Good choice of a feature, nice to hear from someone other than an ex gangster, trafficking victim or hostage.
Bored scumbag women prisoners will have a go at her if let.

I could listen to an entire series of Vanessa talking about her experiences shes an absolute natural communicator and what fascinating career she has had.
Shaun Attwood has her talking about her experiences for over two hours on his channel. It was very interesting. I think it's his newest video, or second newest
@@K-a-n-d-i-sthank you
and she has a book out, The Governor… on audible too!
She's been potted in Jail. Let me tell you something: no governor gets potted in jail unless they're an absolute bully that mistreats people. I don't think you could possibly imagine the beat down you're about to get if you do that to a governor in prison. Trust me, I've spent many years behind the door and been in 21 different prisons. I'd bet you my last pound this woman is an abuser who has mistreated inmates. Anyone who's been behind the door understands this. BTW, being potted means having a bucket of excrement and urine thrown over your head. Good officers are respected by inmates because they are few and far between. So many officers are psycopathic, narcissist, cluster B types who beat, humiliate and abuse their positions and often mistreat the most vulnerable mentally ill inmates.
@johnsmith - lol ,talk about a biased viewpoint . let's cut to the chase , prisoners don't have rights.
That's a weak position to take . once you get out of prison ,assuming you do , then some ' rights ' are reestablished , but when you are in the can yo deserve to be treated horribly .
Vanessa is exactly the sort of person you would want running a prison. Tough, no nonsense! And she tells great stories too!
I agree. She comes across as tough but fair
She really is a great storyteller!
You don't send sheep to imprison wolves ,you have to be extremely tough to do this job ,let alone be a governor ,extreme respect for this woman

It's easy to see why this lady was a Governor, she has a real presence. I can imagine she was pretty formidable when running a prison. She strikes me as someone who doesn't suffer fools gladly but also kind enough to see things from a fair and rationale point of view.
She strikes me as someone who would go down after one strike and could never do her job without a load of men allowing her to.

What a great lady, so intelligent, so interesting, so entertaining. She should get a regular slot.
Absolute respect to this lady, what a lady, she deserves a medal for her life, Vanessa have a very long and happy retirement, you are amazing
My late husband was a prison officer before I met him. He was medically discharged after ten years and had to have psychiatric counselling. He had nightmares til the day he died 20 years later.
I'm so sorry. You have my sympathies. I can't imagine how he must have felt.
I'm so sorry your late husband experienced such damaging trauma in his job. I have utmost respect for him and for his service to our country. He kept us safe from monsters. I'm very grateful x

Always really interesting to hear from extremely experienced public sector workers and their time in public office.
such a brilliant powerhouse of a lady! Your service and obvious humanistic approach to your career deserve the utmost respect
What she said about evil was a terrifyingly salient point. Despite all the factors that can contribute to a person's morality (external and internal) evil is ultimately a choice, you _choose_ to do it. It's a sobering realization that when we're desperately looking for a explanation for why an individual did something appalling - often under the misguided attempt to convince ourselves that "normal people don't do such things" - we are in reality ALL capable of doing evil. A moral framework is a hair's breadth away from carnage and cruelty.
The men and women who ran the Nazi death camps, brutalising prisoners and murdering them en masse, had all been everyday civilians themselves 6 years earlier. Most of them then slithered off to civilian life afterwards, too 😒
Well yes, are you better off coming to terms with your dark impulses and not doing them or lying to yourself you don't have them and not being able to deal with them when circumstances tip you over the edge or many other psychological bumps in the road? Even psychopaths have the ability to intellectually make choices to do right or wrong. Of course you wouldn't hear about those that don't seriously break the law because even if they know they're usually not going to announce the fact they're psychopaths.
Speak for yourself.
@@stealthwarrior5768 Did you actually read my comment stealthwarrior? I think perhaps you didn't.
Those who believe in the genetics lack of free will idea would disagree with you. That's a much more uncomfortable answer than the one that we can all choose for ourselves.

The humanity this women shoes towards prisoners is amazing . I hope others can live up to her standards.

This lady seems like she is the exact right person for this job. Really good interview and top person
I could’ve listened to this lady’s story’s all day. She was incredibly articulate and it seems that she remained professional throughout her career. What a shame it was only a short interview!
Drinking tea made by Myra Hindley like it’s nothing. This woman chose the right career path because I couldn’t have done that 😂
I was also surprised about that, especially as she later told that was the position she would have tried to get as a prisoner herself because it can give you intel on the guards and makes you come closest to them. That’s quite a tricky position for one of the most dangerous women in UK history.
I bet she makes a crap brew
true loool
I think to do a job like that you have to put your prejudices aside. Not sure I could have either
I would drink the tea, but I wouldn’t go for a walk on the moors with her
Its so refreshing and obvious she is recounting real memories and stories. Not bullshitting for social media clout.
I admire this very strong & forthright woman who spent nearly all her working life in the Prison service. She knows what she’s
talking about and says it straight out, no flowery language, no dressing anything up. She is one tough cookie and needed to be
to have any credibility in her workplace and those serving under her.
Could listen to her all day! Fascinating and such a great manner about her! Someone get her an audiobook contract!
She is a wonderful speaker. Great communicator.
And I particularly liked how she emphasised that the doctor was right to make the decision to send to hospital. And that the staff did the right thing releasing the prisoner. My heart goes out to those people
I could honestly listen to Vanessa’s stories all day, very engaging and gave honest answers which is rare. I can see why she was governor, amazing woman
This woman is a total class act. Massive respect.
As soon as I heard the question "Which film or TV show best represents prison" question, I thought that Time would be the one so I'm so glad she mentioned it. Sean Bean and Stephen Graham, two of our greatest actors, an excellent script, excellent supporting characters. I loved it. There's a follow up on the way I'm happy to say
It's much the same for hospitals, hospitals aren't as interesting or exciting as tv portrays it. As noone is hooking up during shifts, we're too busy.
This is the most interesting interview I've watched. I'd love to watch more from this amazing person. She should write a book. I'd definitely buy it.

I love listening to people who speak so honestly and eloquently about their life experiances. A pleasure to watch.
I'm 66now and time in prison and borstal destroyed me mentally. I have self harmed since I was 17. I couldn't cope after being with my nan for the weekend and she died while I was reading the Sunday paper letter page to her. I had 2friends at school and one died a week or so later. I now have 3adult children and a 6year old grandson. Since I left prison for the 3rd time I lost my baby with a heart defect,my brother died and I had breast cancer twice. I can't cope. So many awful things have happened since recently.
And my daughter just out of an abusive relationship after years. Lots going on around it still. His family stick up for him because they believe his lies. He posted naked photos of my daughter online and she woke to him under the sheets taking photos or videos of her naked body. I'm so angry.

Great interview, really interesting woman with some good stories. Thanks for your work, Vanessa, you come across as firm, competant and compassionate and those attributes in combination are rare to find in the prison system.
I was in a prison in Norway for 3 months or so as a so called "civilian worker" as I decided I had enough of being called into military service for a week every year. Anyway in those 3 months lots of things happened, I learnt a few things about humans and how they can behave. In terms of working in a prison I observed that the prisoners of course mostly were miserable, negative and depressed, but so were the guards. So I could never have worked in a prison, well not unless it was one of my last options as a job. It's a depressive environment.
Could you please tell some things you learned about people?
@@JimmyHandtrixxprobably not going to prison 😂
