That first record was / is epic, Justin. Thanks for the tunes, man. My life is much better due to music. These questions were absolutely fantastic. Very well thought out. Bravo, everyone! 👏👏👏🔊🎶👍
My comment is that I always notice the number of subscribers increasing each time I visit 'JHRA" (a shortening which on viewing in written form looks like an organisation who might try to help folk or society in general?) Fitting really as this channel seems to make people happy. Warm, informative, funny & friendly. No wonder the word is spreading of its delight. Keep on keeping on, Justin, good stuff, man ✌️
Justin, you are the sweetest man! Thanks for the music AND the laughs. Caught your fantastic show here in Phoenix Arizona this past spring and had a great time!💁♀️😻💋
G’day Justin. Quick question: When you are touring and you play an iconic venue, do you ever take a moment to think about the legendary bands who played on that stage in the past? I have to assume there must be a little personal thrill in preening on the same stage Freddie stood on, or the Beatles played, etc. (By the way, I just watched Phantom of the Paradise, as promised, but that is a discussion for another day).
Hello! I am new here and I wanted to express my feelings for your channel...I LOVE IT!! Omg! And I never heard of you but then I checked out who you are and who your band is and found that I had already had 2 of your songs in my "like" file on spotify!! I've been binge watching your videos and me and my hubby are just loving you!! Plus- your voice is AMAZING!
I first heard the darkness coming out of a window from my neighbors house. The riff just stuck in my head for days. I had pretty much given up on new bands, but when I heard PTL it inspired me. I was soooo sick of everything being so damn depressing. That album from start to finish takes you on a ride. I'm still hoping to someday be a part of a band that can capture that energy. Have come close a few times, but usually my ex band mates wanted to fit in with "modern music" so I end up walking away. That album will always have a special place for me!
I keep trying to listen to your music (here on UA-cam) but I am totally distracted by your incredibly insightful, emotionally and intellectually intelligent, honest, vulnerable and just darn great talking. It is rare the person behind the music is as brilliant as the music. Ta
thanx for the shout, Justin! even tho you didn't get to my question, that still made my day! rock n roll...! Quick Q; Boddington's or Guinness? (or Murphy's?)
One of the better moments I ever witnessed live at a show was when I at the RUSH 35th Anniversary Tour, Alex Lifeson completely boned a section of his solo...the entire band continued, looking at him with smirks, when he stopped and hit that off note again and looked to the audience and said, "That's Jazz baby...Jazz..." Awesome moment. Even the GREATS flub...
I remember buying the CD of Permission to Land in 2004. It was probably one of the last cds I ever purchased in a store. I had it with me on a work trip to West Virginia. I remember listening to I Believe in a Thing Called Love while walking through the U of W. VA campus. anyway. not interesting. But, UA-cam didn't exist then. But, it still feels like yesterday.
The music industry must change constantly. Especially recently with the internet and being able to release your own material. The genre’s that are popular have changed a lot in the 30 odd years I’ve been into music seriously. From enjoying your channel I have been recommended your band on UA-cam. I’ve become a fan. Especially of your videos, they are funny.
Yes, I was recording an album with Producer Steve Albini. We did one take of a song, and at the end it became a "train wreck". Then we did it again perfect. Steve kept the first take and it became our "wipe out song" particularly at the end. Ha ha ha.
Hey Justin. I remember coming to see you at a pub in Lowestoft, and you returned the favour coming to one of my gigs at your Aunty’s place The Swan. Loved The Darkness, and as a front man of a band myself I always looked to you as a bit of an idol! So glad I’ve stumbled upon your channel. Love to you and the family 😄
The songs an artist creates are in a way like a child.A parent will always love it but not so much with the average listener or reviewer. You've explained it well and with honesty.
First heard you on the radio when I was working lates. It was love on the rocks with no ice. Thought it was brilliant. Went to hmv and ordered the e.p. then went and bought p.t.l..Got all your albums and think this blog is brilliant!
I have a fond memory of wandering the streets as a teen with my friends whilst Permission To Land blared out of my backpack. I used to hook up my CD player to some old, D-Cell powered, pc speakers like some kind of geeky boombox.
I know it's an unpopular opinion but my absolute favourite, if any one darkness album can rest above the others is one way ticket... I adore every single track and the b sides such great vibes
Finally, a darkness fan who puts this album at the top. Thank you... I agree, it is definitely the best, more purest and exciting album of theirs. I will never understand peoples and the band's dissatisfaction with it.
I also agree. So much clever wit in the lyrics with great variance of music and of course the RTB and Queen influences are major pluses for me. How could you not smile at lyrics like "I may not be your Mr Right, bit I'm happy to be that''ll do for the night".
I love maple fretboard strats. that's what I play. I just got a hot rail to throw in the bridge of mine. pretty excited. the color is Olympic pearl with a tortoiseshell pickguard. it's really cool.
Eric Nally blew me away with his onstage movements when I saw him support you. The energy is insane. Saying that, the whole band were insane. I remember saying "I don't know what the hell I'm watching, but I love it".
Cool You give the older Queen song as an excample ... She Makes Me ... its like Breathing in Rythme with it ... Such a good song always gives me the positive shivers ....
So.... still excited that ive stumbled upon your channel. I love your perspective on music & artists. Learning all about The Darkness has been awesome too. Your just compelling and i get sucked in and thoroughly entertained.

Like I’ve mentioned before I was never a fan of the darkness!but since getting too know you thru this podcast you are truly amazing and I’d say that the way you can break down a song and then play it in a few minutes your like some kind of musical savant! I love that you are so knowledgeable about music and now I have total respect for you! I’m going to have to catch you live sometime?your manners are impeccable and you don’t swear breath of fresh air!good luck from your new fan credit where credit is due !like the haircut but it does make you look like t bone!all the best ian&suki the Hawkdog
While Justin is a true gent the not swearing bit will go to naught should you see a show… hope that doesn’t stop you though, they are one hell of a band 🔥
the 2 greatest rock stars of them all (imo of course)- Jagger and Page, they were the best at a number of things, very very much including genius level posing...
Been a Darkness fan since the start, even took my mom to see them. Even have a white Les Paul (sheer coincidence). I recognize the difference between 'best album,' as in most iconic or most recognizable vs. 'favorite,' and while Permission to Land will surely win out as the former, Hot Cakes is my latter. The delicious resurgence of that album infused my blood with a hair-blowing giddy that will likely never go away. When I behold the beautiful creation that saved me from an abusive relationship many years ago the song With A Woman often plays in my head.
Good to see you still kicking around Justin was a massive fan of the Darkness as a kid. Got a sub from me, fascinating hearing your takes on things pal.
Do you feel that you’re a guitarist that sings or a singer that plays guitar? Which do you think you’re better at, considering that pretty great at both?
Speaking of your albums… How would you rate them…My top three would be permission to land, one way ticket, Easter is canceled… Easter is canceled might actually be number two…Confirmation Bias is a real hidden gem…
Dammit, Justin. Here I am comfortably middle aged and smugly self-satisfied in my musical tastes, and here you are opening my ears to Van Halen, White Snake, fackin A-ha. Point is, you hear and see something that I hadn't, that I had once unthinkingly rejected. Wunderbar, but my question is this: What are the boundaries between "good taste" and bad? High and low. Are labels put on musicians ever useful, or are they all bollocks? Can a song n one era that seems like crap actually be a masterpiece 10 years hence? I was listening to "Children of the Sun" by Billy Thorpe the other night--a childhood lark. But in absorbing some of your ways of listening to music recently I just tried to turn down the volume on my own reflexive way or hearing things. Revelation. Suddenly that track fuckin kicked my aassss. So what's the line between "good" rock 'n roll or "bad"? Why can one song that seems like fookin shaaaaiiittttte in one era seem like genius in another? I'm not sure I can tell anymore, and I'm not sure I care. Sorry for the boringly rambling comment, but I wanted to thank you for that.
My favourites are don't let the bells end , barbarian , I believe in a thing called love , all your music and style is great makes my day your videos thanks 👍
The "mistakes" comment is interesting. I've invested a lot of time into writing music and honestly sometimes hitting the "wrong note" or different part of the fretboard has actually landed me in a better place for where I wanted the song to go. It'll be interesting to see how my songs change if I ever get the chance to play them on a stage! Lol.
Wow 150k followers now I remember when you first started and there was only a few hundred followers Last of our kind is my favourite album. Open Fire is my favourite song. Loved your look back then and Emily’s drumming
Not just a great musician, not just an excellent vocal, not just handsome but also has great fashion. I always go for great music first but the fashion never hurts.
Speaking of stream of consciousness, there's a story that Ryan Adams, a Y'allternative singer/songwriter based in Nashville, abandoned his usual set list at a gig (as I heard it, it was Dublin's Olympia Theater in the mid to late 00s) and tried to make up songs for the rest of the set!
Rob Trujillo (Metallica) has fantastic stage presence, it was a major selling point for him getting the gig, although he still would have got it on chops alone.
Regarding mistakes at a rock show making them better. I was in Vienna when Dan's pedal board gave up the ghost. Justin came over and said 'let me look, yeah that's f*cked'. My mate actually bought the recording of that show from the merch booth for that reason. Great show.
One Way Ticket is how I got into The Darkness. Heard it on K-Rock in NYC & a new favorite was born. When the station went talk radio, I was pissed. It was the only decent radio station in the NYC area, & the only that played The Darkness. Needless to say, I had to (& still do) purchase each and every CD. Yes, actual hardcopy. And Hot Leg? Omg, fantastic! Love Trojan Guitar! Is It Just Me? is definitely a close 2nd favorite Darkness song, probably because the video was fucking incredible.
On the subject of uniforms, you could argue that having a band aesthetic is a uniform of sorts. Each spice Girl was unique, each member of the Doors was unique, Lynrd Skynrd, too. But weren’t they all kind of the different flavors of the same ice cream in the end? They were unique but at the same time kind of the same. Btw, I absolutely adore One Way Ticket. It’s so over the top, full of great riffs and great lyrics.
yeah you could almost swap out "uniform" for "look" I think its important for a band to have a "look" unless it is their "look" to not have a "look." Personally I think being provocative is the most important thing. Maybe even controversial. Blue jeans and long hair used to scare the masses but not so much anymore...
It's actually very rare for a band to all have the same uniform, The Hives are the only band I can think of in the last 20 years who wore literally the same clothes
wow, we play very similar in style.. Rock Baby! -To answer her question.. my youth definitely creeps back in. Suddenly I can still jump -feet to mic.. lol but, that following morning ... ouch
Hey you! Saw you in Cleveland, OH in 2004. Anyhow, great channel! I literally walk around the house belting out "Juuuuuustin Hawkins Riiiiiiiiides Again.... Aaaaaaagain!" all day. Thanks :)
Justin, wondering if you would care to listen to a currently small US band called Momma, their latest three tracks are 'Lucky', 'Speeding 72' & 'Rockstar'.
On the question of bass players who move about, it would be remiss not to note Steve Harris. Guy runs round the stage like a defensive midfielder in the middle of a cup final. There's a rumor that Bruce Dickinson got an extra-long microphone stand to fend him off from centre stage.
I really like One Way Ticket. Dinner Lady Arms and Blind Man the most on that album. When the album came out I still had hair. But now Bald, is no longer funny. 😁
PTL is an all time classic. I’ll never forget putting the disc on for the first time and being met with the opening riff of Black Shuck. Having said that, I reckon everything released since Hot Cakes has been pure 🔥🔥🔥
Hi Justin! as a passionate amatorial singer I'd like to make you some quiestion: even though you are a professionist are you constantly taking lessons with a vocal coach? Or you do everything on your own? Would It be possible to have a video about your vocal warm up? Thanks a lot and really appreciate! I have lots of fun with your videos!
I would absolutely love to see you react/review some 00's pop punk, Sum 41/Blink-182/Good Charlotte/The Offspring/Paramore and bands of that ilk. I really hope you can find the time!
Only having seen some music videos, I bought Permission to Land at a distant flea market (sorry) and I had a blessed drive home. My favorite music is tenor sang classic rock/power pop that is more crunch than jangle, so it was destiny.
Justin just hearing you say it’s not your place to judge your music makes me respect you even more I’m not into ego because you don’t get anywhere in life by yourself so why all the me me me stuff never understood it
Justin, you mentioned going backstage and how people want to relax backstage. How do you handle going from the adrenaline of singing at Wembley to then "normal" life where you have to take out the trash. Is it hard? I would think this would be tough going night after night with the up and down.

Was singing it in my car just today. 😁

I randomly sing it about 8 times a day.

That first record was / is epic, Justin. Thanks for the tunes, man. My life is much better due to music.
These questions were absolutely fantastic. Very well thought out. Bravo, everyone! 👏👏👏🔊🎶👍
Not “an artist’s place to review their own material”...The struggle is real!
Keep on keeping on, Justin, good stuff, man ✌️
I love your chat Justin. You are quite a thoughtful insightful person. More power to you!
Welcome to the Fold !
Welcome to the amazing world of Justin Hawkins 😁💜🙏
I first heard the darkness coming out of a window from my neighbors house. The riff just stuck in my head for days. I had pretty much given up on new bands, but when I heard PTL it inspired me. I was soooo sick of everything being so damn depressing. That album from start to finish takes you on a ride. I'm still hoping to someday be a part of a band that can capture that energy. Have come close a few times, but usually my ex band mates wanted to fit in with "modern music" so I end up walking away. That album will always have a special place for me!
I echo this sentiment completely!
...why didn't you use the door like everybody else?!
I like these episodes. It's the only time I feel like you acknowledge the UA-cam viewers.
I don’t drink!
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain sorry bub, I should've known.. bad Q... I hung it up too. thanx again Justin.
Don’t worry about it, I just can’t answer that particular question accurately!
One of the better moments I ever witnessed live at a show was when I at the RUSH 35th Anniversary Tour, Alex Lifeson completely boned a section of his solo...the entire band continued, looking at him with smirks, when he stopped and hit that off note again and looked to the audience and said, "That's Jazz baby...Jazz..."
Awesome moment.
Even the GREATS flub...
Justin mate you're mint, thank you for your content
Permission to Land literally made me fall in love with rock and I haven't looked back since, thanks Justin!
It is indeed interesting, man. Music is a time capsule of our life. Good shout you have of that song. 👍
Sometimes a “mistake” in a live show can lead to a new way of playing the song if it sounds good to the artist(s)
Yes, I was recording an album with Producer Steve Albini. We did one take of a song, and at the end it became a "train wreck". Then we did it again perfect. Steve kept the first take and it became our "wipe out song" particularly at the end. Ha ha ha.
Definitely - we do that all the time / the song will find a way to live - if a ‘mistake’ is how it starts; great
I like the things that started out as mistakes later kept in like in pennyroyal tea, or God save the queen
You guys were pure joy at Leeds festival back in 2004.
When The Beatles came over from Liverpool and played in Feb 11, 1964 they all had matching suits AND haircuts! That's like a uniform.
"I don't think he's ever seen his shoes" - I love this line :)
First heard you on the radio when I was working lates. It was love on the rocks with no ice. Thought it was brilliant. Went to hmv and ordered the e.p. then went and bought p.t.l..Got all your albums and think this blog is brilliant!
Man, I love your Music Tag! And what a sweet voice you have. Really enjoying your thoughts.
"Girlfriend" was a misfire of a single in my opinion. They were trying too hard for a crossover
My absolute favorite album. Epic.
Thank you so much for answering my question! Those moments must be the greatest!
After Permission To Land, I really love Hot Cakes. Fantastic top to bottom. Everybody Have A Good Time is possibly my favorite Darkness tune.
Favorite version of Growing On Me ,Reading,2003. Rock On !!!
So.... still excited that ive stumbled upon your channel. I love your perspective on music & artists. Learning all about The Darkness has been awesome too. Your just compelling and i get sucked in and thoroughly entertained.
Before the Dorkness was Charles Bronson , now the Dorkness is Charles Bronson ..... Justin Bronson U changed every cool persons life for the better and U are the best okie in music and on earth .. rhanks for all yr wonderous input in all artistic peoples lives ... we see you , love you
I believe in a thing called love - just something something something from above!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
You're awesome, keep it up!
Thanks Kristoffer!
Loving your videos so much, that I like them before I start to watch them now! 😜
the 2 greatest rock stars of them all (imo of course)- Jagger and Page, they were the best at a number of things, very very much including genius level posing...
Thanks! The best ….
Thanks Ken!
Do you feel that you’re a guitarist that sings or a singer that plays guitar? Which do you think you’re better at, considering that pretty great at both?
Good question. 👌
He's has answered this on a previous video. Can't remember which one though!
Lol.
Wow 150k followers now
I remember when you first started and there was only a few hundred followers
Last of our kind is my favourite album.
Great show.
In the time since the channel began, you have become one with your intro theme song. It flows out of you like fine wine
Btw,
I absolutely adore One Way Ticket.
It's actually very rare for a band to all have the same uniform, The Hives are the only band I can think of in the last 20 years who wore literally the same clothes
saw you fellas in wellington the other day, great gig man.
wow, we play very similar in style.. Rock Baby! -To answer her question.. my youth definitely creeps back in. Suddenly I can still jump -feet to mic.. lol but, that following morning ... ouch
I have yet to check out your music (Darkness) but I do enjoy hearing your eloquent speak about many 'a things.
Hey you! Saw you in Cleveland, OH in 2004. Anyhow, great channel! I literally walk around the house belting out "Juuuuuustin Hawkins Riiiiiiiiides Again.... Aaaaaaagain!" all day. Thanks :)
Great episode!
Thanks!
Robert Palmers addicted to love vid,
Great uniforms were sported by great ladies,
That one definitely worked 🥰
@ghost mall defo 🥰
I absolutely love Motorheart and Easter is canceled!!! I listen to them both daily!
PTL is an all time classic. I’ll never forget putting the disc on for the first time and being met with the opening riff of Black Shuck. Having said that, I reckon everything released since Hot Cakes has been pure 🔥🔥🔥
Black Shuck is a killer song.
Hi Justin! as a passionate amatorial singer I'd like to make you some quiestion: even though you are a professionist are you constantly taking lessons with a vocal coach?
Justin just hearing you say it’s not your place to judge your music makes me respect you even more I’m not into ego because you don’t get anywhere in life by yourself so why all the me me me stuff never understood it
I always remember my gran saying... "The Eagle of Fame takes no prisoners!". :0/
Justin, you mentioned going backstage and how people want to relax backstage. How do you handle going from the adrenaline of singing at Wembley to then "normal" life where you have to take out the trash. Is it hard? I would think this would be tough going night after night with the up and down.
