I'm always amazed at how chill the Phantom guard members look after being called out in second place. Some are actually smiling. It was the best season Phantom had in a decade and they tied the previous record score, but they still had to be disappointed to get so close and not win. Very disciplined of them.
"The Phantoms". Curt always seemed like he didn't know what was going on.
And he didn't, until 91 he was lost.
And I know that was awkward for Rondo having to deal with Curt’s cluelessness but being a part of the news media, Curt was Rondo’s broadcasting idol so it was like a dream for him to work with the legend.
Hard to believe that four of these corps don't exist anymore.
You can thank DCI for that. That pricing most of these organizations out of business. And in my opinion, they've turned the activity into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three-ring circus. They need to change DCI, to become, marching band International. Call it what it really is today. November 24th 2022. Form a member of the Long Island sunrises 1964 through 1968. Also form a member of the Floyd Bennett golden eagles from Brooklyn New York, 1960 and 1961.

The crowd doesn't boo the corps. They boo the judges when they don't agree with where a corps placed.
If ever there was a season that should've ended in a tie for first but didn't, it was 1989.
I reckon 1987 is a close contender also. Or even 2019 or 1991, but it's tough to call.

But it’s pretty damn impressive to be in the top two since 2007.
BD went 8 years (1986-1994) without a win. It was their longest dry spell in nearly 50 years of DCI.
SCV went 19. 29 without a solo win.

I’m a life long SCV fan…. Having said that, and after listening and scrutinizing both shows a million times… I have to say that Phantom Regiment should have earned their first DCI championship title in ‘89.

Phantoms drum line was subpar compared to SCV in 89. A 19.4 for phantom in drums, was a gift.

I agree. 1989 and 1984 were, IMO, the 2 best years in terms of scoring and entertainment value from 1st place through 25th place. Those 2 seasons were just incredible.

I've said for years that I saw the recap and SCV got a 99 with a.2 penalty. Interesting that their caption scores = 99.0
No, the Visual number was a TV typo. Their score was not 14.9 - it was 14.7 (PR had 14.9). No penalties; the score was 98.8.

SCV’s percussion was the difference, their execution and arrangement was light years from PR and I’m saying that loving Phantom Regiment’s show.
Why did they "boo" the Cadets score. I saw the show that year (Les Miz) and it was one of their more amateurish shows.
It was the most breathtaking and complex show of the season. It is one of their great shows. 100%.

Crowd favourite, probably. It’s definitely an emotional audience-pleasing show.
Booing the result, not the corps. Same thing happened with Madison who certainly would not get booed. As for "amateurish", I don't get that. Certainly it was more accessible and less esoteric than some of their other shows during that era but that doesn't make it amateurish.

The velvet knights were the jesters of DCI for a time. I wish they, or a similar corp, were still around. A corp that provided comedy relief and a laid back presence, let alone one good enough to make finals. haha

Ah they mentioned "High School Band." I forget drum corps crowds get incredibly defensive separating DCI and "Marching Band"... Which is merited.
They really picked the worst possible time to announce it. You're keeping fans anxious to know who won on edge to name the drum major of some completely unrelated organization.

Most likely they weren’t happy of the score they got. I don’t think they were booing the scouts, I think they were booing the score the judges gave them. That’s what I think
@@TheMrHashi That's right, and as someone who marched in that show I thought I score was wrong too. It was too high. All scores that year were too high. I do think we deserved 7th. If there's one corps I think may have been robbed in '89, I'd have to say it was Star.
I still say phantom! Hell, scv had drummers dropping sticks. Although good recovery. But still, phantom was on!

They were both great shows. SCV won the night. The numbers were in their favor. Remember, we all aren't qualified to judge one caption, let alone all from our armchairs. I was in the stands for Regiment's performance and it was spectacular, but SCV hammered them in drums and that was the difference.
And, SCV's show was not at all the same show as '88.

Curt goudy was a bust here. SCV should have won in 88.
Curt Gowdy was just the worst.
That whole "DCI is SO a sport look here's a sports guy" phase they went through. The DCI identity crisis continues to this day.
Kirt Gowdy gave DCI instant cred
Gowdy got called in at the last minute to do this broadcast when Dick Enberg cancelled. Curt was retired, clearly past his prime and knew absolutely nothing about drum corps prior to that week. But I heard Rondo and others say he became a genuine drum corps fan.
I always thought he had kind of a grandfatherly charm during these broadcasts. He was pretty clueless but he seemed to really enjoy and respect the activity and its members.
