A farmer buys a rooster to service his 200 hens. When he gets the rooster into the barnyard, he tells him, "Randy, I want you to pace yourself now. You've got a lot of chickens to service here, and you cost me a lot of money. Have fun, but take your time."
The farmer points him toward the henhouse and the rooster takes off like a shot.
WHAM! Randy nails every hen in the henhouse, three or four times. Randy runs out and sees a flock of geese down by the lake. WHAM! He nails all the geese. Randy runs to the pigpen, the cow pasture -- soon, he's been on every animal on the farm.
The farmer is distraught, worried that his expensive rooster won't even last the day.
Sure enough, the farmer wakes up the next morning to find Randy laid out flat in the middle of the yard, buzzards circling overhead.
The sad farmer shakes his head and says, "Oh, Randy, I told you to pace yourself."
Randy opens one eye, winks, and nods towards the sky, "Shhh, they're getting closer."

The comment about "Nobody's business about how you vote" reminds me of a day way back in 1947 when Truman beat Dewey for the Presidency. I was a little guy just five years old that November. Anyway, I'll never forget when I asked my young father who he voted for and he replied, "It's none of your business". I just have never been able to forget that moment.

As a wood turner I sometimes like the sap wood on walnut. The contrast in color can make for a very striking visual for the finished piece. Other times depending on the style or shape of the vessel I am turning I prefer no sap wood. That being said I think there is a market for both.

Regarding walnut sapwood for bowl turning, you'll find a variety of opinions. It isn't a functional problem to use it, so it's just a matter of aesthetics. I personally don't mind a little, depending on how it presents in the wood.
Bowl turners often do prefer the grain to be somewhat symmetric -- that is, the center of the tree (but not the pith, obviously) in the center of the blank. This is especially true for wood that isn't dried, as it allows the wood to warp evenly. Again, it isn't a hard requirement, just a preference.
I know you're shipping these, so cutting them to blocks makes sense. But if you ever have the opportunity to sell them directly to customers, you can save yourself a lot of trouble. Throw the log on the mill and center (and level) the pith as well as possible horizontally. Make a pass above and below the pith to take it out as best as possible (you can cut on either side of this to make spindle blanks if you'd like). The top and bottom can then be directly cut into blanks (a little bit longer than they are wide, please). Just leave the bark on -- we'll turn it away or even make a natural edge bowl with the bark intact. For really premium wood or blanks you can't move quickly, slap some anchorseal on them or dip them in paraffin to keep them from checking.
(Look for "log to bowl" videos -- often this is done with a chainsaw, but the techniques translate to a mill just as well. There's a pretty good one by Alexander Designs that I just found. He cuts away the outside edge of the bark, but you don't necessarily have to.)

Nice hat Nathan and it is definitely an Amish hat I see here in Lancaster County. I often see some if the men that use black electrical tape for a band on their work hats. They are hand made and I know some women that braid the straw which is then sewn into the hats. But because no one shocks their wheat anymore the long pieces of straw come from S.E. Asia. I remember well years back when farmers still shocked their wheat and corn stalks. The Amish were the last of the farmers that did it. I always love to see the fields in evening or early morning sun and the shadows it made. When I lived in Kentucky there were some small farms where they still shocked their corn stalks. Kind Thanks and I’m looking forward to see that new building going up! Seems like yesterday when you were making beams for your shop. Is there time anymore that doesn’t fly? Many Blessings for Family and Farm! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Order a straw hat from the Grasspad in kansas city mo.
These have more of a western style top like a cowboy hat.
Or better yet a Sombrero from mexico with a larger brim to cover your face.
The hat the grass pad has has vents close to the top for air conditioning helps keep the heat off your head also has a chin strap to keep it on your head if your driving a tractor.
That hat looks like it was made for a Northern clement you need one made for a southern location your closer to the equator thats why mexican hats have a larger brim cast more shade.

Suggestion for the hat. I wore one for years and had a sweat problem. I cut an old, thin towel into 10x1.5 inch strips and would tack one in along the existing inside band. I used rubber cement and when the strip got too gross, just pop it off and tack in a new one. No more sweat in the eyes!

As far as bowl blanks go Nathan, anything burl or birds eye would be nice. But if I could get ahold of the rancher who owns the field across the street from me, I’d have a very interesting log for you to cut. As I am not sure what species of Oak it is, but if it’s live oak it’s a seriously old one to be nearly 8 foot wide. I’m thinking it’s possibly red oak or Spanish oak, what makes it so interesting is what the tree is revealing in the wood as it’s dying since it got struck by lightening about two months ago.

Did not see the tripod or the shadow. I have a hat just like that that does a great job of keeping the sun off when working out in the yard. Great choice.

Nathan, Personally I do not mind sapwood with core wood. Gives a piece character. The parts with the voids at the ends, you might salvage into 3x3 peppermill blanks.

I work for TVA and glove use is drilled into our heads and its second nature to me. I was raised that politics was your business and no one else’s. I wish everybody felt that way because i get tired of seeing and hearing it.

My old JD 1070 has 35 PTO hp, and I can't even imagine that thing leaving 11' of finish mowed grass behind it.

Next time you cut some cedar logs, take a board with lots of bark still attached. and take it up to the house for the cats to use as a scratching post. I have a few ideas for a name for the new property you purchased. 5 Mile Creek; Bruno's Place; Miss (mother-in-laws first name) Place; The Red Barn.

Great video Nathan. I trust the walnut blanks sell fast for you. We took several black walnut trees down when we built our home. I’ve been trying to decide how I should mill them. I think it may be bowl blanks-lol.

That's some nice hat, Nathan. Wear it even if the day's cloudy. UV light goes through clouds all the same.
Black Widows! Lovely stuff!!! This last summer my house exploded in Brown Widows - or "Fake Black Widows" - and those things took over the place. They're everywhere. Don't know where they came from, don't care to find out. They're a nuisance, albeit not a lethal one. Not a fly or bug in sight but getting rid of them and cleaning the cobwebs takes time. Don't want one of my cats munching on one and getting bitten, either.
    Tripod? What tripod?
    Take care, mate.
    Cheers.

My husband gets skin cancer on his neck. He's a redhead who has turned all white, at age 62. He buys hats that had a cloth flap that hangs done in the back and near his ears. He gets them at Walmart or farm stores when on sale.
