It amazes me how similar The Pisgah and Daniel Boone National Forest really is.. especially in here in southeastern Kentucky, alot of the trails and old roads you hike and camp is like the ones im always on around here.. thanks for all you do in the videos..
When working as a wilderness patrol ranger in Alaska, I would sometimes encounter people like Luke who wore bells out on the wilderness trails, or jingly keys in Luke's case. Following is what we used to tell visitors, and this notice was used in other bear heavy parks like Glacier in Montana. The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Alaska and other parks in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho, to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid a negative encounter. Due to the high probability of an encounter with a bear, the Rangers advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance, so the bears are not startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them, as this might cause a bear to charge. Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper spray at the bear will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and eyes, and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between a black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, grass, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain SMALL BELLS (JINGLY KEYS) and also reek of the SMELL of PEPPER!. Have a great hike!
I smoked since 1979. On December 12th, 2002 I threw a full pack out the window of my patrol car and never touched another one. You may have simply found an abandoned pack by someone who littered like I did, but for a very good reason. God bless, love love love your videos. You were a constant companuion with me on Night Shift before I retired.
Hey brother. Just wanted to say that I stumbled on your channel and I love them. I am an avid outdoorsman as well. Hiking camping kayaking. Love doing overnighters too. I am from Canada. I was born and raised in Newfoundland (which is on the east coast north east of Maine) and now I live in British Columbia, Canada (which is on the opposite end of the country). The reason for the huge move was due to military. I have been in the service for 16 years. 14 years as a medic and happy to say I worked side by side with your military members in Afghanistan. I am now a firefighter in the airforce (saw the light lol). As for smoking I did the same as you brother. Started when I was 18. Quit cold turkey after joining the military at 28. I hated the fact it controlled me too man. It is stupid. Agreed. Keep up the amazing work bro. There are many times when I can’t get outside for whatever reason and watching videos like yours and others help tide me over if you know what I mean. I heard you talking about Facebook a while back in a vid. What’s your Facebook page man. I would add you to my follows in a heartbeat. And if you ever want to come explore western Canada you have a spot to stay and hang your hat and a buddy who would gladly take you out on some adventures.
Yo I want the 4 hour long video! Camping, cooking, hiking, shelter building, spear making, wood working, flint napping, gear reviews, bush crafting. All that good stuff. Your videos are my get aways. I am slowly building up my gear to go camping someday for the first time. I am 35 and never been 😞. And I am an outdoorsmen at heart.
Great video, Luke! More of these, they're by far the best videos on this channel. They also help build credibility, because people can see you actually use the gear before you review it. I get the impressions some channels just get sent free stuff, review these items (that still look brand new) after a couple of days and then move on to the next item.
Great adventure Luke, thanks for sharing! I too smoked for about 10 years, but quit back in 2001 on the way home from work one day. Best thing I ever did.
literally my whole attitude changed when I heard u say "time for a good old smoke" lol I was astonished I said no way he smokes I couldn't believe it BUT you don't and I since December 5th 2016 HAVE BEEN SMOKE FREE and im soooooo happy I did it now I have alot more money for gear great vid!!!!
Great video Luke. I am going through my 3rd time quiting with Chantix right now. Turned 30 in September and finally feel like I can beat smoking for good. It is a positive reinforcement to see you hiking and enjoying the outdoors knowing that you were also a smoker before. Some future goals to look forward to after I quit for good!
Wished I had quit when I was 28, I smoked for nearly 50 years finally quit this summer. I truly enjoy your videos and often follow your advise when purchasing gear.
Hey Luke, thanks for answering my question in this video. it was a surprise when I noticed I was the Nick you quoted. I have grown up in there outdoors and love the chance to get my hands on new gear. I also don't think people realize how much effort it takes to produce every a short video.
Love your channel! I also started smoking at 18.... smoked for 10yrs as well. I quit cold turkey on a family vacation. everyone hated me for that week. haven't picked them up since. that was around the year 2000. I sometimes smoke yarrow or mullein in a bush pipe but I cannot touch tobacco ever again, for fear of stating back.
Thanks for another great video Luke! If you havn't already, you really need to come to Sweden and try out our "allemansratten"-rule. Watching your video it dawns on me jus how fundamental the differences are for hikers in America vs. Sweden. Here, a hiker has the right to hike and stay overnight on anyones property, as long as you do it with respect to people and nature. The rule can be summed up in one centence: "Not disturb, not destroy". Respect that and you´re welcome pretty much anywhere. Keep up your awesome videos!

I could stare at that mountain view forever. Thanks for showing it! For the smoking part, I started way too young, at around 12 yrs old and quit 15 years later. Been smoke-free since 2005. I´m so glad to be rid of that useless and harmful habit.
I smoked for 18 years and I've quit now for 22 years best thing I've ever done !!! New to your Channel and just subscribed. Develop some asthma as a result as you can see from my sign in name 🦅
First off let me say I enjoy the hell out of your video's. I've missed very few if any. Been a smoker for many years and wish I could quit. I've tried but never successfully. The hikes you take would kill me ( or make me quit ). Keep the reviews coming, there truly helpful....
There are plenty of camping youtube channels but you take it a level above with the hiking adventure. Very entertaining thank you. PS I hate spiders 🕷🕸
I have the teton explorer 4000, great pack. Looking at the 3400 model for my son. Snug pak makes great gear. I want one of there tents, they have some good packs as well
I, too used to smoke, and I quit cold turkey as well, all it takes is determination, and wanting to do it; if you are a heavy smoker, it will be harder, but I did activities that I enjoyed, my will power was greater than my need to smoke. Good luck to everyone out there :)
I applaud you man. I'm catching up on my subscriptions in the last few days, I must say there are a ton of good videos and talented short film makers on UA-cam but I must say in my opinion this is the best video on UA-cam today period. Great job bro! Looking forward to watching you in the future. I love you're content and although I'll watch Dave Canterbury and joe robinet first I enjoy your videos just as much. Keep it up dude nice job.
I smoked for about 35 years I stopped in 07 after a heart attack, now I'm 59 and with other health prob's I can only hike along with people on youtube. Never start, or you'll wish you hadn't...
This past summer was my first year of hiking since I was a kid. I purchased a Teton Scout. It was what I could afford with the features I wanted but I love it!!! Like you said, Teton products are amazingly durable! I'm probably going to be upgrading to a new pack for next summer and passing my Scout down to one of my kids. Pretty sure I will be purchasing another Teton.
Congrats on being a non-smoker Luke. I started when I was 12, and quit a year and half ago at 39. Quit cold turkey also by totally cheating and going out to camp in the middle of no where. Best idea ever. Keep up the good work.
Hey Luke, going back and re-watching your older videos, I was wondering what the difficulty level of Pisgah, I have some health issues but I still try to get out the trail.
Luke I smoked for 29 years, cold turkey quit once like you but had too many stressors in my life at the time and went back to the butts. I tried several times after that and couldn't do it same reason as before. Finally I started vaping and found that with good quality juices and equipment I could successfully quit. I haven't had a cigarette in 2 years now. I sing better, actually in a higher range, I breathe better. have better stamina.
Hi Luke: I smoked until age 37 but not for the last 40 years, still all that smokey air at that height would make my asthma a concern .Hope you get lots of rain for Xmas. Brian 76
I smoked for about 12 years but I quit 7 years ago. I will also be 36 in January, same as you. I am so glad there are no more cigarets in my life. Great video again!!
Luke, I'm about three months older than you, and I smoked from age 14 until I was 29. I enjoyed it more when I was younger. By the time I got into my late 20's, I hated the way it made me feel. Made me feel so sick all the time. I "tried" to quit many times. Cutting back, medicine, etc. Like you, I finally quit cold turkey one day before my 30th birthday. It was the hardest thing I ever did, but the best thing I ever did for myself. Cutting back, and feeding the body nicotine while trying to quit is a fallacy. The only way to break a nicotine addiction is to quit feeding the body nicotine. For all those who want to quit, cold turkey is so so hard at first. For a month, you will feel like you lost your best friend and life will never be the same. It passes, trust me. It gets so much easier. You will have some terrifying cravings that come out of the blue. Deal with them. The next one won't be so bad. Eventually, you will get to the point where I'm at. You won't want to be around it any longer.
The craziest thing about quitting are the random urges and cravings. Even to this day, something will happen or I will do something and the thought comes to mind. haha Have a good one Preston. - Luke
Nice Teton, love their products, and like you had said - for the price they are well worth it. I've owned the scout 3400 (which I gifted to my sister), and now the explorer 4000. I'm all about the budget/high quality gear at an affordable price. So, thank you for reviewing and helping people in the search for those products. As for smoking, I've never had an addictive personality. I buy a pack and it lasts me 2-3 months if I'm not aided. I'll smoke one every 1-2 weeks, if the hankering arises or I'm having some adult beverages and join someone else while partaking.
Moved from the DMV area east coast to whidbey island wa last year right on time to enjoy the area for a bit before fires lit their way all the way up to Washington. Couldn't see your hand in front of your face on the trails for a while. And then deployed to the desert so I'm glad I got the little time I did.
Very nice video. You have a great on-screen personality, including your laugh. Lots of helpful information too. Thank you for counselling young people not to smoke; I hope they take your advice. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your next adventure.
I smoked for 16 years. I quit when I got married. Just stopped cold turkey. Anyone can do the same, you just decide to do it and then follow through with it. ^^ Splendid video as always, Luke.
Great video Luke. We also have lots of those holes in the rocks. They are formed by ice and rocks twirling in them for thousands of years making them very deep in some cases. We call them devil's pots. I believe your holes are of same origin.
Ticks are a very real health problem and can effect your life in a negative way if the right kind gets ahold of you. I use Sawyer insect repellent directly on my body and their clothes spray on everything I take into the woods with me. It's available on Amazon and is very reasonable. I liked the pack you had on but it will have to go some to replace my Osprey Atmos AG. The Osprey, when adjusted correctly, feels like you are carrying a bag of air, very impressive and thanks for turning me on to it. To bad you couldn't have a fire. I always look forward to your campfire talks and questions and answers. The moon photos were excellent as was the sunset. Keep up the great work my friend. S&H
Thanks for the nice video. I quit smoking after 18 years, the way you did "cold", the only way it works! My bad luck advantage I was in the hospital that time. Again thanks for the video best wishes from Germany
great video, plan to get out this weekend myself. I have never smoked, BUT I do like to have chewing tobacco with me when I'm hiking or playing outdoor sports.
Its been a while I haven't watch your videos, you're looking good now and looking tougher hahaha. Your videos never fail inspiring me to go out for adventure! Can't wait for my next expedition. Goodluck to you sir! take care.
THe key thing I think is a NC deal I do that as well. The purple paint was established within the NC Wildlife Commission so that people didn't have to purchase and post all the signs up, there are rules to the purple paint and the size and height they should be. But essentially it is no trespassing, hunting, or fishing, I really like the new paint rules much better over buying and keeping those stupid signs up so much easier and cheaper. Taking the scout troop to Pisgah in Jan should be a fun trip one of my favorite areas in the state.
Thanks for great overnight adventure video. These are the best! By the way, all the gear you introduce from Varusteleka are quite descriptive names in finnish. Iike the knife was "sharp jaeger knife" in english.
Hi Luke, Thanks for another awesome vid, loved it, as always. You forgot to talk about the bear-bag. I'm interested in what it is and how it works. I'm a smoker, also started when I was 18. I've tried giving up 3 times and the longest I lasted was 3 months.
Great location there my friend. Nice footage. Your videography/photography has improved greatly since the start of your channel. Keep up the good work Luke.
I'm so glad you did the Teton Mountain Adventure 4000 pack I've been wanting to buy this pack but wasn't sure on the quality. can't wait till you do your pros and cons on this pack
Brother Luke, your bestes video yet, no really all your vids have been great brother. I wanna tell you about my little over night adventure, should have been a two night but got short to one, so ime gonna write you a letter telling you about it ok, well thank so much brother Luke, great job once again.
I had to look on the map to see where Pisgah National Forest was. I live in Ohio and you don't here about it much here. It looks like a very beautiful place to backpack.
Hah!! Nasty! Hate we I missed you up there. I was there with my wife on our honeymoon about 2 weeks before! Would have said hi. Good video! Something unsaid, but you gave me the idea of wrapping up straps with rubber bands. That should suit my ILBE well.
Hey Luke! As usual, a fantastic video! I'm wondering if you just sleep in the clothes you have on? You didn't mention sleepwear in the gear load out. Just curious!
5 minutes into your vid luke. Several of my sons boy scout buddies use teton packs. Ive never seen one fail... i expect it to serve you well. Im a kelty fan myself. My son likes his 75L REI. Great vid luke!!!
I ordered a snug pack under quilt, wait for it for two months, and never got it. Amazon told me it would be another two months so I went with the DD Hammock under quilt. Not sure what happen to snug pack or ever even heard from snug pack.
im a smoker. I like it & I hate it! I've tried to quit many times. problem is im also addicted to opiates that was able to quit so to stop smoking may just drive me over the edge lol great vid luke. looks like an awesome place!! we are getting blasted with snow here in ohio FINALLY so its off to the woods.
You're right about the editing. It's terribly time consuming, and trying to get it to come out to your standards can often add time. Looks like a fun place to hike, may have to look this place up.
I quit smoking 3 years ago but I picked up vaping, but starting in January I have my fire academy starting up so I have been easing up on it to try and ween myself off.
I smoked for 28 years, it will be 3 years in January since I quit, and have no desire to smoke again. I swore I would never put smoke in my lungs again. I do vape, and it has helped, I'm at the lowest nicotine level available. I'll eventually get off that. But I totally agree, don't ever start smoking.
That purple paint law is awesome 💜
Great way to allow people to respect private land!

Thanks for making this video Luke. Its awesome. Really hope those wild fires are getting under control.
Great video, wish we could have seen more of how you setup and slept in the hammock.
Well done, brother. Great trip and nice music.
I have the teton explorer 4000, great pack. Looking at the 3400 model for my son. Snug pak makes great gear. I want one of there tents, they have some good packs as well
How light is this pack, I've been looking at Osprey packs for their weight... I have a bad back and was looking for something really light.
Jim , it's not a light pack I don't know the weight but it's fairly heavy.
Jim I found the info on the pack it about 4.5 pounds empty
Hi Luke, great video again look forward to the next one.

What great words of wisdom. I would really like to stop smoking and your calming profound enduring words helped. Thanks 🙏🏼

Be Careful Luke 🤗🤗🤗 The View Is Amazing 🏕🤗🤗🤗🤗🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for the nice video. I quit smoking after 18 years, the way you did "cold", the only way it works! My bad luck advantage I was in the hospital that time.
Again thanks for the video
best wishes from Germany
Thanks for the video brother I know this is an old one but you’ve inspired me to quit smoking And some other bad habits, so thank you
And yet another incredible hiking and camping klip JUST AWESOME my friend ;)
great video, plan to get out this weekend myself.
Goodluck to you sir! take care.
I've had nights like that and had a great night camping
THe key thing I think is a NC deal I do that as well. The purple paint was established within the NC Wildlife Commission so that people didn't have to purchase and post all the signs up, there are rules to the purple paint and the size and height they should be. But essentially it is no trespassing, hunting, or fishing, I really like the new paint rules much better over buying and keeping those stupid signs up so much easier and cheaper. Taking the scout troop to Pisgah in Jan should be a fun trip one of my favorite areas in the state.
Thank you for your effort. It was very interesting and enjoyable.
Dude, that sunset at 29:00...
I've tried giving up 3 times and the longest I lasted was 3 months.
you're awesome Luke
Missed the hammock!
I really need to get myself a hammock and enjoy some of this experience.
That's cool about the purple paint
Great video as always, really appreciate all your work.
What a view from that cliff Luke! Take care, Joachim
YES, HAMMOCK CAMPING!!! We are getting hit with snow right now .CHEERS
Great location there my friend. Nice footage. Your videography/photography has improved greatly since the start of your channel.
Keep up the good work Luke.
Thank you very much LEX.
- Luke
I'm so glad you did the Teton Mountain Adventure 4000 pack I've been wanting to buy this pack but wasn't sure on the quality. can't wait till you do your pros and cons on this pack

I wanna tell you about my little over night adventure, should have been a two night but got short to one, so ime gonna write you a letter telling you about it ok, well thank so much brother Luke, great job once again.
it's here finally!
I had to look on the map to see where Pisgah National Forest was. I live in Ohio and you don't here about it much here. It looks like a very beautiful place to backpack.
Hi! Did you carry any weapon because of the bears? If so, how do you carry?
Great video! Always love your content. Keep up the awesome work
Hah!! Nasty! Hate we I missed you up there. I was there with my wife on our honeymoon about 2 weeks before! Would have said hi. Good video! Something unsaid, but you gave me the idea of wrapping up straps with rubber bands. That should suit my ILBE well.
Hey Luke! Awesome video! I have to say, in that first picture you showed at the end, you sort of looked like Sony Bono with those shades on! :P
about 860 square miles:) also carry some surveyer tape and you can backtrack from that when off trailing:)
You should buy eno hamock straps. They are very very easy to adjust and keep the tree safe. Only $30 or so on amazon. Highly recommend
I smoked for 30 years. I quit two years three months ago. Way to go Luke.
My feet are trembling looking down the cliff side!
Congrats to you brother. Keep up the good work. - Luke
I just about had a coronary when you busted out those cigarettes.
Please don't ever scare us like that again. Absolutely terrifying!!!
Great video, the view was beautiful. Where did you source your background music. Love it.
Great vid.
