Matt Leaf and I took Moment's adapter for a spin to check out its performance on Leica Summicron taking lenses. The results did not disappoint!
Moment's Website

I'm seeing tons of comments about vignetting, which means y'all are not watching to the point where we talk about that. Hehehee
We had about half an inch of space between the back of the adapter and the front of the taking lens, which was terrible for vignetting. It was just the only option we had with the little time we had for it. If using a slim solution, then vignetting is gone on the 50mm.
Perhaps don't release a video on a product yet if you're unable to demonstrate it's full potential?
I understand the issue UA-camrs face where they find they have to release videos about a product at the same time as other creators (while the hype is still there). But if this means that the quality of information provided in the video is severely impacted then this is a problem.
So the vignetting was the fault of the lens having an adapted ring for 77mm which increased the distance between the lens and the adapter? If that's the case I think it was a bad decision to release this video using that setup lol.
Yes, the vignette comes from that problem. The information is only impacted if you watch 10 seconds and decide you hate it. We clearly talk about the vignette issue at 5:42.
The proposition for this video was to make do with what we had at hand, improvise the experience and learn from it on the go. I'm pretty happy with it. Vignetting and all, I still find the look great. If you don't, then the adapter might not be for you, and that's fine, there are lots of other options! :)
@@AnamorphicOnABudget The look is great, absolutely!!
@@AnamorphicOnABudget I did watch the whole video, but that little bit is easy to miss, especially since the discussion uses vague terminology.
yesss i've been looking for more footage using this adapter! i ordered one last summer and i'm so excited to get my hands on it haha thank you for making this video, Tito and Matt!!
That's really quite impressive for such a budget friendly option. I've never tried shooting anamorphic before, so I'm leaning towards this adapter to try it out later this year. Thanks for doing the video and diving into how this works. Love how the footage turned out!
Crazy how much character the adapter has only being a 1.33 squeeze. But for the price they are selling it and the market they are appealing to with a new product, it's a shame they didn't think about how to make it more usable. For a first iteration, very promising.
This does look extremely promising. I think the addition of a threaded foot on the bottom of the lens for rail support, and a focus gear would add so much value
Agreed
Love seeing Matt on your channel!. Great video!
I love how the front element doesn't move, definitely makes having a matte box easier, though definitely having a place to mount to the rig and having focusing gears would really bring this to the next level, if they can also add a quick release adapter at the back then it'll be godly.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Got mine yesterday, and there is a bit of telescoping. Unless I was hallucinating.
My Moment 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter arrived yesterday and not only is it built like a tank, but it’s “Ford Tough”!
I haven’t tested it out yet but I have attached it to some of my Meike cinema lenses as well some of my Canon FD lenses.
Let us know some feedback you have please
Ah man heck yes, let us know how it works out with the Meike lenses. Or even better, post some clips 😃
I’ve pre-ordered one of these and this review has made me question everything 👀 the vignette at 50mm is disappointing and the double flares look really bad to me. I’m hoping the results will be better on different lens combos. Otherwise I’ve just wasted a grand! Oops
(I always love your videos and reviews tho!!!)
Yeah, honestly all of the footage here looks like utter trash. Doesn't help that his friend has the most annoying voice as well.
@@oo-eo9pw I also got taxed an extra £250 before they’d deliver it. which was nice. I think it might be a Kickstarter thing, but they could have given me a heads up!
I really love that you guys chose to test this adapter with Leica R lenses! Being able to carry over the colour and contrast of Leica R into anamorphic with this adapter, really created some unique looking images. I'm impressed with the look you were able to achieve, it's much more appealing to me than any of the Sirui or Laowa anamorphic lenses which have very little character at all. Thanks for sharing!
I feel like I might just keep saving for the aivascope
I like the gold flare. Blue flare might be sci-fi, but it doesn't fit so well with more naturalistic subjects. I just hope they eventually make a smaller version for MFT, or APSC.
Great review!! I almost did get that adapter but I decided to go with the new Sirui Saturn 35mm neutral flare, so far the quality is amazing, wonder if have you used that lens yet? and if you are doing a review, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I don't have a camera that works with the Saturn, unfortunately. Sirui is not offering it in L mount. :(
Hi Tito, I know that the vignetting in your video happened because of some issues with the setup, but I wanted to let you and your viewers know that the vignetting also occurs when using Moments recommend step . I tried a 50mm lens (Leica Summicron R) on a full frame camera ( Sony A7SIII) and even though Moment claims 50mm on full frame works it’s just not true. I went ahead and tested the adapter on my Red Komodo S35 sensor camera. Moment claims 35mm lenses would clear on S35 sensors but again I have to report, they don’t. Again I see very visible vignetting. I hope there will be quite a few more reviews coming who will give people a heads up on these issues. It would be great if you could do an update on the adapter also giving people a heads up about these issues. Thanks for your great work
I have been waiting for you to talk about this adapter. I am thinking of purchasing one to use with my RED Dragon 6k camera. Keen to hear your thoughts on it.
Hi Tito! Thanks again for another helpful video. I had a question about using the Moment AA (and adaptors others like it) on Sony E lenses on Sony cameras . So, obviously, the Sony cameras are known for their great autofocus. If you put the MAA on a Sony lens, will the autofocus still work? OR, with the addition of the adapter, would the focus have to be adjusted manually like every other anamorphic setup? I hope that makes sense. Thanks!
Unfortunately, the Moment adapter requires to have your taking lens set to infinity, and all focusing is done on the adapter! So, no luck with autofocus! :(
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Fair enough. Thanks, Tito!
Awesome! Really curious about how it would look on a Helios. Would be important to know, Moment themselves said it would intensify the characteristics but they haven't shown any footage.
The hype around the batman lens needs to die. No one would ever consider that lens until someone who was a somebody used it because he loved it and now all the posers and copy/paste UA-camrs are hyping it up 🤡
@@Samiam-mu5ln buddy what the fuck are you talking about. the helios is literally one of the most mass produced lenses of all time. it's literally the most used vintage lens for video and has been way before the batman.
I have videos about the Helios 44 before Batman! In fact, I'd risk saying those videos inspired the guys that *made* the custom versions for the Batman. So, it's a feedback loop.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget one step at a time there buddy, don't get too ahead of yourself now! This is still UA-cam world after all, and no one takes youtubers serious in the industry xD
@@Samiam-mu5ln lol.
Can’t wait for mine!!
Would it work with lenses that have a smaller objective, like 49/52/58mm? Or better to just get the Anamorphot 50?
Yeah, the Leica we were using had a 55mm thread.
Thinking that the Sirui 1.25x would be a better buy, possibly as it covers wider lenses...but this one's optical and build quality look really excellent! how wide do you think you could go if you were delivering to 16:9? I know that's probably a sacrilegious statement on this channel lol, but I often have to deliver to 16:9 even with anamorphic, so I have to cut off the sides anyways.
I might be wrong feel free to correct me but if you shot on a 4/3 sensor open Gate so you don't loose pixels you should get a 16/9ish right?
Correct. 4:3 and 1.33x lenses deliver 16:9 for final aspect ratio.
How do you think the Moment adapter compares to the Aivascope 1.5X? The Aivascope seems to be the people’s choice but the moment is rather affordable
Hello out there everybody and I am new to the filming thing and I just recently got an animal fick lens 1.33 and when I am. Filming and what I think is the wide angle. It looks extremely wide almost like it distorts like something is pulling it. Is this how it's supposed to look before editing? Thank you
is it a full frame adaptor ?
Can we use this adapter and still use auto focus on auto focus lenses??
No. The lenses have to be focused to infinity for the adapter to work.
I totally respect your opinion, you're like the anamorphic mentor to this community. But I fail to see why you think this is a better product than Great Joy's adapter, apart from flare color personal preference of course.
1- Moment's is 1.33x which is 2.364:1 while GJ's 1.35x which is exactly 2.4:1. Not a big deal but it is still difference.
2- Moment's vignettes on 50mm lenses on full frame, GJ's clears out Voigtlander 40mm f/2.0 SL-II perfectly on full frame and works great wide open.
3- With Moment's price tag, you could almost get 3 GJ adapters, attach them to 40mm, 50mm and 85mm lenses and keep them on and call it an anamorphic set. Never re-align again, just switch lenses and you're good to go.
4- Lack of 0.8 focus gears on Moments's adapter.
5- Optical performance? I doubt there's even a marginal difference between both.
Honestly, I think you're still being too kind to this adapter. All of the footage here looks like utter trash.
What I don't like about the Moment's adapter is that so far the advertising has only been hype. Pure hype using the final edit as the result. The vignetting is quite strong (unless it's a fault of the lens?). I'd be completely fine with the hype, the squeeze factor, the lack of a proper focus ring... etc if the price tag wasn't at $1,300. This product could have been priced better considering these faults and setbacks, but no, they decided to be greedy. So yes, although the anamorphic sphere is expensive, many budget options already exist and this one doesn't exactly revolutionize anything to excuse the price.
@@johnbrowningdp yeah everything I have seen from this adapter well the distortion looks very anamorphic for some reason the footage just looks flat like it has been over compressed with no dimension to the footage... Maybe they should have stopped the lens down a bit more? But there is just something off with how most of the footage from this adapter looks.
The problem is for us, Nikon Z users, I can't use the GJ on Z mount 🤠
Greatjoy adapter is shitty
Great test video!
Can't wait to test one of these out soon.
Even with the clever button design that Moment have engineered, I'm curious about how you both found the alignment process.
Was it easy enough to line everything up, and it stayed where you put it?
Or was it like other adapters I've used in the past, where you have to adjust it a few times throughout the shoot?
Ohhh the amber flares 👌🏾👌🏾 excellent
What's causes that wobbly effect in the footage?
Great video, once again, Tito. I'm interested how this compares to the GreatJoy adaptor ? From what I can tell the Moment has no 0.8 focus gears, is a similar size and weight and also (only) offers a 1.33x squeeze (but that's perfect for 16:9 sensors, giving a native 2.40 anamorphic image). I'm struggling to see why this is worth twice the price.
While the price is indeed much steeper, I found the visuals coming out of the Moment vastly superior to Great Joy's. The price tag is hard though. Is it worth two or three GJ's? I can't tell.
I want more anamorphics with neutral flares that will flare based on the color of the light that's overloading it.
Wow. The bokeh is longer than the 1.6x Sirui lenses. Which is saying something since this is 1.33x.
Surprisingly excellent adapter
Buttttttt, what format did you shoot the S1H on, 16:9 or 3:2 open gate? 🙈 I guess that could have had an impact on vignetting and bokeh rendering?
We were filming 16:9
if you were to shoot 3:2 your aspect ratio would be a 1.99:1 after desqueeze. 1.33 is for 16x9. If you want a 2.40:1 on a 3:2 you would need a 1.6x squeeze lens
@@AnimeZone247 That makes sense! So I'd guess, shooting 3:2 would introduce even more vignetting as more sensor area at the top and bottom is beeing used?
@@nebukadnezzar3578 yes since 3:2 is 1.5:1 and 16:9 is 1.778:1
What is the T value of this adaptor? Roughly....
This is random, but does anyone know what kind of shoulder rig Matt is using?
It's an old Cavision rig!
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Thank you!! Wonderful video, as always!
Matt clearly didn't align the adapter. Seems very off in the at first :/
Yeah, we stopped to realign it at one point, the sun was going down and we rushed out before it was gone. I had a whole section about aligning it, but the episode was just too long.
what is that shoulder rig part, tho?
It's Matt's old Cavision rig!
Certainly looks better than the older SLR magic adapter and is single focus. 50mm to me is not wide enough though.
I think the SLR magic is actually decent apart from the blue streaks. I've tried it with the fx30 and sigma 16mm using clear image zoom and I think it's a winner.
This moment has nice oval bokeh though
I think I like the look because of the Leica lens
Amigo, o foco dela é duplo?
Nao! Foca a taking lens no infinito e o resto eh na Moment. :)
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Isso é ótimo! Valeu!
I almost bought one of these but not being able to go wider than 50mm was a deal breaker. It has really nice bokeh though!
Like the lens...want his beanie.
The bokeh on this adapter does NOT look like 1.33x bokeh usually does. The ovals are so tall it looks amazing for an adapter with this stretch factor. So tall that if you told me this was a 2x scope I would believe you. Is there any specific reason for the stretchier bokeh? Surprised not to see an explaination or many comments about it, and im very curious to know.
I thought I was the only one that noticed. The bokeh def. look a lot more oval than your standard 1.33X. I wonder what else they're doing in the design that causes this.
to my brain there's just no way it can actually be doing that on its own, but they were still using a normal 50 as the taking lens I think. so I have no idea what's going on
mildly interesting that this wasnt even mentioned in the video, it seemed so glaringly obvious to me on first watch. its about to be a few days later and no one has gotten around to responding to the bokeh comments, not even Tito. but that's fair since this platform isnt his job. Really hoping theres some logic to this cause will always want taller bokeh
@@notPat-Rick same bro. Hope to hear a response soon. Is it cause of there taking lens you think?
@@chinitopinoy1726 it must be!?? from what I see it just cant be the 1.33x squeeze on its own there has to be something else.
This looks better than Sirui, Vazen, GreatJoy, an an awful lot of projector setups too.
I agree it needs some niceties like rod support, and focus gears, especially as it is priced, those two would be good to include. Then there’s the eternal battle with adapters of getting them as close to the taking lens as is possible.
using an appropriate stepper ring instead of an 80mm OD ring inbetween seems like a relatively easy fix to that issue.
Slr magic adapter does the same work but for 350$
Aivascope still king
I mean, it’s alright. Still way too high for a 1.33x lol
compared to the Siri Anamorphic adapter, this Moment Piece of glass seems to be very big... although the rear diameter / throw is only 67 mil? I am skeptical about the Moment approach... the only reason could be a very much better optical performance - but this becomes not clear in the short story. ... many ??? also about this kind of "review", pardon me for the clarity: but such stuff dies not help
Looks better than expected and I agree with Matt that the bokeh looks more than 1.33x.
I just don't get Moment, you know. I remember asking them somewhere (Facebook? Reddit? A UA-cam comment? No idea) that if they designed their 1.33x (phone) glass from scratch, why go with 1.33x that made sense with 4:3 recording but not really in these times. I can't recall the answer, but they either didn't understand or just pulled out generic marketing bull. I just don't get why they don't simply make a proper factor when their goal is claimed to bring 16:9 to scope.
1.33 DOES bring 16:9 to scope though?
It seems you may have it backwards. 1.33x was specifically chosen because it converts a 16:9 sensor to a 2.35.1. 1.33x on 4:3 wouldn't even make it as wide as 16:9. 1.33x makes the most sense for the average consumer, since 2x would mean way too much crop on a 16:9 sensor for the average joe, meaning you need cropmarks on top of the desqueezed image for monitoring. I think it was a calculated move. And not a bad move at all.
@@mellin7049 1.33x adapters were also used to film 16:9 on more square formats when the change was made into 16:9 broadcast but the infrastructure was mostly 4:3. if you divide 16/9 (1.777777) by 1.333 you get 1.333, which is 4/3.
@@EveTheBoneQueen 1.33 x 16 equals roughly 21.3 (it's 21.28 but in reality, most 1.33x are 1 1/3, so 21 1/3 would be precise).
Regardless of what you work with, divided by 9 that's something between 2.364 and 2.37 - both neither 2.39:1 or 2.4:1. Sure, it's close. But why not make it right, if you make something new? There's no gain in doing it "wrong". GreatJoy seemingly understood that (or it was a lucky accident).
@@mellin7049 as stated in a different answer in this comment chain, 16:9 does not bring you to 2.35:1; you can calculate this on your own if you don't trust my math. And if it did, that's not scope since the 70s.
And of course, in the past 1.33x converters were used to bring 4:3 cams to 16:9, the math isn't too hard either. 4:3 is the same as 12:9. 12 x 1.33 equals 15.96 (or 15.999999... if using the proper 1 1/3 as explained earlier in the other comment), which is pretty decent 16:9
1.33x has no advantage for the average Joe or anyone, it just needs extra steps as you have to crop the image a tag (instead of leaving it be). It's not far off, but it is off. So why do it wrong if you, as a company, claim to do it from scratch for a certain goal that you obviously don't reach? I mean, calculate it yourself. 1.33x neither gives you 2.35:1, nor 2.39:1.
can tell you didnt turn off the IBIS when using this adapter. too much Jello
Nice video from you! I like the Look of the Adapter. Did some testshots: ua-cam.com/video/CDumXcMivCk/v-deo.html,
Did all very fast, so some shots aren't perfect, but I wanted to test the Lens Flares and the Bokeh at night.
Cool test but to my eye this looks pretty wack. Always appreciate the pursuit of anamorphic.
Vignetting is super strong, footage doesn’t look great
vignetto have.its not good
vignette is too much
I'll just say, I'm really REALLY glad I didn't buy one of these in the Kickstarter.
seems like a noob move to not use atleast a 55mm like moment recommends for full frame. Everything the camera guy was talking about was lost because I would never use that setup in any capacity, much less real work.
looks terrible for 1300.oo
This doesn't look good, I don't know why you guys give a positive review.
I'm sorry Tito but all of the footage shot with the adapter looks like complete garbage.
Every shot is severely underexposed, has constant warping vignette, horrible flares that over power the image when backlit and I'm pretty sure the adapter isn't even properly aligned in the beginning.
Pretty disheartening to see this review. I think it's a very promising piece of kit but this video is so rushed and incomplete. I think it's worth it to revisit this with a lot of proper tests.
Can you expand on what parts you feel we didn't cover?
@@AnamorphicOnABudget I just think there isn't a lot of video documentation on this adapter in general. Would be interesting to see in more controlled lighting scenarios on different camera/lens combos to more strongly see results and comparisons between their spherical take lens. I think people would appreciate seeing its limitations on fullframe vs super 35 sensors, and performance at different apertures. Love your videos, just found the majority of the ones on this adapter to not be as in depth as other products sometimes are. Thank you for the response.
Love the channel and insight but this was a horrible PR/ marketing decision to upload this footage. This is going to hurt sales 100%.
The folks at Moment quite liked it. :)
Meh, just seems another 1.33x...nothing special🤔
What happened to the budget now you're recommending stuff that causes 1, 300 bucks come on dude.
That is a budget considering how much Anamorphic lenses cost. You're not going to get dirt cheap quality lenses
@@phoenixfunny4517 We just go back to the oval inserts and cropping video in post :P Ha-hah!
There's ALWAYS someone with this argument! hahaha. I'll start recommending $20 phone lenses that are just garbage.
There are not many three digit products being released, and Tito has covered those also. If you want budget, get a second hand 16mm scope and a variable diopter from eBay and pair them with one of them tiny manual focus taking lenses like TTArtisan 50/2 if you're intending to spend less than $400 total, that's a well established well covered concept at this point
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Yeah, the OP post of this is frigging stupid.
Things a cheaper than ever.
And this is a great tool for the cost.
Top heavy, nearly impossible to focus. Bad product!
I really don’t understand what’s cool about a unusable adapter and black corners. Wtf is this ? Is it gonna work only above 70mm ? ( coz apparently with the 50mm you habe black corners ) if yes , why using a 50mm if your never gonna use it like this anyway? The image looks good in the middle but its unusable coz of the corners .
it's horrible
