Good movie not as great as the background. Clint always seems out of place in WWII movies since the spaghetti Westerns defined him in the time period.

I saw this movie with my father at the age of 10. I did not understand what I was seeing at the time, but the planning became clear as the movie progressed, for instance, planting the charges on the road to the airport. The combined effect of my father, the music, the actors, the action, the location, and the intelligence of the planning cast a magical spell on me as well. I have passed it to my children.

Hopefully many! I was approximately 8 years old when this film debuted. No, I did not see this in the theatre. However, it appeared on American television ("Movie of the Week", that sort of thing) very soon- within a year. One wonderful evening when I was supposed to be in bed, my parents (Dad specifically, of course) tuned in to "Eagles". I had already learned the art of clandestine television viewing and quietly found my usual spot at the end of the long bedroom hallway, looking past the kitchen and dining area into the living room. The television in the far corner of the room afforded me a perfect view of the screen, and kept me shielded from detection by my parents. I watched a lot of movies in that manner. What struck me even then was the length of the film. I was literally falling asleep on my feet but determined to watch it all. Like Mr Dugan I did not understand all that unfolded before me but enough to know the good guys from the bad guys and to marvel at the firefights and explosions. It was the start of a love affair similar to our host, David, that continues even now- like ni mo I am close to 60 years old.

I love Bear Island, Polar Station Zebra, Breakhurt Pass and many others. I would love to recommend The Eagle Has Landed. Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland are kings.

The old classics, like Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone, just can something that newer action movies can't. As several highlight, in their comments "It's a man with a mission". It's unfortunately not something you see much of in recent films. But thanks to @David for the brilliant mini documentary.

This Where Eagles Dare homage is, firstly, by far the finest 'filming locations revisited' film I've seen anywhere - including on mainstream TV programmes. It's a beautiful piece about this man's obsessive quest and the production quality throughout is just superb. Now, I have to confess that the icing on the cake is that Where Eagles Dare was also, by far, THE favourite film of my childhood and teen years. It represents perfection in the genre on so many levels. Having recorded it from the BBC (no ads/commercials) I then watched it almost every Saturday evening for years. It became a ritual and my mother catered for weddings on these nights, so as an only child I'd subject my patient father to it again & again over a shared tea of 'boiled eggs with soldiers' (toast). I too have spent hours examining Google Maps & planning the eventual road trip, nay pilgrimage, I will make there. The other videos I saw before were done in summer but I feel only winter would suffice. It's fantastic to know someone else out there shared this same obsession with the film and everything it represented. I worked in the military with videographers and production, so have a small inkling of the kind of time and obsessive attention to detail it would require to capture all the stills, clips and drone footage... that's before even stitching it together into a final piece of this length yet so polished. My congratulations go out to you David.

@@davidskauen6146 Hi Ollie that makes the group swell as I also intend to do the pilgrimage. During late 60s and early 70s, I saw this film in the splendor of 70 mm, Cinema Scope, 35 mm , 16 mm and even 8 mm in a small theater in Hyderabad, India, consisting of only 44 seats. Such was my passion I rather chased the movie where ever and whenever it was screened. A total of 16 times in theatres and more than hundred times on TV after video CDs came.
Now my daughter lives in Frankfurt, I sure am making this pilgrimage.

Fellow Norwegian here. This one hit close to home. For I too saw "Where Eagles Dare " ("Ørneredet" in Norwegiqn) on NRK TV as a child, and it left a permanent mark on me. Buying it on VHS and later DVD, watching it every christmas holiday as a tradition. Something about all the snow in the movie. A few years ago I visited Werfen and the castle. Seeing this video makes me want to go back - in the wintertime. A beautiful homage to a classic movie. Stunning filming and great soundtrack on this - just like the real movie.

Made my hair on the back of my neck stand on end. A the movie was just the same. A fantastic film. Went to the castle in 2018, so that’s off my bucket list. I watch this movie once a year when we have our first snowstorm. I’m 60. I’ll obviously never outgrow this movie, and I know I’ve watched it more than any other movie I’ve ever seen. I truly enjoyed this! Thanks for making it!

Stunning job…fantastic video! Terry Mountain who appeared in the film as a (amongst other characters) German radio operator who is killed by Lt. Schaffer, recently did a cameo in a little film we made. He gave me a photo from the set of Where Eagles Dare showing cast & crew celebrating Liz Taylor’s birthday! He spoke very highly of his time on set.

I watched it over and over for years after recording it off the telly in the early 80s. Now, I wait for Christmas every year to watch it, a classic.

I just turned 42 and I've lost count the number of times I've seen this movie after first watching it with my Grandfather. I recorded it on VHS in the early 90s during a Veteran's Day showing (commercials and all) and would watch it once or twice a week after school. I thought I loved this movie more than anyone else...until I watched this. From Texas, you have my admiration and appreciation.

Very happy that your obsession carried you through to this recreation. Amazed you found the last Cable Car. 1969 was also the year of the Italian Job. Hoping that a similar obsessive follows that one around Turin and the Alps.

I saw this movie with my family in 1969 in NYC at a theater on Broadway. It was pure magic! Since then it has been one of my all time favorites and I too am afflicted with the lore of the film and its adventure. I often wonder if this kind of film could ever be done again and marvel at the fact it was made in the first place. For some reason this brilliant body of work really gets under your skin. Thanks for sharing your discoveries.

Amazingly well done David. I am from Ireland, my father came home from work, had his dinner and took me to our local cinema that evening for the late viewing of Where Eagles Dare. It was 1969, I was seven years of age and felt very special to see such icy spectacular scenes on the big screen. I have lived in Munich for a lot of years now one hour from these amazing picturesque places. Every time I see this film I have such a warm feeling and remember my amazing father. Your obsession was excellently executed and I wish you every success in your art. Thank you for your perseverance and was so sad to see the chair storage cable car
