2nd Year Carpenter here. I'm currently in school learning this stuff and I found your videos very helpful! One thing that I might add to this is that calculating your Slope Gain Factor is a game changer for calculating your rafter length. The equation is (Rise/Run)Squared+1, then square root. This is your slope gain factor. For example a 4/12 has a SGF of 1.054, meaning the cut rafter length is 1.054 times the length of the rafter run. So 24.25 x 1.054 would calculate your rafter length from ridge to birds mouth. You can even add your overhang to the rafter run length to get your total rafter length from ridge to facia. You will need to do deductions afterwards, of course. But its a little less math. You can also find the SGF of your hips the same way but adding 2 instead. (I forget the reason exactly, I was falling asleep at that point in the Theory.) So that would be (4/12)Squared+2, then square root. 1.453 is the SGF of your hip rafter. Hope this helps anyone learning how to calculate rafters!

GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT video. I've never done this before and these videos were exactly what I needed. Can't thank you enough for taking the time to create these.
The channel is excellent, I always follow. The biggest difficulty is due to the measurement system, here in Brazil we use meters and centimeters. This video has measurements in mm which makes it easier to understand.
Only just discovered your channel. Awesome stuff and really easy to follow. Just got to get the timber and start my decking and gazebo project. Will be using your videos to help me, thanks 👍
Thanks alot man , U are really full of mathematical equations for construction trade applications, thanks for ur amazing knowledge it helps alot ..im learning visually , without acctually cutting in real life , trying to memorize it for the field without having to pull out my phone ..have blessed life
Cough cough, still waiting on how to join perpendicular roofs ( valley). Haha..Your rafter videos are hands down the best on the UA-cams. I have learned so much bc of you, Thank you so much.
Hi Josh First off thanks for all your videos it helped me get through an apprenticeship that I took about a year ago. Just wondering you haven't uploaded any new material. One thing I would love would be a build like a shed or just a shed foundation. Anyway I hope to hear from you soon.
Hey buddy! I've been working on my first online woodworking course (handheld routers)... which is now done! Therefore, I can get back to making some more YT content. Most likely a shed build would be an online course... so much to cover. Thanks for the comment! Reach out if you need anything.
Im building a lean to front porch with a gable in the middle of the porch. I would love to see a video on how to layout the gable on the lean to. Do you have a video of how to lay this out or know of a video on how to do this? thank you for your videos they have been super helpful.
Great videos you have thank you for the education. Can you also do a video to show how to add a crickett on 2 separate structure 5 feet apart. The purpose is to not have rain water in between them.
Idk how I came across your page I still don't know a dang thing of what u just taught me, though I completely understood what you were saying math was my hardest subject probably the reason I'm still broke. But I just wanna say thanks man. Though I will find a way to defeat this battle or the almighty will help me if I try, I've been wondering how to fix my dad's tin shed/shop just don't have the courage to tell him I don't know how. But God bless you sir.
Im confused about where you got the 7.75 number. Does this number only pertain to a 4/12 pitch. Will it change with a 3/12 pitch? Your instructions are very clear. Im just confused. I love the videos. Thank you.
So I'm framing a 16x16 shed with a 4/12 pitch and a 1 foot over hang a 10ft rafter should be plenty long enough. I see you are in Tennesse beautiful country I used to live in Crossville. Be nice hearing from you I haven't lived there in a bout 20 year
Hey there! I've been in Franklin for about 10 years now... things have changed a lot! Let me know if you have any questions once you start building. :)
@@TrainingHandsAcademy right on I definitely will. Maybe when I finish it. I will send you a picture and after I watched your video yesterday I went out back and figured out my rafters and checked them out at day break this morning and they fit like a glove. Thanks. PEACE
Hello, I'm building a shed and find your videos so helpful. Any chance you can help me with a question. The shed is 16 feet x 10 feet and is almost 8 feet high. My ridge needs to be 16 feet long. My question is for that size of shed, what is sufficient for the ridge? 2x6x16 or 2x8x16 enough? Or do I need to go 2x10x16? Also, I'm using 2x4 as rafters. Thank you. Romeo Suarez
Great videos, thank you. I'm building a garden shed, using a 13ft 12 by 6 inch ridge beam (locally harvested). Using normal methods of rafter construction, I would be left with a 6 inch wide flat surface on the top of the ridge, which would be difficult to sheath prior to applying roofing material. How do I measure the rafters so that they meet at the center point above the ridge beam. Are there 2 bird mouths, one for the ridge and one for the exterior wall, or only one for the exterior wall?
Yes, two "birds mouths". All you have to do is not account for the ridge thickness in your run number, then locate your ridge height and cut your birds mouth. Hope that makes sense.
@@TrainingHandsAcademy you’re welcome buddy , I still watch your videos friend, they are very good! I have a question, for example, a 9 and 12 roof will always go up 15 inches?
God bless you. Can you pray for me ? I don't feel comfortable at my job anymore, I would like to start something like a business but I always got stock with negative thoughts. I feel blessed but sometimes I feel that I could do better with my abilities. God bless you and your family.
I would be honored to pray for you! May I have your fist name? And if you want to email me, I can follow up with you if you'd like. Josh@traininghandsacademy.com
In the name of Jesus I lift up all of your concerns, struggles, and fears to the Father. May He show up in whatever is going on in your life right now. Bro, thank you for adding this great info!
This is an excellent video. Thank you for showing us how to use the equations instead of just punching numbers into a construction calculator.
Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Please pray fro my students and my family.

How to join rafters if my wood is short or it is permitted?
Yo how to do this for a 1/2 inch thick model house it’s weird trying to convert….
Sorry, I don't understand what you are asking.

Ojalá pudiera, pero UA-cam aún no ofrece eso. Gracias por el comentario.
