crazy that Alex breaking his finger has now gotten the ball rolling on a cycling school in Kenya! All because of that tree which didn’t want to move, life’s sequences can really be an amazing thing.
For sure. Neat way to look at it. Maybe that immoveable tree in Colorado knew of a tree cousin in Kenya that wished to be part of something special. I like to think that tree is on the property purchased by Kenneth and Lochlan.
Well done Kenneth, for stepping up in such hard circumstances.
Well done Lachy, for being the unassuming hero you are to aspiring cyclists and people everywhere.
Well done EF for being the glue that keeps it all together.
This has to be he most inspiring cycling film ever. Cycling brands, teams and organizations can really learn something from this powerful piece. I hope they are paying attention!
Absolutely agree with you, this is what the cycling community is all about.
This was epic. The name of the team says it all Education First. The minute you see Kenneth's face you love him already, you want that guy to be your friend. It was cool seeing Lachlan and Kenneth really learning in the moment from each other. Kenneth probably learned a years worth of riding being around all those professionals. Great opportunity for everyone. Love it.
Well said!
Lachlan is like a very thin Budah with the wisdom of cycling dispensed in language the average cyclist gets and loves. Kenneth has to be strong to stay on Lachy's wheel. Great job and I am glad to watch you ride for you, your family and village. Thanks Rapha and EF for these glimpses into your world.
This just certified how much of legend Lachlan is👌🏻 awesome vlog could have watched for hours
Lachlan is a true ambassador for all types of cycling. His attitude is top notch. Kenneth had his work cut out, a great representative for his country. Nice video.
He's special, that's for sure.
Such amazing perspective from Lachy. He's an amazing ambassador to the sport as well as EF and Rapha putting together this kind of content. All the best wishes to Kenneth and Lachlan in their school in Kenya. Thanks for this :)
Thank you Lachlan for reaching out to a newbie rider and featuring Kenneth as a Kenyan rider. The cyclist space needs more inclusivity and diversity to show the breathe and scope of how a bicycle can transform lives. Beautiful film.
Kenneth is anything but a newbie rider. He and a select few dominate the Kenyan cycling scene, despite his immense humility. He came 17th in the Haute Route Dolomites this year and is incredibly accomplished on the bike. Only 0.01% of cyclists would be able to finish the 8 days of the ABSA Cape Epic, let alone race it each day. Combine that with Kenneth not getting to do any Epic specific training in prep for the race due to the late invite, when competitors would be doing Epic specific training for 3 to 6 months and they still came 35th out of 247 teams that finished (and many that didn't). Hats off to Lachy and Kenneth, brilliant on so many levels.
@@warrickstewart6144 agree he’s not a newbie, and certainly much stronger than your average rider, but it’s a fair point given there are far stronger guys out there that Lachie could have chosen to field a more competitive team so…
Finally an EPIC from Rapha worthy of the word - you can keep your glorious suffering. This film is the essence of cycling; community, friendship, positive change. And Lachlan is fast becoming someone on my 'special list' (and there aren't many :O) …thank you for this film.
Absolutely outstanding film well done to all involved & Kenneth you are very welcome to come to Scotland anytime you feel :-)👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🍺
everytime I think I have seen the best Rapha Films has offer, they out do themselves. More Kenneth, please and thank you.
Lachlan Morton, a true hero. more people need to listen to what this guys says. Good luck with Kenneth and the project. A great short film.
That was beautifully done.
Another great video. I enjoy the alternative Calendar so much more than normal road racing now. Every time I see a film with Lachlan in I like him more. He comes over a a great person who genuinely cares about people.
KEEP THESE ALT VIDEOS COMING LACHLAN!!! You are inspiring the world to ride bikes.
What a great film. Gotta love Kenneth's determination and vibe. Just a genuine human being. Thanks EF, again, for creating a film everyone can learn something from.
God bless you Lachlan, Ken and EF …. It’s not always about winning …. It’s also making the world better and more equal. Asante sana, Karibu Kenya!
Lachlan is a proper decent bloke. Properly in it to leave the industry a better place and with greater opportunity than he found it. Best of luck to Kenneth. What an amazing chap!
The absolute best video of the Cape Epic and the most meaningful one as well. Greatest measure of success is did one make a positive difference. The alt tour and all the people involved with it make a huge difference in so many peoples lives. Not only every sponsors dream but every cyclists dream to just be able to identify with other humble and respectful cyclists, with no egos or altering agendas. Well done Lachlan, Kenneth and all the alt tour team and sponsors, you guys set the benchmark and just keep raising it.
Always learn something valuable from these vids. Lachlan and Kenneth are legends
Lachlan is such an inspiration. Firm hand shakes all around
Watched film again loved it even great job all around keep it up👍
Beautiful as ever. Lachlan is a gift to the cycling industry. He'd be happy and free riding a 40 year old $15 charabanc.
Rapha and company...you guys ABSOLUTELY ROCK with these movies. Brilliant! Lachlan is at the top of the elite in mind, body, and spirit. Winning a race is not half as inspiring as winning at life. Both these men are winners. A huge cheers on this one guys.
More like this EF & Rapha. Bravo!
Excellent video Lachlan, Kenneth and Rapha. Lachlan, I’m so inspired by your thoughtful reflections in all your videos, never more so than in this one. You are a gift to cycling and I applaud your vision for the future of cycling in Kenya. I wish you and Kenneth the very best of luck to going forward.
Lachlan, you’re a real inspiration to us all
What an inspiration! Continue to think big Kenneth! Well done Lachlan!
Beautiful just beautiful, of all the world tour pro's Lachlan is by far the best one for this, his whole ideology of life and cycling was made for such a dream. I really hope some good comes from this partnership!!
Lachlan was a hero anyway, now Kenneth is right up there too.
What a great short film that was.
Amazing to see that the twist of fate, leaving Lachlan searching for a new partner, ended up with something so beautiful!
You're all making a big difference to the world through cycling, bless you all 🙌🏻
Impressive documentary about and incredible race,… and a yet more inspiring story!
What a fantastic story, as always. Love Lachlan, Kenneth, the Alt Tour and I can’t wait to hear more about how we can support their new school.
Every video is better than the previous. You all are truly finding your stride and using this platform to transcend cycling (something I sincerely love) and create content that truly matters. Thank you.
Great story about the universal love of cycling.
Bikes can truly change the world. Bravo Lachy, Kenneth and Rapha. Bravo.
It was great having you guys in SA and seeing you tackle the Cape Epic. So chuffed that I finally got to meet Gus as well, even if it we could only chat for a few minutes, out in the bush, while he was setting up for a shot of you guys. Well done on a great documentary, you guys might not have won the race but you won over many hearts to EF Education and to this great sport we love 👊🏼🙌🏼👍🏼 Kenneth, you rode like a champ, don’t give up your dream brother, success is just over the next hill 🙌🏼
Well done Karaya. We are rooting for you back home. An inspiration to us all. Thank you Lachlan for the role you played as you reignited the fire karaya once had for mountain biking. This was beautiful to watch 💥💥🥰🥰
Came for Lachy, stayed for Kenneth. Very nicely done EF!
Beautiful. Be grateful for what you have.
Hope to see more of Lachlan and Kenneth! Beautiful film, truly inspiring and heartwarming.
wow. I knew I loved Lachy for a reason. We need more of this. What an amazing video. Made my year !!!
Another outstanding video from Lachlan!! a great human :) Best wishes from New Zealand
EF and Rapha , Lachlan and the team, have come up with a wonderful formula to promote the team and sponsors !
Mega. Proud Zimbabwean/South African loving this content
Lacey's comments at the end. Very well said.
So happy I watched this, thank-you. Fantastic outcome which I hope goes a very long way.
By not focusing on results the spirit of cycling and how it can mean so much more than those results. Kudos Lachlan, Kenneth an EF! Best pro cycling team ever as far as I’m concerned 🙌
This is a beautiful made film. Congratulations Lachlan, Kenneth and Team EF. We hope to see Lachlan in Kenya. We wish your new enterprise the very best of success.
This is SO AWESOME! 👌🏾👌🏾 When I saw our hometown hero Kenneth I was literally cheering on the couch! Then to see at the end that Lachlan & him are collaborating to start a cycling school here in Kenya was just the icing on the cake 👌🏾👌🏾.
I thoroughly enjoyed this collaboration… Kenneth is such an inspiration. Cheers, Lachlan and EF.
That is amazing! I would consider the possibility of selling almost everything I own to move there and work at their cycling school. It would be a major culture shock, but I imagine it might also be as life affirming as it is life changing.
Absolutely a great a great video! it proves it's not always about results but what you get out of the experience ! And this was a hec of an experience. Well done gentleman!
Really inspirational to watch! Well done to Kenneth and Lachlan
This is the best Rapha Cone Racing to date. Bravo!
Awesome! Thank you Rapha, Lachlan and Kenneth!
Struggle is real, thanks for bringing your exposure to SA and African cycling
EF and Lachlan leading by example 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great Story!!! Hope Rapha and EF continue to support Kenneth and building a bigger cycling community in Kenya!!
Another amazing one but this one was special. Thank you guys!
Such a great story. Thank you for sharing.
Legend's awesome work EF and the crew for making this happen and more then just a standard road racing team.
Gives me goosebumps watching this film,
Planting seeds all over. Love it all!
Respect to EF-Nippo and of course Lachlan / Kenneth 1-2 punch!
Inspirational.... you won in SO many more ways than you would have in finishing first....
The thing is that it WILL make cycling faster... It may take some time, but I fully expect to see a Kenyan team bossing mountain stages, in grand tours, in the not too distant future....
Awesome! That is the greatest motivation to get out there and spread the 2 wheel love. Keep up the greatness EF!
BEAUTIFUL. Thank you, i loved it.
I was watching this thinking
this is underwhelming but by the end I had goosebumps. Nice job whoever put this together. It played out beautifully.
Love your films every time I see you drop a video I am exciting and you guys didn’t disappoint. Inspiring, connecting stories and people and cinematic bravo!
amazing video. This is the spirit of races and mtb. Thank you that I can also be part of it.
Lachlan is the most engaging and interesting rider in the Pro Peleton and good on EF for giving other lesser know riders opertunities. It would be good to see more of Keneth and the project he and Lachlan have in Kenya.
Beautiful ride, congrats gentlemen
what a beautiful story, bravo! 🖤
Fantastic message, and expertly filmed and edited. It’s about more than racing and winning. You got to have fun while you’re doing it
Very nice and inspiring video! I want to ride my bike now !
Such an inspiring human in Kenneth.
I really like Lachlan's sentiment at the end. So much of pro cycling's money over the years has gone on performance, so much to dopers as a result, its good to see even a fraction to developing cycling communities.
Lachan, what a legend... Thanks for share Rapha. It was really good. #dreambig #thinkbig
Watching this journey unfold through SM I felt disappointed when Alex couldn't race, especially after last years scratching of CE. I could see how frustrating that would be for Lachy and his competitive nature, I was gunning for EF to stick it to the MTB guys.
Also watching this and SM highlights, seeing the positive influence EF had on the CE totally shifted my perspective. I hope EF does more of this it's awesome for the community.
14:45 epic chase by the camera operator. Bravo.
The "Small MTB Stage Race" Alex high-fived a tree at was the Pikes Peak Apex, my hometown race. I heard about your hand and the incident on stage 4. Damn bummer you couldn't race the Cape Epic!
man the quality of these videos is just improving every time
Simply fantastic!
LOOOOOOVED THIS!! Lachlan you are one special human being, and so great getting to know Kenneth this way. Just awesome!
This is absolutely amazing and inspiring. Inclusion matters more than going faster. Thank you, Lachlan and EF for doing your share to make the world a better place!
I Hope we will se more of Kenneth!
Simply fantastic. Bravo!
I realise when I was racing for me it not always about trying to win it’s about enjoyment on the bike 😊😊love to ride with these guys some day great ride 😊😊
that's the best possible outcome... way to go Lach and Kenny!
Lachlan is a great ambassador for the sport.
Love what you guys are doing with the brand, it’s made me buy my first road bike at 54, a caad13 105, and I love it, sold my scalpel just before the first covid, and could not find another one at the time and brought a specialized epic expert, I love the diversity cannondale and specialized a job well done guys 👊🏾
Absolutely briliant doco. Hope to see you guys back at the epic...
Damn! Best one yet!
Lachlan and EF are making cycling great again, this was one of the best cycling films I've seen in a while! Kenneth is going to do great things as well!
Lachlan is a legend.
If the sport didn’t only focused on getting faster, and selling bikes that cost more than the average cost of a car even in Europe, not even talking about a country like Kenya, if the sport knew when to be all about racing and when to help build communities, we would have more pro or retired pro riders like Lachlan, giving opportunities, to me he truly feels like a legend. Because the pro peloton in each discipline cross country, road or cyclocross don’t allow themselves to show their personalities because the sport has always been that way, a rider like Lachlan is way more relatable, he doesn’t feel like a robot who does his 100k daily, race and never tries to do any side project to make the sport more fun. It has already been done with enduro and downhill and some riders like Sagan are fun, it’s all it will take, oh and if riders could start living from their sport without fears of retiring at the first injury that would be great but we can’t have it all can we.
The experience is the result-and the result is boundless and sweet. This feels right. Keep at it.
