  • Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, billionaire and philantropist, faced off against the World Chess Champion - Magnus Carlsen during the talkshow “Skavlan” in 2014, recorded in a studio in London. Carlsen started with 30 seconds on his clock, and Gates with 2 minutes - by the time he’d win the game, Carlsen would only up 12 of those seconds!

For those who are wondering, the "12 seconds" refer to the total time it took Magnus to make all of his own moves according to the chess clock. Gate's moves are counted separately. That's why it's "12 seconds" despite the video being over a minute.

Other than Bill Gates blundering the last 2-3 moves, he honestly played a lot better than I expected. When the video said he checkmated him in 12 seconds, I thought oh he prolly got him with the scholar's mate (4 move checkmate) But he honestly opened and developed pretty well for some one who likely doesn't play chess too often.

Maybe he was nervous, but moving away your only defending piece in obvious checkmate is a mistake belonging to the 500 elo range.

@@Tehkenny1yes he played like a 400 I think, no way he’s 1,500 like he claims. That checkmate was way too obvious.

They both aren’t geniuses. Magnus’s strengths are strong spatial abilities and working memory but his overall iq is in the 115-125 range
Most people at the top of their respective industries even in academia don’t have genius level intellect either. IQ is 1 factor of many
