IMO, Alex has the coolest head of Pepe's, which is why his face should be on the Pepe's promo ads. Jonas is a cool dude, but he drives a stickboom truck, which means he will have limited experience compared to a rotator operator yes. What actually bothered me the most, was the driver at the end who was hooking up to the trailer. Jonas had to keep yelling at the driver, because the driver was clueless. I don't know why we employ clueless drivers, makes 0 sense to me. This disaster is just going to end up happening again.
@@stellarproductions8888 Josh has made a career on youtube showcasing clueless drivers. 😂 Are they just the easiest steering wheel holders to hire, or the cheapest?
I just found this channel a month ago, and I have learned SO MUCH about the world of towing and recovery... it's my dream to eventually get the hell out the trucking industry and get into wrecker-ops, and I don't think I could possibly find a better guide than Pepe's. Yall really are the absolute pinnacle of this.
Alex is the man, I am not sure he was there to teach Jonas but his vast experience doing this it was natural, kindly guiding Jonas along without ever making him feel stupid. Great teaching Alex and great recovery to both of you
@dane either way everyone has to be trained and if they want to progress in their job then they have to learn new things by being trained! You think after a Police Officer goes through academy they are done? Absolutely wrong! The PD swears them in and then they ride with a FTO for however long that department has set up! I know cause my SIL is a FTO at her department!
Same thing when a person goes through school to get their CDL. Depending on school it's 2-10 weeks and then a company hires them and they go through orientation and will be placed with a trainer for however long the company has in place. Then the STUDENT will be brought back to yard to test out and at that time they are given their semi truck to drive! Ex: when I started in 2000 I went to CDL 5 weeks and then went to a company and company placed me with a trainer for 6 weeks and then they brought me back to Corporate where safety made me do a Pre Trip, driving test on the roadway, some backing obstacles, hooking and dropping a trailer and then I was issued a truck and was a solo driver! Then the company had a policy every year EVERY DRIVER no matter how long they were driving had to do annual testing!
You have to admire the presence that Alex possesses so other capable operators respect his suggestions. OH how I wish I could have viewed the action as the container tipped over and slid down the hill. This was a very interesting recovery. Thanks to the operators and to Josh for the editing and posting.
Great job as always. This job beautifully demonstrates how awesome rotators perform when working in tight areas. With just wreckers, this job would have been extremely hard. With 2 rotators, it's an easy pick and roll. It also seems like wreckers without sleepers are a better option for a smaller fleet. Having the truck a few feet shorter makes it way more nimble in tight areas.
Alota smaller companies around here use sleeper cabs as we're in the middle of nowhere so it's pretty common to need to go beyond your hours to drop a unit
These other guys don't seem to know what they are doing! You were very patient with them and had to tell them everything they needed to do. Great job!!
The story of how it came to be in that position shows how important it is to do the tug test and keep your speed down in parking areas.. Great job overall!
You see when people kinda judge on personnel,Alex understand that so what makes the man, Alex going step by step instructions for Jonas to learn more about the business and the preparation to learn and get better, on the job, That's why Alex the Man.
And that's why always doing tug tests is so important. It's so simple and easy, so why do some drivers skip it? Oh well, it keeps Alex busy, and Alex is an artiste with Big Flipper. Like Josh, he sees all the geometry and all the forces. Thanks for the video.
Most drivers have 2 types of mentality. Either they do a tug or they skip it all together. When in all reality just because you did a tug test does NOT mean the bar went all the across and latched to the other side of the fifth wheel plate! You should do a tug test but while you are out rolling your landing legs up you should get under and look to make sure the bar is all the way across and locked to the side! It doesn't take much to place eyes to make sure it's secure! Especially if the driver is bad winter weather because ice and salt can be in those opening parts of the Fifth Wheel...
I just read the comments again. Why do people who have no training in recovery operations feel they have the expertise and right to criticize the professionals. You can tell by the new wrecker that Jonas knows his job and must do all right.
I was wondering how that happened but as soon as Alex mentioned tug test made 100% sense. If you’re going to drive a tractor trailer tug test is a must for a couple of reasons. Not only doing just the tug test but also look at your fifth wheel to see if there’s any problems with the fifth will not locking properly because the last thing you want is to be going down the freeway and lose your trailer because you didn’t do your tug test or visually check your fifth wheel. 100% driver error. As far as I know when you do a tug test, you’re supposed to actually go forward hence tugging it not push back after you’ve already hooked up to it, but if I’m wrong, Josh correct me.
Tricky recovery there Alex...but you got it....Some bulge on the side of the container...Hope he got there to unload it ok...Stay safe and catch you soon
The video really shows the capabilities of a rotator let alone one as big as Flipper. You're able to get your lifting point over the load well before it gets close to you. That gives you air, but also gives you huge amounts of control between the two lines. And you can even get air during the drag phase, which must reduce damage and risk. Even though Jonas had a longer boom than a lot of the straight wreckers we see, his truck is left pulling when a rotator can lift and spin the load in 3 dimensions. The manufacturer should buy your videos for their marketing material. Thanks to Alex for finding out what happened. I was trying to visualise how many mistakes a properly connected truck and trailer would have need to make to end up there and bend the gate! With the real explanation it all gets much simpler, but I wonder if the load was already shifted so as to yeet the container so far to the left. I'd have expected it to be on its knees by the curb. Unless he really floored it around into the access road.
Two of Pepe's rotators would have made this a simple job. But thanks to Alex for making a good plan. Whatever connection broke, it is fortunate that it didn't fail when the container was suspended in mid air while being up-righted. Does anyone know what they are doing with this tractor and trailer hookup ??
Jonas seems like good people, but in this specific situation the other two trucks seem to be in the way more than anything. I’m Someone with zero experience in The tow world. @@scottpestow3596 Back in the 80s I worked at Arlington Park Race Track (rip) for a electrical contractor. We had a in house operator and a sub contractor operator. Wow! What would they have done without Alex’s instructions? It’s also interesting how the other operator’s line/chain failed like that. Seems he miscalculated, or perhaps ignored the weight of his load versus max load ratings.
Great video. I’ve been watching a lot of this channel and have been enjoying it. Curious question for anybody that has experience with towing. At the beginning of the video-there was three tow trucks-with one in the middle basically right up against the edge of the hill. My questions is-what was the purpose of that? Seems to me that it doesn’t make much sense having a tow truck sitting exactly where you’d want to place the runaway trailer.
Seems they were trying to drag the trailer up the hill with the first truck and could only get so far. At that point they added the second truck off the end to add lift and soon realized they were outgunned and needed a rotator.

They're closing the repair dept. because they can't find anyone with my experience to replace me with!
Somebody needs to teach all these drivers, when they have connected their tractor to the trailer, in addition to tugging the connection, to take a flashlight and get under the trailer and shine the light on the 5th wheel connection and visually confirm that the jaws have completely closed around the neck of the kingpin and are locked in place. Do that every time and they'll never lose a trailer like that. If a driver can't do that, maybe truck driving isn't for them.
Always Always do your tug test combined with driving too fast in a yard like this can get expensive, another thing I found bizarre was no grease around the king pin plate under the chassis
