This watch was saved from a fire! Can I give a second chance at life?

  • This has been a long ongoing project - I bought this particular pocket watch more than 20 years ago at a flea market.
    The seller bought a whole lot of watches from a watchmaker shop that had burned down.
    The dial reads Wien, which is Vienna, my hometown.
    Last summer, with a sense of nostalgia, I decided to restore it and add it to my collection to be passed down in my family.
    During the whole process, I was lucky to find a specialist in Germany who helped refurbish the dial, the old steel Breguet hands are from eBay.
    Bearing in mind the watch’s “survival” from the flames, I wanted to also restore and blue the screws with flames.
    Polishing & bluing screws:
    • How To: Polishing And ...
    Hope you enjoy the restoration 😊

    Easily one of the most efficient and pragmatic restorations I have seen in a long time. Thanks for sparing us heroic efforts & banal chatter. This is very much the way I see approaching watchmaking as I continue to build my skillset. No muss/No fuss. Just straight and to the point. Nicely done.

      @Magic Watchmaking For myself, the focus is on 19th Century mechanical (lever) watches. There are, of course, fusee and cylinder escapements as well but these often require a different skillset and I don't often see those
      movements examined. I think I was hoping to see you refurbish one of these latter movements just as a way of causing your work to standout more from the large numbers of providers. BTW: I had not seen the screw plate you used to blue the screws you polished. I have a steel plate but its plain that a brass plate made bluing so much easier. Is that an after-market piece or one of your own manufacture?

    • @MagicWatchmaking
      @MagicWatchmaking  Рік тому

      @@BruceWSims Bluing screw video is linked in the description. The brass plate is simple 2mm brass plate from hardware store. I make some hole in it and mount an wooden handle.
      About cylinder escapement pocket watches they need as you said special skillset. I'm not a big fan because thay are not accurate. It's just my private opinion.

      The chrome coating is burned and not anymore there. If I let the iron as it is, it will collect rust very soon. To blue the screw is just and old rust protection method.
      Thank you so much for watching and kind words ☺️

    Really nice restoration! Only few points: probably that staining on two wheels could be removed at least little bit, stem is horrible, glass bezel little off center and please use proper screwdriver size. Dial restoration is outstanding!

    • @MagicWatchmaking
      @MagicWatchmaking  Рік тому

      - Wheels: they’re damaged by fire. Maximal cleaning I’ve done 🫣
      - Stem: It is discolored by fire. One day I will find a replacement!
      - Bezel off: Good eyes you have. I correct it ☺️
      - Screwdriver: The slot of the screws is very tiny. Bigger/proper screwdriver want fit 🫣

    What a phenomenal restoration! I can tell this was a special piece for you. That dial restoration was also incredible. Can you tell what was involved in it? They look like two different dials!

    • @MagicWatchmaking
      @MagicWatchmaking  Рік тому

      It is truly nice piece of restored history. About the dial I can't tell any details. I send it to specialized dial restoration company. The general procedure is:
      - Take the indexes down
      - Clean, polishing and new plating
      - Printing
      - Vanishing
      - Put indexes back
      If this make sense.

    • @BruceWSims
      @BruceWSims Рік тому

      @Magic Watchmaking Hmmmmm.... that sounds "dangerously close" to having a new dial made. I have seen some dials that have been trashed by
      scavengers dismounting the movement from gold and silver cases merely
      get scrap value for the case. And I think an arguement can be made for reconstructing such dials. For the dial on the watch you refurbished, might it have been enough to hand clean and/or "dip" (see: denture cleaner) the dial rather than have it reconstructed? Thoughts?

    Great job! Lovely restoration. Can you tell me where you found the tool used for the barrel Arbor? And it's name? Looks like a pin vice but with a claw end, really useful! Always find this job tricky with tweezers and thought your way looked much more ping proof :)! Many thanks 🙏

    I would have replated the gold parts too, and remanufacture the crown wheel and ratchet wheel, nickel plate them, remanufacture the escapement shafts. And my rhodium would be 7 microns thick not 0.1 micron that comes off in 10 days

  • @boydsargeant7496
    @boydsargeant7496 Рік тому

    Lovely job! Why rhodium plate it? What’s the benefit? Also, where did you get the hands? I can never find what I’m looking for when you need a length and the internal diameter.

    An absolute pleasure to watch - I think you should use a text to speech generator if you don't like talking on camera though as it is distracting having to stop watching the good stuff to read the text. I think your channel will grow a lot faster if you did something like that. And with the amount of free software around at the moment, it would be easy - and take less time than having to put all those words on the screen. Please don't take this the wrong way - it's just my opinion.
