An important function of droids in Star Wars stories is being the chorus, a trope uses often by Shakespeare. Droids also function as a symbol of discrimination, often treated as second class, often ignored, commonly thought of as expendable. Inequality/inequity is the another pillar of Star Wars. (Professor Huyang and a few others are more the exception rather than the norm.) Also, droids can mark time as well as be as constant as mentioned in this segment.
When we first meet Huyang he mentioned past events like the battles of Rashfond to the Peace keeping of Polion. I would love to see those events take place in a novel or comic.
If you pay attention he does that with so many of his videos. He has lived a life that has brought him to the point where he wishes to share what Wisdom he has learned to others freely. Hopefully there are those that not only listen to it but learn from it.
@@williamjanak2013 i often wonder, assuming he went to college, what Alan studied. philosophy? economics? sociology? he seems to have a good grasp of all of these fields, plus a few more
Huyang has so much value that it’s easy to overlook, because he has such a wealth of knowledge with wisdom that spans thousands of years while organics can barely grasp the extent of a couple of years for they forget what it’s like to be young and few can only plan a few years ahead and think they know better. But instead of being bitter about young organics he tries to help them. He has probably learned all these things the hard way so that is why he will say things like stick together, hoping that they might just listen for once.
He knew exactly what the Jedi Order _should_ have been when it decayed before the War. But he probably had to keep pretty silent on the matter; they wouldn't want to hear or believe they were wrong, and might have frozen him out entirely if he pressed the matter instead of giving little nudges.
Imagine the trauma of having witnessed 25k years of prosperous Jedi history just to see 4 years of sheer incompetence and arrogance-induced blindness cause the ruin of such organization, both physically and ideologically. Worst of all: having witnessed those 25k years of Jedi victories over the Sith just to see the Order being destroyed for taking DIRECT orders from an infiltrated Sith Lord. Even a droid can understand such emotional punch, it's too much for anyone. post note: that Koala pic got me rolling 😭🤣
To be fair he did see the order shrink and grow many times over specifically during the time of Darth Revan when the republic and order were nearly destroyed entirely
@@Spacemarine658 but never as "pathetic" as taking direct orders from an Infiltrate and then be extinguished by the hands of their supposed "own" soldiers
You have various Jedi turned Sith with Exar Kun, Revan, the great hyperspace war, the over 1000 years of war of the New Sith Wars culminating in the battle of Ruusan, and the Ruusan reformation. The Jedi Civil War saw the death of Jedi across the galaxy, from the death of the Miraluka home world to random assassinations. The Jedi were completely eradicated down to a handful of "Lost Jedi" trained by the exile, Jolee Bindo and Bastila Shah
Palpatine and his master for decades corrupted the Jedis' mission more and orchestrated a clandestine takeover. There is of course Jedi incompetence and the fact they haven't prepped for fighting Sith.
As a grandpa with three grand kids.....my job is to pass down the things taught to me, to help raise them to be better than me. As a parent you get a diamond in the rough that you cut....as a grandparent you polish that diamond. I think Professor Huyang is much like a grandfather to the jedi......he has seen the story replayed over and over and tho you can point out the right path to a youngling.....in the end the youngling has to be the one to choose their path.
I am so happy that Huyang was brought into Ahsoka. What little screen-time he had in the Clone Wars, he still made his way into my heart. Love this android, and I absolutely love that he has not had a memory wipe in 25,000 years (if any wipes at all). It's an amazing fictional case study of a droid that has not only been around for thousands of years, but has not had a memory wipe, too. The effects it has had on his personality and knowledge are clear to see, from a certain point of view, of course. 😉
His stability is also astounding. There are much newer droids that go for only a few years without even partial memory wipes and develop terminal processing glitches, let alone psychotic character traits. It may have something to do with when he was manufactured, or that he may have been a one-of-a-kind experiment that just got it right. Are there, or were there, any of the same model existing?
@@ckl9390 YES! This is a point I forget to bring up. Thank you for reminding me, I forgot about that. I remember, I forget which Star Wars show it was, I think Clone Wars the animated series when R2 was kidnapped (I believe) and I think someone was giving Anakin a hard time because he never wiped his memory, and it was brought up how if routine memory wipes were not performed that it caused irradicate and unpredictable behavior in droid's. Thanks for the reminder, apparently my memory has been wiped, haha.
I like to think that due to the jedi programing and life experience he has truly retained a good portion of their ability to process the hardships of life. he has learned to apply the knowledge of the jedi, not just recite or teach it, but to partly live it.
Who else think Huyang needed his own series after this? Of course, it can simply focused on the certain important events in the galactic history. But what is great about this is that it showed us how he always survived what the galaxy threw at him. To be exact, how the heck did he survived the Sacking of Coruscant by the end of the Great Galactic War anyway? I wanted to know about that because that might be also how he also survived the end of the Clones Wars and the even the Galactic Civil War as well.
When the camera panned to show huyang looking at Sabine’s helmet heartbroken fuckin hurt, then when he said “they should have stuck together, they never listen” broke me. Even though he’s a droid he’s one of the most human characters David Tennant has absolutely knocked this role out of the park into the lot across the street
Would love to see Huyang in (Tales of the. Jedi) season 2 depicting how He assisted padawan (Tar Vizsla) getting His kyber crystal for The Dark Saber. 😂
I've always loved the way Hu yang spoke and acted, but this just gives me so much respect for him. It's so easy to forget that he is in himself the history of the republic and star wars as a whole
7:37 So, if Huyang’s name translates from Chinese as “protect” and “raise”, does that mean that his name could literally mean something along the lines of “guardian”? Not literally in Mandarin, but in a sort of “Filoni-poetic” way. Just a thought…
Alan, I can tell you’re a much deeper person than the internet sees while you make Star Wars videos. Hope life’s treating you good man! Edit: the philosophical tidbits in a lot of your videos make you one of my favorite creators.
Such an awesome concept and opportunity a single individual. He's never had a memory wipe, has a solid personality overall, much like Artoo, albiet far older. This guy is a droid who feels old, not by the appearance of rust or any broken pieces, but rather, his very viewpoint and outlook on the galaxy. Such ancient experience and Wisdom is quite something with regards to a very influential mentor. If he dies... imma be mad. 9:45 lmao, bro, that diss😅
Ngl I wasn’t the biggest Old Republic fan - mostly because I never got to play those games. But honestly after this show, it’s making me want to actually play those games and start getting deeper into the Old republic/High Republic Lore. Crazy how we have the same opinions on our expectations coming into the show - as well as with your recent video on Teva Carson
That moment when Huyang said "They never listen." when ahsoka and sabine disappeared, at 11:53. That scene hit me hard in the episode. Huyang is definitely my fav character and disney be damned if they let anything happened to him in this show.
Writing this out makes me wonder if there could be a "long lived" droid in the service of the Sith. Thoughts, anyone? I'm so glad you made this video because I was having similar thoughts as you about his longevity without a mind wipe. My head canon is such that he can (or has) go/gone so long without getting wiped because of the very nature of the people surrounding him. If a droid picks up traits of the people around it, then a droid to the Jedi order would surely be pretty level headed and thoughtful. This is the way.
In the Mandalorian, it was nice to hear the droid side of the service. The gist: organics created them and are fragile, they might as well serve to the best of their abilities.
Aka, you made me choke up a bit in this one. I would never write this to content creator--especially on UA-cam but you ARE my favorite channel. Please, keep the good work.
To have immediate recall of every moment in such a long life would be amazing and terrifying at the same time. I have so much more respect for this character after considering all this. Outstanding video! Thank you.
Hey Allen, I popped onto your channel when COVID hit. Hadn't been on for a few months because of life, thought I was subscribed and just watched a bunch of your content, love the direction you've taken the channel and subscribed! Keep it up.
Honestly, before Ahsoka released. The most interesting thing about the droid was he was voiced by David Tennant. (The 10th/14th doctor, for those who don’t know who he is)
Most important question is: How Huyang manage to survive? With his ennormous memory about Jedi Order we should assume he would be very important target for Palpatine and Vader. How he evaded whole imperial machine? Fact he, as droid, cannot be sensed throu Force of course helped, but still professor was too important for Jedi to let him tunning around. Not even mention knowledge obsessed Palpatine definitly would want to get acces to Huyang memory.
I strongly suspect that Huyang's sassy attitude toward Sabine isn't just to be brutally honest, but also because he likely has the best grasp of human psychology in the galaxy. He knows how bull headed Sabine is and knows that if he tells her she can't do something, she will dig her heels in and focus on the task. Some truly genius writing.
It is the worst feeling when you give your wisdom to those you care for only to find out they did not listen to you. That is one experience throughout my 43 years of life I can relate to Huyang's grief.
I need to take a moment and let you know I really dig your lighting background in your videos; not so much this one in particular, but many many of your others. You keep picking hues and shades for the ambient light that make my eyes feel happy in some weird way. Strange sounding I know, but thanks, dude!
Huyang was made to be a servent of the Jedi acrchive and for light saber designing. Plus he has never been forced to do things against that original purpose. For that reason he has never had a need to be "wiped" from conflicting instructions.
Unfortunately I never watched all of the Clone Wars or Rebels, but when I saw what this droid was capable of (ship repairs, analysis, sparring and actual fighting, as well as right and proper ADVICE), I knew he was a real one. Better than C-3PO and any other droid companion to date. I love the amount of genuine wisdom and care he shows for others unlike the other droid companions. I've only known him for 5 episodes and I already love him as my favorite.
@@CasualInTheTrees Easier said than done. That show is 7 seasons long and I don't really have the time to be watching all of that before I can really get to know Huyang's original appearance. (Actually I saw clips of it on UA-cam so I know how he first appeared)
It is to my regret that there is so little crossover fanfiction between Star Wars and Keith Laumer's Bolo stories and novels. A Bolo would fit right in. They would fit in with no problem at all.
Always high-quality commentary, but this was especially good. Huyang is easily Top 5 Star Wars characters for me, and I've only known about him a fraction of the time compared to most others.
It's characters like HuYang from Star Wars and Kaim Argonar from Lost Odyssey that make me second guess my dream of immortality...My fear of death and being forgotten clashing with my fear of loss...
Yo how did Sabine's helmet fly off her skull when she got thrown against a tree? Did she not have it sealed and locked like ANY other Mandalorian? Hell, Din Djarin has been thrown around alot worse and his helmet stayed in place.
Huyang has always interested me as a character, mostly because of just how old he is and how much he's seen in his years and also how he becomes much more human than droid as time goes on
So insightful as always brother I really appreciate your content it's a nice change of pace from the events of the really real world but mirror them so beautifully horrifying

It occurs to me that huyang is probobly so stable specificly beacuse he interacted with jedi for so long and is able to use some of there techniques for self control. At the same time he was probobly also insane at some point due to shear entropy.
We need a story ark going through his memories and through them the history of both Jedi and Republic. Maybe Huyang could play a role in Luke and later Reys new jedi order.
I've been wondering why Huyang wouldn't be residing at Luke's Jedi Academy as a droid dedicated to helping raise Jedi. Glad to hear a perspective on it, but I feel it's something worth exploring more.
It really puts into question Do we deserve someone so kind and caring And he'd likely say something profound or simple like What means to deserve if one can't define it then one shall decide it
I liked the droid bar scene because he was talking to Bo Katan, who in another life fought against the Cylons, which were also created by organics, but turned against them.

If you pay attention he does that with so many of his videos. He has lived a life that has brought him to the point where he wishes to share what Wisdom he has learned to others freely. Hopefully there are those that not only listen to it but learn from it.
@@williamjanak2013 i often wonder, assuming he went to college, what Alan studied. philosophy? economics? sociology? he seems to have a good grasp of all of these fields, plus a few more
Thank you. I really liked this episode. With the breakdown of Huyang. It shows the brilliance of David Tennant's acting. Even in voice.
Huyangs dismay at his squad getting wiped out because stupid resonated too deeply.
@@tufab3494 plenty did but you are right nothing on the scale of the clone wars
Palpatine and his master for decades corrupted the Jedis' mission more and orchestrated a clandestine takeover. There is of course Jedi incompetence and the fact they haven't prepped for fighting Sith.
As a grandpa with three grand kids.....my job is to pass down the things taught to me, to help raise them to be better than me. As a parent you get a diamond in the rough that you cut....as a grandparent you polish that diamond. I think Professor Huyang is much like a grandfather to the jedi......he has seen the story replayed over and over and tho you can point out the right path to a youngling.....in the end the youngling has to be the one to choose their path.
polish and spoil hehe
This is one of the most heartfelt episodes for a droid ever.
David tenant is one of my favorite actors . And he pulled this off amazingly
I like to think that due to the jedi programing and life experience he has truly retained a good portion of their ability to process the hardships of life. he has learned to apply the knowledge of the jedi, not just recite or teach it, but to partly live it.
that would truly humanize him
For a droid being 25,000 years old, you would expect him to have better hands in a fight.
Even though he’s a droid he’s one of the most human characters
David Tennant has absolutely knocked this role out of the park into the lot across the street
Your content is incredibly thoughtful and dare I say, inspired. Very much appreciated. Keep it coming.
As a diehard fan of the Jedi. Knowing that Huyang survived the purge, brought me so much joy its unreal.
7:37 So, if Huyang’s name translates from Chinese as “protect” and “raise”, does that mean that his name could literally mean something along the lines of “guardian”? Not literally in Mandarin, but in a sort of “Filoni-poetic” way. Just a thought…
“It’s like poetry, it rhymes” George Lucas
It's a little more clever than something like Savage Opress
Alan, I can tell you’re a much deeper person than the internet sees while you make Star Wars videos. Hope life’s treating you good man!
Edit: the philosophical tidbits in a lot of your videos make you one of my favorite creators.
Alan, really enjoy your content and observations. In a fandom full of loud noise you’re a fan in the best sense. Keep it up and thank you!
I'm hoping Huyang keeps a backup of his memory, so that all of that won't be lost if he dies.
Love your ability to put everything into perspective with your star wars videos
Ngl I wasn’t the biggest Old Republic fan - mostly because I never got to play those games. But honestly after this show, it’s making me want to actually play those games and start getting deeper into the Old republic/High Republic Lore. Crazy how we have the same opinions on our expectations coming into the show - as well as with your recent video on Teva Carson
Outstanding video, great job!!!!
Your content isn’t just about Star Wars, you actually teach people important information
Dude you are so deep, I rather now think about Star wars as a Droid story
Thank the maker for Generation Tech. I must say my favorite channel. There's nothing on UA-cam to watch today.
Thank you for this masterful character study.
Alan, do you write this stuff yourself? Your videos are so thoughtful and spot on, both inside and outside of Star Wars.
(The 10th/14th doctor, for those who don’t know who he is)
I really respect you know. Found some deep and wise words for starwars
Most important question is:
How Huyang manage to survive? With his ennormous memory about Jedi Order we should assume he would be very important target for Palpatine and Vader. How he evaded whole imperial machine? Fact he, as droid, cannot be sensed throu Force of course helped, but still professor was too important for Jedi to let him tunning around. Not even mention knowledge obsessed Palpatine definitly would want to get acces to Huyang memory.
2:00 Don't forget the Emotional Support Honey Badger!
Hi! I love Huyang, thanks for making this video!
I guess Huyang will appear in the Dawn of the Jedi. He's only created 24 years after the first Jedi Order was founded.
maybe if the Dawn of the Jedi is the start of a new trilogy or saga he could appear in a sequel.
Love y’all! Keep up the amazing work!!!!!
Love all your work. From your friends across the pond 🇬🇧
Indeed, Allen. One of your best and most insightful examinations to date!
Huyang would also make a good mentor for Jacen Syndulla, who is going to need training. Ahsoka is already training Sabine
You should definitely watch all of Clone Wars at the least
@@CasualInTheTrees Easier said than done. That show is 7 seasons long and I don't really have the time to be watching all of that before I can really get to know Huyang's original appearance. (Actually I saw clips of it on UA-cam so I know how he first appeared)
It is to my regret that there is so little crossover fanfiction between Star Wars and Keith Laumer's Bolo stories and novels.
A Bolo would fit right in. They would fit in with no problem at all.
This made me both sad and happy at the same time and gave me a new perspective droids in the Starwars universe great video
Or the emperor of mankind…
Yeah, immortality would be cool for a few decades then shit hits the fan, psychologically speaking.
He is also a lot better built than most. Still has over half his original parts!
Yo how did Sabine's helmet fly off her skull when she got thrown against a tree? Did she not have it sealed and locked like ANY other Mandalorian? Hell, Din Djarin has been thrown around alot worse and his helmet stayed in place.
There was no sealing hiss sound. Wonder if sealing it is an optional thing? Or just a feature needing to be built into the helmet?
Sabines armor seems to be highly customized, she might’ve removed the seal/chinstrap to make it more comfortable
@draagax One would think it's a normal thing for Mandalorians to do or have though right?
that's probably symbolic, as a mandalorian she should never take off helmet during fight, so now she tried a jedi way, no helmet only lightsaber
@@kahtyman7293 Ironic, as she tried the jedi way once and failed. Should've used a verpine launcher
Huyang has always interested me as a character, mostly because of just how old he is and how much he's seen in his years and also how he becomes much more human than droid as time goes on
That was really good man. Best video yet! Alot of heart!
So insightful as always brother I really appreciate your content it's a nice change of pace from the events of the really real world but mirror them so beautifully horrifying
Good analysis! The show is progressively getting better. I'm excited for each new episode. Not Andor excited, but excited!
Data was always my favorite TNG character and R2D2 was always favorite Star Wars character. I think he saves the day more than any other character.
Your dislike of Chopper is palpable. My favourite droid.
Who doesn’t love that little metal war criminal?
Allen from Generation Tech, that's for sure!! Though I appreciated that he did a piece on Chop that wasn't entirely negative not too long ago. @@isaackim7675
Your into just reminded me of how amazing Andor was. Cant wait for next season.
Very good assessment!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Huyang, the voice acting, the writing makes sure a compelling character i want more
Huyang is _older than Revan._ Older than the Rule of Two. He may have _met or taught_ Revan and/or Bane.
Great video! As per usual an insightful and thoughtful look at the galaxy far far away!
I'm really enjoying these extrapolation videos. I think you have some really useful and interesting things to say.
Huyang is like a protective grandpa
great content! and yes , we love huyang... he definitely has elements of C3p0 in the myth structure.
I never expected Huyang to be one of my favourite characters but damn he became an mvp. I think everyone would want an uncle like him.
You might have noticed that Huyang has a roman centurion vibe going to him.
They should make a Jedi Data book that has little anecdotes from Huyang
I think this could also apply to B1s too like the one stuck in the cell by Obi Wan in clone wars cartoon he was developing emotions sorta human-esque he had a sad realization of cybernetic mortality being stuck in there
It occurs to me that huyang is probobly so stable specificly beacuse he interacted with jedi for so long and is able to use some of there techniques for self control. At the same time he was probobly also insane at some point due to shear entropy.
a gift from the Doctor..... especially if he originally came in a blue box
Maybe he built Huyang 😂
We need a story ark going through his memories and through them the history of both Jedi and Republic. Maybe Huyang could play a role in Luke and later Reys new jedi order.
I've been wondering why Huyang wouldn't be residing at Luke's Jedi Academy as a droid dedicated to helping raise Jedi. Glad to hear a perspective on it, but I feel it's something worth exploring more.
I am in love with this pov, great vid as always but idk I love this
Best video I’ve ever seen keep it up I love what you do ❤
In grew up watching both The Clone Wars and DuckTales (2017), so it was fantastic to hear that Scrooge McDuck and Huyang have the same voice actor.
"a grizzly bear as a walmart greeter." Take me to this Walmart. I have never been to one before but I want to go there!
It really puts into question
Do we deserve someone so kind and caring
And he'd likely say something profound or simple like
What means to deserve if one can't define it then one shall decide it
I liked the droid bar scene because he was talking to Bo Katan, who in another life fought against the Cylons, which were also created by organics, but turned against them.
4:39 this isn’t putting something out the video. This is me coming to a realization that.poyn yang is Dave Filoni‘s R2 D2 (insert mind blown meme)
