My adventures through Nicaragua continued in Nagarote, a town between León and Managua. This town is famous for its quesillos, so I knew I had to pay them a visit! Come with me as I try authentic Nicaraguan street food in Nagarote, Nicaragua!
A lot of the people in town get around in tuk tuks, which you often see in parts of Asia. But here, they’re called caponeras. We caught one for 20 cordobas each, or about$0.56 USD each, roughly $1.20 for the both of us.

Usually, the caponeras can’t go on the highway, but we had special permission since I was filming. Finally, we arrived at Quesillos Acacia.
We headed into the kitchen in the back, where there were two women rolling out and grilling corn tortillas. I watched another woman braid the cheese. I tried a bit, which was hot and almost identical to mozzarella.
Then, I saw the tieste and got a rundown of some of the dishes they make before we headed to the front of the restaurant.
We ordered two quesillos-one in the bag and one regular one. I watched the woman also make a double quesillo with onions marinated with vinegar, a cheese braid, salt, and cream in a bag. The other double came with flattened cheese.
Mine was the double with the flattened cheese. The tortilla was soaked in the cream! It’s like it all melted together. I loved the onion and cheese combination! It was messy, but I had to dig in with my hands. It was so much easier!
The combination of flavors was insane. I loved it so much! Then, we tried the tieste, which was a corn-based drink with cacao. It was really refreshing and came served in a cup made from a cassava shell.
The food was unreal. It was like a sloppy, messy, cheesy double taco. It’s a bucket list item, for sure! I couldn’t wait to try one in the bag!
I ordered another quesillo with a trenza in a bag. It’s the real traditional way to eat them! It soaks up all the cream and gets super messy. You tie the bag, bite a hole in the dorner, and suck the quesillo and cream out through the hole! It was the best!

I used to SMASH quesillos en bolsa from the lunch lady stand everyday at ANS back in the 90’s when my family lived in Managua. They’re the main food I miss from Nicaragua!

You’d have to travel to Costa Rica or El Salvador and then travel from there. At least that’s what ppl I’m familiar with, are doing.

Good Morning! What a lovely town! toot toots (how ever you my spell that lol) looks fun way to use transportation. Who does not liike cheese the onions! Love the cheese pull lol... Was awesome watching her form the different ways to serve it.. Quesillo your making me hungry again The cream.. The cheese.... Get.. In ... My ..... belly lol steals a bite when you put it to the camera :P I also make Tortillas home made the best ever :)

You can see how this guy is been closely followed by police officers, it has support from the government since his companion is a government employee and the country dictators has approved his videos, you can always look at police officers taking a close look at what he says and do. There is a fear from the people that he is with a camera filming videos, I will totally recommend the new videos from TV Azteca, where a journalist infiltrated as a tourist and could live the real truth in Nicaragua, where people fears to talk to journalist, fear the government persecution and fear to talk against the government. I think David took great videos of Nicaragua gastronomy, not people feelings.

David, try and be honest but when you went Trinidad, you must have had a few wrapped Rotis with either curry chicken or goat or shrimp or conch. I am pretty sure you have ‘tabanca’ (when you missing something a lot) for those rotis

Que rico que se ve ese plato que no es típico de Nicaragua sino más bien de mi país según la historia de mi país es original y unos paisanos míos lo llevaron a otra ciudad de Nicaragua que no recuerdo su nombre y ahí comenzó todo y ahora los nicaragüense creen que ese platillo es de su país pero lo bueno que en ambos países se comen 😂😂😂 saludos a todos los nicas.
