  • As countries across Sub-Saharan Africa grapple with the challenges of sustaining high levels of economic growth, plunging commodity prices, and the effects of climate change, revitalizing agriculture must become a priority on the continent. Africa is home to nearly half of the world’s arable land, and farming provides up to 60 percent of all jobs on the continent. But experts predict that food production in Sub-Saharan Africa needs to increase by 60 percent over the next decade to feed a bulging population.
So how can the continent capitalize on one of its biggest assets? And what steps are needed to transform Africa’s agriculture?

I think we should venture into irrigation farming rather than waiting raining seasons, currently we are having a challenge of climatic changes so we have to think on the alternative way that will keep us producing as much as we can. Youth we are now responsible for it

Transformation can take place if the political will power is there to lay down platforms for that. Second, education and skills are indispensable. In order to speed up the venture to a higher-level, this means producing on a large scale, Africa must introduce immediately the use of advanced tools, this means machines or better said agricultural machines. One of the platforms I mentioned above is venture capital, which the State must pay more attention to. The unskilled labour force could improve in a short term to a high skilled level on the field. With the aid of agricultural research institutes, I think Africa, has numerous capabilities and facilities, so that in the end all will rest on the political will as mentioned in the beginning.

Africa had survived droughts before.. The difference today is this is largely the result of the confiscatory land redistribution schemes--- where large commercial farms were taken from White Farmers and broken into smaller plots and given to many who had little to no knowledge of farming or managing the agricultural industry.. In Zimbabwe, over 80% of what were once highly producing farm lands are now non-productive.. The machinery, infrastructure and irrigation systems on the large confiscated farm were left to deteriorate, or sold off as scrap..

      DIAR
The point is Zimbabwe used to be able to feed itself, and because of Mugabe's confiscatory land redistribution scheme, they no longer can.. He also destroyed an economy that largely hinged on its agricultural industry.. Get the point?

Robert Ciulla ....Got it. unfortunatly whats done is done, are there not agriculture schools in place to help teach and raise the next generation of farmers. Farming isnt easy but it is very rewarding. I have no problem with the Govmnts regulating agriculture but outside of that they should step aside

Bring Irrigation system into the country. Connect all rivers and channelize water resources between the nations and different location. I have special project to convert sea water to irrigation and drinking water and willing to help. Your Governments in return can pay me us in Gold and Diamonds as payment. We will help you all.
