I loved Limp Bizkit in high school and I'll still listen to them occasionally today. Most of their music is as simple as this; turn up loud, forget about your worries, yell some fun lyrics. On a serious note, any band that lives in the "we don't fucking care about anything" space will always find some popularity with youth who also don't really give a fuck about anything.

I was definitely at the right age to think that Limp Bizkit was cool. Had the red backwards hat and this was the first album I got on Napster 😆 I know it’s garbage lyrically, but the technical prowess of the band is surprisingly good for what is essentially “pop rap metal”.

I saw Limp Bizkit at Sonisphere, Knebworth, 2014. Up to that point on the Friday it was a dead festival.
They could see that the crowd needed lifting and they absolutely delivered. After the opener everybody was bouncing!
I was with a number of seasoned metal heads and none of us could resist! I was a great, great ride.
The Prodigy headlined and there is no doubt in my mind that it would not have been anything like the same epic gig had Limp Bizkit not set the crowd up for utter abandonment beforehand. Yes it’s dumb, but that’s the point, it’s an indulgence. And I think that there are parallels there with the indulgence that the Darkness so skilfully provided as well.

Subjectively, I loved Limp Bizkit growing up. It was counter culture, attitude, rebellious for the sake of being rebellious. It tied in with both rock and rap culture and Fred Durst seemed really cool to us 12 year old middle class white kids that never had a real problem, and were just fuelled by hormones.
Objectively, however, the band itself was fine, just like any other, but Fred Durst really is an anomaly. He has produced some of the worst lyrics of all time (Hey kids, take my advice, you don't want to step into a big pile of shit), and he spoke, dressed and acted like a teenager when he was in his 30s, which is I think why Limp Bizkit have been the subject of such ridicule over the years. This being said, there is no LB without Fred, and would they have been as successful without the loudmouth manchild as their brand ambassador? Probably not.
One thing's for sure, there's not many other bands that can do what Limp Bizkit can do, for so long, so successfully, and whatever you think about them, you have to respect their success and longevity.

    • @filgus497

the problem is it wasnt some kind of punk ethos, it was pure toxic masculine destruction for the sake it it. thats not counter culture, thats counter productive. fight the system, dont fight your own means of rebellion.
musically i never liked them so maybe im biased. but i also think they were a cultural blackhole in the form of a bunch of misogynistic fucktards
