      Sorry, Ed. I see that my comment didn't come across in the way that I intended. I laughed because it was, even though unintentional, a brilliant comedy piece. Have you watched it back? Man, it's funny. I've watched it a few times since and it still makes me laugh. I meant absolutely no offence to you but I thank you for the chuckles, and I mean that in a nice way.

      Hahaha! That was me 5-6 years ago! I even broke some globes by being a butterfingers. Now that I have 150+ kerosene lanterns, lamps, and pressure lanterns, I can overhaul them, fill them, and light them like a Marine can disassemble and reassemble an M16 in pitch dark. Here are a few helpful hints. Grab a donut and coffee first:
      Use the bail in one hand and use your middle finger to lift the loop on the chimney to tilt the globe out. Be sure the globe is DOWN, not raised by the side lever. See, your middle finger can be used for things other than driving.
      Twist the burner out ...1/16 turn! and remove it from the fuel font to replace the wick....IF you ever need to. Put the new wick in from the bottom, screw it out of the top by 4'' and dip the whole thing into the fuel font. Replace the burner and roll the wick down to 1/8'' above the wick guide to light it. Long nosed butane BBQ lighters are the most convenient to use. No need to soak a new wick for 30 minutes like this. Dip, install the burner, then light.
      NEVER mix fuels. Doing so will most likely clog the wick and reduce the capillary action necessary to feed the flame. I prefer the $10 a gallon Klean Heat from Home Depot. It has the least amount of odor when the lantern is used indoors. K-1 kerosene also works very well but smells. Tiki torch oil, citronella, paraffin oil, perfumed oil, diesel fuel all work to some degree but mixing them will clog the wick for sure. Olive oil belongs on your salad, not in your lantern.
      A clogged wick will make a strange flame shape, it may flicker, it might get smoky spikes on the sides, it will need adjustment every 20 minutes as the flame and light output will die down. The wick will form hard carbon nodules on it or it might show a burnt tip that shrunk down from the 1/2'' unburned wick width. Clogged wicks are troublesome. They might look OK but the capillary feeding action is ruined. Just install a new wick, flush out the old fuel and fill with the good fuel and hardly ever worry about the wick.
      I have burned a Dietz No. 100 lantern with its 1/2'' wick for 36 hours straight using Klean Heat without touching the wick raiser. The No. 100 designated that it can burn 100 hours on a tank of fuel....to mark 1950's construction zones. It will burn unsupervised for many hours with clean fuel and with the wick at medium flame setting.
      I trim most wicks straight across with sharp scissors, then nip the corners slightly at a 45 degree angle. In a pinch, you can get away with rolling the burnt tip of the wick in your fingers to knock crust off. I have a 1912 Deitz D-Lite top lift lantern that has an ancient wick decades old. I chose to keep it as original as possible and probably only used up 1'' of wick mostly by trimming over the last 5 years. A wick burning proper fuel can last for years. If the lantern runs out of fuel it will char more off the wick end. No big deal.
      I use Weiman Glass Cooktop Stove Cleaner to clean cold globes. It leaves no residue or greasy streaks or fogginess after the glass gets hot. The glass will really get polished with this stuff. Brawney paper towels let you see the gunk left over on the inside of a dirty globe.
      To extinguish my lanterns, I roll the wick down until the flame is almost out. Then I gently shake the lantern and it will puff out. Storing it with the wick very low and inside the guide lets the fuel stay fresher over a year or more as it does not evaporate much. I have my favorite 20 lanterns stored in plastic deck boxes in the hot sun. Some lanterns might get lit over a year later after sitting in the box. They light and burn with no trouble.
      I got 2 Deitz red globed Monarch 1940's railroad lanterns as a gift 6 years ago. Its a lot of fun restoring these antiques and having them light my roof deck on nice evenings. But I got a case of new Wallyworld lanterns like yours for the neighbors in case the lights go out for days.

    LOL, That brought back memories of me filling my oil lamps this year. Haven't used them in about a decade so I was out of practice and didn't think so things through because I was in a hurry when filling them. Remember to open it up away from the fuel cap side and it opens all the way up easier.

    Hopefully you've learned a lot since making this video. Some commenters are exactly on point and others have no clue. The lever on the side is only for raising the globe base to light the wick. If you place the bail (carry handle) straight up and place the palm of your hand on the bail you can pull up on the small loop on top of the chimney and use your other hand to pivot the globe. A properly trimmed wick that is never allowed to run dry should last a very long time with only occasionally needing to trim the wick again. Others have commented on how to pour from the container and not to have the wick too high. If you light it with just 1/16 inch of wick sticking out of the burner tube (not the cone) it shouldn't soot when you light it. Kerosene can sour easily. Keep it in original container as much as possible out of sunlight and as cool as possible. If it turns yellow it will not make a good flame and will smell horrible. The Dietz lanterns, as someone stated, are superior and some come with larger burners if you have any interest. The Junior model ($11.00 through Walmart) has a 5/8 burner and the Blizzard ($15.00) a 7/8 burner with substantial fuel reservoir. Those are just two examples that happen to be very low priced. They ship from Lehman's and there is a modest shipping charge but no sales tax. Any of this type lantern will leak if over filled. Never use anything but the recommended fuel.

    i don't know why I always removed the burner and put in the wick from bottom up all these years. glad I watched this vid because it's easier and faster to load it from top like you did!
    wanted to mention that it's easier to lift the top chimney if you grip the carry handle in its upright position and reach down with thumb to lift the chimney ring and lift up.

    • @cphank3722
      @cphank3722 Рік тому

      Removing the burner is useful for emptying and thorough cleaning. Also, sometimes these leak around the bottom seam. Thoroughly cleaning and drying, then adding just enough liquid epoxy to cover the bottom will fix a leak. After the epoxy has cured completely, reassemble the burner, globe, and refuel. A turkey baster works well for fueling without a large chance of spillage.

    Jugs like that pour from the side more smoothly than the front. The wicks will last as long as the fuel lasts. If you let the fuel run out, the wick material will burn instead of the fuel.

    I love prepper/review videos!!! I agree with the look of a traditional lantern. You just can't beat $7. I purchased wick in a 15 foot roll off eBay. Wicks lasts a very long time if you use a low flame. Nobody can say how long a lantern will burn because the height of the flame dictates how fast it'll burn. You should get a whole nights worth of burn at a reasonable size flame. I prefer using the liquid paraffin because it can also be used in candle lamps made from wine bottles and such. I believe it all comes from crude though. Thanks for keeping the splash on film. I'm sure it will help a lot of us to think ahead. I'll keep a glass measuring cup handy.

    LOL, yeah, I think you need to practice using the lantern a little more. ;) I do believe if you push down on the lever with out pulling up the top, it will lift the glass for easy lighting, and blowing out the flame. If you have the wick too high you will get a soot coating on the inside of the globe. If you keep the wick at a moderate height you will get very little soot. Nice addition to the homestead.

    Hey there PN1 I was watching one of your older videos on the Walmart oil lamp, it did bring a well needed smile on my face. EZ way to lite/blow out flame.. First, lower the wick, then push ONLY the lever down in the direction of the fill cap, and lock the lever by sliding to the right towards the the fill cap. This keeps the glass up and out of your way. Slide the lever to left to lower the glass. 👌🏻👍🏻😉

      I have my lanterns hanging from snap hooks under the eaves on my roof deck. Its a pain to take them down so I roll the wick down until the flame is almost out, then give the bottom a light shake. The flame will go out right away. No smoke, no fuss, no need to lift the globe. Then leaving the wick down in the wick guide, the kerosene stays fresh for the next nice evening outside, even if its months later.

    The ancestors always have the better ideas. Having an aluminum foil (or thin aluminum/tin sheet) molded into a half circle, 2-3 inches away from the lantern glass, wrapped onto the lantern arms, ... and you can have a focused light lantern for greater illumination, but the heated metal sheet provides additional focussed room heating.

    You should tilt the glass globe back into the lantern before lighting. Fumbling with tilting the globe over a burning wick results in unnecessarily sooting the globe. Also exposing one side of the globe to the flame can result in cracking or shattering.

    Using a turkey baster for filling works well but kerosene will attack some plastics. The glass globe shouldn't be tilted for lighting. Use the lever to raise the globe and reach the wick with a match. Tilting the glass unnecessarily deposits soot on the glass and runs the risk of cracking the globe due to being directly above the flame. The globe need only be tilted to remove it for cleaning.

    That type of bottle will always "glug" when poured in that direction. Turning it upside down will help immensely.
    Those particular lamps have very narrow wicks 3/8", or 1/2" I believe. The wider the wick, the more light you get. Turn off your lights and try it at night alongside your old fashioned lamp with a wider wick.
    There's another style that curls a very wide wick into a tube. They got a lot wider wick material in a small burner by doing that. A 1 inch tube times pi equals over 3 inches. These were called Center draft, or side draft lamps. Both Aladdin, and Rayo were common lamps of this style in North America. I think the rayo's were about 2 inches in diameter, while the Aladdin's were about 1 inch in diameter. The Aladdin had a neat trick though, which actually made it brighter, while using less fuel then the Rayo. Along with the wick, it uses a mantal like a Coleman lantern. The Aladdin's are the brightest I know about, they say it's around the same amount of light as a 60 watt electric light bulb. They are so good that they are in business still today! Although you always get what you pay for, they are somewhat expensive. Even the old ones from the 1920s through the 1940s and beyond cost almost as much as a new one. They really hold their value.

    As long as the lantern never runs out of kerosene, the wick will never burn up, it will last indefinitely, you or your children will never use the amount of wicks in either of your or their life time by always keeping kerosene in the tank. To light use the lever on the bottom of glass globe, push it down and the globe will raise high enough to light the wick. Also the wick should have been trimmed to the curvature of where it comes out of the flame adjustment slot. To safely extinguish the flame, push that lever down raising the globe and blow out. Having the flame adjusted too high not only uses excessive fuel, it will also cause the glass globe to blacken with soot very quickly and will decrease the amount of light the lantern is capable of, also the above mentioned soot will be released into the area and will settle on everything including windows especially and can be breathed into the lungs. A properly adjusted flame will be a well rounded flame at the top and NEVER have a teardrop shape to it. Once you see a thin string of flame going up to a sharp point, it is adjusted too high, lower the wick until it goes away and gets back to a rounded top.

    if the glass keeps turning black fast means the wick is to high when its light but it will always trun black over time. also are these the big lamps? they had a small one at my Walmart your lamp looks a lot bigger.

    Your homestead and preps are coming along great. You remind me of a character in one of my new favorite prepper series I'm listening to on audible book called 299 Days, by Glen Tate. You should check it out; ( especially on audio book, so you can listen while working ) I think you'll see yourself and the national situation in the story. God bless.

    Those walmart lanterns aren't really all that great. for a few bucks more you could get any number of Dietz products that give more light and you can also get replacement parts for. The Walmart lantern was the first one i bought and it was ok to start and learn with but its really just a toy that only aluminates maybe 2 candlepower. not what i would call a good prep. Looks like your still kinda learning, it gets easier.. If you want a exceptional lantern get a Feuerhand. Thick metal, thick wires, very efficient and good light. A feuerhand will set you back a few dollars though 30-40 bucks. I have two and im thinking about getting a couple more.

    • @martyharless5097
      @martyharless5097 5 років тому

      I bought the cheapest lantern at Walmart just to see what a $6.00 lantern will do. I was not surprised it was not remotely close to my Feuerhand in performance nor was I surprised when the globe shattered in my hand while cleaning it. The surprise was how well the cheap lantern's burner worked in the Feuerhand. It has a larger, brighter flame and perfectly formed for maximum light with no soot. The flame was so much larger it would melt the paint on the inside of the chimney and effectively glue the globe to the chimney when it cooled. If I need to remove the globe I have to light the lantern first and let it warm a bit to release the globe. The cheap lantern is Floresense brand. Burner is 1/16 inch smaller than the Feuerhand. Remove the rubber gasket from the burner and it fits the Feuerhand like it was made for it.

    You may want to take care when you lay the globe over for maintenance. Once when I did the same to my brand new Dietz....... crash. My home is in the Philippines and after one of my Buddies sent me a replacement globe it only cost me about $45 USD. Lesson learned.
