  • I always find discussion about voices interesting, so today I'm having a look at a video of Miley Cyrus discussing how her voice has drastically changed over the years, and why! I had to get surgery on my voice before, I was scared I wouldn't be able to speak or sing again! However, you end up learning a lot about how to take of it.

I think it's a great sub-topic to the autotune issue. Miley is one of those singers who might have lost range and clarity, but her voice has gained so much character and personality by now being more 'imperfect'. There's so much more humanity to the sound of a voice that isn't pristine.

Thank you for this Justin. I had a vocal injury for 10 years - a cyst on my vocal cords, that was difficult to spot/diagnose. Manifested in me losing my voice every other day, and it often hurting to speak. It was an incredibly isolating, upsetting chapter of my life. Especially as an aspiring actor. Now 3 years post surgery and speech therapy, healthy and recovered voice - I never take it for granted!

I love when Justin sings the theme song fresh every day. You just never know what he’s gonna do or what will happen. Recorded just wouldn’t be the same.
Really good points. Miley learned to embrace the changes in her voice. She sadly did a lot of damage to her voice unknowingly, but she sounds just as effing amazing - she’s just deeper now. I like to call that the sexy voice.
I had polyps on my vocal chords as a child that went away in their own, but I had a super deep voice according to my mom. As a teen, I had asymptomatic GERD that burned a hole in my vocal chords. I sounded like a man for months and had to rest my speaking voice. I also had a sexy voice for around 10 months that very slowly healed with medication, dietary changes, and sleeping with an angled wedge so I wasn’t flat.
I always worry when I see singers who smoke, don’t rest their voice and body after a gig. I always wonder when it will catch up with them. Maybe Mylie’s experience will inspire Justin, and any of his fellow pro musicians who may be watching, to do as much as possible to take care of their vocal chords and bodies so we will enjoy their instrument for many more years to come.
Look how many brilliant singers have lost their iconic voices after facing medical issues and/or the effects aging. Caring for yourself gives you the best chances of not being one of those people who lose their identities. The same way a guitarist (or their tech lol) maintains their guitar with daily wipe down, using a protective case, occasionally swapping strings, and making repairs as needed, singers gotta do what it takes to maintain the voices they rely on for income . . . and we adore. It’s worth consulting with vocal doctors and therapists every now and then to learn about your specific voice, check for any minor damage before it gets worse, and above all, heeding their expert advice.
    Thanks Justin!
    ❤❤❤

If anyone doubts her chops, they should check out her performance of "Say Hello to Heaven" at the Chris Cornell tribute show. You can tell the audience is skeptical when she comes out. Personally, I was addicted to drugs from 18 to 30 years old. Started a band in my late teens with a new friend, and we partied and made some of our best songs then. Literally sitting with one guitar each for 24 hours and writing and playing. It ofc went to heavier stuff. But I’m happy to say we are both clean today. Most people say to me: omg you f***ed up, you must regret that so much. But I tell them, absolutely not! It was the best time of my life. We made music, wrote songs. And I learned so much from that whole experience. I’m convinced I’m stronger and smarter today because of all that.

Everybody's voice change by the time, not only because the life style, but the effect to growing old.
But in my opinion the most of singers get better the way to sing in spite of the voice evolution, because you earn better style or better techniques. It's what in Spanish call "tablas", the translation to English is "board"...i honestly don't know the reasoning to use this expression.
In fact there are singers who keep doing great performances even thought they are older or have had a hard lifestyle.
Justin, i think that you must have a strong personality if you got to separate the rock star persona of the Justin Hawkins person in order to get a healthy lifestyle.
And to tell us, because you are an awsome rocker on the stage but you haven't to die in it.
I applaud to you when you talk in this terms.
I like very much the Justin Hawkins person who you show us by this little window which is your channel.
I love drinking beer, but i try to do it only once in the week end, and every time i stand up less drinking alcohol...
Caring of ourselves is good, and i like people who promote it. Like u.
I don't want to you think that i tell compliment by tell them... I think it from the heart. Go on being the way you are now.

having reinkes edema was the hardest part I've gone thro vocally and mentally... mine came from over use, age and I had developed a hiatus hernia so the acid had free flow to my vocal cords... I (on the other side) did have the luxuary of being and ordinary unknown so I took time off, rearranged things in the music and gave myself time to heal.. yes the bank and bills suffered from it but all I kept thinking was "health first!"

I was in cover band during hair metal and had to sing up to 35 songs that were performed by other singers a night. When we had to do 2 consecutive nights, I could barely speak the day following the 2nd gig.
My diaphragm use at the time was not as good as it is today and that made it even worse.

Totally agree, she sounds kinda interesting with that damaged voice (at least when singing, not so much a fan of her talking voice). A while back stumbled upon a performance she did on the Howard Stern show and it was really, really good. The studio stuff sounds a bit too polished for my taste but Live it's great, really enjoyable. And she's an absolute badass performer.

The thing with the `everyone should experiment` is that you get people like me (and you too Justin) Those that have no control over that experimentation, which soon goes from rare experiences into common experiences into addiction at a VERY rapid rate! Then if you are dedicated to that then before you know it youve lost decades of your life, decades in prison or decades off your life!

    • @stiffk666
      @stiffk666 10 місяців тому

I agree. I was one of the lucky ones that spent my late teens and 20's partying and experimenting and dropped it just before my 30's. I did enough partying to last a lifetime and goddamn I had some fun and never regretted a single minute but I'm very happy to never go to another rave or have any substances ever again. It's not until you sober up you realise not everyone is as lucky and can't choose to sober up before it's too late. It feels very much a lottery.

I agree that Miley has a great tone to her voice now. And a heaviness and tone that is deeper and separate from that of her father. Even though he does good covers of Billy Idol when he wants to, her voice actually has more bottom end and it would be cool to hear her cover "White Wedding."
