I was double booked (same seat number) as another passenger on Virgin JNB-LHR. I was seated first, and she complained, LOUDLY. The flight attendant asked if she really insisted on that seat, she demanded yes, so the FA upgraded me to Upper Class.

That's definitely the best move, but it still sucks that the racists actions were still rewarded. Even though he didn't get an upgrade, he disrupted the other passengers flight and got an empty seat next to him as a result. I hope they banned him afterwards

I have the deepest respect for flight attendants in modern times. The amount of difficult people they have to deal with, I could not do that. She is so calm and warm, a perfect personality for that difficult job. ❤

30 yr FA for AA. I was the Purser (Inflight manager) on an overnight flight to LHR. Got a call that 2 passengers had snuck into the back restroom. We listened at the door & quickly knew what they were engaged in. We grabbed a piece of paper & made a “Welcome to the mile high club” certificate & about six of the crew all gathered around the lavatory door waiting patiently. The door unlocked and the young lady stepped out. The crew whooped and cheered stating loudly “Welcome to Mile the Club”! Loud enough the entire back of Economy class all turned to see what was going on. The cheering continued until the male came out & the both of them slinking back to their seats in very bright shades of red. We must always be in constant supervision of the cabin & lavs so the chance of not getting caught will be slim to none.
She seems so patient and poised, which inevitably I'm sure reflects in her professionalism. Sometimes we tend to forget and appreciate jobs like these and how challenging it can be on them despite how classy and glamourous it may seem from the outside. Loved the way she explained stuff, she seems like a great and intelligent human who loves and excels in her career!
Really do people think it seems glamorous it doesn’t seem glamorous to me stuck in a metal box for hours on end with your ears blocked breathing that horrible filtered air and there is nearly always someone on the plane with the worse BO. Whenever I’ve been on a plane I’ve always thought I don’t know how they do it I couldn’t keep up that happy welcoming persona while on a plane for 8 hours.

I worked for Virgin Atlantic as an engineer for 31 years at Gatwick airport, during that time I was on shift three times when somebody had died during the flights. As ground engineers we would keep a discrete distance to let the crew and emergency services go through the necessary removal of the deceased. But of the three, there's one occasion that stands out. The aircraft arrived and the passengers were disembarking, when there was only a few left on board there was a sudden rush of the crew for an "emergency" in the rear cabin. Apparently someone had died during the flight, his family said it wasn't unexpected, he had been terminally ill, he'd made it through his family holiday and almost home again. But about a couple of hours out from Gatwick he sadly passed away, his family decided not to call the crew, or alarm and distress the other passengers. So they proped him up in his seat and made it look like he was asleep. When the cabin was almost empty they told the crew, which is when pandemonium broke out as they rushed to get the medical gear to try and revive him, his family stopped them and explained before they went into action. I thought it was so thoughtful of the family not to cause distress to the other passengers. Of course once the crew knew exactly what had happened the deceased and his family were, as normal in this situation treated with the utmost respect, care and discretion.

That's a remarkable story. Terminally ill people usually don't die in a plane seat. They get so progressively weak the last days of their life that it wouldn't make sense to board a plane a few hours prior (barely conscious, breathing problems...). Something more acute must of happened there. That in turn makes it bizar that the family didn't alarm anyone. I'm not judging, just very weird situation.

cabin crew are so underrated both in nominal flight and in an emergency. i really appreciate them. listen to the safety presentation - the cabin crew are there to make sure you have your absolute best shot at surviving if things go wrong, and more often than not, you WILL survive.
As a muslim who has prayed on a plane several times. I always did it while sitting on my seat to not disturb anyone and be respectfull. In special cases you can pray while sitting down. I never understand people that lay out something on the floor in an airplane. I think most of those people are just showing off and that is not commendable at all.
I think that being inconsiderate to others is a not limited to specific religions :) However, if they aren't blocking passage for people then I'd have no problem with it.

9:04 When I was in the Army we were encouraged to wear our service uniform when flying coach. I was almost always approached by an attendant and offered an upgrade to business class. One time I was kicked up to first class, with complimentary alcohol. I've always thought of it as one of the more tangible ways of saying "Thank you for your service."
I have the greatest respect for Flight Attendants. Its often a difficult and unpleasant job, performed in trying circumstances. 99.9% of FA's I have encountered have been lovely, and they have to be lovely even when they are exhausted or unwell. Thank you to the FA's!
My dad tested those life rafts in The English Channel in 1948. They were developed at HMS Cardington during and after WWII. He volunteered for the job after seeing them in a pretrial. He told me he volunteered because after 8 years serving in the Royal Australian Navy, he knew that these were as close to the perfect piece of survival equipment that he had ever seen. It's not just the raft but the survival equipment on board, (an inflatable solar still for distilling fresh water, fishing lines and hooks etc). He was the CPO Safety Officer HMAS Sydney during the Korean War. They have improved the design over time, with the introduction of new materials in the manufacture, but the concept has changed very little in 80 years. He told me that his six days in the autumn of 1948 was the best paid holiday he ever had, despite the horrible weather and being stuck on a raft with two Poms.
On my last flight all of the crew onboard were female. They got a standing ovation before takeoff and after landing. Everyone was so happy to see 2 females flying the plane and backed by an all female cabin crew.
I know the intention was good, but isn't that kind of demeaning? Like imagine if the crew was all black or something else and people did that. It's weird at best. Women are still just people

The crash she is referring to is that of Birgenair Flight 301 which occurred on the 7th of February 1996 and was the joint-deadliest aviation incident involving a Boeing 757 (along with American Airlines Flight 77) having a total of 189 fatalities. Furthermore, Flight 301 is the deadliest aviation accident ever to have occurred in the Dominican Republic. It was caused by erroneous airspeed readings. There was evidence that some of the recovered bodies had been 'mangled' by sharks and life rafts were found floating in the area. But obviously no one knows how many of them had survived and were subsequently eaten or attacked by the sharks. "All 189 people on board a Boeing 757 charter plane - most of them German tourists heading home from two weeks of tropical sunshine - were killed yesterday when their aircraft crashed into the Caribbean minutes after taking off from Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic." "US Coast Guard vessels joined the rescue effort before dawn yesterday. Officers said they and the Dominican navy had picked up 40 bodies by afternoon, some of them injured by sharks. Dominican officials said there was little hope that anyone survived. The Coast Guard said schools of circling sharks made it too dangerous to use divers. The aircraft apparently sank quickly but reports of empty life rafts floating among the debris suggested some passengers may have escaped from the wreckage, only to be blown towards the sharks by stormy winds and eight foot waves."

She has such a nice, warm and caring attitude, while being very professional and diplomatic even about the worse parts of her job. Very impressive person with so many interesting stories! I could have listened to her answering questions and telling us about the job for hours! I hope she continues to have a great career and wish her only the most pleasant passengers and flights. :)
I was asked to sit next to a Bangladeshi because no one else wanted to. I sat next to him from Philippines to Canada. He was a great education to me, Very well clued up with great ideas. The time "flew"
I've flown with Virgin many times (I prefer them) and I just regret that this lovely lady was never one of the crew. As for female pilots, when I got my Private Pilot's Licence the examiner who did my General Flying Test was a lass who on her seventeenth birthday passed her driving test AND flew her first solo! On the ground she was all laughing and joking, but as soon as we boarded the aircraft she switched to all-business and was the most professional pilot I've ever met - her attitude got me to realise instantly the seriousness of what we were doing, and the level of responsibility you have as a pilot. She later went on to fly 747s for British Airways, I would want her flying me over any other pilot, any day. It's just a shame that if she was a pilot of an airliner in which I was a passenger, I couldn't visit her office.
I was boarding a flight to Spain and the captain was at the aircraft door greeting us passengers. When my ex realised the pilot was a woman he tried to convince me to leave the flight. He actually visibly paled when he cottoned on. He was an uptight nightmare the WHOLE flight which further peed me off as I’m a nervous flyer. I dumped him but had to stay in the booked apartment with him for the whole week 🤦🏻♀️. And some men wonder why we still feel a bit picked on and singled out.

13:20 airplane mode. She's right on most things, but wrong on this one. The ILS beacon is in a different frequency range. There are international laws and agreements on what frequency bands are used by telecom and other users, specifically to prevent what she's claiming. It does, however, quickly drain your battery because your phone keeps trying to connect to cell towers that aren't there. If something so dramatic as losing an ILS signal could happen, phones would be permanently banned on board.
It's to avoid the fairly small risk of interference with any of the airplanes electronics. If they did not insist on flight mode the airplane electronics would have to be designed, tested and regularly re-certified compatible with full strength mobile/cellular phone signals. Some commercial planes flying today were built before cell phones even existed.
@murdo_mck yes, but it depends on what frequencies they operate. The bands don't overlap, and that's by design. The age of the aircraft doesn't change the regulated frequency bands.
@@murdo_mck If there was any real risk they wouldn't just trust people to put their devices in airplane mode. If terrorists could bring down planes with a phone or a similar device, they would never be allowed in. Regulated devices really send very weak amounts of energy, won't do shit to any cable that is at least somewhat protected (even on the level of the average $2 usb cable). Even devices that don't respect norms and try to send as much energy out as they can are very likely going to hurt you and people next to you first before actually doing damage to the aircraft. The real reason is they don't want passengers to be distracted by their devices during critical phases of the flight
5G can have a negative effect on some aircraft auto land capabilities, but I'm not an expert on if there is anything beyond that technically. Mostly tho, I think they just don't want people yaking on phones while in the air and/or want passengers to NOT be distracted during critical phases of flight.
I heard that "altitude changes tastebuds" explanation so often... But A), I've been to altitudes of close to 6000m, and stuff still tasted fine, and B) I brought plenty of my own food on planes and even a cheap ass sandwich is normally tastier than the crap which is in those trays...
There's definitely something to that though, because there's scientific truth to tomato juice tasting better in planes, it's insane! I always prefer it on a flight over on land. 😅
I thought the same - if you bring nuts, fruits etc they taste the same as on the ground, you've eaten them many times, you'd notice if it was different.
It's not just the pressure, but the extremely low humidity on board. Modern planes like the 787 and a350 have higher humidity but the majority or planes have humidity below 10% (where I live on the ground humidity is usually 70-80%)

This is so interesting! I’ve always been hugely fascinated by how airplanes operate and this gave me some new insights that I haven’t heard before. I know a lot of people have a fear of flying, but I always look forward to it and love the whole airport and flight experience. Maybe that’s because I don’t travel often for it to become tedious!
Talking about distressing situations, while using all the right language and being so gracious and understanding of everyone involved is such a difficult thing to do. Such an empathetic person.
Only one thing I know not true for many airlines (according to VPs who make the rules not just not cabin crew like this lady): upgrades will go to commercial passengers first not standby staff - especially if they have rewards members, they want frequent flyers to a) have a really good experience and spread the word that the rewards schemes are worth it and b) let frequent flyers experience the higher cabins so they get a taste for it and might book it next time. Emirates always upgrades skywards members when they can. Dressing smart and being nice (not demanding) is a must though.
From personal experience, it's actually the pilots who decide who gets what seat! At least with the airlines I've travelled on. It's the Captain's decision at the end of the day - he decides who gets what upgrade/seat depending on who's listed to fly. Companies obviously want to publicise the fact that they prioritise their frequent fliers (to incentivise people to buy), but staff travel actually comes first most of the time. Emirates might be different, but the UK airlines I'm familiar with prioritise staff travel (especially if the passenger is travelling with a crew member).
As a young teen, I was coming back from Europe with my parents. We landed at JFK and then I threw up all over baggage claim, so we were late to board our flight to Seattle. My dad, ever the professional, asked to upgrade me to 1st so I could sleep (1st class in 1979), as it was mostly empty. They upgraded me while my parents were in business class and the flight attendants hovered over me making sure I was okay for the whole flight....I got amazing sleep and felt better when we landed in Seattle.
@@robertcristianoros1293 hi, flight attendant here as well, you can get some medicine for nausea, it makes people drowsy after 30 minutes so if you take it before boarding, get seated, and keep your seatbelt visible so we don't have to wake you up, you'll have a nice long sleep fairly easily :) Avoid driving afterwards if your flight is short as the effects last several hours!
i think she meant 1/20 flights she personally flies, and cabin crew flying long hauls fly around 4 or 5 rotations a month, so it would be once every few months :) and i fly short/medium hauls and it doesn't happen as the lavatories are in our galleys anyway. So once every few months only on big aircrafts that fly long haul. It's not that often! (unless you combine all flights in the world then it must be a hundred times a day or more probably lol)
Airline food being extra-salty may explain problem I had in 1964, fit, sporty aged 17, 24 hour journey in 3 stages, London to Singapore, I arrived with swollen feet. Never suffered that since. Ate all the meals, probably had loads of "free" salty snacks which I loved in those days.
As a former funeral director the thing about "rigor mortis" setting in and then the person couldn't fit in their coffin is 100000% wrong. Rigor is broken easily by moving the limbs and, once broken, does not come back. It also breaks down naturally if not forced.
19:02 100% correct on not enough female pilots, however it IS improving. Roughly 5% of ATPL pilots (the ones flying you around places) are female, however we now have 15% of all student pilots being female which is a huge improvement. I attend flight school currently and our male to female ratio is pretty good if I'm honest. Probably 1 woman for every 4 men. Interestingly, India has 3 times as many female pilots on a professional level than most other countries. Even less common is female aircraft mechanics. Less than 3% are female... so if you want to break barriers, that's a great place so start.
I’ve flown my whole life and did not know why the chairs had to be upright lol not anything else like the tables . This gracious lady was so informative, and sweet . I do know cabin crew are very tough and very trained as she said 😍
The statistics say over 80% of people survive aviation accidents but that statistic does not specify accidents into categories like only including those that were a total hull loss vs things like a bird strike, uncontained fan failures, fuel exhausted, etc. where there was repairable damage and maybe some nail biting moments but still finished with a runway landing. Even a total hull loss has had large numbers of survivors such as US Airways ditching in the Hudson river in NY where everyone survived with only a few minor injuries even though the aircraft was a write-off.
About the radio signals. The ILS frequency ranges from 108 to 112 MHz. There is nothing in the cellphone with that capability. 2.4 GHz or 5GHz for wireless, 800 MHz, 1200, etc for mobile network. Nothing on 108 to 112.
That's a stupid comparison. 50-60 years ago, ticket prices are the same as first class today. 90% of passengers today won't be able to afford to fly at all.
One thing she said that is wrong, statistically if you look at historical data on crashes, the further back in the plane you sit the more likely you are to survive in a crash. The seats over the wings are less effected by turbulence, but sitting closest to the huge wings full of fuel isn't ideal for survivability during a crash.
it really depends on the type of crash you have, which part of the plane impacts first, etc. sometimes the front is thrown clear of a fire. if you look up united flight 232, you notice the captains in the very front survived, a lot of people seated around the middle survived unscathed, and the front and rear was mostly fatalities - all the survivors from the front and rear were severely injured. it really depends on the accident.
nope the seats over the wings are the safest purely because they are the safest exit passage of the plane. its a statistic that aero safety experts all agree on.
I feel like the answer to the question on why the seats, window blinds, and tray table need to be up during take-off and landing needs more detail and I will attempt to provide it. The riskiest parts of a flight is the take-off and landing, it's where the pilots have the least amount of time to react to any emergency situation. Should an emergency occur at this time, the airplane will have to either crash or crash-land very quicly which then means you'll have to get out of the airplane very quickly. Having your tray tables down will impede you from getting out quickly in a crash, the seat infront of you could also deform from the crash preventing you from putting it back up too causing you to have to wrestle with it in the fire and smoke to get out. Similarly if your seat is reclined, in a crash it's going to impede the person behind you from getting out quickly - so that's why when the airplane is close to the ground, you're required to put the tray tables and seats in a position which allows quick exit. As for the window blinds, it's about giving your eyes the time to adust to the outside lighting so that in the event of a crash, you exit the airplane quicly and your eyes are already adjusted to the outside light so you can find your way away from the crashed airplane fast.
I would also like to elaborate more on the airplane mode bit because some people have asked how is it that a $500 phone can interrupt a $100,000,000 airplane. Mobile phones are always searching for cell signals 24/7 where your phone sends out a ping to the cell tower every few seconds just to inform the cell tower that your phone's connected to it and waits for a ping back from the cell tower to confirm. On the ground when your mobile phone senses that the cell signal is weak from the cell tower's reply, it will automatically boost its own transmission signal to make sure the signal it sends out can get to the cell tower - this is why your battery also drains faster if you have a weak cell signal. If you don't put your phone into airplane mode when you're in an airplane, as the airplane takes off the phone will sense that the cell signal is weakening and will keep sending out stronger and stronger pings to try and reach a cell tower until a point where the phone is just sending pings at maximum transmission power. One phone doing this alone isn't likely to cause issues with the airplane unless the airplane itself was struggling to pick up a very faint signal from the ground or from satellites. I can't find any information on any airlines incidents involving ditching that resulted in anyone being eaten by sharks. The closest I've come is ALM Flight 980 which crashed in shark-infested waters, but no source claims that any of the 23 fatalities were shark-related. I would be interested if anyone else could provide information, because that sounds wild to me. Further, the airplane mode claim has been debunked so many times it's almost getting boring. I'm sure she's told so many passengers by now that she truly believes it. I suppose it's not harming anybody.

I only say *possibly* because the incident you mention was not a controlled emergency landing on water (aka a water ditching) but an uncontrolled crash due to malfunction with the plane. It seems that this flight attendant is possibly confusing/conflating various incidents so it's difficult to know for sure.

It's likely that another person has mentioned this, but I have been told by a cousin of mine - a retired commercial pilot, and a couple flight attendants, that while passengers can give flight attendants trouble - they told me there is sometimes conflicts between flight attendants simmering just below the surface. As for me - I think most flight attendants are great!
for obese customers, I heard you can buy two seats as is expected, but sometimes you can apply to the airline after the flight and if they were not full on that flight, some airlines will reimburse you.

Your phone just isn't listening the signals now. 30 yr FA for AA. I was the Purser (Inflight manager) on an overnight flight to LHR. Got a call that 2 passengers had snuck into the back restroom. We listened at the door & quickly knew what they were engaged in. We grabbed a piece of paper & made a “Welcome to the mile high club” certificate & about six of the crew all gathered around the lavatory door waiting patiently. The door unlocked and the young lady stepped out. The crew whooped and cheered stating loudly “Welcome to Mile the Club”! Loud enough the entire back of Economy class all turned to see what was going on. The cheering continued until the male came out & the both of them slinking back to their seats in very bright shades of red. We must always be in constant supervision of the cabin & lavs so the chance of not getting caught will be slim to none.
Do that in 2024 and get sued. 🤦🏾♂️

Really do people think it seems glamorous it doesn’t seem glamorous to me stuck in a metal box for hours on end with your ears blocked breathing that horrible filtered air and there is nearly always someone on the plane with the worse BO. I worked for Virgin Atlantic as an engineer for 31 years at Gatwick airport, during that time I was on shift three times when somebody had died during the flights. As ground engineers we would keep a discrete distance to let the crew and emergency services go through the necessary removal of the deceased. But of the three, there's one occasion that stands out. The aircraft arrived and the passengers were disembarking, when there was only a few left on board there was a sudden rush of the crew for an "emergency" in the rear cabin. Apparently someone had died during the flight, his family said it wasn't unexpected, he had been terminally ill, he'd made it through his family holiday and almost home again. But about a couple of hours out from Gatwick he sadly passed away, his family decided not to call the crew, or alarm and distress the other passengers. So they proped him up in his seat and made it look like he was asleep. When the cabin was almost empty they told the crew, which is when pandemonium broke out as they rushed to get the medical gear to try and revive him, his family stopped them and explained before they went into action. I thought it was so thoughtful of the family not to cause distress to the other passengers. Of course once the crew knew exactly what had happened the deceased and his family were, as normal in this situation treated with the utmost respect, care and discretion.

That's a remarkable story. Terminally ill people usually don't die in a plane seat. They get so progressively weak the last days of their life that it wouldn't make sense to board a plane a few hours prior (barely conscious, breathing problems...). Something more acute must of happened there. That in turn makes it bizar that the family didn't alarm anyone. I'm not judging, just very weird situation.

cabin crew are so underrated both in nominal flight and in an emergency. i really appreciate them. listen to the safety presentation - the cabin crew are there to make sure you have your absolute best shot at surviving if things go wrong, and more often than not, you WILL survive.

As a muslim who has prayed on a plane several times. I always did it while sitting on my seat to not disturb anyone and be respectfull. In special cases you can pray while sitting down. I never understand people that lay out something on the floor in an airplane. I think most of those people are just showing off and that is not commendable at all.

9:04 When I was in the Army we were encouraged to wear our service uniform when flying coach. I was almost always approached by an attendant and offered an upgrade to business class. One time I was kicked up to first class, with complimentary alcohol. I've always thought of it as one of the more tangible ways of saying "Thank you for your service."
I have the greatest respect for Flight Attendants. Its often a difficult and unpleasant job, performed in trying circumstances. 99.9% of FA's I have encountered have been lovely, and they have to be lovely even when they are exhausted or unwell. Thank you to the FA's!
My dad tested those life rafts in The English Channel in 1948.
They were developed at HMS Cardington during and after WWII.
He volunteered for the job after seeing them in a pretrial. He told me he volunteered because after 8 years serving in the Royal Australian Navy, he knew that these were as close to the perfect piece of survival equipment that he had ever seen. It's not just the raft but the survival equipment on board, (an inflatable solar still for distilling fresh water, fishing lines and hooks etc).
He was the CPO Safety Officer HMAS Sydney during the Korean War.
They have improved the design over time, with the introduction of new materials in the manufacture, but the concept has changed very little in 80 years.
He told me that his six days in the autumn of 1948 was the best paid holiday he ever had, despite the horrible weather and being stuck on a raft with two Poms.
On my last flight all of the crew onboard were female. They got a standing ovation before takeoff and after landing. Everyone was so happy to see 2 females flying the plane and backed by an all female cabin crew.

As for female pilots, when I got my Private Pilot's Licence the examiner who did my General Flying Test was a lass who on her seventeenth birthday passed her driving test AND flew her first solo!
On the ground she was all laughing and joking, but as soon as we boarded the aircraft she switched to all-business and was the most professional pilot I've ever met - her attitude got me to realise instantly the seriousness of what we were doing, and the level of responsibility you have as a pilot. She later went on to fly 747s for British Airways,
I would want her flying me over any other pilot, any day. It's just a shame that if she was a pilot of an airliner in which I was a passenger, I couldn't visit her office.

I was boarding a flight to Spain and the captain was at the aircraft door greeting us passengers. When my ex realised the pilot was a woman he tried to convince me to leave the flight. He actually visibly paled when he cottoned on.
He was an uptight nightmare the WHOLE flight which further peed me off as I’m a nervous flyer.
I dumped him but had to stay in the booked apartment with him for the whole week 🤦🏻♀️.
And some men wonder why we still feel a bit picked on and singled out.

13:20 airplane mode. She's right on most things, but wrong on this one. The ILS beacon is in a different frequency range. There are international laws and agreements on what frequency bands are used by telecom and other users, specifically to prevent what she's claiming. It does, however, quickly drain your battery because your phone keeps trying to connect to cell towers that aren't there.
If something so dramatic as losing an ILS signal could happen, phones would be permanently banned on board.
It's to avoid the fairly small risk of interference with any of the airplanes electronics. If they did not insist on flight mode the airplane electronics would have to be designed, tested and regularly re-certified compatible with full strength mobile/cellular phone signals. Some commercial planes flying today were built before cell phones even existed.
@murdo_mck yes, but it depends on what frequencies they operate. The bands don't overlap, and that's by design. The age of the aircraft doesn't change the regulated frequency bands.

If terrorists could bring down planes with a phone or a similar device, they would never be allowed in.
Regulated devices really send very weak amounts of energy, won't do shit to any cable that is at least somewhat protected (even on the level of the average $2 usb cable). Even devices that don't respect norms and try to send as much energy out as they can are very likely going to hurt you and people next to you first before actually doing damage to the aircraft.
The real reason is they don't want passengers to be distracted by their devices during critical phases of the flight
5G can have a negative effect on some aircraft auto land capabilities, but I'm not an expert on if there is anything beyond that technically. Mostly tho, I think they just don't want people yaking on phones while in the air and/or want passengers to NOT be distracted during critical phases of flight.

I heard that "altitude changes tastebuds" explanation so often... But A), I've been to altitudes of close to 6000m, and stuff still tasted fine, and B) I brought plenty of my own food on planes and even a cheap ass sandwich is normally tastier than the crap which is in those trays...
There's definitely something to that though, because there's scientific truth to tomato juice tasting better in planes, it's insane! I always prefer it on a flight over on land. 😅
I thought the same - if you bring nuts, fruits etc they taste the same as on the ground, you've eaten them many times, you'd notice if it was different.
It's not just the pressure, but the extremely low humidity on board. Modern planes like the 787 and a350 have higher humidity but the majority or planes have humidity below 10% (where I live on the ground humidity is usually 70-80%)
Ya i've brought high quality takeout veggies/salads/etc on a plane and have never noticed a difference up in the air. I think her reason on this one is BS

This is so interesting! I’ve always been hugely fascinated by how airplanes operate and this gave me some new insights that I haven’t heard before. I know a lot of people have a fear of flying, but I always look forward to it and love the whole airport and flight experience. Maybe that’s because I don’t travel often for it to become tedious!
Talking about distressing situations, while using all the right language and being so gracious and understanding of everyone involved is such a difficult thing to do. Such an empathetic person.
Only one thing I know not true for many airlines (according to VPs who make the rules not just not cabin crew like this lady): upgrades will go to commercial passengers first not standby staff - especially if they have rewards members, they want frequent flyers to a) have a really good experience and spread the word that the rewards schemes are worth it and b) let frequent flyers experience the higher cabins so they get a taste for it and might book it next time.
Emirates always upgrades skywards members when they can. Dressing smart and being nice (not demanding) is a must though.
From personal experience, it's actually the pilots who decide who gets what seat! At least with the airlines I've travelled on. It's the Captain's decision at the end of the day - he decides who gets what upgrade/seat depending on who's listed to fly. Companies obviously want to publicise the fact that they prioritise their frequent fliers (to incentivise people to buy), but staff travel actually comes first most of the time.
Emirates might be different, but the UK airlines I'm familiar with prioritise staff travel (especially if the passenger is travelling with a crew member).
As a young teen, I was coming back from Europe with my parents. We landed at JFK and then I threw up all over baggage claim, so we were late to board our flight to Seattle. My dad, ever the professional, asked to upgrade me to 1st so I could sleep (1st class in 1979), as it was mostly empty. They upgraded me while my parents were in business class and the flight attendants hovered over me making sure I was okay for the whole flight....I got amazing sleep and felt better when we landed in Seattle.

@@robertcristianoros1293 hi, flight attendant here as well, you can get some medicine for nausea, it makes people drowsy after 30 minutes so if you take it before boarding, get seated, and keep your seatbelt visible so we don't have to wake you up, you'll have a nice long sleep fairly easily :) Avoid driving afterwards if your flight is short as the effects last several hours!

i think she meant 1/20 flights she personally flies, and cabin crew flying long hauls fly around 4 or 5 rotations a month, so it would be once every few months :) and i fly short/medium hauls and it doesn't happen as the lavatories are in our galleys anyway. So once every few months only on big aircrafts that fly long haul. It's not that often! (unless you combine all flights in the world then it must be a hundred times a day or more probably lol)

Airline food being extra-salty may explain problem I had in 1964, fit, sporty aged 17, 24 hour journey in 3 stages, London to Singapore, I arrived with swollen feet. Never suffered that since. Ate all the meals, probably had loads of "free" salty snacks which I loved in those days.
As a former funeral director the thing about "rigor mortis" setting in and then the person couldn't fit in their coffin is 100000% wrong. Rigor is broken easily by moving the limbs and, once broken, does not come back. It also breaks down naturally if not forced.

Rigor Mortis only lasts around 8 hours. Placing a deceased person in a lavatory would have no effect on them fitting in their coffin/casket
19:02 100% correct on not enough female pilots, however it IS improving. Roughly 5% of ATPL pilots (the ones flying you around places) are female, however we now have 15% of all student pilots being female which is a huge improvement. I attend flight school currently and our male to female ratio is pretty good if I'm honest. Probably 1 woman for every 4 men. Interestingly, India has 3 times as many female pilots on a professional level than most other countries.
Even less common is female aircraft mechanics. Less than 3% are female... so if you want to break barriers, that's a great place so start.
I’ve flown my whole life and did not know why the chairs had to be upright lol not anything else like the tables . This gracious lady was so informative, and sweet .

The statistics say over 80% of people survive aviation accidents but that statistic does not specify accidents into categories like only including those that were a total hull loss vs things like a bird strike, uncontained fan failures, fuel exhausted, etc. where there was repairable damage and maybe some nail biting moments but still finished with a runway landing. Even a total hull loss has had large numbers of survivors such as US Airways ditching in the Hudson river in NY where everyone survived with only a few minor injuries even though the aircraft was a write-off.

About the radio signals. The ILS frequency ranges from 108 to 112 MHz. There is nothing in the cellphone with that capability. 2.4 GHz or 5GHz for wireless, 800 MHz, 1200, etc for mobile network. Nothing on 108 to 112.

One thing she said that is wrong, statistically if you look at historical data on crashes, the further back in the plane you sit the more likely you are to survive in a crash. The seats over the wings are less effected by turbulence, but sitting closest to the huge wings full of fuel isn't ideal for survivability during a crash.
In the rear is more likely to survive the crash but in the front is more likely to survive the fire so pick your poison.
it really depends on the type of crash you have, which part of the plane impacts first, etc. sometimes the front is thrown clear of a fire. if you look up united flight 232, you notice the captains in the very front survived, a lot of people seated around the middle survived unscathed, and the front and rear was mostly fatalities - all the survivors from the front and rear were severely injured. it really depends on the accident.

I feel like the answer to the question on why the seats, window blinds, and tray table need to be up during take-off and landing needs more detail and I will attempt to provide it. The riskiest parts of a flight is the take-off and landing, it's where the pilots have the least amount of time to react to any emergency situation. Should an emergency occur at this time, the airplane will have to either crash or crash-land very quicly which then means you'll have to get out of the airplane very quickly. Having your tray tables down will impede you from getting out quickly in a crash, the seat infront of you could also deform from the crash preventing you from putting it back up too causing you to have to wrestle with it in the fire and smoke to get out. Similarly if your seat is reclined, in a crash it's going to impede the person behind you from getting out quickly - so that's why when the airplane is close to the ground, you're required to put the tray tables and seats in a position which allows quick exit. As for the window blinds, it's about giving your eyes the time to adust to the outside lighting so that in the event of a crash, you exit the airplane quicly and your eyes are already adjusted to the outside light so you can find your way away from the crashed airplane fast.
I would also like to elaborate more on the airplane mode bit because some people have asked how is it that a $500 phone can interrupt a $100,000,000 airplane. Mobile phones are always searching for cell signals 24/7 where your phone sends out a ping to the cell tower every few seconds just to inform the cell tower that your phone's connected to it and waits for a ping back from the cell tower to confirm.
On the ground when your mobile phone senses that the cell signal is weak from the cell tower's reply, it will automatically boost its own transmission signal to make sure the signal it sends out can get to the cell tower - this is why your battery also drains faster if you have a weak cell signal. If you don't put your phone into airplane mode when you're in an airplane, as the airplane takes off the phone will sense that the cell signal is weakening and will keep sending out stronger and stronger pings to try and reach a cell tower until a point where the phone is just sending pings at maximum transmission power.
One phone doing this alone isn't likely to cause issues with the airplane unless the airplane itself was struggling to pick up a very faint signal from the ground or from satellites. However if all the passengers in the airplane had their phones not in airplane mode, you're talking about 100 or more phones all blasting pings at max transmission power trying to reach a cell tower and the resulting massive bursts of transmissions can interrupt the airplane's own trasmitters and receivers trying to reach something far away on the ground.

I can't find any information on any airlines incidents involving ditching that resulted in anyone being eaten by sharks. The closest I've come is ALM Flight 980 which crashed in shark-infested waters, but no source claims that any of the 23 fatalities were shark-related. I would be interested if anyone else could provide information, because that sounds wild to me. Further, the airplane mode claim has been debunked so many times it's almost getting boring. I'm sure she's told so many passengers by now that she truly believes it. I suppose it's not harming anybody.

The crash she is referring to is that of Birgenair Flight 301 which occurred on the 7th of February 1996 and was the joint-deadliest aviation incident involving a Boeing 757 (along with American Airlines Flight 77) having a total of 189 fatalities. Furthermore, Flight 301 is the deadliest aviation accident ever to have occurred in the Dominican Republic.
It was caused by erroneous airspeed readings.
There was evidence that some of the recovered bodies had been 'mangled' by sharks and life rafts were found floating in the area. But obviously no one knows how many of them had survived and were subsequently eaten or attacked by the sharks.

@@NotInAsia thanks for the info, that's interesting and is quite possibly what the lady is referring to. I only say *possibly* because the incident you mention was not a controlled emergency landing on water (aka a water ditching) but an uncontrolled crash due to malfunction with the plane. Also, there was evidence of shark predation on some bodies but not surviving passengers being attacked by sharks as is claimed. It seems that this flight attendant is possibly confusing/conflating various incidents so it's difficult to know for sure.

So I think that's the official hypothesis. But the media reported them being eaten. I guess it's more news-worthy. So that probably just existed in her memory.
It's likely that another person has mentioned this, but I have been told by a cousin of mine - a retired commercial pilot, and a couple flight attendants, that while passengers can give flight attendants trouble - they told me there is sometimes conflicts between flight attendants simmering just below the surface. As for me - I think most flight attendants are great!
for obese customers, I heard you can buy two seats as is expected, but sometimes you can apply to the airline after the flight and if they were not full on that flight, some airlines will reimburse you.

@13:28 this makes no sense... if you have your phone in airplane mode. All the signals coming off the cell tower and still going straight through the plane and straight through your phone. Your phone just isn't listening the signals now.
This would be like me telling you to close your eyes, that way you can walk out a 5 story window, since you don't see the ground, you will just float on the air.
